Connor Cook

I wouldn't mind seeing Cook throwing 40 or 50 times today. Even if he doesn't have a high completion rate. If he can throw zero interceptions, keep the turnovers to a minimum, and make some tough first-down passes like he did on the first drive. One of them was on third and long. I'll be impressed.

I'm still leaning towards this guy becoming a solid NFL quarterback especially if he has talent around him. Tom Brady was like that when he played at Michigan. Not to say Connor Cook is the next Tom Brady but you have to try and be honest with your evaluation in games like these. Does the guy show heart? Does the guy show intangibles you need to win from the quarterback position? It's not all about judging a guy on stats because the talent around him plays into that (especially at the collegiate level - more talent maks your team a powerhouse a lot easier), but what his potential is.

Can I envision Connor Cook becoming a successful NFL quarterback?
Right now I'd have to say yes. You can work with what he brings to the table.
 
Awful playcalling on 3rd and 2. Cook was in shotgun formation selling an obvious pass, but it was a delayed halfback toss that they lost yards on. And MSU had to punt.

In that situation, 3rd and 2, I'd just live and die with Cook's arm.
You let him throw a tough touch pass on 4th and 8 but not 3rd and 2?

Coaching plays a big part in Cook's development also.
Tom Brady had great coaching when he arrived in New England.

To be fair, games like these only give you a partial glimpse of what a guy can become. The coaching at the NFL level is going to be more important for Connor Cook.
 
Hopefully Michigan goes up 14-0 with another TD.
And then we can skip all those BS running plays called.
I want to see Connor Cook passing every play in this game.
 
Michigan State's defense has some pride I guess.
They looked a lot better stopping Michigan there.
Still a close game. Running is still a factor for MSU.

I'd like to just see Connor Cook letting it rip down the field.
He has to earn every completion against that amazing secondary.

That's one hell of a play inside the red zone. Not this far out. LOL
I love that though. Nobody open? Tuck it and run. Thinking fast.

In the NFL that's a big no no though. You don't want your franchise QB getting hurt. A guy you will probably invest $60 to $100+ million dollars on.

Sharp and quick, accurate pass. He's got it guys.
If Cook were the Texans QB we'd be in the playoffs. Not 1-4.

All tied up 7-7. Michigan State may go undefeated this year. What a team. They don't even have the best talent around Cook on offense but somehow they find ways to make plays.

Finding ways to make plays. Just like Tom Brady does. No excuses just make it happen. That's what I love to see from a quarterback. Leave the BS excuses for the losers. Losers value stats. Winners just win. I want a quarterback who can win. Not one that has the sexiest stats. Now if you can put the two together that's fine.
 
Michigan State is getting out-played by Michigan. It feels like a 21-0 lead but it's still a 7-7 tied game. I still feel like MSU will find a way to win just because they have Connor Cook at quarterback. When you have a good quarterback you always feel like you're in the game.
 
Cook has made a few bad throws. His completion percentage isn't going to be good. But a lot of that has to do with the talent disparity between Michigan's amazing defense (their secondary is an all-star team) and Michigan State doesn't have the best talent for Cook to work with. Michigan's pass rush looks pretty damn good when they go all-out blitz.

Even more impressive is no turnovers for Cook so far. He just took a sack on a blitz, didn't try to force it and he held the ball well. He won't turn the ball over so in that aspect I understand the game manager comparisons. But he's so much more.

The NFL team that drafts Connor Cook is going to have one tough and talented quarterback. Put some talent around him and give him good coaching and the sky is the limit for this kid. I've seen enough of him to know he's got something special about him. His stats today may say otherwise but just watching him I see a franchise NFL quarterback.

This is why I hate analytics. They don't always match up to the eye test.

And somehow and someway, with as badly as Michigan seems to be dominating Michigan State on both sides of the ball, it's a 10-7 score. I still feel like Michigan State is going to win with a Connor Cook game-winning drive later in the game. It seems like Michigan is ahead 28-7 right now but they're not. LOL
 
Another amazing first-down pass for Cook right over the middle of the field. It was wiped out for an offensive penalty though.. Only 41 seconds until halftime. I think Michigan State will probably be content going to halftime only down 10-7 now.

But I'm highly impressed with Cook in that first half. If somebody just looks at the box score they would think he's having a shitty game. I'll be more impressed if Michigan State wins this game and Connor Cook wins the game with his arm. Perhaps a game-winning drive is looming.

10-7 game at halftime. It feels like 28-7. Amazing.

You just have that feeling Connor Cook and MSU will find a way to win.
 
Michigan St has some talent on offense. You're underselling them to build Cook up. They have at least two OL who will get drafted (one in the 1st round). They have a talented RB (albeit only a freshman), a decent TE, and two WRs who are going to get drafted (Burbridge is a really good player).

I don't hate what Cook has done so far today. He's played safe and hasn't made any mistakes but he has left yards on the field by missing some throws. He's been average at best outside of two really good throws.

All that said, they are only down three at the half and I trust Cook a lot more than I trust Rudock. He's got the skills to get it done down the stretch. Should be a good finish.
 
I watched Jared Goff throw five interceptions in a similar game last week. In terms of playing a great defense on the road. I'd rather have the guy who's team may struggle in that type of environment, but it's still a winnable game because he isn't making dumb mistakes. Much less too many turnovers to count. Do that and you have no chance to win.

Can your quarterback win a game in which his team struggled in? A win is all that matters to me. Did you win or lose the game? Right now, Connor Cook is in position to give Michigan State the lead with one good drive. All because he's made no turnovers.

Cook just threw a perfect strike to that Burbridge guy over the middle of the field. Off his finger tips. Looked like the defender tipped it. It's that type of pass which excites me. Sure, Burbridge can't burn his guy for an easy six but in the NFL most wideouts make that play. The pass couldn't be intercepted. It was put in a perfect tight window where only the receiver could catch it.

A quarterback who can literally eliminate turnovers. I like it regardless. I'm not saying to judge Connor Cook based on today or any other game. But what can this kid do at the NFL level with good coaching? That is what excites me because the skill set is there to be really good.

Another play he tucked it and ran for six yards because nobody was open.

I understand your a Cook fan, but don't undersell Goffs performance vs Utah. He threw 5 picks yes, but Cal was in it till the very last drive. Lost by 6
 
My point being is it's hard to win making that many turnovers. It's happened before. Some NFL teams, much less college teams, have won committing 5, 6 or 7 turnovers but the percentage isn't in your favor.

By the way, I was doing some work in the garage and missed that beautiful touch pass for a TD by Connor Cook. That was the one area I had him ranked negatively. If that's his biggest weakest then I'm okay with it. Very correctable and he just proved he could do it quite flawlessly. That one had perfect accuracy unlike his 4th and 8th pass in the first quarter.
 
I'm okay if the Texans end up drafting Goff or Cook.
Or even that other guy you say is rated as a first-round pick.

I'll cheer for whoever we draft but my preference is Cook.
But I'm not the general manager of the Texans. It's not my decision.

All I know is we have to do something to take our minds off a long 1-15 Texans season. Maybe 2-14, 3-13. I don't see us doing any better than 4-12. We'll be 1-5 after the Jaguars beat us tomorrow.

All I know is we need a better quarterback!!!!! I will not tolerate us not drafting one in the first round of the 2016 NFL Draft. If we don't I may have to become a Dallas Cowboys fan again. Which I was in 1997, 1998, 1999, 2000 and 2001 when the Oilers left this city.

I think it's a good thing that there are more than one quarterback we can be excited about with our potential top five pick in the 2016 NFL Draft. There will be one on the board to select. Even if we drop to the 8th-12th pick range I think Cook may still be there for us. Cook is an option for sure. If we pick #1 overall maybe we'll take Goff.

I'm not against anybody. As long as we draft what we feel is a franchise quarterback and roll with it. At least then we'll have some hope toward building a consistent winning team.

Cook is a good example of why Goff should go back to school. Cook is a much better QB this year. Also bigger and stronger. So far he is holding his own, not making mistakes and has his team in the game against a very good opponent in a very hostile environment. You can't ask for much more than that.
 
Man, Burbidge may be decent but he's being covered by an all-world talent at cornerback. Cook put the pass where only Burbidge could catch it though. Another incomplete. No interception. Looking at the replay it was an amazing pass. Burbidge has to catch it but it's hard to deny he's being covered like a blanket in this game.

****. And then Burbidge finally was wide open. Mis communication between Burbidge and Cook. That could have given MSU the lead!

And then #85 for MSU dropped a first-down pass by Cook.
Right on the money. Cook with another beautiful pass but it goes down as incomplete.

Three straight passes that Connor Cook could have given MSU the lead or first down. Two were just dropped. The other was a mis-communication. Unbelievable bad luck there.

Early in the fourth quarter too. Cook and MSU still have a chance. But man, they could have just taken the lead. Not sure what more they could have done other than catching those passes.

I'm convinced though, swap Burbidge for DeAndre Hopkins, Cook's passing percentage goes way up. And that #85 for Michigan State couldn't catch a cold. My goodness gracious. I keep forgetting his name. :texflag:

Macgarrett Kings Jr. He's a 5'10, small senior wide receiver. Balls right in his hands and he can't catch them. That last first-down catch he dropped changed the momentum. If he makes that catch, that I'd argue even I could make, Michigan State may have taken the lead.

3rd and 3. MSU's makeshift O-Line did a hell of a job giving Cook time to pass. He throws it to #85 on a quick slant (not again) who was held and stumbled trying to draw a flag. Man. No call. MSU had to punt. Don't try to sell a penalty. Go catch the damn ball! Macgarrett Kings Jr. LOL. This guy is hurting MSU's chances. He's hurt Michigan State on the last two drives.

I'd be happy with either. Even Wentz. As long as we identify that we need a franchise quarterback and gamble on one in the first round. I think Connor Cook is probably more pro ready and can become a day one starter on a bad team. Which I would classify the Houston Texans as a bad team. Given the type of team the Houston Texans have it seems like Connor Cook would be ideal for us. But if we take Goff I'm not going to complain.

I've had more fun watching Connor Cook play today, even if they lose, than I have any Houston Texans game in the past three years. It's been a pleasure. If Connor Cook can lead a last-minute drive for the win at Michigan today. That would be icing on the cake. It would reward him for all of those dropped passes.
 
Ugh. MSU's O-Line played pretty good today. Not the time to allow the defensive tackle to abuse the right tackle like that. Connor Cook hits a guy for a big first down. Burbidge baby!

He has guts. He reminds me of Brett Favre but two inches taller and without all the dumb interceptions. Tough as freakin' hell too.

He's playing in an impossible environment. So many bad breaks today.

And yet here he is, with a chance to win the game late.

Another tough sack. Damn. And he held on to the ball!!!! Most QB's fumble that. This dude is tough as ****. He can play for the Houston Texans. Especially with a **** O-Line.

Connor Cook got away from another sack and had to just throw it up on fourth and long. The ball was tipped. Damn. Michigan is going to win 23-21. And the intended target was Kings Jr. #85 who made some costly drops in the fourth quarter.

I came away from this game very impressed with Connor Cook.
Unbelievable circumstances and he was one big play away from a win.

The stats will show that he had a bad game of course. Which is why every play has to be watched to understand what happened. Man, gutsy showing. I haven't seen a quarterback with this much toughness and swagger in a long time.

He took some big ass hits in the fourth quarter and got up pissed off he didn't make the completion. I may become a fan of the NFL team that drafts Connor Cook even if it's not the Houston Texans. LOL

He's a taller, stronger and smarter version of Brett Favre.
And Brett Favre was the toughest quarterback in NFL History.
A guy that you can count on to play every week. Can absorb the hits.

That one lazer pass, hard like a rocket, to Burbidge. Damn!!!!!

Bad punt snap for Michigan with no time left! Michigan State scoops it up and returns it for a Touchdown. They tried to punt it off with 9 seconds left and time ran out on the return back.

Connor Cook. Hell of an effort in the win. So many tough breaks. The dude is tough as nails. Didn't make excuses. Came back every time firing rockets. Unbelievable game. Best game I've seen in YEARS!!!!!!! NFL or NCAA.

I feel bad for the people who will only look at the box score.
It's going to over-shadow just how tough and fun it was to watch.

Now back to reality as our Houston Texans drop to 1-5 tomorrow.
We can't draft one of these quarterbacks fast enough.

Goff had his team in the game as well. Also Cook did not complete at least 50% of his passes either today. I think this week for the both of them is a wash. Let's be honest neither one really wowed anyone

I disagree with not being wowed. I came away today very impressed and wowed with Cook's performance. Even if they had lost. Winning just made it feel even more sweeter for that gutsy effort he showed today in a hostile environment on the road.

He made all the big-time passes he needed to make, most notably in that fourth quarter, and several of his potential first-down passes were dropped. But he threw some flat out beauties that were only catchable by his receiver. They weren't balls you could intercept even by Michigan's stud cornerbacks.

And the toughness is unreal. He also took several big hits. Especially late in the game. He popped back up like a warrior pissed off and ready to throw another dart on the next play. The young man is exactly what I want as my quarterback if I were an NFL GM.

Connor Cook showed me a lot today. Yeah, follow the stats if you want, but that wasn't what I was seeing. I looked at the intanglbles and everything else that matters.
 
I thought Cook played very well against a tough defense. He made some great, clutch throws that were dropped. Also important to note, Mich was getting good pressure rushing just 3 which means Cook was trying to complete throws against 8 in coverage.
 
He was 18 of 39 had 328 yds and only 1 TD and no INT he had a pretty good game who else feels that Connor Cook shouldn't be the QB for The Texans

Probably could have been a lot better, I'm guessing closer to 430 passing yards and 10 more completions (28-39) if those dropped balls that were catchable weren't dropped. There had to be at least ten of them that made me scratch my head in disbelief that they weren't caught throughout the game. Quite a few in the fourth quarter alone

Some big gains, several first-down passes if caught, were lost on beautifully thrown balls that weren't caught. The ESPN announcers were even praising Connor Cook late in the game, praising those incomplete passes as NFL caliber. The type that you have to throw in tight windows in the NFL. He can make all the throws you need.

I came away from today's game even more impressed with Connor Cook. The NFL team that drafts him is going to be getting a good one. Just a fiery competitor that wants to win and doesn't turn the ball over, and can throw the ball in tight windows.

And oh yeah, he was doing it against a dominating defense on the road!!!

He's exactly what the Houston Texans desperately need as a quarterback.

Agreed. He was facing a nearly impossible challenge and rose to the occasion. But not turning the ball over put them in position to win. How many times do we hear Bill O'Brien screaming not to turn the ball over? Punt if you have to.

Most quarterbacks in the country, had they been quarterbacking Michigan State today at Michigan, probably would have thrown 4 or 5 interceptions, fumbled once or twice, and had quit (mentally checked out) before the game ended if they hadn't left because of a physical injury. There was one point in the first half that I had been amazed by how dominating the Michigan defense was. Their secondary, in particular, was covering everybody and not giving up any separation. A foot (as in one step) at best they gave up.

In this tough situation, Connor Cook committed 0 turnovers. A lot of his incompletions were thrown where only the receiver had a chance to catch them. They weren't in danger of being intercepted except for the last one he threw on 4th and 19. Another near sack play that he just had to lob up. The only time he turned the ball over was a called-back interception because of defensive holding in the first quarter. So it didn't count.

It was such a tough environment against a defense that had an excellent pass rush and shutdown cornerbacks. Michigan State's offensive line played their best game of the season today, and still they had no answer on those final few drives. Michigan had defenders, with a three-man front, nearly untouched applying the sack or big hit on Cook.

He still came back on the next play and made a beautiful pass that gave them a chance to win. It was unfortunate that his 3rd and 19 rocket pass on the final drive wasn't caught. That one would have made me scream in excitement.

And still I felt he was rewarded with the win for his gutsy, tough play today. Good karma I felt on that blocked punt return for a Touchdown with no time left.
 
Chris - I would not be disappointed if the Texans drafted Cook.

From what I saw today, Cook is now my #1 and Wentz my #2 and at this stage IMHO those will be the only 2 QBs drafted in the first RD.

PhillyTexansFan - Goff looks a little like Cook of last year. When I compare Goff to Cook of this year, Goff's play is a little sloppy.

Here was his 30-yard Touchdown pass in the third quarter. The guy that caught it was the one that dropped two key passes in the fourth quarter that would have extended drives.


It was one of the rare times that the Michigan secondary looked out of place. Good quarterbacks make you pay when you have a defensive miscue. Shotgun formation and a nice pump fake prior to the throw.

That's about what I'm seeing. I do give him high marks for keeping his team in the game against a very good opponent in a hostile environment. Iwasn't expecting him to compete 60%-70% of his passes and Michigan secondary may be the best that I have seen this year. But yeah I too was disappointed to see him not deliver in the 4th Quarter.
 
He looked solid but was disappointing not seeing him deliver at the end with multiple chances to win the game. Once Michigan finally started getting some blitzes home he couldn't do anything.

I'm on the Cook train. Connor could have delivered in the 4th if Kings could catch the ball. At the end after the miracle, you could see how down Kings looked that he basically let his tram down with 2 critical drops that would have both been 1st downs (and 1 of them possibly a TD)

Michigan was out gained 380+ to 230 yards of offense, and 20+ first downs to 10+

If Jourdan Lewis is an all-round CB than Aaron Burbridge must be an all-time, also. (9 catches for 132 yards, all vs. Lewis)

Michigan State's ST's are so bad that we couldn't punt (our punter was hurt and we were using our back up QB) or kick FG's. (As a freshman our kicker was on point and now he can't make chip shots to save his life. He's broken. ) Magically, though, ST's ends up winning us the game.

I'm hoping we find a way to get him in the draft this year.

Small correction but 8 for 120 was against Lewis. He had one reception in the 1st quarter against a Safety. Both guys acquitted themselves quite well. Burbridge came down with 100+ yards against a very good CB while Lewis gave up 100 yards but had 6 pass breakups.

What was crazy was that, despite Burbridge's production, Cook had just a 100 QB Rating when throwing to him when covered by Lewis. He had a 154 QB Rating when throwing against anyone else in the UM secondary.

Lewis is too small to garner big NFL attention, but he's PFF's #1 rated college CB this year and leads the nation in passes defensed. Burbridge was blanketed all day and still came down with some great grabs. He was very impressive.
 
I agree with most everything you said. My phone corrected me when I said all-round or whatever. I just meant that both played and I think both made plays. Burbridge with the receptions and Lewis with the passes defensed. (6, I think?)

Anyways, I will agree that he looks to be the playmaker on that defense with Henry and Wormley? (Spelling) looking good up front.
