The league still will ask for volunteers. If one is not forthcoming, a team will be appointed.
And this tells you the Texans haven't volunteered so far or there wouldn't be an issue.

The NFL is really screwy sometimes. That's got to be the stupidest rule ever.![]()
Yeah, tell me about it.
But, fact is, sooner or later it'll be our turn.
Perhaps McNair is "considering" that it would be best to get this B/S out of the way now so we don't have to sweat it for the next ten years.
All eligible owners would have to refuse then Goodell would have to pick some poor bastard...I wonder what would happen in a owner just refused?

If he were smart, he'd offer up a free draft pick - say 4th round, you know, the first compensatory pick - for volunteers who had not yet participated... Maybe offer an extra 5-10 mil of salary cap relief. Now that would garner up some volunteering! As it stands the team gets nothing for the intrusion/inconvenience.
What I meant was, when all else failed, and asshole Goodell then picked someone, that someone refused to take part in Hard Knocks. What would be the consequences of that is what I was wondering about. It sure sounds like something I'd do if I was a football owner.
But then, I'm a complete asshole and not sure they'd let me in their stupid little club.![]()

Trust me, I like that auto-exemption a whole lot better. It would be much later if we could regularly find our way into the playoffs............at least, at that time we would have proved a semblance of maturity and stability with less chance of team distraction while they prepare themselves for the next season. JMHO

Then they would work a deal out with another owner to "volunteer", whether it be financial or otherwise.
Anyone who thinks the NFL will force a team to be on Hardknocks is a fool.
when you point a finger, you have 3 pointing back at you... j/s
No finger pointing here, just an all inclusive comment that didn't involve third grade rhetoric ...

a number of us have said that yes, a team could be forced into it. You called us fools but don't think that's 3rd grade rhetoric?
Just matching wit for wit
A number of you?
As opposed to my 6 year olds opinion?
Is growing up allowed?
If by "deal" you mean Goodell would threaten to take away draft picks from all who refused then maybe you're right.
That's not what I call a deal if I'm the one being threatened. The NFL has a contract with HBO, so Goodell will do what's necessary to provide HBO with a subject team.
Think of it this way, after the NFL signed up with Nike did you see any Reebok apparel on the sidelines?
Are we suppose to know who these little girls are?

The rule to require participation for those teams fitting the criteria was voted in unanimously by the ownership, so I'm thinking it's pretty unlikely it ever comes to pass.
But if a team did refuse to participate, and somehow managed to actually find a way not to, I'm guessing they would be both fined and forced to forfeit draft picks. In both cases, out the proverbial Wazool
That's true. The NFL prefers Vinegar to honey...unless it involves moving a team to LA LA LAnd.
Apparently honey doesn't work that well then since the NFL hasn't been in LA since 1994.
Just saying, everyone acts like the NFL is desperate to have a team in LA. It's been 20 years and 4 expansion teams. They could have made it happen if they really cared all that much.
And everyone else pays dearly for a franchise and the NFL keeps upping the LA Pot.
Like what?
Promises of an NFL financed stadium because LA won't use their taxpayers for football. They want that all for themselves.
Are we suppose to know who these little girls are?
When you find a shred of support for that get back to us. There are two private finance proposals going on now.
No. It's called humor.
I recall it was discussed once upon a time maybe. As a possibility IF public funding didn't go thru AND if private means didn't step up
yep. I think the NFL wants the LA market, but also wants someone else to pay for it. That has been their M.O. for decades, so why change now? Especially when it could set a precedent where citizens might start expecting these billionaire owners to pay for their own playpens.
Violence is rarely humorous to me. But slap stick artists like the three stooges where the violence is obviously staged is an exception. But there is nothing humorous in real fighting.
But thanks to all for the answer to my question.
You find no humor watching Watt pick up Luck and slam him to the turf? I find that highly humorous. I look forward to the next time he does it.
No.
Because the way they call the games today, Watt would get penalized for unnecessary roughness and might even get ejected.
:mariopalm:
Watt (this is not a knock, I like that he is thoughtfully doin it) very consciously gets every hit in he thinks he can get away with. You can see the little gears start spinning in his head when the balls leaves on whether he should go ahead and hit. He's playing the line hard.
It's not that hard. Play hard to the whistle.
I've never seen him intentionally injure any player, even when he fouls are called. They are just the results of good hits gone bad under today's touch rules.
He seems to get a kick from helping the player up and doing it again.
I'm not going to lie, this season of hard knocks has seemed a little more boring than most. I'm just hoping the Texans don't make it even more boring. Anybody going to TC those two days?

Yeah, 5 of his 8 team-leading penalties were either roughing the passer or roughing the kicker.
Step back from that line J.J.... just a toe. I don't want to lose you to a flag-happy ref.
I never understand why when we play the Colts, especially at Indianapolis. the referees will call a ticky tack personal foul on J.J. Watt for a helmet-to-helmet hit on the quarterback (replays show it wasn't even high enough) when we're in position to beat them which changes the momentum.I think he got away with way more borderline late hits than he got penalized for. I'm fine with what he's doing. Maybe get 15 yds once every other game, but get 3-4 hits in each game that make the QB think twice and spend that extra fraction of a second wondering where JJ is.
Not to add to the conspiracy theory, but this reminds me of the leg whip Fitz received in the last Colts game. Where in the photo you could see a ref looking at the play in clear sight. No whistle. No fine on the guy who did the tripping (Newsome?). Nothing. Did O'Brien ever address this? It's stuff like this that feeds this kind of conspiracy ideas. But flip the script when the Colts defensive player gets a low hit or a cheap shot and late hit (way later and dirtier than Watt's) on our quarterback nothing is called...

It's like the zebras are helping the Colts remain undefeated against us at Indy. 0-13 all-time going into 2015 but we had them on the ropes at least twice there. Actually three times in fact.
Don't officiate any differently toward J.J. Watt, arguably the greatest defensive player in NFL history at the pace he's playing at, compared to any random scrub defensive player on the Colts. If anything Watt should get the benefit of the doubt and not the other way around.
I bet if somebody had the time and went back to gather game footage of the last handful of games the Texans played at Indianapolis, especially in Watt's career as a Texan, they can find some legitimate evidence to send the league to see some one-sided and unfair officiating.
This story names the #Texans, #Redskins, and #Bills as "potential participants" on this year's Hard Knocks: http://t.co/TwpcbDixA9
Texans, Bills, and the Redskins are the 3 teams.
Who wants to watch the Redskins?
Narrows it down to 2.
Bills have Rex Ryan and we have JJ Watt who the NFL loves to mic up.
