Texans 2015 Free Agency

Vince Wilfork...

Ryan Mallett and Brian Hoyer will both be toughened up facing Wilfork and Watt in practice. I'm sure O'Brien will make sure they have a red jersey on though otherwise we'll be down to Tom Savage starting games. :kingkong:

And if Clowney and Cushing can stay healthy, I wouldn't even show up for full pad practices if I were Mallett or Hoyer. That isn't going to be much fun. LOL. On the plus side they wouldn't see many, if any, defenses that are better around the league.

I saw it mentioned somewhere when free agency started that Wilfork and Mallet were actually really god friends and stayed in contact after he left. Wonder if that played into it at all?

Well, when you are god friends that is just on a whole 'nuther level...

j/k :P

Despite what Longhorns say, I don't think God gets too involved with football. He is too busy listening to my problems. For relaxation and exercise He does take walks in the garden.

If god needs to be occupied, he could listen to my **** for hours. However, I think he'd get bored and get rid of me real quick.

The cap is $145M. Right now, all players under contract (without Shorts calculated in) comes to $146M. And in two month, give or take, we need to come up with money for the draft picks.

How does the cap work so far as signing players between now and the final cut to 53 players? Can we sign as many players as we want, just as long as we are below the cap at the start of the season?

Where are you getting your numbers? Is it top 51? Both Overthecap and spotrac have us at $140M for top 51 right now

Here is a link that might help.
http://www.spotrac.com/nfl/houston-texans/cap/

Total (w/All Active) $81,832,085 $29,294,884 $26,223,659 $2,850,000 - $6,450,000 - $146,490,628
Total (w/Top 51) $75,517,085 $29,280,744 $26,223,659 $2,850,000 - $6,450,000 - $140,175,628
Cap Space (w/Top 51 & Projected Draft Pool) $470,742
Cap Space (w/Top 51) $5,850,118
basically before draft we have 5.850 and after $450,000.

This includes players that we could cut and replace with a UDFA rookie for $435,000. * Note the 435k has not been subtracted and I am not recommending any be cut:

Clabo saving $1.2 million
Yeatman saving $1.045 million
Damaris Johnson saving $ .9 million
Posey saving about $.7 million
Martin saving about $.6 million

a savings after the .435 x 5 costs of apprx $2.27 million. So after draft we could go after a FA offering that amount for '15 with a bump 2016; one more significant player without renegotiating someone contract which could open up many more millions. We are not out of market yet unless we choose to be.

I'm using Spotrac. Scrollong down to the bottom that have "adjusted salary cap" at $146,025,746. Just below that in the gray box they have Total(with/All Active) @ $146,490,628.

So we have additional players under contract beyond the 51 and their salaries cost us currently an additional $6M. We are slightly, by approx $465,000 over the cap at this time, by my reckoning.

So my question is, right now, can we just keep signing players, and continuing to keep getting higher and higher over the cap number, until we hit the cut down dates as we approach the start of the season? After the final cut, just before the start of the season, is that when we have to be under the cap?

I think in the offseason, your top 51 salaries have to stay under the cap. So, to answer your question it then depends on who they sign (do they figure to add to the top 51 or not).

Until the 1st regular season game only the top 51 count. Here is an article with FAQ - Link

19, the bold $146,490,628 includes all active contracts not just top 51 + the money allotted for the draft. You can read that just above what you looked at. Hope this helps?

Your $465,000 is correct after the drafted players are signed. That amount can be adjusted if rounds are traded away BUT we do count what we get back for a traded pick. Theoretically, we could trade #16 ($1 m for several much lower picks that do not total as much).

I haven't been speculating on cap space required for draft picks since things change so much during the draft.

Looks like Cecil Shorts contract went through for the NFLPA report, so time to start calculating that.

I had the team at $5.08m prior to the Shorts contract. But I also include $561,600k work out debt (which Spotrac does not; OTC does include that).

Edit: I already have the base salaries for Shorts, working on the remainder of the deal info.

HOUSTON TEXANS MID-FREE AGENCY TEAM NEEDS
After the initial waves of big signings in free agency hit the NFL, and then teams sought value signings during the second wave, the Houston Texans needs have changed coming into the final month before the NFL Draft.

There could be some initial looks at free agents still on the open market, but with around $3 million left in cap space at the current moment, the Texans would have to shuffle their roster (like cutting a veteran to open cap space,) or move money around, (as in extending players or converting base salaries into bonus money) to make any meaningful moves.

It still leaves the reality of what is ahead for the Texans: that the team's needs for the roster are more in focus after the signings of Kareem Jackson, Derek Newton, Ryan Mallett, Brian Hoyer, Cecil Shorts III, Vince Wilfork, and Rahim Moore.

Something else coming down the Free Agency pipeline?

Yea I saw that too, but who the hell is Field Yates, and who is his supposed source? Seems odd he is scooping the normal guys.

If true, they have to be freeing up that space for some reason.

Trying to figure out how this makes sense. We just signed brand new contracts with $11.65 mil in roster bonuses which could have been signing bonuses and now we're redoing a one year old roster bonus into a signing bonus.

Roster bonus -> savings this year is done as signing bonus

KJ $4.2 mil -> $3.15
Newton $2.25 mil -> $1.8
Hoyer $4.2 mil -> $2.1
Moore $1 mil -> 667k

Prorated those roster bonuses would have been $7.72 mil more cap space i.e. almost exactly what is freed up by converting JJ's.

Maybe something changed? A new player became available, or one that was not previously considered a possibility, has become a possibility?
Speculating, of course.

Probably space to sign an impact free agent after the draft depending on what glaring holes remain on the roster.

I don't think the timing makes sense for your scenario. If you don't have a specific player in mind, and you are waiting until after the draft to see what else you need, why make this move now?
I'd think you would hold off on this restructure until you absolutely need to do it.

It must be some unexpected change. Maybe those speculating about targeting an expensive player are correct. The question is, who would be worth it? Rivers/Brees for the short term? I doubt Peterson will command much salary.

Maybe a shot in the dark, but Brandon Brooks contract is up at the end if this season IIRC. Maybe we use part of the money to lock him up long term? Id sure hate for him to test free agency next year.

Perhaps it's as simple as the fact that signing bonuses create potential future dead money, and when they signed the four guys you mentioned, they looked at having that potential future dead money tied to one or more of them, and compared that to the idea of having it tied to JJ (a player very unlikely to be cut prior to the expiration of his contract), and decided to put the potential dead money in the contract that represented the lowest likelihood of ever having to deal with it.

Obviously, JJ's contract would have needed to be negotiated with this possiblility in mind, but you don't have to be psychic to have that kind of foresight. When that contract was negotiated, they didn't know who they would sign/re-sign, nor did they know the cost (although I'm sure they had a budget), so they left themselves some flexibility to deal with both the scenario that unfolded, and a scenario where free agency wouldn't have resulted in many contracts that were much above minimum.

Aah, that's a great take. I would definitely like for the Texans to extend Brooks.

Sounds like they were going to approach Jjo about restructuring or taking a pay cut. They found out that he wasn't interested in a pay cut & they didn't want to extend him.

IMO, this upsets me even more about the Andre thing or even Chris Myers.

$8M is $8M, doesn't really matter where you get it from. Cutting your starting center, releasing your starting WR, restructure your starting CB, restructure your starting DE.

All of them could have got you the same $8M, only difference is we'd have another player on our roster who can play.

If this was AJ's last year under contract, i doubt they cut him either. However, cutting him this year not only saved $8.5 this season, but it wiped out $16 million for 2016... They will be free from JJO's contract next year and will likely receive a decent compensatory pick for him when he signs with someone else.

Not sure where you're seeing this (although it would make sense), but if you've got a source, please share.

Also, I know they didn't approach him about restructuring, as with only one year left on a contract, pay cut and extension are the only options available. Can't restructure a deal in its last year.

Everything that I read said Joseph has not been (and likely won't be) approached for any changes to his current contract.

Honestly, who cares about how much money they save so long as we don't add anyone of value?

I am about to get me some capspace myself. I won't spend another dime on this team until they start winning. I will still watch them, still route for them, but I will not spend another dime on them.
