Vince Wilfork to Houston - **signed**

First time I went to NYC it involved 12 hours of walking every part of the city and I never me an asshole. Was very surprised being from Texas how cool everyone I met was. In subsequent visits I met a couple but that first trip changed the stereotype.

Reminds me of the time I went to New Orleans and met a couple of people who weren't fat. Changed the stereotype.

Until I realized they were all tourists.

It was pretty much exactly my experience on my first visit to NYC. Loved the city, and the people were WAY nicer than I expected.

Also found out that could just live next door to Katz's deli and that would be just fine with me.

MSR. Best thing about this suggestion is that the Texans could schedule it early that morning and sell a limited number of tickets to it. Maybe even televise it.

They would both catch thier feet between the grass pallets and end up missing the game with injuries.:kitten:

Uhm, the "Pitmaster" wouldn't happen to be a U/H grad by any chance - would he?

I doubt the guy has a college degree. he's just an old guy that
knows how to hire latinos that know how to BBQ.

Larry's used to have 3 branches before he consolidated at 290/BW8.

I used to prefer the one on I10 at Barker Cypress, but the folks in
the neighborhood behind him made him close down because of all of the
state flags he had in his parking lot.

People that say Larry's is crap just missed out on the right time to
go. (or they truly know jack-squat about real TX BBQ..)

Killens as a great BBQ joint is laughable.

The reason I say to go at 4:30p on sat/sun is because it is a buffet
place.

Even the best buffet place is going to suck if you go on off hours and
the food isn't fresh (it's true of Dimassi, Thai Spice Buffet, Cuisine of
India, etc.)

If you really want to try Larry's with an open mind, hit it on the weekend
right before the dinner crowd rush.

The stuff will be hot, and fresh, and will be consumed fast enough
that it doesn't sit out and get rank..

Try their chopped beef in a baked potato (all in the buffet line), or
just plow through the beef and pork ribs.

I like their sausage as well.

I think they have a special deal with a local butcher, because during
the summer months they produce the best beef ribs in the entire
state of Texas (sat/sun)

I want to try that place just because of Ted..

I used to visit Drexler's just because of Clyde.

I like Ted Johnson's fathers place in Tomball. Then again, I'm not a BBQ freak, so I may be wrong. But it's called Rib Tickler. For a while Mr. Johnson sold it to some chinese people that had no idea how to cook BBQ but it's back in his hands again. Don't eat a lot of BBQ, but I do like them.

Mueller's is definitely quality.. Like that place though I don't
get there much.

If you google around you can read about it, but there are alternatives to Franklins that I believe are just as good, and have a much shorter line. I generally prefer to go to La BBQ, which if I get there around 11 am, is only a 30 mins wait or so.

You can also go to John Mueller's Meat Co, which was the original owner for Franklin's before it had that name. He has changed his recipe and has a heavier peppered bark on the brisket, but is also really good and worth checking out. That one has by far the shortest line of the 3.

since this has devolved into a bbq thread...

I don't think you'll ever find a consensus #1 bbq place. They are too diverse, people's taste is too diverse. Some people think brisket is bbq and bbq is brisket. Others like chicken or sausage or ribs or turkey or pulled pork...

Some potato salad is a must, and for others it's beans.

I go to different places depending on what I'm in the mood for...

Ribs here, brisket there, smoked turkey at that place, chopped beef sandwich at this.

Trying to argue how something tastes is like trying to argue the color of a dress...

:kitten:

Doziers BBQ out in Fulshear is pretty damn good.

Weimar has the best sausage IMO.

Now I'm hungry.

Doziers is very good.

Weimar has great sausage, don't know about the best. Have you tried Tallents in Riverside or Prasek's in Hillje?

Two more places that folks should try that are "off the beaten path"
(since I've been thinking about this topic today..)

#1 Red, Hot, & Blue in Ft. Worth right near TCU. I normally don't
like chains, but RHB dry rubs are good, and that place in Ft. Worth
has the largest pork ribs I have ever seen. Every time I hit that
place the dry rubs are good.. (RHB in other states, not so much)

#2 "Swinging Door" BBQ, off of FM-359. This place is good if you
go on the weekends around dinner time. It's got kind of a "hill
country" feel to it, even though it is in the Sugar land area. Combo
plates are good but the wait can sometimes be long..

What do you mean devolved? Ending up at BBQ is clear progress.

Red, Hot, & Blue is good if you like Memphis style BBQ. It's not nearly as good as Corky's or Rendezvous (2 places I've been to in Memphis), but still good. They have multiple locations around DFW.

I'm hoping Wilfork (or his wife) reads this..

Clearly if he does, the Texans are a shoe-in for his landing spot.

A biggun like himself couldn't possibly pass up on all of
the suggestions in this thread..

there's something about the RHB next to TCU -- deal with the devil
or something..

They consistently have the biggest, juiciest, pork ribs to work
with. (before the rub and other prep..)

Like they're out back hitting up the hogs with HgH or something.

It's uncanny..

Never eaten BBQ there but Prasek's has fantastic semi-dried jerkies.

Yeah they do. Most of the bbq is ok, but sausage is very good, imho.

But the jerky is outstanding...

I really love the turkey jerky

i say we save money and go with pickett one more year. pickett is 15 pounds heavier according to official weight and he'll be much cheaper.

One little secret that even most Austinites don't know is that some of the best barbecue in the state is sold from a food trailer only a couple of blocks east of Franklin's on 11th called Micklethwait. I haven't had a chance to eat Franklin's due to chronic hangovers, but I don't see how Micklethwait wouldn't be in the same ballpark.

Other Austin places highly rated in reviews and word of mouth are Stiles Switch and Freedman's. Also, Mueller closed but has reopened as La Barbecue on east Cesar Chavez.

Times have changed since the Salt Lick was the only game in town. Austin's gone through a barbecue renaissance in the past five years.

No one has even brought up Mexican food. That sh** will make you fat quicker than BBQ could ever even hope to. Come on Vince, we've got everything you could ever want! (except Tom Brady).

Mueller is still open, in deep east Austin. In fact most of the new bbq establishments fall off the John Mueller tree including Franklins and La Barbecue. Salt Lick is more about the experience than the food in my opinion. However, their peach cobbler reminds me of my great grandmothers, which means it is the best.

I like my local place (Tin Roof), but I'm not going out of my way for BBQ. I haven't had pulled pork or ribs better than I do them myself, so no point to it. I can't do brisket though, my smoker can't handle a full packer. By the way, I can't remember who it is on this forum that owns it, but sweet mom's BBQ rub is awesome.

I really didn't start smoking my own barbeque until moving out of Texas, but honestly when you only cook one brisket or 1-2 pork butts or a couple of rib racks, getting it right is so much easier than when you have to do 80 briskets a day. I will my stuff (on a good day) over any restaurant out there.

I still like Salt Lick for what it is. Don't bother with the one in Round Rock. They just can't get the brisket right.

I hate to go off-topic like this but the more I think about Wilfork and where he is in his career the less I think it's even worth discussing. He's never coming here. I feel pretty strongly that he's got some years left to play but he's been in New England for 11 seasons and this is a man with a family who lives there and he's not going to move to Houston to play for a year or two. He's not going to want to come down here and live in an empty rental seeing his family when he can get back home. He's going to take less money to play for the Patriots because that's where he belongs at this point. If this was 6-7 years ago and they were fighting over money he'd be here already but that's a totally different set of circumstances.

The Texans need to move on whoever else they have in their sights at NT because this is a pipe dream and nothing else.

We need to think outside the box in securing his services - we should feed the Wilfork the loser in next year's QB battle and the Autumn trimmings from Fitzpatrick's beard.

That's not it at all man. I just can't think of a single reason why coming to Houston is a better move for him than taking a little less money and staying where he's happy. I mean, I'm sure he'd like more money. I'm sure he would have liked the Patriots to pick up that option or whatever and pay him his big-bucks but it didn't happen and now does he get all proud and live out of a hotel room next season in some city he doesn't know or does he face facts and end his great career where he should by all rights end it?

Hell, If I knew him I'd call him up and tell him to take what the Patriots are offering and sleep in his own bed, have breakfast with his kids, and don't get greedy and make the end of his career an ordeal.

Google tells me he's from Florida. Where is his wife from, and where does her family live? That might be the only reason why he would not choose to stay in Boston if all your other assertions are correct.

This Autumn or last Autumn, because the Jets own the rights to this August, and if it's last August, you thinking the equipment guys are holding on to them or something?
<blatantly ignores cannabalism reference>

... Salt Lick ...their peach cobbler reminds me of my great grandmothers, which means it is the best.

Soft crust or hard crust?

... I can't do brisket though, my smoker can't handle a full packer. ...

You can get a half brisket at HEB that turns out pretty good.

... the more I think about Wilfork... the less I think it's even worth discussing.

You're right. Do you input on the bbq discussion? :)

I wouldn't mind Wilfork here.

The more I think of it, there's probably no more than one significant signing to come and if that's the case, I prefer Rahim Moore over Wilfork or any other.

Don't get me wrong, I initially love the idea of Wilfork in a Texans uni next to J.J. Watt. It definitely has a lot of appeal.

However, this is the Houston Texans we're talking about. They would probably overpay for a guy that ends up injured in training camp. My gut tells me that the only reason he'd sign with the Texans is financial incentive, which means they most likely have to overpay.

OR, he wants to go somewhere they know the difference between BBQing and Grilling and won't ask silly questions about where the guests are in the middle of BBQing.

You must have been on the only bad day..

If you look under BBQ aficionado in the encyclopedia, you will
see my photo there.

I drive all over Texas and out of state for BBQ. There practically isn't
any place in the Houston area I haven't been to.

5 hour road trips to Salt Lick in Driftwood, and City Market in Luling, etc..

Larry's on sat/sun around 4:30p is definitely Top-25 in the state..
(and one of the best bangs-for-the-buck in H-town)

Their best items:
Chopped beef, Pork ribs, Pork Sausage, Beef ribs, Slaw. They have
other decent sides like fried shrimp, fried fish, etc..

I don't mess with the sides as much, because when I go there it is for
meat.

The most disappointing BBQ place WITH a reputation I've ever had was Arthurs in KC. The meat was average and the sauce could have been river sand (not an exaggeration).

I've been fortunate enough to avoid New Orleans for my entire life except for one business trip where I didn't even stay overnight. It has nothing to offer someone like me. Much like Las Vegas.

Playing next to JJ?
