Texans 2015 Free Agency

Just waiting for Andre to restructure his new deal so the trade with the Patriots can be finalized. In return the Texans get Jimmy Garrapollo. Rumor last draft was BOB wanted him at 3.1 Out there but you never know.
What time of night was this hatched? :kitten:

Harvin's ........PASS at ANY price.
Harvin never makes it past Dallas except on an infrequent Sunday in opponent's colors.
I dunno but the only regular reports I've seen regarding Texans interest in Hoyer has been ESPN. Outside of that has anyone else reported or verified the FO's interest?
Yes, Texans interested in both Hoyer and Mallett if they can swing it.
...Pissant.
No need for that. He's just doing his job.

The message board I have used in the past to keep up with my Irish has changed hands for some reason and we lost our moderator/s.

It is now a cesspool of name calling and rampant bs.

Moderating is a thankless but necessary job.

Agree or not with the Mods or how they manage the Board, but truer words were never spoken.

As their price continues to rise Texans won't be in picture for WRs Jeremy Maclin and Torrey Smith. Won't break bank for one player.

After re-signing Newton and Jackson Texans trying to re-sign Mallett and Reed. Mallett and Hoyer would b top-2 QBs if they can swing it.

I think Harvin is going to find the market very depressed from what he's making, maybe even down to the $3-4 mil range. He wouldn't be coming in as the 1st round pick or 1st & 3rd round trade. That humbling along with OB supposedly having a firm hand makes good timing for a reclamation project. He has the talent to be deadly in the Welker/Edelman role.

Cecil Shorts would be an intriguing potential bargain guy.
I was big fan of Short 3 when he came out of Mount Union where ran pro days of 4.35 and 4.45 after a "slow "4.53 combine. The pro days were in rain and the 40 degrees. It seems Dolphins are interested. He is 6 foot 193

Moderating is also a responsibility should be used like spice, a little goes a long way. It should not become used as a sledge hammer to CONTROL the free exchange of ideas, particularly just because you are opposed to the thought.

Yeah. It happens all the time on every board. there are precious few GOOD moderators much as there are few GOOD public servants.

The advantage to writing contracts heavy on Roster bonuses is that they are easily converted to signing bonuses as needed. What player wouldn't take the up front cash? But it keeps the cap space full so you meet spending minimums without mortgaging the future.

This is why I will continue to say we have a lot more Cap flexibility than what is shown. We could even redo the contracts written this year to free up additional space this season.

I'm impressed with the direction of the FO Cap management.
Now ya cooking! Let's not for get forget the $10 m roster bonus of Watt that can bring some cash..if need be for the right player(s). :kingkong:

Why try to resign Brooks Reed for? He's trash. This is the bs I'm talking about.

He may be trash but he's our trash and we know how to use him.

If we keep him, we can maybe draft another player at that spot and he can become depth.
Yeah, it's too early to trash a deal before it happens and you see it. But, it's good to see some people are prepared if need be.

#Texans have had conversations with Brooks Reed's agent, who said earlier this week he thinks Reed is likely gone. He still feels that way.

"trash," really? I can not fathom being a fan and having an attitude like that about a player like Brooks Reed. I get that he is not a pro-bowler. However, he has been dependable. He plays disciplined, team football and is an asset on the field. Your comment is a perfect example of what is wrong with fandom... Hopefully, you are just having a bad day and this isn't indicative of your attitude in general.

Coming from cstyle (who hasn't been around much lately), this could be a more personal indictment than just the regular fan saying a player is "trash".

Why? They don't need AJ's money to sign Mallett.

Nope. There's plenty of room for more with minimal effort.
I haven't seen this line of thought refuted, but as pointed out by Thunderkyss, About $6M in cap space is required/set aside for signing draft picks, the practice squad and other spending needs:

OvertheCap has removed Chris Myers & they're showing Kareem Jackson with a $7M cap hit, leaving us with $11.4M in cap space

Still need to include Derek Newton which I believe is about $5M, leaving us with $6M to work with, which is generally set aside for rookies & such.
So at some point we're going to need to cut and/or renegotiate contracts to find additional cap space. Simply put, we currently may not have the cap space to sign Mallett and also meet our other spending requirements. That is, if I'm correctly interpreting the data. As also pointed out, finding this additional cap should not be much of a problem. But if the Texans are intent on signing additional FA's, this funding short fall begins to become larger.

What really bothers me is that Mallet must not be that good at all if Hoyer is what stands in the way of us possibly making this deal with Mallet. If Mallet hasn't shown this coaching staff yet that he has a lot more potential than Hoyer, well that is a horrible sign.

No reason to upgrade our receivers if we're going to have such trash at QB. We might as well keep upgrading the defense and the Oline and be a power running team until we have a guy that throw the ball around.

.

I was under the impression that the Texans are waiting on Mallett to accept their offer, but Mallett wants to see what the Jets have to offer. In light of this, the Texans start talks with Hoyer, in case they don't get Mallett.

Now, they are saying we want both Mallett & Hoyer.

I don't see how Hoyer is standing in the way.

One could easily interpret the Hoyer interest is just a "safety" in case they can't hook Mallet (without the intention of actually signing Hoyer before Mallet declares he wants to go elsewhere)..........or they would take both and release Fitz if the contract $ monies allow.

I agree. The Jets are f'ing everything up for us at the QB spot right now. lol

Both Mallett & Hoyer want to be starting. The Texans signing both of them won't happen. One will sign here (hopefully Mallett), and the other probably with NYJ.

This just occurred to me. If the Jets want to move up for Winston or Mariota and need a second First Round pick to do so, what would they have that we would consider valuable enough to Trade out First pick for?

ps It also takes them out of the QB chase.

I don't know why we're bothering with Hoyer if that might stand in the way of getting Mallet. We could end up with neither if we aren't careful. And hell, if Mallet hasn't done much to convince these coaches that he needs serious consideration to be the franchise here, then we've been playing around with him for a while now. Maybe Mallet is a worse for all we know, but I haven't seen it so I'm a lot more inclined to believe he has way more potential. I've seen all I need to see of Hoyer to know that he is nothing but mack up material and has no business starting here. If it comes down to him and Fitzpatrick, man that is gonna suck.

I think ultimately this is my concern as well. Between the two I've seen enough of Hoyer to know its Cassel 2.0. Mallet has a canon for an arm, height to see over the OL, and seems to have it between the ears. If we sign Hoyer at that point were getting the same QB.

The larger concern in that scenario is Hoyer and Fitz are both stop gap starters at best. That leaves Tom Savage as the only one with franchise type potential. The FO at that point has to tab a high QB pick unless OB is sold on Savage being able to be that guy.

Trade Andre for Garapolo and then send Foster to Minnasota for Peterson. Become a power running team with a good young QB and build the defense up with the draft.

Sorry went into dreamland for a minute.

This is how we should be thinking no matter who we sign at QB. What has mallet done to prove anything? Build the trenches, protect the QB with a solid OL and make his life easier with a solid running game. Build the defense around the best player in the entire NFL.

Dallas emerged last year because te defense stepped up and the OL became dominate in the run game. Hell that formula made tony romo look competent. Unless you have a superstar QB that is the wY to build a successful team.
