2014 College Football Season

Ian Rapoport on NFL AM this morning...

Q: So Harbaugh is not a candidate for Michigan?

Rapoport: Not Jim Harbaugh.

Rapoport has been way off on this search from the beginning. Michigan has approached Jim and he said that he's interested but he's focused on making the playoffs and not doing anything until the season is over. That's it. Michigan already approached John and he said thanks, but no thanks. Not surprising considering how cushy his job in Baltimore is with a great GM and good ownership behind him.

I would put it about 10% chance Jim takes the job. A lot of things would need to go right but it's still possible. A firm 0% on John. Him leaving Baltimore makes zero sense.

I hope Michigan takes away Les Miles. It would hopefully mean one less good team to worry about in the SEC West.

Heard a lot of chatter about Dan Mullen but I don't know if there's any truth to that.

From what I have heard, Mullen has not even been on the radar for Michigan. That's not to say that he is ruled out, but they have not even contacted him to gauge interest at this point.

My guess is that Les Miles is at the Top of Michigan's wish list.

From what I have heard the wish list is as follows....

1) Jim Harbaugh

2) Les Miles
3) Bob Stoops

Michigan is putting all of its resources into landing Harbaugh. That could backfire spectacularly (and probably will) but they feel it's the chance they have to take. They have to nail this hire. Miles will be a tough pull from LSU but things there are starting to sour and it might not be as hard to nab him as once thought. Stoops is a wild card. The Oklahoma faithful are starting to lose faith in his regime and there is talk of nabbing Stoops and AD Joe Castiglione as a package deal.

This is the list of guys that Michigan has sent out feelers to so far (to my knowledge)...

Jim Harbaugh - HC, San Francisco 49ers
John Harbaugh - HC, Baltimore Ravens
Sean Payton - HC, New Orleans Saints
Jim Mora Jr. - HC, UCLA
Gary Pinkel - HC, Missouri
Kyle Whittingham - HC, Utah
Steve Addazio - HC, Boston College

Not saying it's right but the committee said they put a lot of weight into conference champions and the Big 12 didn't give them one. They asked for conference champions from all P5 conferences and Big 12 was only conference to not give them a champ. They formally presented them 2 co-champions, which is hilarious after all the "one true champ" sloganing they did for months. They spent all year saying they had the one true champ model and at the end of they year they were the only conference without one true champ.

Big 12 tried to screw Baylor because they thought TCU had a better chance to get in and it blew up in their face. Serves them right to be left out. Baylor was the obvious conference champ by their own tiebreakers for goodness sake! The #1 tiebreaker in the Big 12 rules is head to head! And the Big 12 ignored it. There was no right answer with the final four, but the Big 12 gave the committee an easy out because most of the blame doesn't lie with the committee here. It lies with the Big 12.

The selection committee just used the conference championship as an excuse to avoid the dangerous teams. They are COWARDS of the first order of magnitude.

I'm not a hack for the Big XXII (I'm an SEC Guy) but I think it's BS that OSU of the weak ass Little X gets in (and no offense to Ryan or Lindsay from the X) but the Big XII was a much better conference.

Team by team, the Big XII would dismantle teams from the Big 10... As it turns out, this selection committee was more concerned with TV ratings, rather than "getting it right"..... Ohio State would draw more ratings than TCU or Baylor, no??

How did Baylor drop from #3 last week, to out of the top 4 after a week....?

Listen, I have no dog in the hunt, but WTF???

May I add and my griping aside, I am so gladly happy that there is a now at least a playoff situation in play.

It was TCU that made the drop. It was probably because they played Iowa State, a team that hadn't won a Conference game, instead of Wisconsin for the Big Ten Championship.

TCU shouldn't be penalized for playing the meat of their schedule earlier in the season. They have no control over their conference schedule.

They did play two scrubs out of conference, but they also drubbed a Minnesota team that took Ohio St to the wire.

I don't think TCU got penalized for when they played who they played. They got penalized because Bob Bowlsby couldn't clean up his own backyard.

The decision to take a shiny, powerhouse program, coming off a mauling of a good football team to take a definitive conference championship, over having to decide the TCU/Baylor nonsense for Bowlsby became an easy out for the selection committee.

And even though I thought it should have been TCU going in, I don't really blame the committee for coming to the decision they did. Any of the three choices for the 4 spot was going to be a headache and they chose the least headache-y of the three.

I hereby crown Baylor and TCU CO-CHAMPIONS of the 2014 NCAA Football Season since I have only contempt for the idiotic cowards on the playoff selection committee.

Bowl season starts today. There usually isn't much to watch the first few days but we get a really good matchup on the very first day.

I'm excited to see Colorado St's offense go up against Utah's defense. This game is loaded with underrated NFL prospects. Colorado St has more than you would expect from a school in the Mountain West.

Watch for:
CSU SR QB Garrett Grayson
CSU JR RB Dee Hart (transfer from Alabama)
CSU SO WR Rashard Higgins (not draft eligible but he's a stud)
CSU SR OT Ty Sambrailo
CSU SR CB Bernard Blake

Utah JR QB Travis Wilson (has been in and out with injuries but he's huge and very efficient with the ball)
Utah JR RB Devontae Booker
Utah SR DE/OLB Nate Orchard
Utah SR CB Eric Rowe
Utah SR S Brian Blechen
Utah SR KR Kaelin Clay (4 return TDs this year, would have 5 if he didn't infamously drop the ball at the one yd line against Oregon)

Fresno State vs Rice game tonight has a couple of NFL prospects for those interested in some Christmas Eve football.

Rice's best prospect (DT Chris Covington) is out, but they also have WR Jordan Taylor and CB Bryce Callahan.

Fresno State has my guy Derron Smith (FS, #13), WR Josh Harper, and DT Tyeler Davison.

Jordan Taylor is extremely underrated. He's already been productive for three years, but he's going to be a better pro than college player.

A lot of guys to keep an eye on in the early game today. I expect TCU to roll but we'll see.

OLE MISS
QB Bo Wallace, SR - Late rounder that I don't have much interest in but I've seen some guys here mock him to us.

OT Laremy Tunsil, SO - Not draft eligible but definitely a guy to watch for next year. Has 1st/2nd round talent.

DT Robert Nkemdiche, SO - Not draft eligible either but pretty much guaranteed to be a first round pick next year.

OLB Serderius Bryant, SR - Athletic LB who probably projects as a SS. Late rounder.

MLB Deterrian Schackelford, SR - Mid/Late round ILB prospect.

CB Senquez Golson, SR - Undersized ballhawk, projects as a nickel corner. 3rd round grade.

FS Cody Prewitt, SR - My #1 rated DB for this draft class.

TCU
QB Trevone Boykin, JR - Not nearly pro ready but a very good college QB at this point who is still improving. Very raw with incredible potential.

OT Halapoulivaati Vaitai, JR - Athletic RT prospect for next year.

DT Chucky Hunter, SR - Mid round 43 NT.

OLB Paul Dawson, SR - All American OLB who I think projects very well as a guy who could play inside next to Cushing. 2nd/3rd round grade.

MLB Marcus Mallett, SR - Undersized ILB but a very draftable player for a 43 team.

CB Kevin White, SR - Late round CB. Nothing special but decent player.

CB Ranthony Texada, FR - Redshirt freshman who already looks like the next Jason Verrett. Shutdown corner already.

FS Chris Hackett, JR - Ballhawk at FS. Probably won't enter the draft but I am very interested in him next year if we don't improve at that position.

SS Sam Carter, SR - 3rd/4th round prospect, better in coverage than Swearinger.

Georgia Tech taking it to MissState. MissState just tried to run an option that got blown the F up.

Petty hasn't done anything to impress me in the Cotton Bowl. All his WRs are wide open. Literally just pitch and catch thus far.

That's every Baylor game. He's Nick Florence with better size and a better arm.

Big red flag also that there was absolutely no drop off when his backup played for extended periods this year.

I think he has tools but he's the product of a system. He struggles making any throw that isn't a vertical or a screen.

Maybe we should draft the system?

I definitely wouldn't mind seeing Bryce Petty in our offense. He's intelligent, strong armed, very quick release, can extend plays. Needs work in some areas but has great measurables and winning culture.

did anyone just see Maxx Williams take that pass and hurdle the DB for a touchdown? Minnesota vs Missouri

How do you separate the player from the system?
You show him how his skills (footwork, accuracy, touch, strength, etc) work just fine in your system. You protect him with a decent line and give him a solid RB and targets to pass to.

nother topic but what do you think about trying to sign Ray Baluga from GB this off season..had a great season after missing 2013 with hip.

I think Bulaga is easily the top OT on the market and that is exactly why I would be against signing him. He's going to cost too much.

I'm not a fan of adding big pieces through FA. I'd like to add my big pieces in the draft and then add complementary FAs after the first waves of signings have gone down.

as Baylor blows out Michigan ST the Missouri-Minnesota game suddenly gets interesting in second half 19-17 MO.

How do you separate the player from the system?

Evaluation. It's not simple but that's the simplest way to say it.

You evaluate the player's skill set and how it translates to what he would be doing in your system.

Too many people get caught up in how good of a college player a guy is. That doesn't matter to me. Because the game is different in the pros and being good in college doesn't guarantee anything. That's how you get Tebows, Manziels, etc. What matters is his skill set, his strengths, and his weaknesses.

You have to be able to decipher all that information and how it projects to the next level in a different system. Like I said, not simple.

Normally would agree but with our QB situation, I would sign him for RT money---7 million? I think GB will keep him but I would offer

Oh I'd make an offer for sure. But I wouldn't fight for him. RT is a need but I'm not getting into a high dollar bidding war for one.

again we agree. If X can improve and we get a pick or two, I am ok with our OL. Besides, Bulaga probably wants to block for Rogers

I originally asked the question because PayPal said he wasn't impressed with Petty's throws to wide open receivers. Does the fact that he understands the system enough to know where the open guy "should" be & the ability to get the ball to him (some of which were very nice throws, that last bomb under pressure)... aren't those types of things any NFL coach would be looking for?

I sure hope that Petty goes to a situation where he can sit for a year or two and not be asked to save a franchise right off the bat
