2014 College Football Season

Lol @ Texas Tech and their weekly uniform of the day. I've seen players get cut, coaches get fired, but I think this is a first. The unofficial firing of school colors.

This week's episode is Texas Tech apparently sending Texas a message saying "you're not the only Texas university."

This year I've seen Cardinals wearing no red, and now Red Raiders wearing no red. The name and color red is taking a beating this year...lol.

yuckity-yuck-yuck

Man, Hackenberg really rattled here. Penn State can't protect him.

He's been sacked 36 times in 8 games. He played really good in their opener and was okay in the 2nd game. But he reached some point quickly after those games where he lost all confidence in his O-Line. He's under a swarm of pressure on every drop back.

i'm beginning to wonder if he doesn't have small hands based on the number of fumbles and passes that are slipping out of his hand. he also doesn't do much in the way of running the offense the offense. Hack is pretty limited to reading the play off his wrist band and away they go Coaches don't let him do much.

Well we're never really going to know until he gets to a combine and gets them measured. His biggest problem right now is that he's shell shocked. He's given up on his OL and if his 1st read isn't open then he panics because he's been trained by this OL to think he's already out of time.

That's a James Franklin thing. He's done that with his QB's as far back as I can remember.

I see the same things both of you do. Hackenberg has regressed severely under Franklin.

Can't say I'm surprised though. Never thought Franklin was much of a coach. Seems like a snake oil salesman to me.

I really like Hackenberg. But the longer he plays for Franklin, the more damage is being done to his pro future.

I wasn't aware of this story until a few minutes ago. I can't believe Maryland's three captains refused to shake hands with Penn State captains before the coin toss. That, plus there was a pregame scuffle which might not even have been the reason for Maryland's captains to be such turds...lol.

Good reminder that they might look like men, they're really just kiddie troopers.

Edsall and Franklin are both d-bags so you can expect nothing less from their players.

Here's the supposed breakdown from what I can tell:

-Years ago, before he was even at Vanderbilt, Franklin was the head coach in waiting at Maryland. The year before he was supposed to take over as head coach he left and took the Vanderbilt job. So there's some bad blood there on Maryland's side.

-After being hired by Penn St, Franklin was at a banquet in Maryland (there are a lot of Penn St alumni in the area) and said something to the effect that he considered the state to be Penn St's territory so the other schools in the area might as well just shut down their football programs.

-Edsall apparently used these comments all week to get his team fired up for the game.

-His plan backfired. His team decided to treat disrespect with disrespect. They did their pregame warm-ups on the opposite side of the field that they were supposed to, so Penn St's players had to walk through them to get to their warm-up area. This resulted in the scuffle.

-As if that weren't enough, they also decided to refuse the pregame handshake with Penn St's captains, who had nothing to do with anything that happened previously.

Yeah, that's what the article was saying. The rest I didn't know either. Appeciate the info. :thumbup

No problem. I think it's pretty interesting.

I've never liked either guy, and I wasn't shocked to see something like this happen between the two of them.

Washington dismissed CB Marcus Peters today:

I saw a mock couple weeks ago with Texans picking him but I would hope not. He was kicked out of a game earlier this season.

He was suspended in the offseason for disrespecting an assistant coach as well.

Gifted athlete who unfortunately has the potential to ruin it all with his head.

You could have a good "paper" team with guys with off field issues like this guy, Winston, WR Dorial Green-Beckham, OLB Ishak Williams, WR Devaris Daniels, ND's ILB Kendall Moore and CB Keivarei Russell

I'm just not impressed with Winston. Yet again another poor 1st half performance from him.

11/20 for 120 yards and an INT at the end of the half to ruin a scoring drive with FSU down 2 TD's.

He'll probably throw up impressive stats in the 2nd half while FSU plays catch up, but his numbers against quality teams are just not impressive.

The problem is the defense. Hard to grade a guy that has to come back consistently and when there is little chance that your defense is going to be able to stop anyone. The defensive scheming is horrid.

Miami is not even top competition.

Winston is also a big part of the problem. He does great playing catch-up in the 2nd half but is also a big reason they are dug into big holes in every 1st half.

He has as many turnovers as TD's in the 1st half this season.

Exactly. He is off my board :swatter:

I see him as a huge reason we are undefeated. The game is 4 quarters and the kid is 21. He's never lost a game and the defense hasn't been good this year. To each his own.

He is a huge reason FSU is undefeated. Probably the main reason (although they won their toughest game of the year without him). He's also a big reason why FSU isn't anywhere near as dominant as last year. Sure the defense isn't elite like last year, but also.....

1st Half
61% completions
8 TD
9 INT
132 QB Rating

2nd Half
70% completions
10 TD
3 INT
170 QB Rating

- The Seminoles are definitely not the same team as last year but all they have done is just win. On defense they are vulnerable and the offense has not replaced the production of Benjamin or Freeman. Winston, like him or not, does not lose his cool when they get behind and that confidence flows through his team. Other QBs have been labeled with poise when they do this just 1 or 2 times, how many times has Winston led comebacks?

- Big ups to Melvin Gordon on his performance today rushing for 408yds, in his last 2 games vs the Huskers he has over 600yds rushing.

- Georgia has 2 grown ass men at RB, today they punished Auburn physically.

- The Irish have fell off losing to Northwestern.

- Oregon St pulled off another upset in Corvallis against a ranked team beating #6 Arizona St.

- Arkansas won their first SEC game in 13 tries by shutting out LSU.

I thought 158.3 was maximum passer rating...?

NCAA uses different formula and also doesn't have a cap that I'm aware of. For instance, Mariota leads the country in QB rating at 184.6. 2nd place is Garrett Grayson at 171.6. Winston is 24th at 147.4.

I know I sound like a broken record because I say this every week, but I really don't understand what people see in Winston.

Someone please explain to me how he is any different than JaMarcus Russell. I swear I'm watching the same guy.

Can anyone tell me why people are talking about Ohio State being in the playoffs? Who have they beat? They lost to an in ranked Virginia Tech team. Baylor and TCU should be ahead of Ohio State. Only reason I can think of is $$$ and politics.

I won't make that comparison. Jameis does seem to enjoy the competition. Jamarcus enjoyed that purple drank stuff... he enjoyed the after the competition. I don't focus a lot on college but I haven't read where Jameis was lazy or lazy-minded -- both fit Jamarcus. I see Jameis make a lot of bad decisions, but I don't see him as slow-minded.

I think it will be fascinating seeing who drafts him and what that draft path looks like. Should be great drama... watching from the sidelines. I'm sticking with Jets.

JT Barrett suffered a broken ankle today. Real shame as the young man was having a great game and had a great season

I'm not making any off-field comparisons because I don't know enough about either to make a fair judgment. I'm talking strictly on the field.

Both were given credit for playing in "pro" offenses, even though neither really did. They both played in traditional two back sets from under center but that doesn't mean it is a pro offense. That just means the formations are pro style. Neither was given responsibility on the field. The coach controlled that and the OL controlled the protections. Winston is not "directing" the offense. He is just relaying signals that he is receiving from the sideline.

They are both given credit for being the key piece to their offense when neither really is. They were both carried by a superior supporting cast that dominated outclassed opponents.

Neither can read defense but both were given credit for that ability. Winston is not reading the coverage. He is in a two read offense where the first read is open nearly 100% of the time. The plays are drawn up for a specific receiver on each play. The other guys are just running decoy routes to draw coverage away from the designated receiver. FSU really only runs three different passing plays, they just change formation or use motion to make them look different. He took this idea from Mike Leach, who employed it in his Texas Tech air raid offense. The end result is a passing offense that looks complex but is in reality very, very simple. How do I know this? I was at a coaching clinic where Fisher was a guest and went into great detail about his offense.

Both were given credit for being accurate passers when neither was. They were just completing passes to guys who were running wide open. A high completion percentage doesn't always equal an accurate passer.

Oh, and they were running the same exact offense. Jimbo Fisher was Russell's QB coach and offensive coordinator at LSU. What happens at the next level is that Winston will be overwhelmed by pre snap responsibilities because he has never had to diagnose a defense. He will also be overwhelmed trying to read pro defenses because he has never done it.

Notice how on every single play that Winston's first read is not open he ends up throwing into double or triple coverage? It's because he doesn't know what he is looking at. He just sees one of his guys and tries to get him the ball.

This is some MSR ish right here.

To add on...Winston has 21 TD's and 17 INT's this year. Hardly numbers worth considering in the 2nd or 3rd round, much less the 1st or top 10. It's becoming increasingly apparent that he's just a product of the system just like Russell, Ponder, and Manuel. It's quite amazing how many people Fisher is fooling by just lining up under center instead of in the gun. Everyone seems convinced that it's a complex, pro style offense and it's not.
