O'Brien & His Coaching Staffs

Last night I dreamed of going back to high school. Bill O'Brien came in as our new math teacher.
But Romeo Crennel is the one who's responsible for the improved record this year.

Yesterday my snorkel took a desk for my wallet. I then told him he was under arrest, but my mom was never around to play legos.

One of the most valuable assets (or hindrances) a head coach brings is the staff he hires. OBrien has an exciting network of coaches- between his parcels/Belichek connections to his O'leary and Fridge colleagues. Having the same philosophy and vocabulary so the staff integrates and collaborates is part of the recipe for sustained success that is often overlooked. Teams that have to hire coordinators based on resume seldom sustain success for extended periods of time. I doubt that is a coincidence.

#Texans' O'Brien on staying as team's OC: "Godsey did a good job this year. ... It's a collaborative effort." Said OC role will be evaluated

Maybe I am losing my damn mind

Prediction- Doug Marrone will be named Texans Asst Head Coach/OC within next two weeks. He just opted out of his contract with Bills.

"Prediction", by definition, acknowledges other possibilities... I am reading into OBriens relationship with Marrone and the fact that OBrien is still protecting the OC position.

It could be a situation where a conditional offer and acceptance has been verbally agreed to. Say OB has conditionally offered the OC to Marrone with the understanding that he is free to pursue any NFL HC offers. But keep it private for fear that any OC hired if Marrone has taken a HC position would feel like an afterthought.

But this is PURE speculation without a hint of support outside of imagination.

Why would Marrone leave Buffalo to be our OC?

My first thoughts were that there was another HC job open that he likes. He's already been tied to the Jets, but San Francisco looks like a pretty sweet job.

Jets and Marrone are now talking seriously.

Except you have to deal with Kaepernick and the FO there

something i really want to give romeo credit for is the pass rush formation that we developed as the season went on. he found an amazing setup to his rush by leaning on watt. i admit i was a bit skeptical in the beginning because he's known more for a traditionally heavy scheme, but RAC showed me exactly why he's such a nightmare against the better quarterbacks. the formation i mean is when watt is the only man with his hand on the ground and we have another 5+ standing - with or without a safety cheating a read-blitz. with crick's success as the season progressed it moved to having 2 guys with their hands on the ground.

by forcing the offense to set their alignments he almost guaranteed watt an initial single blocker outside. sure watt's not going to get there as fast as a speed rush like freeney, but the help is slower to get to watt, and the drop-zone makes the quarterback hold onto the ball a bit longer than he wants to for the zone option routes to run. fantastic design. maybe this has been done before, but i havent seen it. and no it's not just a "nascar" rush, it's designed around exposing how badly one guy will beat even an all-pro when put on an island - without actually having to commit a full blitz package.

Paul Dunn came to the Texans from Atlanta. They decided 2 go in a different direction. O'Brien will be interviewing prospects 2 replace Dunn

The Texans have fired offensive line coach Paul Dunn. He coached the line for one season under Bill O'Brien.
Dunn was at best O'Brien's third choice.

The TEs (Perry) and ST (Ligs) coaches are ones I would be paying attention to next if they continue shake ups.

Billy really wanted Munch didn't he but lost out to Pittsburgh, now wonder if they could get another shot a Munch ?

Just curious - last year, Munch chose the Steelers over the Texans based at least in part on his Pennsylvania roots. By most accounts, he had a very successful first season with the Steelers. What makes you think he would make a different decision today given the fact that he had basically the exact same decision a year ago and went with Pittsburgh?

More money, more responsibilities, to name a couple of incentives.

And what makes you think the Texans would offer something significantly different than last year? They knew a year ago they were competing with the Steelers (and maybe another team or two, but primarily the Steelers)

Hypothetically speaking, they could get around that with the old asst. HC title...

it'll never happen tho

That exception doesn't exist anymore. It's just Head Coach and Asst. Coach with all Asst. Coach's being created equal whether they're the Jr. Asst. Quality Control Coach or the Offensive Coordinator/Asst. Head Coach.

Cuz now he's got more to show than a hall of fame career and 10 years with the fuddruckers

Hypotheticals aside, he's under contract. This is a non-issue.

Does it make sense to you that they would fire Dunn without an inside line on someone already?

Not necessarily Munch, like you I don't think that's going to happen, but surely they've got someone else in mind, or... they just didn't care for Dunn.

Interesting.

Won't happen. Munch is an OL coach only, or a HC which he wants to try again. He went "back home" at a time when questions were being asked about Steelers HC Mike Tomlin. Then Antonio Brown and Le'Veon Bell blew up.

There's been some chirping about the Ferentzs in Iowa after ugly bowl game, but that may not amount to anything.

Regardless, I don't think O'Brien will have trouble finding a better staff fit. He was really under a time crunch when his preferred prior candidates strung out their decisions. Interested to see who's attracted.

Not sure what this was all about. Not saying they are the ultimate judge, but PFF rated the Texans o-line 5th in the NFL. 3rd in run blocking, 12th in pass blocking. Not sure they were that good, but they weren't obscenely bad (like in 2013). Seems like something other than just results are involved.

Inability to coach up X for one?

OB's guys are very active, very hands on, loud in praise & correction, and perfectionists. Dunn didn't have that personality, wasn't a staff fit. I think he was on a one year deal no matter what in OB's mind.

When we hired O'Brien, I said that the vibe I got from him was that the was the type of person who would hire his friends, but, fire them if they weren't working out.

Not sure if Dunn is a buddy of his, but, my point stands: O'Brien doesn't appear to be afraid to make staff changes if he doesn't like what he sees. If Dunn were under Kubiak he'd probably get an extension of several years. lol.

If I were the Special Teams coach, I'd be hiding in closets right about now...

O'Brien firing the OL coach shows that he is a man dedicated to winning and will make the tough calls needed to get us to the promised land. Kubiak would NEVER fire an underperforming coach unless he was forced to.
