O'Brien & His Coaching Staffs

My money is on ferentz. The good thing is that OB isn't going to be like Kubiac and let guys of the hook that don't have their units performing well.

I like the different philosophy of BOB.

Coaches/players produce or your gone.

When we hired O'Brien, I said that the vibe I got from him was that the was the type of person who would hire his friends, but, fire them if they weren't working out.

Not sure if Dunn is a buddy of his, but, my point stands: O'Brien doesn't appear to be afraid to make staff changes if he doesn't like what he sees. If Dunn were under Kubiak he'd probably get an extension of several years. lol.

If I were the Special Teams coach, I'd be hiding in closets right about now...

Funny.

1st, I don't think Dunn was a friend of O'Brien's.

2nd, Lucky shows that PFF (who we all believe as credible) ranks our OL as 5th in the league

3rd, Dunn gets fired.

I'm slowly warming to OB, but if OB is firing a guy because he "doesn't fit" regardless of how well his unit is performing, we may be in big trouble. The anti-Kubiak.

Personally, I expect an OL to take time to gel & I think after Mallett's first game, the OL play picked up (DBrown said they started having meetings with the QB about that time).

I'm happy to see someone get fired, don't get me wrong. Just wondering.

If someone sees light at the end of the tunnel, you raise concerns the tunnel is caving in

They just announced it on 610.

I like it.

Could this not have stood on its own?

I hadn't listened to the radio today and I had no idea he was fired until I was just messing around waiting for the rockets to start.

Not complaining....mods do a great job. Best board I've ever been on as far as how it's run and all. Not even close.

But just wondering...it kind of got buried in here.

There were already 4-5 posts in here on the topic otherwise I'd have left it.

Ok. Makes sense.

Just saw there was a whole convo about it before mussops post.

Anyways regarding Dunn...

I thought the line performed better under him than Benton, but under Benton it seemed like a lot of technique stuff....under Dunn it seemed like guys were just lost at times.

I don't know. That's a very, very distant observation without having paid a whole lot of attention to specifics, but the line didn't seem to really progress as a unit over the course of the year.

I'd expect a good coach to have his line firing on all cylinders the later in the year it gets.

Like what I've heard about ferentz though. I really love that blocking style. It's art.

Is it confirmed Ferentz is in?

now that IS interesting. Fifth best O-line performance, overall, in the league with all the mixing and matching we were doing early on plus the marked improvement of Newton....
This guy got fired WHY exactly??

@alexmarvez: Source tells @NFLonFOX that @nyjets asst coach Mike Devlin will be @HoustonTexans new offensive line coach replacing the fired Paul Dunn

Ladies and Gentlemen - your new O-Line coach, Kenny Powers!

Wow... that didn't take long.

Wiki is already updated, showing him as a Houston Texans OL coach.

I don't see any obvious connection to OB, but he was an interior OLman for Iowa, which ties to Ferentz.

Man, I could not tell you anything about our o-line coaching, but I do like the fact that O'Brien is willing to make the hard decisions to change things that he perceives as an upgrade to his team.

My gosh, I personally REALLY, REALLY don't want this guy to be associated with the Texans, and I just saw on the Mort and Shefty show that there is a strong possibility that Doug Marrone comes to Houston to be on our coaching staff.

Why???

Why not? It's not like he was fired by the Bills. He left them after delivering a winning season in his second year.

I don't have a problem with Doug Marrone. he was the OC of the Saints when Payton took over. Brees' first years there. Those were some pretty good offenses... "everybody" saying we need an OC anyways.

But I'm sure he'll get a HC job before it comes to that.

Chris Mortensen @MortReport
If Doug Marrone does not land a head coach job, sources say he will have an offer to join close friend Bill O'Brien as a Texans consultant

We knew this.

That's OK. As long as his advice isn't to coax Kyle Orton out of retirement (again).

No, his advice was 1) don't draft EJ Manuel in the first and 2) don't spend our 2015 1st round pick to trade up for Sammy Watkins -- both ignored by Whaley and Marrone had to "sell" to the fans. Orton they had to bribe with $5 million guaranteed just so they could have a QB.

I still think that was overreacting. Marrone's job was to win, of course. But, his job was also to develop talent. I think he quit on Manuel too soon. I'm not saying the GM has done a great (or even good) job. But if he hadn't of opted out, I would've fired Marrone.

This is why I think, like Parcells said, where the head coach controls the draft and the GM gets the guys the coaches tell them to get, is the right one.
When the GM and HC are of the same mind, it doesn't matter. But if they aren't, it could be bad.

Marrone led them to their best record since 1999.

An even Manuel's college coach said "he didn't believe Manuel had the tools to be an NFL starter and he shouldn't be any better than a third-round pick", according to Adam Schefter.

Bill Polian had the chance to be the "czar" of the Bills, but turned the offer down after he learned Marrone would not be there. It's a mess, imo.

If you've got one of those GMs that hire their HC, chances are pretty good they'll be of like mind.

Yeah. My opinion was that the 9-7 record was based upon the defensive play. How much Marrone had to do with that (or bringing in Schwartz) I don't know. It's not like the Bills had much to work with on offense. But Marrone knew that when he took the job. Buffalo isn't in a great spot, for sure. I'm sure he had his reasons for bailing. It's just that if I were the Bills GM, I would be looking for someone who's on the same page, anyway.

Rex Ryan is walking into a very similar situation as he did with the Jets. Very good defensive personnel and an offense without a QB.

The big question is....will he get a tattoo of his QB with the Bills?

The right coach might make something out of EJ. He's not the right coach to do it.

That's adding another wrong coach IMO. Haven't seen any stellar QB development from Carr or Kaep under him.

Yep, he's definitely a Rex Ryan type of OC.

He's had one year (out of four) in San Fran when his offense ranked better than #20 (By yardage), and Kaepernick spent 2014 regressing.

It will be fun watching what Ryan will do with that defense. In particular Mario Williams.

Playoffs noted in another thread, but so it doesn't get lost in there (for possible future reference...

Pat O'Hara to Texans
JACKSONVILLE - The Jacksonville Sharks announced Tuesday that Director of Player Personnel Pat O'Hara will leave the organization in order to pursue an opportunity with the National Football League's Houston Texans.....

position w/ Texans not announced at this time

John McClain ‏@McClain_on_NFL

Texans hired Pat O'Hara as an offensive assistant coach and elevated Anthony Pleasant to a defensive coach.

Pat O'Hara is QB who excelled in Arena League, was a coach, broadcaster and worked as QB trainer on several movies like The Longest Yard

Anthony Pleasant was assistant strength and conditioning coach who's elevated to defensive assistant.

Of course Johnny Mac can spin the movie angle....

Interesting move, O'Hara goes from front office to coaching.

Edit, I see he was a Head Coach in 2014 so I guess his front office tenure never really got off the ground:

http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pat_O'Hara

46 years old.

Edit, edit: "...in 2005 O'Hara served as a player-coach, playing quarterback and calling the plays as the team's offensive coordinator."
