The Johnny "Football" Manziel NFL thread

I do know that there would be a lot more excitement in Houston if he were on the roster opposed to Clowney.

Especially with hindsight, I can't see how.

Clowney & Bridgewater I get, he was there for the taking.

Robinson & Bridgewater I get, that's where I am.

Watkins & Bridgewater I get, who wouldn't?

But Bridgewater in lieu of Clowney... I'd say the Texans panicked & overdrafted. I'd be one of those "Bridgewater can do no right" fans & fire Rick Smith guys (yeah, I want him gone anyway).

sad part in all this, is the kid is just guilty of being a punk, and last I checked being a punk ins't against the law yet they write a chronology of his year like he is a felon....

I actually feel bad for Cleveland, they will have minute updates of Manziel all off season....

"MANZIEL JUST TOOK A CRAP! COULD HIS TIME HAVE BEEN BETTER SPENT WATCHING FILM WHILE ON THE CRAPPER?!?

No he's not just a punk. He's a crappy employee who was paid $4.9 mil this year who seems incapable of showing any dedication to his craft.

Nobody would give two shits if he had a party on Friday night if he had spent 90 hours at the facility that week and then came out and dissected a D on Sunday.

I'd have still been fine with teddy at 1.

In hindsight, a trade up one spot for teddy instead of sua filo and savage would have been great to me.

Or if he showed up on time for his treatment.

Completely agree. I was as ardent a supporter of Manziel as anyone, but I was PISSED when they didn't trade up for Bridgewater. When he fell that low, I felt like it was a classic buy low situation. And look at who we took at 2-1. Was he even active once this season?

Is this an attempt at sarcasm? Or do you not watch Texans games to know XSF was active for every game until he got injured and missed the last 3 games.

I initially wanted Bridgewater at the 1st pick. However I let the talking heads and media sway me away from him a bit. By the time the draft rolled around I was on the draft Clowney because he is that special bandwagon, so I can't be too critical of the Texans.

I also didn't like the Bucs taking Mike Evans so what do I know? Evans dominated on a very bad team.

Now I am on the Bucs taking Winston bandwagon, however that may change after tomorrow. It's pretty cool that Mariota and Winston are going head to head tomorrow.

He looks like one of those guys that could be a game changer for a franchise. I don't see how he'll get past the top 10. If Tampa doesn't take him, surely Tennessee would.

I've been watching interviews & off the field stuff with him & I just don't like him. Personality wise, he reminds me of McNabb & I was just never a McNabb fan.

Johnny Manziel Chuggin' Champagne

1231_johnny_manziel_poolside_champagne_launchJohnny Manziel clearly does not think he's got a drinking problem ... 'cause the Cleveland Browns QB was chugging champagne right from the bottle in Miami on Wednesday.

Manziel and his girlfriend Colleen Crowley were sitting poolside at a Miami hotel ... sippin' away under the sun on Veuve Clicquot Rose'.

At one point, someone handed Johnny what appears to be a mixed drink -- and he took that down too.

Interesting move ... considering he's been under fire for reportedly missing an official team treatment session following a night of hard-partying.

In fact, ESPN's Skip Bayless went on the air and said he's convinced Manziel is an alcoholic after speaking with several people in the Browns organization.

Clearly, Johnny isn't fazed.

This is the attention he wanted; he brought this on himself with his "hey look at me antics on & off the field." Now the kid can't even go and get a drink with his "friends" without TMZ snapping pics of him. That would be a miserable existence for me.

Every time I see something about this kid now, I can't help but think of the 30 for 30 documentary they just finished on Brian Bozworth. I wasn't really of age to know all that about him back then, but the parallels between him back then and Manziel now are striking. Its funny though, In reflecting on that time in his life, Boz seems to be quite contrite and somewhat embarrassed these days. I don't see Manziel going that way; more like the Ryan Leaf Art Schlicter way.

And flipping the bird is only going to antagonize them worse. Dumb.

Enough talk, Browns should release Johnny Manziel and Josh Gordon
Pat McManamon | ESPN Cleveland Browns reporter
BEREA, Ohio -- Every player on the field for the Cleveland Browns in Baltimore on Sunday showed what it means to be a professional.

Their two teammates who could not even show up for work on Saturday did not.

It’s time for the team to put words to action and release Josh Gordon and Johnny Manziel.

The team might miss Gordon’s talent, but it won’t miss the complete lack of professionalism the two have shown. Waiting on them to change is waiting for Tinker Bell. Enough...

So supposedly manziel was in a Houston club
flipped off a heckler and got drinks thrown on him
http://www.wtam.com/onair/mike-trivisonno-2339/johnny-manziel-supposedly-had-drinks-thrown-13117942

We spoke with J.R. from Sticky Promotions -- who was with Johnny that night -- and he tells us people were shouting at Manziel and aggressively trying to take pics.

At one point, a frustrated Manziel flipped off one of the hecklers -- and that's when J.R. says the drinks started to fly."

Aggressive photographing... that's a felony, no?

...
One source said some coaches became upset when a high-ranking personnel member texted from the press box to the sidelines about play calls.

The coaches also may have felt pressure to start Johnny Manziel in the biggest game of the season, with the playoffs on the line. No mandate was given from the front office, but some staffers felt that the higher-ups wanted to see what their No. 22 overall pick could do. Shanahan did his best to bring Manziel up to speed, but it was evident he wasn't ready to play when he started against the Bengals, and flopped miserably.

Now, it appears that general manager Ray Farmer is willing to give Manziel another shot next year, and not everyone in the building is in agreement that the former Heisman Trophy winner has what it takes to succeed. Browns coach Mike Pettine has said the quarterback situation is "muddy at best'' and that the Browns will leave no stone unturned in their bid to fix it.

I wonder if the big Manziel/Cleveland Browns fans billboard is still up in Tyler, Texas. Gotta love it!

Tyler, TX is now Cleveland Browns Territory

Judging from the fact that only the knee area of her jeans are worn away......one can reasonably assume her role in the group.

Shanahan leaves Browns
The Cleveland Browns' tradition of change continues, as a team source told ESPN.com Thursday that offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan and quarterbacks coach Dowell Loggains will not be retained.

Both spent one year with the Browns, and both were under contract for 2015.
...
Sources familiar with the situation said the split was caused because the pair did not see eye to eye with the front office about quarterback Johnny Manziel. The front office wants Manziel to be the starter, and the source said the coaches do not believe they can win with him.

Shanahan felt the decision to start Manziel was forced on the coaching staff, and that the yearlong insistence to play him when he wasn't ready wore on Shanahan, the team source said.

According to the source, Shanahan is an extremely popular coach among the players, many of whom feel Brian Hoyer is a good quarterback.

"They are both smart to get out now," another source said about the exits of Shanahan and Loggains.
That's two rookie QBs whose '14 OCs will be employed elsewhere in '15.

I truly feel bad for the Brown's fans. They are a football hungry bunch and an owner that is a freaking tool when it comes to his product on the field yet they love football so much that they suffer the pain

Inside Manziel's rocky rookie season
...
Interviews by ESPN.com with nearly 20 Browns sources, both on the record and on condition of anonymity, along with several NFL personnel sources reveal the Manziel-related problems run deep.

Those who spoke talked of a year-long pattern that showed a lack of commitment and preparation, a failure to be ready when given a chance in his first start against Cincinnati and a continued commitment to nightlife, which affected his preparation and work while in the team facility.

As one player put it, Manziel throughout the entire 2014 season was a "100 percent joke."
Some said it should not have been a surprise, that the Browns were well aware what they were getting.

"During the draft process, not one person interviewed by the team said he was going to grow up," said one source directly involved in the drafting of Manziel. "You can't blame Johnny. This is who he is. The team knew that."...
Manziel was not present the morning before the season finale. Team security drove to Manziel's downtown home to check on him. The Browns were packing up for the season finale at Baltimore on Dec. 28.

Two team sources said security found a player who they felt clearly had partied hard the night before. One source used the words "drunk off his a--."...
The Browns have an honor system with fining players for tardiness to team activities -- $250 for first offense, $500 for second, etc. The money can go to charity.

It's uncertain how much coaches collected from Manziel, but one source said Manziel was late often enough that it was never a surprise when he was...
But readiness became an issue once Manziel got the starting job the following week. Several sources said Manziel either didn't know the plays in the huddle or didn't call them correctly. The Browns tried to get him comfortable by using shotgun and pistol formations on about 80 percent of his downs and by simplifying the offense.

But more than once, teammates corrected the play-call in the huddle, or headed to the line hoping things would work because the call was wrong. Sometimes, the offense would get lined up wrong because Manziel forgot to read the whole play or got the verbiage wrong (saying "left" instead of "right," for example)...
Some veterans "clearly didn't want to play for [Manziel]" because of the lack of readiness, and they responded better to undrafted rookie Connor Shaw in part because he knew the plays, sources said. It wasn't lost on players that Shaw played through a dislocated finger on his left hand and a rib injury that had him passing blood after the season finale, while Manziel played six quarters before hurting his hamstring, then missed treatment on the injury on the final Saturday because he was still in bed...
Manziel still has support in the building, particularly on the business side because of the attention he commands in stadiums and merchandise lanes. Though the team said football decisions were made without influence or pressure, some coaches and many players had the clear perception the business and marketing end of the team favored the guy whose jerseys would sell...

Why in the world would the Browns have ever put him on the field if that were the case? They should have put Shaw in & gone from there. Johnny should have been put on the scout team if he was displaying this kind of lack of commitment. Shaw should have been getting back up reps.

If the owner had issues with that, then he should have taken more steps to get Johnny in on time.

Yeah, but that homeless guy... :kitten:

I felt there was a real problem during the draft. If anyone will take a chance on a controversial player, it's Jerry Jones. Probably 99% of those following the draft knew Jerry was going to pick up Manziel when he fell right into his lap, and I certainly recall standing up and thinking here comes Johnny. Then the announcement of with the 16th pick the Dallas Cowboys select Zack Martin. After a moment of shock, those of us communicating seemed to have been thinking really!, followed by surprise and awe, hey, yeah, good pick. Manziel had been a guest at one of the games that I attended, so I thought he was already being positioned for the upcoming draft.

I also recall when he was sent home from a football camp that the Mannings were hosting in Louisiana and thought there was more to that than met the eye.

I hope he gets his act together and either commit to the job or move on to his true passion.

Inside Manziel's rocky rookie season

I really liked this part:

Farmer will not reveal where any player is ranked on the team's draft board. Sources, though, said Shanahan liked Jimmy Garappolo, now with New England, or Tom Savage, now with Houston. Debate existed among assistant coaches about Manziel's draft ratings, with some not giving him a first-round grade.

I also recall when he was sent home from a football camp that the Mannings were hosting in Louisiana and thought there was more to that than met the eye.

A buddy of mine was at that camp with his son and saw it all go down. Manziel showed up late reeking of booze and still looked a little drunk.

This is what happens when owners hire people to make football decisions and then overrule them on those decisions.

Only the Browns could have pulled this off.

Johnny Manziel was at another awesome party tonight. He parties hard during the weekends. Friday and Saturdays are his Holidays especially during the off-season. Even during the NFL regular season he's no stranger to partying hard until 4 AM. This guy doesn't care about improving as an NFL quarterback and learning a playbook. He's making his millions and living the young man's dream. Will he be out of the league entirely in four or five years? Another Vince Young? Who knows. But right now his mentality isn't that of a professional .

"During the draft process, not one person interviewed by the team said he was going to grow up," said one source directly involved in the drafting of Manziel. "You can't blame Johnny. This is who he is. The team knew that."

Yeah, man. This grown man should not be blamed for refusing to act like a frigging adult. That's just, like, unfair.

A common argument leading up to the 2006 draft was that VY should be the pick because of marketing and jersey sales.

A common argument leading up to the 2006 draft was that VY should be the pick because of marketing and jersey sales.

A recent A Football Life covered the 2006 Rose Bowl. VY actually said that he would have stayed in school for his last year if he had known that the Texans were not going to draft him. Even in hindsight, his arrogance and inability to accept responsibility for his own actions is in question.

Manziel is a poor man's VY.

I still don't see him having a career in the NFL, but props to him if he's serious about getting right.

Per Johnny Manziel’s advisor Brad Beckworth, Manziel entered treatment on Wednesday. “He thought the off-season was the right time.”

"Brad Beckworth, a friend and advisor to Manziel and his family, has confirmed that Johnny entered treatment on Wednesday,'' the statement read. "Johnny knows there are areas in which he needs to improve in order to be a better family member, friend and teammate and he thought the off-season was the right time to take this step.''

With his family history the potential was there. He'll do a genogram in treatment that will open his eyes. Best of luck to him. :handshake:

It seems everyone knew he had a problem but him. In any case, I'll root for the kid to get himself together and this could go either way. Many people start their habits b/c they can't effectively manage the daily pressures they face. Him off the sauce could make him better....see chris carter...or he may not be the same player that everyone saw and was mesmerized by at A&M.......see Ryan Leaf.
