All Encompassing Andre Johnson Thread (Just got some disturbing news about A Johnson)

Wow.

I was wrong when I said Andre has two options. He only has one: Play football for the Houston Texans. Don't retire, don't sit out, and don't half-ass it.

Andre's reaction to this is somewhat understandable. No one likes being told they have no options, or that they have absolutely no control over their own fate. Maybe that's why he demanded the $1 million back. He doesn't like the feeling of being totally owned by the franchise he's worked so hard for.

He needs to take a step back and assess this situation. He's completely out of his element on matters like this, which is fine, since this isn't his expertise. What is not fine is the advisor who has failed to grasp the terms of the contract, and is either giving him bad advice or (just as bad) none at all.

Right now I'm hoping that some trusted party can reach out and give him better guidance.

By the way, how many Rick Smith critics out there still think he sucks now?
Could not Andre agree to massive cuts in his compensation which would make a trade very feasible ? Or could he not play football in the Canadian league ?
He has options, but what he doesn't have are options without significant sacrifices on his part.

As to the pay cuts, he could agree to that, but according to Ian Rappaport, Andre has said he's willing to restructure, but not take a reduction in overall pay.

Ian Rapoport @RapSheet · Jul 10

On Andre Johnson: Source tells me he would restructure his contract to help a potential new team get under the salary cap. Not a pay cut tho

As to the CFL, I don't know for certain, but I'm guessing that the NFL contract he's under prohibits participation in other leagues without express permission from the team. Regardless, the average CFL player earns less than $100k annually, and the team salary cap for the 2014 season (which started in June for whatever that's worth) is $5 Million, so I don't think that's the solution to AJ's current predicament.

I know it's hard to believe, but a team first philosophy is not an invitation for failure. In fact, it is quite the opposite. But it does take some time for divas to get used to it. Fortunately, we only have a few of those.

Never said it was. But every successful organization in the world recognizes it's high achievers.

There's no organization in the world where the mantra of team-comes-first is more important than in the Armed Services. Yet they recognize high performers and at every level of performance from the Medal of Honor all the way down to Good Conduct medals.

I suppose if one or more of our guys gets player of the month or rookie of the year O'Brien will not acknowledge that accomplishment because the award is not about the team...

:toropalm:

AJ isnt going anywhere, in the end he will be playing in a texans uniform next season. His hissy fit/pitty party did nothing but cost him a million bucks. If he dont go to training camp he will lose even more.

I expect we will all see him at training camp as i doubt he wants to lose anymore money. He may be unhappy at first but once he gets back here, sees what we are doing and reconnects with old team mates he will be fine.

I think people are taking this whole team first thing out of context. We were 2-14 last season as a team, i think O'brien wants to change the philosophy here. Right now it is all about learning his system nothing else. I think it is more about who cares what you did in your career or during that amazing 2-14 season, but it is about what are you going to do now.

"If all you do is sit and admire your past accomplishments then how will you work on future accomplishments"

what would have been wrong with, "I see you got XXX done in the past, but I can take us to an even HIGHER level if you learn my system and execute it properly and with the discipline I will demand from you"...?

I think he sucks even more now.

Whether in business or diplomacy, you should always try to negotiate from a position of power. Rick has certainly achieved that here. I'm not going to fault him for doing his job too well.

Ideally, McNair can step in and make an exception for Andre's $1 million. That would convert a problem of Andre's making into a free gesture of goodwill that would boost everyone's morale. It would've been bad precedent if offered by Rick, but it's a special exception for a uniquely historic player if offered by McNair.

People do things differently, only one out of 50 guys got offended ? Cant please everyone i guess

Who's to say that's not exactly what O'Brien has been talking to him about during the conversations that have been ongoing since he got here? It's been reported repeatedly that the two have been in contact often from day 1. I'd think O'Brien is smart enough to know how to handle the situation, regardless of what some here think.

AJ posting those numbers would not be surprising, but I suppose I'd be surprised if we have a QB on the roster that can get him the football enough to post those numbers.

I hate to say this, but this is the lowest I've ever felt as a Texans fan going into a new season, and that includes David Carr's 5th year when we all knew he was broken. Fitzpatrick on the roster is just not something I can garner any optimism about, and while I hate that feeling of being a Debbie Downer, I just can't shake it and I'm not going to put up a fake act about it.

Hopefully, it'll all diminish once the season starts and O'Brien's skills as a head coach reveals Fitz having the best season of his career. And that, my friend, is my attempt at optimism.

Don't be so low,

The Texans cant get worse QB play than Schaub/Keenum provided last yr and AJ still put up great numbers. I think that the Texans after last yrs draft, if they can remain healthy and Foster/Cushing perform at 90% the Texans are going to surprise some people.

There's little doubt in my mind that the Texans coaching staff has been upgraded and that's with a rookie HC.

By the way, how many Rick Smith critics out there still think he sucks now?

Well if I go with the premise that both the Texans and AJ wanted 3 more years together, then I'm disappointed that the mutually agreed upon contract is now so onerous as to eliminate the chance of extending that relationship.

No way will he want to waste one whole year in the CFL towards his goal of HOF.

Unless I missed something, that premise is not correct. Andre wanted out because of the collapse and rebuild, not because of the contract. At this point, the contract is the only reason there's any chance he may still play for Houston.

AJ knows this is his last season, under the current contract, where the Texans won't be highly tempted to cut/trade him. Next off-season AJ will be one year older, the team will have FA and the draft to address WR, the current group of young WRs will have a year of growth, and the team can save about $8 million on the 2015 cap by moving him... not to mention the $16 million saved in 2016. Add to that fact that the Texans will also begin working on a long term deal with JJ Watt... AJ does not want to adjust to a new system and coaching staff during a transitional year and then be dismissed before getting a chance to reap the rewards in the future seasons. Also, as each year passes, his value in the NFL market decreases. I understand his position and attempt to get something done now.

All that being said, successful organizations have often have to take a hard line in these situations- focused only on the best interest of the team's immediate and long term future on the field. As a fan of the team, I want them to remain stubborn... particularly since I believe that his explosiveness has diminished considerably since the injuries sustained in 2011.

This is how I take it as well.

Texans has control with this situation so, we can play tough with AJ and AJ can do nothing about it considering potential HOF is within his reach if he keeps playing in the NFL. I don't think he will retire now. He needs to play so, he will continue to play for the Texans. Should Texans has someone that they have their eyes on than maybe but I doubt it. I think, BoB needs AJ to be a competitive team this coming regular season. All the dust is settled, AJ will be Texan this year.

If AJ leaves after this season, I hope the Texans really put an emphasis on getting another legit WR. I think Nuk will be good, but I just don't believe he's a #1.

Agree. This is a culture change, where he's simply looking at everything, and trying to improve. O'Brien is trying to set high standards. Nothing wrong with that at all.

Perhaps.
But I've seen no evidence that he has.
All I've heard from O'Brien is that he had spoken with Andre and coachspeak statements like "I have a lot of respect for what Andre had accomplished in this league"... blah, blah, blah...
to be fair, Andre isn't exactly in logical, listening mode either.

siiiigh...I fear I've seen the last of these...

I hope like hell I'm wrong

Yes Rick Smith (McNair's yes man) still sucks at his job. Unless that job is only maximizing McNair's profits. If that's the case he's doing a great job.
Well Duuuh...
Every employee's job should be to maximize the company's (and therefore the owner's) profits. The more profitable the company is, the more they can afford to pay you.
any other attitude is sorta dumb.

Sound response and like we both know, neither of us KNOW. We'll all find out together and until that happens it's all conjecture. But hey, that's what we do best! :D

Thanks much for posting those gifs. It took me a while to respond, I caught myself being mesmerized.

Very likely the most accurate statement in this whole, blessed thread.
might as well get comfy and watch things unfold

oh by the way, both of those TD passes were from Case Keenum... I wonder if Fitzmagic could make those throws

...another Can-0-Worms that camp will shake out. I sure haven't counted Keenum out. I sure hope he's able to grasp the defensive reads and take over. Like others have pointed out though, O'Brien didn't bring Fitz in to be magic, just a manger that can get out of the turn over slump. I hope he can manage that.

thinking back I wonder if the FO new this would happen woud we be picking Watkins #1 ..????

the Hopkins and Watkins Show .. we would have two young WR's but no QB to throw 2 them LOL

According to 610 this morning, the season tickets have come out with pictures of a bunch of starters on them but no Andre.

Can ST holders confirm this is right and if so what do we read into it?

Keep him off to save face if he does leave?
He's definately leaving?
Or just a small f you Andre from the FO?

IF???????.................

Jayson Braddock @JaysonBraddock · 45m

Andre Johnson will also tie Jerry Rice as the only players with 4 seasons of 1,500 receiving yards, IF he accomplishes it this year.

Jayson Braddock @JaysonBraddock · 46m

Do you think Bob McNair wants Andre Johnson to catch his 1,000 reception in a uniform without a #Texans logo on it?

Jayson Braddock @JaysonBraddock · 47m

Andre Johnson will become the 10th player in NFL history to record 1,000 receptions when he catches his 73rd pass this year. #Texans

IF???????.................

I like the if game

IF i was bill gates i'd be a billionaire

IF i was Channing Tatum i would be a whore

IF Lord Bills was a texans fan he would say US

IF people were smarter they could stay off the short bus

OK

i really do hope AJ accomplishes all those things this year as a member of the texans.

First he needs to dry his tears, leave his pitty party, put away his snuggle with a picture of Johnny Football and bring his ass to camp !

Alex, I'll take Things I'd Never Say To Andre's Face But Go All Hard On An Internet Forum for $1000 please.

Pretty sure i worked around murders, rapists at a max facility unit for 3+ years, starting at age 19. There isn't much i wouldn't say to someones face, including AJ. A place like that gives you courage you never knew you had or shows you that you aren't as tough as you thought you were. I made it 3 years so take it for what its worth.

I have no opinion on whether you are tough enough to say it to his face. I'd like to think you weren't douche enough to do it.

HAHA it is not about tough enough, and no i would not say it to his face just because i still respect the guy and all he has done for this team.

"From a leadership standpoint, Dre doesn't talk," he said. "Just having him there, he's one of the GOATs. He's one of the best receivers to ever lace up his cleats."

"He is Houston," Foster said. "I remember when I had my little run where I had like two back-to-back great seasons. I felt like this city loves me, they love me here. Everywhere I go, this is still Dre's city. I don't care if James Harden is walking around, Dwight Howard, whatever. This is Andre Johnson's city. He is Houston. That's what it means more than anything. He's been a staple here for so long."

The Texans went 2-14 in 2013, and have just three winning seasons in their 13-year history. The franchise has made the playoffs twice. With the lack of prolonged success, Foster says he gets why Johnson wants to play in a different uniform.

"I understand where he's coming from," he said. "I really do. This is a business and people forget that it's a business. He's at the point of his career where he doesn't want money now. He just wants to go win.

"Ultimately that's one of my friends outside the field. So I want him to do what's best for him. If he doesn't feel like playing anymore, he wants to hang it up then I'll support him. If he wants to come back and help us win, I'm all for that as well."
