2014 Texans Talk Mock Draft SELECTION

R'nRandy has has the Steelers now. I will be following this, it really is a bright spot in the off season. I took in 8 bikes in the last two days and don't have the time to commit.

This is my third year and the first I've bailed but you're in good hands with Randy. We only see him during the draft, he's a Draft Nut :D.

Draft well guys!

I don't want to take a mulligan on #26 because that's ****ty to do to other folks who had to pick after me, but if I could, I would take Kelvin Benjamin because he might develop into a #2 WR. Davante Adams, Allen Robinson and Donte Moncrief would also be in the discussion, but at #35 if I went DB at #26. Anyways, maybe Kyle Shanahan can start a new offensive trend with 2 slot receivers on the field at a time! We can make up some stupid catchy name for it like "the Jackpot" or "the Super Slots!" Stupid cheapass Bengals...

Anyways, the Browns need some help in the defensive backfield. TJ Ward was the starting SS for 4 years until he left to join the Denver Foreheads, so we replaced him with Donte wHitner (the W is silent). Not a bad deal IMO, Ward had no interest in playing for the Browns, so no point in tagging him if he's going to be a little *****. Joe Haden looks to be turning into the next elite CB of the future, so we have 2 of 4 starting positions filled. Buster Skrine is a decent CB, but would be better suited as a Nickelback than a fulltime #2 CB. FS is currently a void the size of Lake Erie. Soooo with that said, the #35 pick in the 2014 TT Mock draft is...

Bradley Roby - CB - Ohio State - BIG 10

roby-nebraska2.jpg

Roby is a fast CB (40 time of 4.39), with a lot of talent, but some personal red flags. I think with the right environment and coaching the character concerns can be mitigated. But is Cleveland the right place for that to happen? Probably not, but **** it I'm taking a shot. Roby will be going against #2 receivers as Haden takes on the elite talent of the opponents, so I expect him to ease into this role. He will also have some help from a decent pass rush up front, which reduces the pressure on man CBs. Plus, we're in the AFC North, where the best #2 WR is currently a brokedown Steve Smith, so it shouldn't be that difficult for him to adjust. He should have all the opportunity in the world to be successful, so I hope he makes the most of it.

Nice pick Dutch. Also, I wouldn't get too down about jumping on a WR early. Beckham (5-11, 198) is a good player and he's not 'just' a slot WR, IMO. He's bigger than Steve Smith (5-9, 185), who has played all over the place during his career, and possesses roughly the same size and athleticism as Robert Woods (6-0, 201). Sure he's not the prototypical #1 guy, but that's why Cleveland has Josh Gordon no? I really like Beckham as a #2 option.

We're probably done for the night, but Oakland is now on the clock.

04(36) Oakland Raiders (MistaRed) ON THE CLOCK: 7am - 11am
05(37) Atlanta Falcons (JCTexan)
06(38) Tampa Bay Buccaneers (TexansSeminole)
07(39) Jacksonville Jaguars (The Pencil Neck)

I'll be on in the morning if ATL, TB, or JAX can't wait Oakland out and need to PM a list.

I like bigger WRs on the outside personally, the little guys get the slot and do the dirty work underneath, running short routes and short screens. I think Beckham would be really good at that, but Hawkins, as you said, doesn't really have any other use than in that slot role. I thought the Bengals were going to match the Hawkins deal, as reported a few days ago, but they didn't. Travis Benjamin also has the opportunity to fight for that #2 WR spot, so that's another factor in the decision. A big guy like Kelvin Benjamin would be an excellent Red Zone target too, and someone that might help draw some attention away from Gordon.

Oh well, I got Bortles a new toy to play with, and a #2 CB. I'll probably go heavy on defense the rest of the draft, but I really could have waited on the WR position. Lesson learned.

Not too sure on the specifics, but I think Cleveland front loaded the first 2 years of the offer sheet to scare Cincy off. Apparently his cap hit this year will be $5.8 million.

I PMed my picks for JAX and TEN to Blake and Dutch.

I would have PMed them to you, WolverineFan... but I just don't trust you. :spin:

Sporttrac says the Bengals have 28m in capspace, i don't' think that was the issue.

Ealy does not fit Crennel's typical 300 LB 2 gap 3-4 DE and is a tad slow to move outside to the 3-4 OLB position.

If he did then he probably sent it to Blake, who is gone for the night. I assume the pick will be made in the morning so we're likely done for the night.

Nothing from MistaRed, but TexasSeminole, TPN and JCTexan sent me a top 3. So this thing can still get moving sometime this morning. Thanks guys. People after them, get ready.

I hear you. He was rated so high compared to everyone else that fit better and I've seen countless DLine make the transition.

When Antonio Smith came out he was playing in a 4-3. He was skinnier too, but bulked up.

Almost the exact same measurables as far as H/W

Plus I believe that he can pretty easily put the weight on, but was probably working hard to keep it off so that he could use his speed around the edge:

STRENGTHS Is long and has a big, projectable frame with room for added bulk. Quick off the snap.

Every one of these teams at some point in the game is going to put my hand in the dirt. Some of them like me as a standup linebacker. It's pretty much the same deal as how the 49ers utilize Aldon Smith – sometimes, they stand him up, and sometimes, they stick his hand in the dirt. Some teams could see me playing a 3-4 defensive end, five-tech, with a little bit of extra weight. Some teams want to see me standing up in a two-point coming off the edge as a Jack linebacker.

I'm NOT saying that he is a perfect fit by any means, but I don't think we can rule out that he can never fit the scheme either. Plus isn't Romeo's 3-4 regarded as a hybrid or something like that? Regardless, I hear what you're saying.

Does anyone really know, without just quoting Roto or sources that talk to talk, the intricacies of a Romeo D? Is there anyway to move Ealy or Merciless over to Brooks Reeds spot and kick him to ILB? I don't recall Vrabel having game changing speed and remember both him and Willie McG putting on a pass rush in NE.

Dutch and the Browns building the Buckeye secondary. Maybe since they're from Ohio there will be more of a sense of loyalty to the Browns. (Probably not.) Good pick

Thanks, I figure if he willingly spent 3 years at Ohio State, he won't mind moving 2 hours north and staying in Ohio (that's an actual consideration for drafting for the Browns). He is originally from Georgia, so I assume he acclimated to the weather.

The same things they are saying about Ealy they were saying about Aldon Smith/McGinnest/Dumerville/Harrison etc... (Tweener) Truth be told, if you can rush the passer that's all that matters. I think Ealy will be a good pass rusher/possibly a great pass rusher since he's playing opposite Watt. At worst if Ealy isn't a good pass rusher I'm sure he can put on 25 lbs and become a 5 tech. Good pick

Agree. Very worthy of that pick.

Oakland Raiders select Derek Carr - QB - Fresno State - Mountain West

No Schaub just yet, and Sammy Watkins needs a QB to throw him the ball. Also they just signed Donald Penn to beef up the o-line.

Kony Ealy is a great pick for the Texans at OLB. He was a monster at Missouri, and made the guys around him better. He got the most attention from opposing o-lines, which freed up guys like Michael Sam to get some pressure from the weakside. Without Ealy, I don't think Sam sniffs the SEC DPOY.

With the 37th pick the Atlanta Falcons select...

Morgan Moses - OT - Virginia - ACC

Having passed on Matthews & Lewan in the first round, the Falcons decide to take an OT to protect the 100 Million dollar QB with Morgan Moses. Moses should slot in at RT immediately, with Sam Baker remaining at LT..

Sorry bout that. You are coming up soon. Got a plan B? You gonna be around or PM them?

I should be around / if it takes longer than expected to get to me I'll PM. Gotta make that final decision. Even if I've been targeting a guy all round I always feel hesitant to pull the trigger.

Great pick. Big fan of your draft so far.

08(40) Minnesota Vikings (NCTexan) ON THE CLOCK 9:40-1:40
09(41) Buffalo Bills (Blake) GET READY
10(42) Tennessee Titans (The Pencil Neck) I have his top 7.
11(43) New York Giants (mussop) GET READY
12(44) St. Louis Rams (RT22) GET READY

Same here. The Jaguars were targeting him.

Carr IMO is going to be one of those guys where you must buy the first pick of day 2 to get because several teams who waited on a QB will be looking at him. Kinda makes me giddy knowing the Texans have that pick.

The problem is that the Jaguars have a lot of later round picks, 11 picks overall. If they don't go QB in the first round, I full expect them to trade up into the end of the first to nab Carr if he's still there.

Via proxy, The Pencil Neck and Jaguars select:

David Yankey - OG - Stanford - PAC-12

Carr was my first choice but he got nabbed. :(

But this Jaguar line is a shambles. They signed Zane Beadles. Who sucks. But he was an upgrade.

So here, with Yankey, they get one of the better guards in this draft and hopefully (for them) start down the road to shoring this thing up. You plug this guy in and he's an immediate upgrade and a day 1 starter.

Sorry guys, was walking to class real quick.

Carr was the target here. With him gone the Vikings switch to replacing Jared Allen (I really want Barr to stay OLB in the 43, which I think he can do if given a year or two to develop to a Von Miller type role) and take Dee Ford, DE, Auburn. Give him the chance to prove he's a better DE than Clowney and compete against the shadow of future-HOF Jared Allen.

Definitely more defense heavy than I was expecting for the Vikings so far, but BPA and need seem to be lining up on that side of the ball.

The Buffalo Bills Select:

Kelvin Benjamin - WR - Florida State - ACC

Not sure how he lasted to pick #41, but ill take it. E.J. Manuel has a shiny new right tackle in Jake Matthews to protect him and give him time to deliver a strike to his new stud WR. Benjamin may not have elite speed, but he is a mismatch nightmare for defenses to game-plan for. He is also a clutch gamer who can make the big play when it is needed the most. See 2014 National Championship ending. Could be a #2 possession receiver, and could continue growing towards a #1 wide out. Football life is young.

No worries. You got your pick in quick. Vikings upgrading the pass rush big time here with Barr and Ford.

Exactly.

I fully expect the Titans to pick a RB here. I'm not sure exactly which one. I was leaning toward Carlos Hyde but in the end, I just felt like Tre Mason would be the guy for the Titans.

I expect CJ2K to be moved prior to the draft.

Carlos Hyde is a .... thug. OMG! He said the T word! Dude beat up a woman. But he is from Ohio State. What do you expect.

Carlos doesnt deserve to be drafted any higher than the late rounds. But some team will overlook his shady character flaws and try to cash in.

just logged on. dont skip me.:jogger:

I dont have any more PM picks at the moment so I think you have some time. If you want, PM me your top 5 and I will make extra sure to pick the right guy this time! haha

Clinton-Dix and Louis Nix for some reason just confused my brain...

You didn't get my top 3 in the PM I sent you for the Lions.

I will be leaving the office around noon and will probably not be back in until around 3:30 or 4:00 would you like my top 5 for the Bears?

Hey I got your top 3. And Texinators top 6.

If you have a top 5 for the Bears that would be good to send us (Dutchrudder, WolverineFan and Blake.) just in case.
