2012 Texans Talk Mock Draft

How many of you are all in with RG3?

Is he really worthy of being in the discussion with Luck, Kalil, Claiborne and Blackmon?

I'm all in with RG3.

I would trade this yrs 1st and 3rd and next yrs 1st and 3rd to get him. It probably still wont be enough to get him.

I consider him to be a better work ethic/ smarter version of Vick. He's going to be great. IMHO

I agree. However, Luck is going to be even better IMO.

There is something in the back of my mind that came out last year that he was considering not turning pro. Does he live, eat, breathe football or is he a Carr clone?

I had a really good feeling for Dalton and even stronger for Newton, not so much for Griffin.

Although I can buy taking him to replace Ponder.

Next up:

7- Jaguars- HouTex
8- Dolphins- RMartin65
9- Panthers- Timekiller
10- Bills- Texan4Ever

Just want to reiterate this, it's for everyone's benefit so this doesn't last until the actual draft. Also, make sure your profile is set to an email that you use often.

Hey guys, one other thing that can help speed up this process is to enable email from other members on your profile. Some have it, some don't, but I would imagine people check their email more often than this site. To enable it, go to "User CP", then click "Edit Options" on the side and make sure you have the box checked for "Receive Email from Other Members". I may use that to notify people when they have it enabled.

With the 8th pick of the 2012 NFL Draft, the Jacksonville Jaguars select:

Quinton Coples, DE, North Carolina

ncf_u_coples_bl_600.jpg

To me, this is a no-brainer pick. The Jags need help practically everywhere on defense. With Coples there at 8, the Jags had no choice but to select him and instantly upgrade their pass rush.

Nice pick. Coples was going to be the pick here if you took this guy...

With the 8th pick (the Jags were 7th), the Miami Dolphins select Iowa OT Riley Reiff, 6'6" 313 lbs

Riley-Reiff.jpg

A big kid with a massive frame, Reiff will be a day one starter at RT for the Phish, and will likely be a 10-15 year starter at the position. I know it is the chic pick for the Dolphins, but I feel that it is the right move. Some picks just seem to click, and this one does. Also, I am not viewing QB as a huge need- I am banking on Flynn coming here in the off-season.

You say the Jags need help practically everywhere on defense...

But weren't they pretty good defensively last year?

Yeah, the jags only real defensive needs are pass rushers. But this is turning the D into a super strength i would guess. Hard position to be in, without trades and FA. You'd have to suspect they've somewhat addressed the WR position.

Wish we could do these after FA, but then it rushes the process prior to the actual draft.

I'd be up for doing a 3 or 4 round draft April 1st. Maybe other would be interested too. It would be cool to compare the picks based on FA and franchise tags.

They were pretty good last year due to their DT and LB play, imo. They need pass rushers, safeties and another CB. They really need safeties, but there's none worthy of a 1st round pick.

On the clock:

9- Panthers- Timekiller
10- Bills- Texan4Ever
11- Chiefs- Honoring Earl 34
12- Seahawks- Ndevine7
13- Cardinals- Brandon420tx
14- Cowboys- SteelBTexan
15- Eagles- Shaft75

I have PM'd Timekiller. By the way, please note at the bottom of your pick when you PM the next person. It will help things move faster if the person making the current pick PMs the next guy. Keep it flowing and enable emails in your profile!

three tackles in the top 10. very need focused. other than Kalil not sure they all grade out this high. never the less solid additions.

Hey, so sorry I didn't even catch that it started!

Did a little reading on the Panther's forum, seems quite clear they've locked in on getting a big time DT to boost their defensive front. Personally, I'd go with Melvin Ingram, David Decastro or even another DT but since this seems like the big flashy name pick I'd like to take the plunge:

DONTARI POE, DT, MEMPHIS

The big man who put up eye popping numbers. Why not? Could be the next Haloti Ngata. Could be the next Amobi Okoye.

They took a 'gamble' last year on Cam, why not roll the dice again. If the guy learns how to play football, he could be a beast.

Honestly, not a fan of the pick. I have Poe at ~32 on my board. Too much hype around the guy for me to spend a high first on him. I'd rather go with another DT that was available.

In any case, you can make the pick however you like. You don't have to worry too much about what other people or fans think about the team, you are the GM and you answer to nobody :D Pick who ever you think is best for that team according to your own evaluation. That could be BPA, position of need, guy with the cool name, surefire HOF guy... whatever, but don't feel pressured to make a pick based on the fanbase or beatwriter's opinions.

We got some time until the next pick, as the Bills GM said he won't pick until this evening.

Well like I said, I'd like to reflect the opinions of the people who are more in tune to the Panther's progressions. It's really not even much of a topic other than which DT to get. With that settled, me being a "go for the gusto type"....Poe's the pick. Brockers, Still, Worthy...all good picks IMO, even other positions like Ingram or Decastro are definitely BPA. But a man that big who can move it and shake it like Poe just doesn't come around very often. Going for a splash, I might just have ended up with a world record setting "CANNONBAAAAAALLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

someone had to do it :smiliepalm:

Ehhh, I agree with him. Much better prospects available, especially for a 4-3 team.

Not gonna dog the guy or anything because a real GM is going to do the same thing come draft time, but the guy's film does not say top 10 talent. Hell it doesn't even say 1st round talent.

The 1st nine picks have been very interesting.

3 OT's and 2 DL.

I think Texans fans have learned that building a great team starts from the inside out.

Either that, or the skill position players (besides Blackmon) arent anything to write home about.

Trying to talk myself out of Tannehill being an immediate upgrade over Sanchize for the Jets.

Please someone between 10-16 take him out of the equation. :kitten:

Ill just add that generally coaches in their 4th season dont start over with new QB's. Unless Rex has a guarantee from the owner that he has multiple years left as head coach.

Yeah totally wouldn't happen. Although if Luck or Griffin by some miracle fell you would have to think twice.

I just really don't rate Sanchez, and as an ex-Jets fan (pre-Texans existence) I have a soft spot for them.

I wouldn't be surprised to see something like this happen at the actual draft. The Giants have laid down the blueprint.

Interesting comments so far but the biggest reach for me was the Jonathan Martin pick. No offense meant but I would have thought him to be a last third of the first round at best pick. Though having said that I saw him anywhere from 20 to 75 on different websites.
After sounding a bit negative there I have to admit I've checked the site around 25 times the past 2 days seeing if I'm up next

I've seen Martin go as early as nine. It mostly depends on your feelings about Reilly Reiff, some people don't think he has what it takes to be a LT in this league and drop him in value, while Martin is generously considered at least the 3rd OT. I've seen him projected in the top half of drafts for months

Reiff is a RT so if you're in for a LT then Martin is the next logical choice.

We've seen with OT's and QB's that it doesn't matter if you're the #20 rated prospect, you still have a great shot to go top 10 because it is a premium drafting position.

Excellent point & reason why you see the same teams always picking early, they fail to capitalize value.

That might change with the new CBA. Draft picks won't be getting paid $50 mil anymore so teams won't have as big a problem taking non-premium position players as high.

I went with Martin as i have him higher on my draft board.
Also the redskins in this draft (possibly in the real one) are in quite the pickle as there was no real BPA that would fit a real need.
It was either martin or floyd (again who i have higher then blackmon) but i feel that the WR group is not that bad and they will probably grab someone in FA

I agree but that Alabama RB was staring at them also. If they don't trade up, I see them possibly trading down.

yeah would have loved to trade down.
Helu fits what they do well. they run the zone-blocking scheme like us and don't need a first round talent to fit that. so richardson i never really considered.

With the 10th pick in the 2012 NFL Draft, the Buffalo Bills select...

OLB/DE Courtney Upshaw

upshaw.jpg

Lacks the height (6'1") or speed you're looking for but, was very productive at Bama' racking up 31.5 tackles for a loss and 15.5 sacks the past two years. He can play standing up or with his hand on the ground which is perfect since the Bills can't decide whether or not they want to run a 3-4 or 4-3.

Safe pick

10 yr starter, football is important to him.

With the 12th pick in the 2012 NFL Draft, the Seattle Seahawks select

Melvin Ingram DE/OLB South Carolina

ncf_a_melviningram_cmg_300.jpg

Seahawks need a DE and Ingram is the best available. Ingram is also one of the best players available and is a freak athlete. I see a perennial probowl player here.

I can see the Cards reaching for OL help here after DeCastro, Martin, and Reiff are gone since they don't have a second round pick. However I'm not much of a reacher and instead I'll look to help the Arizona Cardinals offense in another way.

With the 13th pick, the Arizona Cardinals select Michael Floyd, WR from Notre Dame. This should help Larry Fitzgerald with his double-triple coverage issues. The last few seasons rookie wide receivers have had about a 50% chance to make splash with their new teams, and the Cards gamble slightly on this one. Luke Kuechly is also one of my top 4 for the Cards who also consisted of DeCastro and Martin. LK might be a safer pick but Arizona could be desperate for some sexiness.

So ya, Michael Floyd
