How is FA going, Rick????
People need to stop freaking out. We are up against the cap and were not going to be big shoppers. We all knew this going in. Yet that never stops people from losing it because we haven't signed 3 starters yet.
There are still plenty of guys still out there that can come in and contribute to this team. No reason to get caught up in the feeding frenzy that is the first few days of Free Agency and do something stupid. Here's a list of some guys who are still available. Many of them could be had for cheap if there is slow market for them.
All we have done since midpoint last season is unload starters while only signing a few un-impactful players...it's time to worry!

BJ Raji would make a lot of people happy.

2-14 last year and less tLent on the roster. Playoffs!
So, are the Texans so cash-strapped that they can't even make a run at second-tier players like Lamar Woodley, Tyson Jackson, or Brandon Spikes?
D-Ware or Revis weren't ever coming obviously, but I was hoping for some average free agents to fill some holes. Aren't there only two defensive linemen on the roster? Cam Thomas and Ziggy Hood are out there.
Totally agree. It's kinda funny to read through this thread. What did people expect was going to happen? The top teams in the league build through the draft and add complementary pieces through FA. No reason to put your 2-14 team in salary cap hell by making bad deals on the first few days of FA. Wait it out and find the guys that are bargains.
Yet teams like the Patriots and Broncos are making early big FA signings, they both help build a team.
The Patriots and Broncos aren't "building" anything. Its already been built. They're adding pieces to complement what they already have. The Bucs showed the past few years that just going out and making big splashes early doesn't always translate to wins. The Texans have way too many holes to fill than to overspend on 1 or 2 pieces that won't make a huge difference.

Big difference between the Pats, Broncos and Texans......2-14
You said "I am suggesting guys who can be had cheap and on short term deals." I'm saying I don't think SS or BB will be cheap for the Texans. We don't have much money to play with right now, and I doubt Steve Smith will come here unless we are the highest bidder. I think Smith will get an offer of about 5m APY for a couple years from a contender. I don't think he would choose the Texans unless we make a much higher offer in the 7m+ range.

Anyone that was expecting the Texans to reel in a top tier FA with our crappy 2-14 record and limited cap # was fooling themselves.
We will sign several FAs this Summer, but they will be JAGS. JAGs, draft picks and UDFAs will fill the remaining roster spots.
They are building, every team who is adding players is building to improve their roster. If they were perfect then they wouldn't need to add players but obviously they do.
I didn't say anything about making a big splash, I could care less about getting one high payed player(although certain big name players could benefit the Texans). We have made NO moves, the only moves we have made are getting rid of pour players and now we are at practice squad caliber players as starters. Yes I know this is the start of FA and we still have the draft but you make my point by saying the Texans have many holes to fill so they need to start doing it sometime and that sometime is now.
The draft picks and UDFAs will be part of the process regardless, I don't know how this translates to us not making any FA moves starting now to fill the obvious many holes we have <Snip >
Would have been a good addition for Texans at RT.

I'm seeing a lot of reasonable deals for players that could have made a huge impact input team.
Steve Smith just went for 3 years $10.5 to the Ravens. $3.5 mil/yr.
I wasn't too far at $4.
He did have a poor year. But he sustained a severe right ankle sprain in Sept which he characterized as "the worst of my career." Like Newton with his patellar tendon surgery, Oher was never given time to recover and was dogged by it the rest of the season. You could actually see him limping during many of the games.
There's that Cap Space thing ya know? There's no a whole lot of sense in "pooring" more money into big names that aren't going to make the impact that will get us to where we want/need to be. Shirley you've been exposed to the results of the the teams that have taken that approach and how well said teams have prospered doing so.
(insert Obis' "grasshopper") meme here.
"Inauspious"? Possibly, but not unusual or unexpected. It is not the MO of the Texans' organization to be active in the first wave of FA signings. We'll sign some FA players. The Bob Smith era is off to an inauspicious start to say the least...
Now it's just the Rams.fun fun fun fact...
Rams and the texans only teams too not sign ANYONE in FA so far.
Now it's just the Rams.

When Schaub traded, Texans will add $3.93 million to their cap, making them... 10.23 under cap. That's plenty of room to sign more lunch-pail types in free agency. They're desperate for help in D line.
