Revis cleared of all charges in assault case
Mitch Sanderson Mar 15, 2017 1:59 PM
The judge in Darrelle Revis' assault case dismissed the free-agent cornerback's charges on Wednesday.

Revis was facing charges of aggravated assault, robbery, and terroristic threats after his alleged involvement in a fight in his native Pittsburgh last month. The former New York Jets defender was in town to visit friends and family.

According to a police statement, he was approached by a 22-year-old who began filming the cornerback. Revis took the male's phone, tried to delete the video of himself, and then discarded the phone into the street. Another 21-year-old male tried to retrieve the phone when another skirmish occurred. Both the 21-year-old and the 22-year-old alleged Revis punched them, knocking them both out.

Related: Video released of alleged aftermath of Revis incident

The cell phone video retrieved by the police confirmed Revis was involved, but a voice could be heard that the cornerback's lawyers denied was his client's.

At the hearing, Revis' childhood friend, Rashawn Bolton, claimed he pulled the young men off Revis and punched them after they were attacking Revis, according to NFL Network's Aditi Kinkhabwala.

"If you was my friend and you said you was getting jumped, I'd help you," Bolton told the district attorney, according to Kinkhabwala.

Bolton also claimed that it was his voice that could be heard on the video.

While some might assume Bolton was taking the fall for his famous friend, his attorney said there was "unequivocally" no financial incentive for Bolton to take the guilt, and reiterated it wasn't Revis who threw the punches.

Quickly after having his charges dismissed, Revis was back to talking football, saying he wants to keep playing, and would be open to moving to safety. He's hoping the incident won't leave a black mark on his legacy.

"What happened is in the past now and all I can do is move forward," he said.

Report: NFL competition committee to propose shortened OT, full-time refs
Dan Wilkins Mar 20, 2017 2:06 PM
Among the several potential rule changes that will be discussed at next week's owners meetings is one that would give teams far less time to break a tie in an extra frame and one that will finally significantly alter the officiating program.

The NFL's competition committee is set to propose a shortened overtime rule, which would cut the additional quarter in regular season and preseason games from 15 minutes to 10, according to NFL.com's Judy Battista.

The competition committee will also recommend the league hires full-time officials for the 2017 season, a source told ESPN's Kevin Seifert.

Overtime periods in the playoffs would reportedly remain at 15 minutes, but that's less of a factor considering a winner must be determined in all such situations. The NFL approving the amendment would increase the odds of regular-season ties, and that can be considered a drawback.

As Battista adds, though, the idea is to avoid the situation where teams are on short weeks and have to play a full additional quarter.

The move to full-time officials has long been considered an inevitability in order to combat the increasing pressure put on referees in the modern NFL. The league's CBA with officials allows the NFL to convert them to full-time roles, but most officials have resisted the change.

Seifert notes that the recommendation would be for officials to be allowed to phase into the program before it became mandatory by the start of the 2020 season.

Report: Ban of leaping FG blocks among likely NFL rule proposals

Rule changes have to be approved by a vote among league owners, where at least 24 of 32 are in favor.

Report: Ban of leaping FG blocks among likely NFL rule proposals
Dan Wilkins Mar 20, 2017 11:09 AM
Field-goal attempts may soon get a whole lot less fun.

Among the expected competition committee rule proposals at the upcoming league meetings is a ban on players jumping over the line of scrimmage to block a kick, Mark Maske of The Washington Post reports.

Consideration for a change seemingly comes in response to the success defensive units have found in having a single player leap over the long snapper untouched.

As Maske adds, the proposal for a ban would be with player safety in mind, protecting both the defender and anyone he may land on following such an attempt.

Also reportedly expected to be on the table is the idea of automatic suspensions for illegal hits and the relaxing of much-criticized regulations on celebrations.

Changes to any rule would have to be approved by way of a vote among the league's 32 owners.

With the newest OT rules where each team gets a possession unless a TD is scored, we're going to start seeing a few more ties if they cut the quarter from 15 minutes to 10.

Yeah as really Goodell is ruining the NFL. And there is talk of getting rid of F.G.'s putting the Kickers out of work.

:foottap: Sonofabitch. Our main / big signing this offseason was our FG kicker. Re-affirms my belief that there is a league conspiracy against our Texans.

Do away with punts (punter, our other big signing) and we are really screwed. :pissed:

Now...I could get on board if they would outlaw passes short of the first down marker.:thud:

Oklahoma running back Joe Mixon is the most controversial player in this year’s draft, a first-round talent who was caught on tape hitting a woman in an incident every bit as ugly as the one that ended Ray Rice’s career.

Some teams have confirmed, however, that they’re still considering drafting Mixon. Other teams won’t give him a thought. We can add the Patriots to that latter group.

According to the Boston Herald, the Patriots absolutely will not even consider drafting Mixon.

That means the Patriots will join the Dolphins, who also have reportedly decided they don’t want Mixon and his baggage on their team.

So much for the Patriots don't care about character.

Jerry Jones: Latest Ezekiel Elliott incident “not good”
Posted by Michael David Smith on April 1, 2017, 5:37 AM EDT

Although Cowboys owner Jerry Jones has insisted there’s nothing to the NFL’s investigation into an allegation of domestic violence against Ezekiel Elliott, Jones acknowledged this week that Elliott could stand to handle himself better off the field.

Asked about another Elliott incident, in which he pulled a woman’s top down in public, Jones said Elliott shouldn’t have done it.

“There is not much that I want to say other than that was unfortunate and not good,” Jones said. “It wouldn’t be the right emphasis one way or the other to get into any communications or dialogue since that happened.”

Asked whether he has communicated that to Elliott directly, Jones declined to answer.

“Again, that wouldn’t be the right emphasis to imply,” Jones said. “I wouldn’t want to say on communication, but I’m aware of the incident and I’m aware of the criticism.”

Elliott has taken a lot of criticism for the way he conducts himself off the field. He had a great rookie season, but he is not having a great offseason.

*********************

Of course neither Jerruh or the League will act on this incidence.

So clearly they don't care about winning..

Lets make a football team into a Sunday School Class since they play on Sunday and that's what the McNair's really want.

BTW, Mixon will go in the 2nd rd.

Hope the Texans don't get treated as badly by Mixon as they did by Hill last yr if they have to face Mixon next yr.

What does Sunday school have to do with the price of tea in China?

Why would either act, beyond reprimand, on an incident with no charges that the woman involved was not upset about?
Yep, no reason. The NFL only acts on only the most egregious players' actions where they are almost forced to do so by public outcry. The player conduct policies aren't important as long as the player makes money for the League.

I'm sure looking at the list on page 2 of the NFL Personal Conduct Policy, one could find a couple of instances where Elliot falls out of what the NFL and its Policy expects. After all, the Policy was established to help control off-field bad behavior by its players and preserve the league's public image. It typically does do the latter, usually by minimizing or burying the former.

And there's something wrong with going after the more serious offenses, you know the ones that actually reflect poorly on the league?

What have the league or Cowboys done to minimize or bury this? Isn't minimizing an insignificant act treating it straight? You know the chick partied with him the rest of the day right?

This seems like sniping just to beotch about Goodell and the league.

I've read the accounts. My bad. I didn't think that this was college anymore. Whether she even liked it or not, it was done by him in public.

For the first time, Vegas casinos will take bets on the NFL draft
April 8, 2017, 7:27 AM EDT

Bettors in Las Vegas casinos will be able to place bets on the NFL draft for the first time this year.

The Nevada Gaming Control Board granted approval for betting on the draft this week. Bets on the draft have never been allowed in Nevada before, although some online sports books based overseas have offered NFL draft bets.

Bets on which player will go first overall or on any individual team’s selection will not be allowed, as it would be too easy for someone with inside information about a team’s plans to win. But Nevada sports books will offer prop bets.

Those bets will include how many quarterbacks are taken in the first round, whether more offensive or defensive players are taken in the first round, when the first kicker will be taken, the number of players taken from a particular college, which conference has the most players taken, the number of players taken at a certain position, and so on.

Nevada sports books have long made a huge portion of their proceeds from betting on NFL games, and now they’re looking to make money in the offseason as well.

Report: NFL will fine players who were at Las Vegas arm wrestling event
Dan Wilkins Apr 10, 2017 10:39 AM
The NFL will fine players who participated in an arm wrestling event last week in Las Vegas, as doing so put them in violation of the league's gambling policy, NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports.

More to come.

Andrew Luck is coming off major shoulder surgery, and no one is talking about it. In this era of excess coverage of all things NFL, the mysterious recovery of one of the sport's most indispensable players oddly has attracted little attention.

The January surgery on Luck's throwing shoulder came as a surprise, with details initially scarce. It wasn't until late March at the Annual League Meeting that Colts owner Jim Irsay told Fox59 in Indianapolis that Luck had a "slightly torn" labrum, a regrettable phrase that sounds like calling your wife slightly pregnant.

There is no timeline for Luck to hit the field again. Reading between the lines of comments from Irsay and coach Chuck Pagano, it will be a major surprise if Luck is on the field during OTAs or minicamp season. Irsay told Fox59 Luck should be "pretty close to being ready" by training camp, also implying the 27-year-old QB could be brought along slowly. Placing Luck on the PUP list to start camp would not be a surprise.

Adrian Peterson to sign with Saints

http://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/19237595/adrian-peterson-says-signing-new-orleans-saints

Adrian Peterson tells ESPN's Josina Anderson Tuesday morning that he plans to sign with New Orleans Saints on a two-year deal that is effectively a 1-year deal plus a 1-year option.
Peterson told Anderson that the deal is worth a base total value of $7 million. Here are the terms Peterson says he has agreed to at this point. The 2017 compensation is $3.5 million (all guaranteed at signing), which includes a $1 million guaranteed salary in 2017 and a $2.5 million signing bonus.

The maximum incentives packages is $8.25 million and whatever incentives reached in 2017 gets added to the per game roster bonuses in 2018.

The 2018 compensation is $3.5 million (none of which is guaranteed). {It includes $2.4 million in total roster bonuses, (which includes a $750K roster bonus earned on third day of free agency plus $1.65 million in per game roster bonuses), $1.05 million salary and a $50K workout bonus}.

Bridgewater “tolling” issue likely will be moot
April 27, 2017, 7:40 AM EDT

In response to the ESPN report that the Vikings likely won’t pick up quarterback Teddy Bridgewater’s fifth-year option before the May 3 deadline, NFL Media reported that it won’t matter, if Bridgewater spends the full season on the Physically Unable to Perform list.

Per a source with knowledge of the situation, that’s currently a very, very big if. Bridgewater is currently not expected to spend the entire season on the PUP list. Which means that his contract would definitely expire after the 2017 season, if the Vikings don’t pick up the option.

Even if Bridgewater doesn’t exit the PUP list in 2017, it’s still not entirely clear that Bridgewater’s four-year contract automatically would extend to five years. If it does, a disagreement could emerge between team and player as to whether Bridgewater should exit the PUP list during the midseason window that allows players first to practice and then, if healthy, to join the active roster.

Also, if the Vikings can indeed toll the contract by not activating Bridgewater from the PUP list in 2017, why not pick up the fifth-year option and extend the deal through 2019? If they think he’ll stay on PUP in 2017 and that he won’t be ready to play by 2019, that would be the most ominous news yet regarding his knee injury from nearly eight months ago.

***************************************************************
My original skepticism reflected in these posts following his injury seems to have been borne out.

Just finished the All or Nothing series on Amazon Video following the 2015 Arizona Cardinals.

Calais Campbell is going to be a solid addition to the Jags. Obviously he's a stud DL but he's also a leader. The Jags could certainly use veteran leadership in that locker room and now they've got some :(

Ricky needs to pick this guy up. He's from Clemson so there is that and the Texans darn sure have the cap space. The compensatory picks thingy wont fly with Gilchrist.

Maybe @CloakNNNdagger can chime in?

I'm pretty sure Gilchrist is coming off a torn patellar tendon. Latest rumor was that he may not even play this season.

With our medical staff, I'm not comfortable with that.

Rick Spielman: Teddy Bridgewater decision was all about health
Posted by Michael David Smith on May 5, 2017, 8:30 AM EDT

Vikings General Manager Rick Spielman officially declared this week that the team will not pick up the fifth-year option on quarterback Teddy Bridgewater’s rookie contract, and he says that decision was all about the knee injury Bridgewater suffered in practice last summer.

Spielman said on PFT Live that Bridgewater may still have a future in Minnesota, but for now the team just can’t count on him being healthy enough to play.

“It doesn’t mean Teddy wouldn’t be a Minnesota Viking, it just means, where his health is at this point, we wouldn’t pick up his option,” Spielman said.

Spielman noted that the Vikings picked up 2013 first-round pick Sharrif Floyd’s fifth-year option and are now on the hook for his $6.757 million salary this season even though he suffered a knee injury that could be career ending. The Vikings had some bad luck with first-round picks in both 2013 and 2014 suffering very serious knee injuries while still on their rookie contracts, and they think picking up Bridgewater’s option would risk making a bad situation even worse.

Patellar tendon rupture is a potentially career-negating NFL injury.

I've posted on this injury in the past. But here is a recent 2016 study you might find interesting that puts this injury into perspective (it is worthwhile reading in its entirety).
NFL players' careers most affected by surgery to patellar tendon, Achilles tendon and ACL
........................The researchers found that players who had knee surgeries experienced the most significant decline in performance. Athletes who had surgery to repair the patellar tendon, the tendon connecting the knee bone to the shin, fared the worst with respect to the RTP rate, career length after surgery, games played and performance at one year, two years and three years after surgery.

Players had a RTP rate of only 50 percent after patellar tendon repair, which was significantly lower compared to all other procedures analyzed. After ACLR, players experience significant declines in statistical performance even three seasons after their injury.

"Our findings related to patellar repair and ACLR highlight how devastating a tendon or ligament injury to the knee can be for an NFL athlete," said Hsu. "A healthy knee is crucial to a player's ability to pivot, jump, run, kick and make stopping movements- all elements of the game of football -- so it's not surprising these procedures would have strong impact on performance.".................

I should also mention that in April 2015, Gilchrist was dealing with a significant shoulder injury. He was kept out of activities until TC. It wasn't publicized, but he quietly had undergone an arthroscopic shoulder surgery.

Thanks for the info

I didn't know that.

If healthy Gilchrist would be a perfect fit on the backend of the secondary. He's really solid, I should've known something was wrong with him. Players like this don't just become available this time of yr.

Ok, I was thinking something totally different in a "weeding program".... carry on.

(back to my bible study)

Wow Baylor WR KD Cannon was cut immediately after rookie minicamp with the 49ers. He was supposedly one of the top undrafted rookie free agents available and I wouldn't have minded us using our 7th on him. Wonder what is wrong with him to be cut so quick?!
