NFL Random Thought of the Day

The Raiders think tank still remains challenged when making deals............they didn't have the money to pay a stable Mack (most important position after QB), but had the money to pay nut job like Brown.........it won't end well............and the Raiders will continue to be the Raiders. Look out Derek Carr.

So no hold out, no one getting muddy?

As far as the Raiders & their think tank, they gave up Amari Cooper & his contract for a 1st round pick. They gave up Khalil Mack & his contract for two 1sts & a 5th'ish.

They pick up Brown with a ridiculous contract for a fifth & sixth.

I hope BGaine is taking notes.

More trade news: The #Chiefs are deep in talks with the #49ers on a trade for star pass-rusher Dee Ford, sources say. Things have escalated and this could get done by the end of the night. Ford needs to work out a new contract with SF, which is a big piece of this.

Interested to see the trade and the contract. I expect Clowney to be traded prior to the drafta.

I think trades will be a lot more common nowadays after what Bell/Brown have done. Players are willing to sit out now and teams want to get something tangible in return.

Really? Why would the Texans do that when they consider themselves a playoff contender? Much more likely to come to terms on a contract.

I don't think they value Clowney the type of money he'll command (Aaron Donald/Khalil Mack money). The team has to make a choice whether to give him a big contract or JJ when that time comes (especially once DW4 gets re-upped). Looking down the line the team is going to back JJ over Clowney. Not an indictment on Clowney as a player just how the team values spending their allotted cap dollars. If they can hit the "reset button" with a 1st round pick and the rookie contract that is associated with that pick over giving Clowney 100 million+ I think the team will do that.

Posting on the devils page on this thread.....

at any rate that was a quick marriage with Peppers and the Brownies

If OBJ doesn’t go full little biatch like Antonio Brown the CLE could really be a serious contender in the AFC.

Yea if that deal goes down it should inform us bout JDs approximate market value.
TheKansas City Chiefshave agreed to trade edge rusherDee Fordto theSan Francisco 49ers, a source confirmed to ESPN's Josina Anderson.

The Niners are expected to give Ford a multiyear deal in the range of five years and $87.5 million, the source said.

San Francisco will send a 2020 second-round pick to Kansas City, a source confirmed. The deal can't become official until the new league year begins Wednesday.

There you go - Iv'e said all along didn't think JD would fetch (Fords is a 2020 pick not 2019), but a single second round pick and Ford doesn't have Clownes injury issues.

I’ll go ahead and break the news; Blake Bortles has been released. Idk what the future holds for him but NFL QB isn’t looking very likely. But hey, he’s tall and rich.

Kansas City Star calls for Chiefs to cut Tyreek Hill, if allegations are true
March 16, 2019, 8:51 AM EDT

The Chiefs moved swiftly in November to sever ties with running back Kareem Hunt, after a video debunked his claim to the team that he had no involvement in an altercation at a Cleveland hotel earlier that year. The Chiefs now have another situation with a star player, and the local newspaper has called for similar decisive action.

The Editorial Board of the Kansas City Star calls for the Chiefs to release Hill, if it’s proven that he broke his three-year-old son’s arm.

Whether it can be proven that Hill broke his child’s arm is a different issue. His name isn’t listed on the incident report relating to the injury, but the incident occurred at his address. Crystal Espinal, his fiancee, is named in the report; according to the Star, she is currently pregnant with twins.

Obvious questions become whether she or someone else other than Hill inflicted the injury, if the boy’s arm was indeed broken. Then there’s the equally obvious question, given the financial stakes of a situation like this, as to whether she or someone else will try to take the fall for something Hill may have done.

Hunt’s case turned on video. Without evidence that clear in Hill’s case, it may be impossible to conclusively prove anything.

Even then, Hill’s history of domestic violence — largely overlooked as he became one of the best players in the league — will cloud not only this situation but also his career as it moves forward, absent conclusive proof that he is innocent. If nothing else, it could make the Chiefs wait for another year before making Hill the highest-paid receiver in the league.

A little more background on Hill's pathologic history:

KCTV 5 obtained another Overland Park police report from March 5 on a report of child abuse or neglect. That report was closed three days later when authorities declined to prosecute, according to KCTV 5’s report.

Hill, 25, is one of the Chiefs’ most prominent players. The team and the star receiver have been discussing a large contract extension that’s expected to make him among the highest-paid players at his position.

Hill has a history of domestic violence. He reportedly punched and choked Espinal, who was then eight weeks pregnant with their son, on Dec. 11, 2014. He was arrested and dismissed from the Oklahoma State football team. Hill pleaded guilty to domestic assault and battery by strangulation in August 2015. He received three years probation. The Chiefs selected Hill in the fifth round of the 2016 NFL Draft.

The conviction was dismissed in August 2018 and ordered to be expunged after he completed his probation requirements.LINK

Another Brown?

Well certainly indicates that Tyreek Hill is crappin in high cotton because anybody who knows Overland Park knows it to be the most exlusive area of all of KC metro and I'm talking River Oaks category exclusivity here.

A little more background on Hill's pathologic history:

I am interested in your opinion Doc. Given his history, combined with the recent story would it have bothered you had the Texans drafted him in the 5th round?

Take into consideration his prolific career, even though the KC Chiefs haven't won an AFC Championship game, he's made for a heck of an offensive football team.

I don't know I would say bother me as a player. But certainly as a person (especially the unforgivable 2014 incident with his 1st pregnant girlfriend) . He would have been a huge positive on the field for us. But this team would not have been able to deal with the continued off field antics..............which will have finally caught up with him, if the recent episode with a child less than a year following the completion of his probation is confirmed. I think I would "bother" me much less if the fists were directed to a 6' 200lb male.

In the end, it doesn't seem that Bell chose the correct route by foregoing last season.

The full details of the Le’Veon Bell contract
March 17, 2019, 12:56 PM EDT

Various summaries of the new contract signed this week by Jets running back Le'Veon Bell have emerged since Bell put pen to paper. PFT has obtained a copy of the raw document, which means that (like it or not) you’re now getting a full and complete explanation of all of the details of the deal.

This is a full and complete explanation of the entire terms from the raw document, checked, double-checked, and triple-checked.

Signing bonus: Bell gets $8 million right out of the gates, an amount to be paid in three installments. He’ll get $4 million within 15 days of March 31, 2019, $1 million within 15 days of April 15, 2019, and $3 million within 15 days of January 1, 2020.

Roster bonuses: Bell receives a $4 million 2019 roster bonus, with $3 million of it due within 15 days of April 15, 2019 and the remaining $1 million due within 15 days of October 15, 2019. The payment is fully guaranteed. He also receives a $4.5 million 2020 roster bonus, $2 million of which must be paid within 15 days of March 31, 2020 and the remaining $2.5 million of which must be paid within 15 days of October 15, 2020. The 2020 roster bonus becomes fully guaranteed on the fifth day after the contract is signed, which makes it as a practical matter fully guaranteed at signing.

Base salaries: The deal has so-called “Paragraph 5” salaries (because they’re listed in Paragraph 5 of the standard player contract) of $2 million for 2019, $8.5 million for 2020, $8 million for 2021, and $9.5 million for 2022.

Guaranteed base salaries: The 2019 base salary is fully guaranteed at signing, as is the 2020 base salary. Bell’s 2021 base salary is guaranteed for injury at signing; it becomes fully guaranteed on the fifth day of the 2021 league year.

Per-game roster bonuses: For each year of the deal, Bell gets $31,250 for every game that has him on the 46-man active roster. The maximum payment is $500,000 per year.

Training-camp bonuses: Bell receives $3 million in 2021 and $3 million in 2022 for showing up for and fully participating in training camp.

Incentives: In each year of the deal (2019 through 2022), Bell can earn $500,000 for 1,800 yards from scrimmage, another $500,000 for 2,000 yards from scrimmage, another $500,000 for 1,800 yards from scrimmage plus the Jets making the playoffs. The bonuses are cumulative, meaning that he can earn $1.5 million per year.

Escalators: Bell has a potential $550,000 salary escalator for 2020, 2021, and 2022 that can be earned in any of three ways: gaining 2,000 yards from scrimmage, being named the Associated Press offensive player of the year, or being named the Associated Press regular-season MVP. These are not cumulative; Bell can boost his salary by only $550,000 for each of the final three years of his contract, based on his performance in 2019, 2020, and 2021.

The full guarantee at signing, contrary and/or confirming any and all other reports on the subject, consists of the $8 million signing bonus, the $2 million 2019 base salary, the $8.5 million 2020 base salary, the $4 million 2019 roster bonus, and the $4.5 million 2020 roster bonus. If my math is correct (and it often isn’t), that’s $27 million fully guaranteed at signing.

The total guarantee (full guarantee plus injury guarantee) is $35 million.

The cash flow (minus the per-game roster bonuses) is $14 million through 2019, $27 million through 2020, $38 million through 2021, and $50.5 million through 2022. With the per-game roster bonuses, it’s $14.5 million through 2019, $28 million through 2020, $39.5 million through 2021, and $52.5 million through 2022.

The incentives and escalators add a maximum additional payment of $7.65 million, giving the deal a max value of $58.65 million over four years.

it feels like that at first...
Then I think of it as the NFL 'settling out of court'. If Reid and Kaepernick didn't have something of substance (how much can be debated) why would the NFL agree to buy him off??
I read somewhere the settlement cost each team $684,000 per team. A small price to pay to get Kaep to go away forever. Signing Reid to a dealThat plus the fact that Elway said he tried to sign Kaep and he declined.

I wonder how much $$$$ Kaep got vs Reid or if they just split the settlement after the lawyers got their cut. If they split the $$$$ Reid came out the real winner in this deal.

Him that figure seems low, I've read a couple reports that the settlement was around the $60-80 million range and that would put it at what $22 mil?

I read it was between 22-30 mil.

But even if it was 60 mil that's less than 2 mil per team and I could see why the owners would settle.

NFL Paid Under $10 Million to Settle Colin Kaepernick Grievance

The league resolved collusion grievances with the former 49ers quarterback and Eric Reid, who led player protests during the national anthem, last month

The NFL Live talking heads talked about this today. They mentioned the non-disclosure agreement that govern both sides in this case. Even the article starts out by admitting neither side (NFL nor Reid Kaepernick) officially broke the silence....
An NFL spokesman declined to comment. An attorney for Messrs. Kaepernick and Reid said they are respecting the deal’s confidentiality agreement.
No where in the article is this $10M figure attributed to anyone, either side, by name.

I don't believe it.
Smells like click-bait to me.

I know. I subscribe to the hardcopy version.

However, my statement:

"No where in the article is this $10M figure attributed to anyone, either side, by name."

....still stands.

Doc, you know I get suspicious of statement/data that can't be traced back to a verifiable source. I wanna know who leaked that $10M number.

I always feel much better about "facts" when specific legitimate sources are named. Along your line of thinking, you might enjoy this SI MMQB article:

Good article.
Thanks! :fostering:
Touched on all the reasons I was suspicious that either side blabbed.
too many negative ramifications ...serious ones for the legal suits.
and he also points out why the 10mil number - even if it's made up - actually makes sense.

Jameis Winston plans to play at 250 pounds this year
Posted by Josh Alper on March 24, 2019, 9:53 AM EDT

The Buccaneers offense is going to have a different look with head coach Bruce Arians pulling the levers this season and the guy putting the plays into motion is going to have a different look as well.

Quarterback Jameis Winston was at Arians’ golf tournament on Saturday and revealed that he’s going to be a bigger presence on the field than he has in past years. Winston has been listed at 231 pounds, but said he is working to build up muscle mass ahead of the season.

“I’m getting it. I’m going to play bigger this year,” Winston said, via the Tampa Bay Times. “I’m about 250. Yeah. A solid 250. It’s just about hydration and being at the peak body, too.”

This is shaping up as a pivotal season for Winston as he is unsigned beyond 2019 and his recent play has done little to make anyone rush to give him a long-term deal. We’ll have to wait to see if going bigger leads to better things.

https://profootballtalk.nbcsports.c...-little-defensive-about-bobby-hart-criticism/

If only BO"Gaine was this honest...

“For those who say you shouldn’t have signed Bobby Hart, who is going to play right tackle?” Blackburn said. “Who? Oh, maybe you’ll draft one in the third round and he’ll come on. Really? You’re going to bet your season on that? We may still draft somebody. We haven’t had the draft yet. But you just can’t criticize. In our business you have to solve the problem. If you’re not going to play him, tell me who? Trent Brown at 17 million? Really? A seventh-round draft pick? Let go essentially by his team. Really? We can’t go to WalMart and buy off the shelf. A high quality starting right tackle? That doesn’t exist [in free agency].

“You have to deal in the universe of options you have. We ended up signing eight guys. That’s probably above average. Were they perfect? You’re not going to get perfect. . . . There aren’t perfect options out there. We asked Willie Anderson if he could go to a time machine and come back at age 25. We’d love to sign him, but you have to deal in your universe of options. I think the data would say we signed more guys than most in line with the cap that we talked about. If there are surprises out there we’ll try to be flexible and aggressive, but normally there are no surprises out there.”
