Jaguars | Garrard to start

Chris Mortensen, of ESPN, reports Jacksonville Jaguars QB David Garrard will start for the team.

Oh, I think this is smart move for J-Ville. I wonder who makes the move for Byron?

I can't see anyone giving the Jags much of anything. Leftwich has a big cartoon wind up and he can't get the ball out of his hands quickly enough to be a top NFL QB...Casserly is out of the league but I hear he wants to give the Jags a 2nd and a 3rd.

Garrard gives them a better chance to win, but it's sad to see this happen to Gary Coleman. First there's the run in with a fan while working as a security guard at the mall, then he was having to do ads for one of those cash advance places, and now he's lost his job as the QB for the Jags. Poor little fella.

Well, he's still got his hit reality show, "The Surreal Life 2".

So is this the beginning of the end of the Jags?

Chaos at the QB position and likely further unhappiness of the fan base.

Coach who can't get his team geeked for teams they think are beneath them.

Spoiled fans.

Small market without many corporate sponsors.

Fixing to be blacked out game one against the Titans.

They don't have much of a margin to stay in Jacksonville.

I think this pretty much seals a Week 1 black-out in J-Ville. :shades:

I think that Garrard has started 15 of the last 22 games if I heard coach Del Rio right in his presser, so not starting Leftwich isn't too unusual lately. I don't think it hurts the Jags much because whenever we played the Jags Leftwich was about the only QB I ever saw play that I thought Carr was better than. I think I counted 3 times when Del Rio mentioned the fact that Garrard has a quick release.

They found out that Couch was using steroids. So now they've dropped Leftwich, named Garrard their new starter, and they'll bring Couch back because he's "their kind o' people."

:user:

I see the Falcons in Lefty's future.

I kind of understand the trade (last year of his contract and he hasn't done much) but he hasn't been terrible. Gerrard imploded in Nashville last year and while fun to watch from our standpoint, I don't see how Del Rio and the Jag's brass can place the whole season in his hands. I don't think this will work out long-term and I see them going QB early in April.

Yeah, but there's ways to do things and then there's ways to do things. Del Rio was already being criticized before this. It has to be weird locker room wise and also in the city.

People talk about the game being a business, but it is hard making relationships with people, the sort of stuff you need to make yourself a team, and then with little warning just cut you.

I'm a big believe in treating people with dignity and respect when you send someone out the door, the best you can without hurting yourself--because it sends a bad message to the team otherwise--that you can't trust what comes out of management's mouth.

Well and it is weird as hell. Why name Leftwich as the starter right after the season, have him get most of the reps against the ones, and then cut him now?????

We don't know if Del Rio has tried to clean up Leftwich's delivery all off-season...perhaps he tried as hard as he could and got fed up with it holding back their offense. All I know as a casual observer is that I didn't think Leftwich was a very good NFL QB with that long wind up.....otherwise, I agree with the points you make in this thread 100%

come on vinny, last season watching Byron throw was entertainment, it took my eyes off of our defensive and what they were doing :whip:

I am going to miss it :heh:

I'm thinking that Del Rio knew exactly what he had with Leftwich. I was never impressed with Leftwich, and to be fair, not terribly impressed with Garrard.

I'm trying to think of a previous situation like this. Of someone who was the #2, became the #1 due to injury, then prior to the season, was told that the injured guy is going to be the #1 again, the #2 doesn't play #1 snaps in the preseason, and then dumping the injured guy too late for him to catch on some place else. It sounds like a total cluster.

wow, i really thought that garrard should start but i thouht i knew it would never happen, i thought for sure byron would start , wow this is a big surprise

Sorta sounds like the whole Joe Montana/Steve Young thing to me.

JDR takes jab at Byron is the thread title..

Dude, that poster with the nickname for Byron gets in my all-time HOF

some Jags fan said:
I hate to say I told you so, but I told you so. Leftwich is a cancer and the Jags are better off without Fattymcbutterpants at this time.

I don't know why but it works! It really works! I know he didn't come up with it but he applied it to Leftwich and it's perfect. Pity Leftwich is just about done and he won't be around to use it on for much longer.

this Q&A was interesting.. one could substitute Texans and Carr in there

Join jaguars.com senior editor Vic Ketchman as he tackles the fans' tough questions.

Eric from Jacksonville: Did you see it coming, Vic?
Vic: Yeah, I saw it coming. I gave hint after hint after hint in “Ask Vic” this week. Go back and read them; you might get a laugh. At one point I went too far because I got a few questions asking me if I was hinting at something. Let’s start with the OTA’s. They were not good until the last few. I distinctly remember a Tuesday practice late in OTA’s that was especially horrible. The next day, Jack Del Rio volunteered interest in Daunte Culpepper. That was the first tip. OTA’s ended with a couple of good practices, however, and then training camp started with some real optimism, but in the second full week of camp, David Garrard made his move. I wrote about it and I was ridiculed for my views. I tried to tell everyone that I wasn’t playing talent evaluator, just reporter, but I was rebuffed as an old hack the game had passed by. All of that’s correct, of course, but even an old hack could see that Garrard was on fire. Then the preseason games began and Garrard continued to pour it on. In the pregame radio show in Green Bay, I said Byron and the offense were facing a big game. I knew the situation had reached a crossroads. How big was that game? Well, it cost Byron his starting job and a big salary.

Adam from Jacksonville: After just hearing the news of David Garrard being named the starter, what will the Jaguars expect to get with a possible trade or release of Byron Leftwich?
Vic: I can’t imagine a team being willing to assume Byron’s $5 million salary in a trade, so they’d have to do a new deal before they trade for him. Here’s the big question: How eager do you think Leftwich will be to accommodate the Jaguars by doing a new deal before the Saturday six p.m. deadline? Don’t forget, once he’s released, he becomes an unrestricted free agent free to sign with any team.

Wes from Jacksonville: While I think it was unwise to put your stock in a quarterback that didn't play against a first team defense in the preseason, I’m glad the organization is making the right move and cutting Leftwich. At least it will end the quarterback controversy. At the very least, it might increase ticket sales. Do you agree?
Vic: I’m not sure what it’ll do for ticket sales. What I can tell you is that from a football standpoint, as I had said over and over, at the quarterback position you have to pick and stick. Flip-flopping won’t work. It was time to make a bold decision and the Jaguars did.

Matt from Marianna, AR: Wow! You were dead on about playing a highly paid player or getting rid of him. I hope Garrard can be consistent.
Vic: When you have a $5 million salary, you don’t go to the bench. You’re either the starter or you’re playing for someone else. That’s long been a fact of life in professional football. You have to be worth your salary.

Antwan from Jacksonville: Just got hit with the Leftwich blow. Should we expect an explanation of why up until today Leftwich was, without a doubt, the starting quarterback? Sounds like unstable decision-making to me.
Vic: As I had said previously, don’t expect the coach to express his doubts. He’s not going to waver in his public statements about his commitment to his quarterback. It’s the most fragile position in all of sports. When a coach begins talking about when he might bench a quarterback, he’s already benched him. Jack Del Rio began to have second thoughts, but he kept his thoughts to himself, for the obvious reason. I think fans need to be better readers. I think they need to learn how to read into what a coach says. I heard a sound bite from Jack Del Rio’s radio show from this past Tuesday and it was very clear to me that Del Rio was giving the fans a big hint at what was going to happen later in the week. Develop some savvy as a reader. Don’t look for what you want to know. Look for what you don’t want to know.

OT but thought this was a significant quote from the Jags board:

THE BEST NICKNAME IN FOOTBALL

The good news: The defense should be even better than last year, with the addition of first-round pick Reggie Nelson, affectionately known on Florida Gators message boards as "RFN"... as in "Reggie *********g Nelson"... as in "******! Did you just see that play by Reggie Nelson?" When your new safety is so jaw-dropping spectacular that nothing less than the "F-word" can articulate it, you have something special there. (As opposed, say, to Brady Quinn, drafted one pick later than Nelson and more likely to earn the nickname "*********g douchebag.")

The Jags are in for a really long season if they thing Garrard is the answer they are looking for. If they were planning on cutting Leftwich anyway, why not draft Quinn really late in the 1st round?

Dave Garrard is a decent backup, but the guy is a turnover machine. I see a lot more performances like he had last year vs the Titans at the end of the season.

Lefty update:

Falcons | Team not interested in Leftwich
Sat, 1 Sep 2007 07:46:23 -0700

Steve Wyche, of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, reports the Atlanta Falcons will not pursue Jacksonville Jaguars QB Byron Leftwich via trade or free agency, according to a team official

Why would the Jags announce that they would release, or trade him? Everyone will wait until he is released anyway.

If you want to make SURE you get him, then you trade for him. If he hits the street, then he has the choice about where he goes... and if you've got a situation he might not like, then he probably won't go to you.

Or the Volek release last year with the Titans.

AFC South = Weird Stuff with QB's.

And then there is the Evil Overlord in Indy.

The McNair release was on the list of the all time classless ways of getting rid of your quarterback. At least the fanbase got Vince Young as a consolation prize in trade for their soul. Evil yet effective.

The Leftwich release was bungled in every way. It screws him because he has little time to find a starting job. It screws the organization because the locker room can't be happy with the timing and how it was handled.

Your QB situation needs to be clear, and they let that muddy up their entire preseason, and only watch Garrard against second stringers. (He started last year of course, showing both promise yet poor game management skills because he was inexperienced).

The Texans mangled the decision last year, a year with a fat QB class, though the reality was that if Carr wasn't kept, the Texans would have had to take VY--the natives would have been decidedly unkind to any other rookie quarterback. This year they handled it the best way. By cutting ties early on a contract that wasn't tradeable and getting the QB they wanted as soon as possible so that he could have an entire offseason to learn the offense and his teammates.

Of course, there is no QB problem in Indy, because the Peyton is evil and will never miss a down because of his pact with the devil. That is why they have the luxury of keeping Jim Sorgi on the payroll.

There's your AFC South QB wrapup. Have a lovely day. :texflag:
