Texans random thought of the day

I don't think DeMeco is going to fall into that "play it safe" tendency that Kubiak and O'Brien would do when they had a lead in the 2nd half.

He's got a middle linebacker mentality of keeping your boot on the opponent's neck until 0:00. That's badass.

This team is going to have the personality of a middle linebacker with an assassin at QB. :texflag:
Kubiak would drive me nuts how he could play up tempo, get a lead, take his foot off the accelerator and hand over the momentum. He never could figure that out.

The offense is getting a lot of deserved attention but we can't forget how well our defense has played.

When if ever is the last time the Texans have a shut-out in the first half of 2 games in a row. Sure there has been some luck involved (missed field goal etc.) but that still says a lot about this young defense.
The defense isn't that young.

Well that cant be right...thought they just said Kendrick Green out with torn meniscus???
That tweet was posted ~2.30 PM................the announcement of the MCL did not come out until an hour ago. The website has always been behind times. Those responsible for the Depth Chart do not routinely closely follow and communicate with the medical personel.

Furthermore, many times the length of conservative rehab vs trim vs repair cannot always be determined until MRI results return (usually Monday or Tuesday).........and sometimes what is found at surgery........and sometimes if the player wants to return to play quickly if trim (quick recovery) repair (long recovery) is an option to him.

Anyone watching fox just now?

Pre game guys going over the most impressive rookies...

They have 4 guys up on the board. Stroud, Bijan, Jalen Carter, Puka.

First three guys Vick, Edleman and some guy choose Bijan, Puka, Carter.

Last guy is Woodson and im thinking ok they each had a guy to pick from the graphic and talk about their game.

This mf Woodson picks Witherspoon from the Seahawks.

Stroud has started his career doing things that only a handful of guys have done in the history of the league. He's one of four guys up on the graphic and he doesnt get chosen as one of the most impressive rookies.

Dont really care what talking heads think but i just thought it was chuckle worthy when i saw it.

Slowick probably needs to open with the pass and then try not to use Dell as a RB.
I'm not saying Slowick called a perfect game. I questioned many of those outside runs, as well. But if you look at the 4thQ TD drive, he called 8 runs vs 3 passes. The runs were good for 29 yards, for a 3.6 ypc. Not great, but the Texans were able to run over 5 minutes of clock on that drive. And get the Falcons out of their 2 deep safety look. Stroud and Schultz were able to burn the lone safety for the TD.

So what I'm saying is that abandoning the run, even when not efficient, is a bad idea. The threat of the run slows the pass rush and helps dictate the defensive coverage. Of course, improving the efficiency of the run game should be a major priority. Having the starters on the O-Line return and get settled in should help in that regard.

On that last drive I loved what he was doing because I knew what was coming, but I kept asking myself why didn’t he do this all game. He kept getting cute by running outside when it wasn’t working and with Dell a couple of times. The inside runs didn’t bother me much.

Houston is tied for last on rush yards per carry at 3.

Why can't we run better? To me this is the #1 issue for the team.

All you have to do is look at the run blocking grades to understand why we are incapable of running the ball.

The question should be: why are our OLmen blocking so poorly? Is it lack of talent? Is it the scheme? Is it the coaching? Is it simply because of the injuries?

I haven’t gone back or taken a deeper look into the run game. I’ve just watched the games casually.

Im pretty sure the online needs work. They’ve got a bunch of backups and this scheme takes time to learn. There’s so many nuances to it. Angles, steps, hand placement, body positioning, who to block, how to work with the guy next to you…these guys are still learning and it probably won’t be a fine tuned machine until year two or three.

All that said, I’m not sure Pierce is the best fit at rb either. He doesn’t really show patience and has a tendency to run into contact instead of to daylight. Doesn’t mean it’s all his fault though.

I may have to rethink this. The Texans overall, 5 game, run blocking grade ranks smack in the middle at #16. But our rushing yards ranks us #26 and our yards per carry is dead last #32.

This needs explaining.

There's been speculation about Pierce's running style not being a fit for our ZBS. There may be something to this.

Now, the run blocking grade is subjective, but overall, may be better than I thought. So I'm forced to look elsewhere and RB is a logical place to look.

I'm curious about Singletary - and even the 3rd back - surely one of them should fit the ZBS? And if so, wouldn't we be using them and riding on the winning horse?

The Vikings seem to have used Boone effectively in 2019 and 2020. I think he's run the ball once this year. He's taken 40 snaps, 31 on passing plays.

I'd give him a chance and see what he can do.

With Tank Dell in concussion protocol, I doubt he will be available for the NO game on the weekend.
Fortunately, we have Nico, Woods and Metchie.
Schultz and Pierce may also get a couple more passes thrown their way too.

Well I would think play calling would have to play a major role in this and it doesnt help when you try the same damn play that nets NEGATIVE 3-5yds per attempt several times a game...especially when running between the tackles was working well enough to pick up 3+yds a carry.

It was drive killing and put the O behind the 8ball on down and distance...and it was done repeatedly against ATL and if FAILED everytime.

Cant put that on the back...that falls on the OC's shoulders.
