State of the O-line

DB ran a sub 5.00 40 with a really good 10 yd split. Howard is nowhere close to the athlete DB is. For that matter he's no where near the athlete Dillard is. Only a poster who can't read or is biased would say otherwise.

Actually Brown ran a 5.08 with a 1.76 10yd split, and Howard ran a 5.05 with a 1.81 10 yd split

Howard had the higher vertical (29.5 vs 27.5) while Brown had the better broad jump (8’9” vs 8’7”)

Brown did put up a better VJ and a slightly better broad jumps at his pro day but I couldn’t find info on Howard’s numbers. It’s unfair to compare pro day numbers to combine as they’re completely different situations

Brown did smoke Howard in the 5-10-5 and 3 cone, but if you’ve ever actually done these 2 drills there’s a lot of technique to them.

Long story short, it’s a bit of stretch to say Howard is no where near the athlete Brown is. Additionally there are a lot of studies that question the correlation with combine drills and NFL success. I think Howard has the necessary traits to be a successful NFL OL, and I think he can succeed at either G or T. He definitely needs to work on his technique. What Howard needs is good coaching to develop his technique, and sadly, as with most on the site, I have zero faith in Develin at this point. I truly hope he proves all of us wrong

Anyone see what John had to say?
I’ll try to remember some things, not now where I can look it back up. Said Webb hadn’t worked with the starting OL at all in camp. Said Howard has”intriguing” pop in pads and hands, but admitted to a case of nerves in his first game. Said Detroit’s DL will be a great test next week. Said Sharping made some plays. Can’t remember anyone else mentioned on OL. Otherwise he said Exford at S had a good night and camp so far. Said Crockett ran good and impressed RB coach Barrett with his pass pro...Sharping with a good block on his TD run....all I can remember for now. Edit...just saw where someone posted his stuff.

So if Duane Brown was a better athlete when coming out of college during Draft preparation than Tytus the difference appears to be only marginal.
But gotta hand it to SteelB for his accuracy in his portrayal of the Texans as an organization that's been too incompetent and/or miserly resulting in multiple missed opportunities to secure LT talent to protect it's franchise QB.

I've got to watch the game again.

I went in hoping Matt Kalil would be a beacon of hope. The healthy, 25th best Tackle in the league. But was quickly deflated. I don't think it's going to work out.

@SharpFootball: When you play for the Texans you learn pretty quickly how to do nothing to protect your QB.

38 & 79 whiff while 3 linemen proudly block 1 DL as the QB runs for his life.

Blocking like this is why Deshaun Watson gets hit so hard he can’t fly to road games.

BB has a knack for instilling a HS/College mentality in the NFL where the team comes first. If players start to show a me first attitude, he sends them out the door, like the guy that got sent to the Cleveland Browns.

Plus, he knows how to use his players' best strengths.

Having said that, we need someone who comes from Parcell's tree. I believe he has a lot of coaches that either won SB's or at least been to them.
BB is from Parcell’s tree, so OB is also, by default.

So not trying to excuse anyone - that was some horrible blocking/execution/communication and probably what we all already know, horrible line coaching... but...

38 - Buddy Howell
79 - David Steinmetz
77 - Martinas Rankin
61 - Maurquice Shakir
68 - Malcolm Pridgeon

It wasn't exactly the A team out there - and Rankin picked his guy up and kept him out of the play - looked to be mostly Howell's fault since he didn't make a decision on who to pick up and caused 79 not to know who to pick up. All said and done, hit somebody, anybody.

This is an ME on the Running Back. He went to help chip on the DE but forgot that his #1 responsibility on that play was to take the blitzing DB. The RT shouldn’t have flashed at the blitzer either. His guy is his guy

Renkin needs to be moved to Right Guard and let him get all the snaps he can before game one so Scharping can play right tackle

You're assuming that Howard is the left tackle. I have repeatedly said that Davenport will be our left tackle for 2019. I see Howard at left guard Fulton at Center. The goal is to put the best player at position.

Do we have best players?

You know, off the top of my head, I can't recall any reports on Davenport, coming out of TC. And wasn't Roderick Johnson the first player to replace Kalil, at the end of the first quarter. I wonder what's with that?

Davenport, Martin and rankin are almost ghosts

Well K-Dog and I obviously disagree. If Davenport was in trouble wouldn't we hear O'Brien bitching and moaning about him as he did about Foreman? Rankin played a lot if a ghost as did most other nonstarters. Team wanted look at Kalil and got what most of us expected. Howard 1.23 look avg at LT needing work so not our starter. He
still has LG locked in. O'Brien knows what he had in Big D and is winnowing wheat from chaff. I still think Twill signs with Houston. If Rankin and D are going to be cut, should be sooner rather than later.

I agree Davenport should be LT. But is he getting any reps there?

Tweet from @Cover_1_: Not sure Nsekhe is going to relinquish that RT spot. That and more https://www.cover1.net/buffalo-bills-indianapolis-colts-player-reviews-ty-nsekhe/ https://t.co/mG0nuys4Ss

He is a guy I wish they went for in the offseason.

He got a 2 year/$10 mil contract with buffalo after playing for redskins several years.

Seantrel got 1 year/$4.5mil
Kalil got 1 year/$7.5 mil

According to football analytics outlet Pro Football Focus, Nsekhe earned a grade of 67.8 as a fill-in tackle for the Redskins last season.

This is a guy who is cheap and not a pro bowler, but very competent at his position and is healthy.

This kinda of surprises me knowing you as I do. Howard is DB 2.0. IMO :cow:
Also keep in mind that Howard had no power 5 combine training and workout shorts that fit... he spent a lot of time in everything but the 40 trying to hold his pants up.

So now we are making excuses.

They had a chance to draft a guy who you could make none of these excuses for and passed. A guy who looked very good in his 1st game at LT.

Been saying this for 3 offseasons.

More terrible OL play in Sunday practice:

Tweet from @PatDStat: Left tackle struggling today. Not surprising. #Texans

Tweet from @PatDStat: Now Mercilus just put Kalil in a spin cycle. Would have been a sack. #Texans

Tweet from @PatDStat: Now Scarlett beats Kalil. Sack. #Texans

Tweet from @PatDStat: Horrid day for the LTs. Roderick Johnson gets beat by Charles Omenihu. Play blown dead. #Texans

Tweet from @PatDStat: Defense all over the offense. #Texans

You do know it's preseason correct? Dude is not going up against true starters in his first preseason game.

What’s the deal on Leonard. He played at least a half and I dont recall him getting beat at RT or LT. Played a quarter at each position. Obviously the Texans wanted a good look at him. He’s going to be my TC sleeper.

Yep, he knows what he has in Davenport. That's why he's not playing him at LT.

Some people are going to pissed when Davenport is starting day 1 at LT. Yall should know this coach by now.

Setting yourself up again to be ticked off all season long.
