Texans random thought of the day

Would you rather be in the Bengals position now or in the Texans position now?

Is there really a difference? You either win the Super Bowl or you don't.

The Bengals aren't going to the Super Bowl.

Their chances are better than ours, I'll give you that. But Come February.... whatever. The Bengals will be watching the Super Bowl, same as us, going by the premise you're arguing.... "Do you want to build a team that can't win a play off game?"

Obrien stated on radio that this week begins a whole new season. He's putting first half of season behind them and starting fresh new season.
Any predictions on 2nd half of season record???

I'm guessing 3 wins out of 8

7-1

Write it down.

Mohamed cleared waivers.
Apparently, the injury settlement is the thing which precludes us from picking him up when every other team can after the waivers cleared. We have to wait three weeks after the end of the settlement period which was three weeks from the date of the settlement or a total of six weeks. I believe we're still about three weeks away.

But I'm not sure he'll really be ready any time this season without an unacceptable risk of additional injury if I read your posts right.

It's 6 weeks after the negotiated settlement period.

From O'Brien's presser yesterday, on the challenge of defending Bengals TE Eifert, "He's a tough matchup all over the field. They do a great job. Hue Jackson does a good job of moving him around, kind of like some of the things that we've done in the past with our tight ends. It reminds me of that. He's a tough matchup." WTH? Uh, coach, the Bengals TE's actually catch passes!

(on if seeing what Eifert does makes them want to utilize their own TE's more) "Yeah, I mean you look at a guy like that, that's what you're trying to do with that F position, no doubt about it. We're continuing to work. Our guys are working hard. We're continuing to try and get them involved in the offense." Geezus, seriously??! It's week 10! If you haven't figured it out by now, you're not going to!

Random thought of the day, this guy hasn't got a clue how to get the TE's involved in the offense.

Offense can't figure out to incorporate the TE, defense can't stop a TE...Texans style!
Would be a good week to start/trade/steal Eifert for fantasy football purposes.

If it's in FA, whatever he wants.

Only 27yrs old, borderline probowler.....

Stafford has 2 years left on his contract. No way there is no trade interest in him. My guess is multiple picks would have to be involved. Is 2 firsts too steep a price? I'd do it and look at it this way - would I be able to guarantee a player of at least Stafford's level with those two picks. Sometimes I think NFL teams overvalue draft picks, although I get the idea that if you're able to get a contributor in the draft, you get him on the cheap for at least 4 years.

No way I give two firsts for Stafford. Bringing Stafford on at 17M a year and forking over first round picks?

If Detroit wants two first rounders, then they will need to eat some of that $17m base of the 2016 contract. Then Houston could renegotiate beyond that for a 4-5 year contract to fit their structure.

That still sounds like a heavy investment for a guy who hasn't instilled much confidence anytime recently.

Thanks for the heads up, btw.

What do you mean Detroit would have to eat some of the base? If it's what I think, then I've never heard of it in the NFL - any examples?

Yeah, no way they're going to give up multiple high picks if the possibility of either having to franchise him or watch him walk is only a couple of years away.

I don't see this happening for the same reason Jay Cutler is still a Bear, and Andy Dalton just signed a big fat new contract. Getting rid of QB's who aren't Franchise/Elite (or whatever you want to call them) all sounds fine and dandy when until you realize the hard reality of having to replace them. Given the draft classes of the past few years, even with an overall top 5 or 10 pick, the odds of picking someone who will end up better than what you got are somewhat daunting. Then there's always the part where even if you hit, how long does it take them to reach and surpass their predecessor's level, and as a GM and/or coach, is that a period of time you're gonna be able to survive. That's why my guess is Phillip Rivers was never a realistic option for the Texans, and Matt Stafford probably won't be.

Random Texans thought of the day: How can a team build through the draft and be successful when that team drafts as bad as the Texans do?m

To do this you ask Detroit to restructure the deal to convert a portion of his 2016 base salary into a signing bonus; prior to the trade. Essentially you are asking Detroit to take on additional dead money, in exchange for higher draft picks plus getting a lower first year salary for the player.

I think it happened this year in a trade, can't remember the player, I'll try to dig it up. I recall talking to another cap guy about it.

*Update*
It happened in 2013 with Eugene Monroe when he was traded to the Ravens.
A team must have enough salary cap room to absorb a player's current salary in order to make a trade. Once the player is acquired, the new team can renegotiate or restructure his contract to decrease his cap number and/or salary.

Teams aren't allowed to include cash or cap room in trades under NFL rules. The way around it, which was done when the
Jacksonville Jaguars traded Eugene Monroe to the Baltimore Ravens in 2013, is for the team and player to restructure the contract before the trade by converting salary into signing bonus. It operates essentially the same way as including cash or cap room because the acquiring team's cap hit for the player in the current league year is reduced. Eating salary in this manner could be a way for the Vikings to increase the compensation received for Peterson.

Article from Joel Corry explaining it back in April when he was discussing a trade possibility of Peterson.

**Another update**
Finally remembered which deal I was thinking of this year. When Pitt traded for Josh Scobee, Jacksonville converted some of his base to bonus to cover the trade. And Arizona did the same when they trade Levi Brown to Pitt two years ago.

I agree, but the kicker here is Detroit will be adding a new GM. At this pace they very well could end up with the #1 draft pick as well. The new GM may want his own QB and churn the roster.

Maybe we can get both Stafford and Calvin Johnson.

Just want to high five the members here. I don't wander NFL forums often, but every once in a while I go exploring and they all read like call in radio shows - drunk regulars (my bad) who haven't the foggiest idea which one is X and O. I try my best (and fail) to respect the fact that everyone is entitled to an opinion, but holy damn are average fans stupid. I'm sure many have that opinion of me, but on the whole I think it's fair to assume that this is a quite educated and experienced group of fans who are able to carry a higher level of discourse (usually). Participation is down and tempers are up with our current state of affairs, but even so - I'm glad to be part of this site, because the alternative is mind numbing.

You are soo correct Scooter.

The level of intelligence of the callers and some of the talk show hosts has dropped significantly over the past 10+ years. I do not listen to sports talk on the radio anymore as I really hate stupid people. Several years ago, Charlie Padillo (sp?) was talking about how good the Astros were and their strengths and the very next day was ragging on the Astros and how bad they were.

Other than the occasional troll we have a fantastic bunch of posters here who know their football. I don't agree with their opinions all the time, but you can get more info and news here about the Texans than anywhere else.

That's why I listen to channel 88 on SiriusXM. You get some very good info there. It's also allowed me to be more objective in my views of the Texans.

I enjoy Jim Miller & Pat Kirwin on my drive home. Especially in the offseason when Pat puts his GM hat on.

Some sites I've visited don't even talk football outside of game day.

One thing I love about this place though... 24/7 365 days a year, you can get your football on.

Super Bowl 50:
Patriots vs Arizona
Patriots win by 3 points

Another wasted year of Watts career....I glad we have him but

Facing the Bengals after the bye week and the Bengals get extra time, having played on Thursday night. Playing the Jets coming off of their bye week and the Texans get a short week, having played on Monday night. Playing the Saints, coming off of their bye week, with a change at DC that give them an emotional lift and gives the Texans little in the way of being able to game plan. WTF NFL schedule makers??

I was just thinking the same thing and personally I love it. If the Texans are able to come out of this gauntlet with wins then maybe, just maybe, we have a coach after all.

Overcoming adversity is what the rest of the league has to deal with after the NFL takes care of it's stars.

Put me down as cynical, but I suspect the Packers next win will be assisted by officials.

BTW Has anybody heard whether Hoyer's concussion protocol was instigated by the booth or by our guys? If by the booth and the protocol is found to have been unnecessary, could it portend a new way of influencing a game?

You've probably heard by now but, O'Brien said Hoyer told them after he came off the field that he was having problems remembering the play calls.

A happy thought going into Sunday...........if Fitzy plays.......

Ryan Fitzpatrick
is 4-for-26 on passes traveling at least 25 yards in the air, worst completion percentage in the NFL (15.4%)
