HOUSTON --
Ryan Mallett's day wasn't perfect by any means, but what the
Houston Texans got out of him in their season opener was one of the better performances by quarterbacks so far in Week 1.
Mallett's 85.9 Total QBR for those six minutes and 10 second he played ranked seventh this week, behind Tennessee's Marcus Mariota, Green Bay's Aaron Rodgers, New England's Tom Brady, Cincinnati's Andy Dalton, Cleveland's Josh McCown (who didn't play much due to a concussion early) and Buffalo's Tyrod Taylor.
It was a small sample size, but that was better than starter Brian Hoyer's Total QBR for any individual quarter. Hoyer had Total QBRs of 42.2 in the first quarter, 0.7 in the second, 32.1 in the third and 0.0 for his one fourth-quarter drive during which he attempted two passes, both incomplete, and was hit with an intentional grounding penalty.
The Total QBR stat is on a scale from zero to 100 and accounts for the situations in which the quarterback accrued his stats.
The same held true by the more traditional measure of passer rating. Mallett's 110.4 passer rating ranked ninth in the NFL so far this week, while Hoyer's was 78.3 in the first quarter, 68.8 in the second, 84.7 in the third and 39.6 in the fourth.
Hoyer had a Total QBR of 12.3, the second lowest among quarterbacks who started or saw significant playing time. Only rookie Jameis Winston was worse.
Hoyer's own analysis might have said it best.
"It couldn’t have gone any worse, you know what I mean," Hoyer said. "Obviously, I feel terrible. I feel like I let this whole entire organization down. It just went from bad to worse. I really just couldn’t fight back."
