Brian hoyer to sign with Texans

I DO NOT like this, why are we stacking up on below average QB's!?
uh..because there are NO above avg QBs? I did hear on radio just before 9 pm that he and his wife had both football and non football questions about Houston. I think that is a positive of him signing.

Looks like an ugly horse's head photo shopped on bull dog's body.

It's a bull terrier like Pappy Boyington had as a squadron mascot.

Trivia - Boyington and the Black Sheep were the first people to be shown drinking in Life Magazine when they were photographed celebrating his return from being a POW.

Like General George S. Patton's dog, too. Willie.

Making a jersey swap for one of my favorite players... Maybe ever. #HoyerTheDestroyer

I like #HoyerTheDestroyer better than #Fitzmagic... but does he have a song?

He does look familiar

hope these contract estimates are wrong. why would we pay our backup twice as much as our starter?

I'm not going to believe that high number ($6M/yr) until it is official. However, if that is close to the real amount, the possibility exists that the starter is getting paid more...

McClain being presumptive.

Brian and Lauren Hoyer are visiting Texans today and looking around Houston. Once he signs he'll compete with Mallett for starting job.

Please don't let this happen. I can't believe we'd be chasing this guy when we have Fitz under contract. The fact that the previous sentence makes sense should spell out why that's the case.

I will never understand the Hoyer infatuation we have. I was hoping it was a ploy to get Mallett's price down but now I'm scared this guy is going to come in and eat a bunch of our money while sitting behind Mallet or (even worse) sucking worse than Mallett or Fitz ever could have.

For me it's mostly about the price. If cheap enough, I'm willing to take a chance on a backup with more potential. Completely subjective, but hey... I'm allowed ;)

I'm not nearly as pessimistic about Hoyer as so many people here are. He had a pretty good 2013 until he got hurt. Then he had to deal with JF drama while still playing decent football in the first part of the season last year.

I checked out the Patriots board on the subject, and they have good things to say about him.

So, at the very least, I'm glad no one is getting a starting job promised; it will be a competition; OB knows all three of these players better than we do (incl Fitz), and whoever comes out of the camp as the starter, I'll be fine with seeing what he has.

They cleared all that cap space for a reason...maybe it was for Hoyer.

:)

Oh God.

Do we HAVE to take a big **** in the CLASS department when discussing a new player?

Yeah, I know. "It's what we do."

Brian Hoyer is at the #Texans facility to take team physical.

Remember when Gruden started collecting QB's that one time down in Tampa Bay?

Yeah, that's what this is starting to feel like.

Hoyer wanted to be at place where he had a legit starting chance. I think he has that here at least to compete for the job. He knows what Mallet has as well being on the same team, so he might feel confident that he can out play him. The same goes for Mallet, and Mallet already had a jump on him after being here for a season and getting some playing time. They both probably feel like this is one of their better chances to start.

From OB's perspective, we now have two options to go into camp to compete for the job. Both are guys he has coached before and is familiar with. If Mallet wins the job and stinks it up, Hoyer is a nice 2nd option in my opinion and in OB's obviously. Maybe then, Hoyer gets hot for a while. It is at least possible. Or if Mallet gets hurt, we still have a competent back up who can come in and make the season interesting still.

With OB's options currently, I think this was one of the best scenarios we could have ended up with. He is probably hoping that Mallet can turn into a big time QB, and if not he and Hoyer should be good enough to keep the team competitive while the search for franchise QB continues into next year.

The more I think about this, the more sense it makes.
O'Brien coached in NE from 2007 through 2011. Hoyer was there from 2008 - 2011. Mallett was only there one year that O'Brien was there, 2011.
So actually, from the "familiarity point of view, Hoyer may have a leg up on Mallett; having been with O'Brien 3 years to Mallett's one.

Going to be interesting to watch.

If not for the Eagles, the Texans would be the clear winner for worst off-season so far.

Except for not getting a #1 receiver, if we manage to get rid of fitz, I think it has actually been a pretty good free agency....., but let's not forget that #1 receiver, oh and a starting center

Actually, Mallett's now been with O'Brien for 2 years. It's also probably worth noting that he's been with George Godsey for 4 years - his entire NFL career.

In what way are we better than we were last season?

Kareem and Newton are locked up long term.
We have better cap flexibility.
Fitz isn't your starting quarterback.
Likely picked up two extra draft picks.

Those are all very valuable (well, the first three anyway), and Wilfork would be a nice upgrade if that happens, though then you lose some of that cap flexibility.

With Mallett, Fitz. and Savage?

Mallett's 2nd season with team
Hoyer
Savage's 2nd season.

Last year, we started the season with zero quarterbacks who have been in the system. This year, all three QBs have at least one year in the system... And two of them have had 4 years in system.

you can't count Hoyer as he's not on the team yet. Mallett is a complete unknown coming off injury, Savage is not developed enough yet to even be considered a backup

Compared to last year?... Even if we have Fitz and not Hoyer, Fitz now has.a year in the system. You guys are free not to like the situation at QB, but it is definitely a better situation than last year.

3 guys who all know the system vs. zero ... That isnt hope, that is reality.

That is an intangible that may or may not ever matter, although I rather have it than not. Experience in the system alone does not indicate better in of itself.

The reality is that the three guys combine have never had as good a season as an average season of Ryan Fitzpatrick.

You're entitled to your opinion, I just think it's as big of an unknown as it was last year

Wait, Mallett didn't know the system coming in? Please, you can't count time in NE for this year and not last.

We're down 5 starters (2 cuts and 3 free agents). That's an objective fact.

Uncertainty and flexibility don't line up on Sunday. And frankly having a better parachute (backup QB) is really arguing about how exciting the ride down from the plane crash is. It means nothing to the starting lineup.

It may be as big of an unknown as last year but last year at around this time, I was pinning my hopes on OB and Smith drafting a QB in the 2nd or 3rd round and getting them ready to be an NFL starter by game 1. I little hope of a non-losing record. Especially with Fitzpatrick starting. I was hoping Fitzy was just signed as a mentor and possible starter in the first few games.

This year at this point, I'm pinning my hopes on Mallett being consistently at least as good as he was in the Brown's game if not better. Worst case is Hoyer and there's a possibility that Savage could improve.

So, this year at this point, I've at least got hopes about someone I've actually seen play in a Texan's jersey in the offense.

I'll consider that an improvement over not having even seen the offense.
