2011 Houston Cougars Thread

This was the first full uh game I watched this year. The defense was awful. Some of those guys over there are terrible especially on the d line. They look like they don't belong on a good highschool team let alone a div 1 college team.

I've had little league players with more aggressiveness and thump.

I don't get the sumlin hype. Well, I think he is a decent coach but I don't think he is the second coming. Great coaches don't have their teams outclassed like that by southern miss. Their talent wasn't all that. The coogs just were not into that game mentally. They weren't locked in. If that is because of the rumors regarding sumlin, shame on him.

If I'm the aggies no way am I bringing in sumlin to be my head coach though. He won't last long in the sec.

The problem for UH is attracting recruits, especially the 4 and 5 star ones. Most of the Cougars were not even ranked nationally or are 2 star players that few schools were interested, so considering the talent they had, I think they have exceeded expectations.

UH is like those MAC schools except better IMO.

Gotta love those baseless rumors.

Yep, Sumlin does not seem to be the type of guy who would do something like others have mentioned. He came into my class and seemed like a genuine man, a man of principle.

I'll make my judgment once the truth is out but until then...

Guess who else isn't getting a slew of 4 and 5 star recruits. . .

The teams that uh regularly plays against.

Their best win was probably ucla which finished with a losing record.

The cougars had a good season, but no way do I believe they were the sixth best team in the country. They came up short in the biggest game of the year against an opponent that is far from a juggernaut. And it's not like it was really a close game. They got embarrassed at home.

It was a pretty pathetic showing and that is not a slight to anyone. That is just an observation.

I also disagree that they exceeded expectations. They had a good year, but they came up short of their goal and they came up short of what most expected. Not sure how that's exceeding expectations.

Wild speculation I know but this week has felt weird from the moment those rumors started.
It was a distraction that needed to be defused by the head coach. It's obvious that he couldn't do that.

There are rumors floating out there that Sumlin told the team before the game or put in his resignation and the team found out at halftime depending on whose story you want to believe.
That didn't even have to occur. Every player on the team had heard the rumors. Unless Sumlin came in and told them he was staying (which would be a lie), the players knew he was out. This team looked nothing like the squad that dismantled Tulsa in Tulsa. Totally deflated.

I don't blame Sumlin. That's how the "game" is played. UH could never offer the $$$ he'll get because they don't have access to the Permanent fund. They can't build a facility like Kyle Field and they can't get an offer to join the SEC. Like gwallaia said earlier, that's why NFL will always be #1 for me. I mainly watch college football to look at the potential prospects.

the PUF has nothing to directly do with athletics, specifically the coaches salaries or building stadiums.

I will probably be there too. I am pissed about Sumlin's shenanigans but I am going to go to the game to support the team.

Everyone knew it was coming just a matter of formality. People keep talking like it's a lateral move for UH & the new big east will just be the new conference USA b/c there's a possibility that the big east will lose their AQ status. but when u think about it, what conference (that would have to be better than what the new big east will comprise of) could they give the AQ bid to that doesn't already have one? Short of the corrupt powers that be start giving multiple AQ bids to the power conferences I just don't see any way the big east loses theirs which all things being equal, makes it a great move for UH........As long Boise State, Louisville & Cincy don't back out.

I think Sumlin should've stayed on with the team through the bowl game. It's not like he is going to coach the Aggies in their bowl game and he could have taken the job after the bowl game.

I think schools shouldn't be allowed to talk to coaches until after their seasons are over. They should face NCAA sanctions and loss of scholarships if they do. They would end this crap and these schools doing this **** and causing distractions. I will go to my grave believing Sumlin was being wooed by A$M and not getting us prepared for the championship game. So Miss was not 21 points better than us and I will never think otherwise.

Schools are allowed to talk to other coaches before the season is over that is just simply rediculous IMHO.

Why? so his head could be in Aggieland just as it was for the CUSA championship game? I don't want a lame duck HC at the bowl. There's no honor in his actions, so good riddance.

Even the classiest coaches do this, for example, Brady Hoke left Ball State for San Diego State and didn't even coach in the MAC Championship game. I guess if you gotta go, you gotta go but...

to leave your players after all that they've been through just like that, that ain't right IMO. As the poster mentioned, coach's should not be allowed to interview for positions until after the season officially wraps up.

That's just not possible in today's cutthroat recruiting. As soon as schools fire a coach, other schools are contacting recruits using it to try to sway them away from that school.

Just another reason schools shouldn't fire coaches until the season is over - bowl game included. IMO - It's a classless move to fire someone mid season. How do they think that will help the team? The kids sure aren't going to play harder.

I'm sure that Sumlin knew he was going to take the Aggie job before the C-USA game, Sumlin was then a lame duck coach.

Take it for what it's worth, but I heard from a fairly reliable source that a bunch of the UH players were staying at the team hotel the night before the Conference Championship getting hammered. Perhaps something like that contributed to them getting their asses handed to them the way they did. Tells me these guys thought they just had to show up and would win the game.

As I'm sure you guys know Houston took the 'interim' off of Tony Levine's job description today.

Thoughts? I don't know a whole lot of scoop on the guy and was wondering what you all think.

Rhoades could've done a much better job of hiring. Dickey/Levine< Gillespe/Applewhite for instance.

The Ncaa would have to move back the signing period. That's what driving the early firings.

From all that I have hard Levine could be a good hire. He will keep the same systems in place his quote was if ain't broke don't fix it.

I have also heard that he was the brains of Sumlins operations. He orginized every thing for our former coach so this could be a stroke of luck the way this has worked out.

I do feel bad for Jason Phillips he has been a part of 3 regimes here and hasn't gotten a shot at the head coachs position yet.

So you have to have ESPNU to watch this bowl game yet I get to see the fuqng Beef O Fairy bowl......thx ESPN for the old ass bang this morning!

My dad passed away 12/6. He's a '64 UH grad. I can't tell you how difficult it is to watch a Houston game without him.

Congrats to the Coogs! 13-1 is a great year for any team! I'm happy to see them win, but I'm more happy to see Penn State lose. Thanks for kicking their asses! :D

watch online at www.espn3.com or if you have a xbox, through the ESPN app.
Thx for the advice, and I have the app on my XBOX but even though I have Time Warner, it is a community account for my complex so ESPN3 nor the XBOX app will "recognize" me as a member of TWC therefore I don't get the game.

Just irritated me that it was not just on a reg channel. IMO, they should relegate their BS to ESPN 3 like poker and Nascar.

Well you could say this one was for your dad. I hope you remember all the fun you had watching UH games with your dad and maybe that will help in the future.

I was at this game and we should have beat Penn State much worse than 30-14. Two dropped pick sixes and one sure TD pass that was barely out of reach to Justin Johnson erased 21 points and added 7 to the Penn State total.

Coogs completely dominated this game on both sides of the ball.

In a related story, we stayed at the Dallas Omni where the team was staying and I was on the elevator with Case Keenum, Cotton Turner and David Piland the night before the game. I could tell then he had his game face on.

Article from State College newspaper. I chuckled at the quip below.

"A Penn State defense that had, for the most part, held in check Alabama’s AJ McCarron and a slew of less-than-dynamic Big Ten passers (OK, Wisconsin’s Russell Wilson had some serious game) looked like teenage drivers that had cruised around the suburbs with ease but looked utterly lost when they had to merge onto the freeway, where the Cougars pulled up alongside them, nodded politely and left them in a cloud of exhaust."

Which round do you guys think Keenum will go in?

I'm gonna go with 2nd. I think some team that passes on QBs in the 1st will take Keenum in the 2nd to fill a need. At this point, I think Ryan Tannehill will go in the 1st just due to the position lacking talent and the trend of over-drafting QBs.

Do you see any team being better than another for him?
