I favored defense a little when I made this. I also couldn't remember the difference between Mancz and Ferentz. Both the backup offensive tackles can play guard. I can see one of the LBs not making the team for depth elsewhere, but we seem to routinely have bad luck concerning the health of our LBs so I put a little more depth there. I wanted to put Jumal Rolle on but I couldn't remember if he got hurt. I can also see them going only 3 DE's as well since Covington can play there, at which point it becomes a tossup between Finua and Pagan, with Pagan likely winning that one.

RB Hilliard: Honestly I think he can drop to the PS with little risk, didn't show much outside of 1 or 2 plays in preseason and even if someone else scoops him up there will be a large amount of young HBs available for the PS anyway. Plus Charles James can go in for pitches! One of the HB spots would have to open up for Foster anyway when he returns, if we decided to carry all 4.

Rookie WRs: I really tried to get a 4th Veteran in there, but none have really made a point to me from a game standpoint that the young rooks havent had a better flash at. I considered Labhart but he'd have to take Strongs spot as Mumph has played better at WR than Strong and does a really good job on coverage teams plus can do returns if Worthy gets injured, but they aren't going to release a 3rd round pick they traded up for unless he plays bad enough to get cut, or has a disastrous attitude. So I consider Mumph and Strong locks to make the team (Mumph for backup slot and ST skills). So it came down if someone can replace Worthy's speed and return ability. I can see EZ replacing Worthy if they decided to go Mumph, Demps, and Polk at returner, I just think it's better to go with the best returner option with comparable speed. Demaris Johnson is considered for his speed/quickness at WR but Worthy has comparable skill there and is a better return man imo.
I spent alot of time thinking about this and every time it seemed like the best option was to go with those 3 Rooks to finish out the WR depth.

We're still kinda screwed at OL depth, Adams or Clark are likely to start at LG, and they can backup the guard spots. I can see X coming down on IR if they are really uncomfortable about his availability and want to get someone on that spot. I just really don't want to see Ben Jones back out there. Our season is over offensively if we lose Brooks (knock on wood) even moreso that D. Brown, there is at least competent options behind Brown, our guard depth is stretched extremely thin right now though.

There are 2 players that will likely make the team, but I personally think it would be better to just move on from to provide depth elsewhere are TE Ryan Griffin, and DT Louis Nix. Griffin just doesn't stand out to me not even from a blocking standpoint and Lee is a much better receiving option in my opinion. I can see Nix staying one more year, but he's got to be 3rd in the DT rotation by now. I can see the team replacing him via draft or free agency next season and wouldn't really bother me if they decided to cut the chord with him sooner rather than later.

Edit 1: Swapped Ankrah for Slade. Still waiting on the all the initial cuts just went with who I thought deserved a spot when filling in the backups

Don't forget they gotta save a spot on the 53 for Foster.
I thought they didn't have to if he's IRD2R. I think that's what they'll end up doing with him. When he comes back I expect another position to get trimmed likely LB.

As for backup center, I don't really like either options, and I keep getting them confused when I try to think of who has done what in preseason. They've both looked equally bad to me.

That's the big question is when he'll be ready. Aaron Wilson tweeted out a few days ago that barring a setback he could be back in late Sept. If that's true (or even within a couple of weeks of being true), they're unlikely to IRDTR him. So, since there's no way to know what they'll do until the do it (they can't IRDTR him until after final cuts), his status becomes a part of any final roster projection.

Man I'm wondering if Nate Washington is a lock to make it. I've seen him do very little. And we have some young guys with some juice. We'll see.

Also when guessing at the 53 I like to keep in mind only 45 are active on gameday.

That likely means all 6 WR's wouldn't be active on gameday. Strong would be the likely choice if you have worthy returning kicks, but worthy hasn't even done much or maybe I missed it.

Who are the gameday inactives on your roster?

Worthy and Lee have quickly become fan favorites over here but I just don't see how we can carry 6 WRs AND 4 TEs.

Unfortunately, I think the only way Worthy makes the team is over Washington. And I don't think that's likely. I think we're more likely to carry six CBs than six WRs. Worthy and James could be fighting for the final roster spot.

I think Lee goes to the PS unless they straight up decide to cut Griffin to make room. We could carry four TEs but we just don't use them enough to justify that.

I also think that OB seems to have a soft spot for Ferentz. Just a gut feeling but I think he'll make the cut.

IMO the team will carry 6, maybe 7, cornerbacks. I would add Darryl Morris to your CB group.

QB (3) - Brian Hoyer / Ryan Mallett / Tom Savage
RB (4) - Alfred Blue / Jonathan Grimes / Chris Polk / Kenny Hilliard
FB (1) - Jay Prosch
WR (5) - DeAndre Hopkins / Cecil Shorts / Nate Washington / Jaelen Strong / Keith Mumphery
TE (3) - Garrett Graham / C.J. Fiedorowicz / Ryan Griffin
OT (4) - Duane Brown / Derek Newton / Chris Clark / Jeff Adams
OG (3) - Brandon Brooks / Xavier Su'a-Filo / Cody White
C (2) - Ben Jones / James Ferentz

DE (4) - J.J. Watt / Jared Crick / Jeoffrey Pagan / Tevita Finau
NT (3) - Vince Wilfork / Chris Covington / Louis Nix
OLB (4) - Jadeveon Clowney / Whitney Mercilus / John Simon / Tony Washington
ILB (5) - Brian Cushing / Mike Mohamed / Jeff Tarpinian / Justin Tuggle / Benardrick McKinney
CB (5) - Johnathan Joseph / Kareem Jackson / Kevin Johnson / Darryl Morris / Charles James
S (4) - Rahim Moore / Andre Hal / Quintin Demps / Eddie Pleasant

K (1) - Randy Bullock
P (1) - Shane Lechler

EDIT: Practice Squad
WR (2) - Uzoma Nwachukwu / Chandler Worthy
TE (1) - Khairi Lee
OT (1) - Kendall Lamm
OG (1) - Chad Slade
DE (1) - Cam McLeod
OLB (1) - Lynden Trail
ILB (1) - Max Bullough
CB (1) - Jumal Rolle
S (1) - Lonnie Ballentine

Wolverine:

Cody White was already cut
Tarpinian? I don't think he has even played 1 snap this pre-season. Don't see him making it.

Thought White was out with an injury. Insert Slade in his place and Mancz onto PS. Tarpinian is one of the better ST players in the league. I think he will make the squad although Tuggle and Bullough seem to have stepped it up on ST and could make him expendable.

If you put Khari Lee on the PS, I believe he'll get picked up by another team quick!

Is EZ even PS eligible?

Hoyer seems to think a lot of EZ if Hard Knocks is anything to go by.

I actually think Lee deserves the TE3 spot more than Griffin, based on talent and upside.

After rewatching the 4th quarter of the Saints game I'm sticking with Mancz over Ferentz. Even though he was directly responsible for 2 false starts (one got called against the saints, which was pretty funny), he made good downfield blocks and was able to push the pile on 2 of Hilliards 3rd and 1 conversions. He did really really well on Savages' TD drive when he actually got the snap off, the passing plays too. I can see him being put on the PS squad though

Already made mine, before the first round of cuts.

So did I, but my original list might not be faring so well:

ST: 3
* K: Bullock
* P: Lechler
* LS: Weeks

OFFENSE: (24)
QB (3): Hoyer, Mallet, Savage
RB (4): Blue, Grimes, Polk, Prosch
WR (5): Hopkins, Washington, Shorts, Mumphery, Strong
TE (4): Graham, Griffin, Fiedorowicz, Lee
OL (8): Brown, Newton, Brooks, Jones, Sua-filo, J. Adams, Clark, Ferentz

Defense: (26)
DL (6): Watt, Wilfork, Crick, Pagan, Covington, Nix
OLB (4): Clowney, Simon, Mercilus, K. Brown
ILB (5): Cushing, Mohamed, McKinney, Dent, Bullough
CB (6): JJo, KJ, KJo, Bouye, Morris, James
S (5): Moore, Demps, Hal, Pleasant, Ballentine

In my original list, I had us carrying Hilliard and Worthy. I also had us with Ankrah as our 4th OLB, now I'm not sure between Brown and Trail.

The ILB spot totally befuddles me. One week, I have Bullough making it, the next week, I don't. I've put Tarpinian and Tuggle in, and pulled them back out. That's a tough position to call.

I didn't originally have Khari Lee making it, but he's made so many great grabs, that he's turning into an OD-lite.

I also think we're probably going to carry more DL than what I've listed.

EDIT: Forgot the Clark trade. SMH.

CB....Joseph, Jackson, Bouye, Johnson, Morris
S......Moore, Hal, Pleasant, Demps, Ballentine
ST....Weeks, Lechler, Bullock

Several tough calls. Trail as the forth OLB is questionable, as is Feiler as the third OG. Hilliard vs Grimes was a hard call. Going with the veteran experience. Didn't have a slot for Tarpinian. Worthy makes it as a return specialist. The forth OLB was a hard call. I just don't know. Could just as easily be Thompson, Washington or Brown. Who's better at setting the edge?

But he's another guy who could be picked off of the PS. He might be good enough, so that the risk if he's placed there.
Billy didn't draft Griffin did he, that was one of Kubiaks picks right ? If that's so I give Lee a chance of being retained ahead of Griffin

Of our 2nd/3rd string OLBs, I thought Ankrah was better at setting the edge against the run than guys like Trail, Brown, and Thompson.

I guess I wuz worng, though.

Yeah, maybe it was just wishful thinking to have another Husker on the roster.

I had us as carrying 5 OLB, Clowney, Mercilus, Simon, (Ankrah) and Brown.

How many players did we bring in from other teams' cuts last year?

Johnson, Morris...we brought in Simon at some point...rolle at some point...porkchop...

I think I'm missing someone...

Just trying to guess how many guys we'll have that aren't currently here. I think Arab is a possibility. Oline, OLB...maybe receiver.

Same here. But I'm not absolutely positive about Brown. He makes plays happen, but both in a good way and a bad way. He's around the ball a lot, but he has problems setting the edge. So, we'll see. I have a feeling they'll try to nab someone on the waiver wire.

Jeff Adams was claimed at the last round of cuts like Morris. Pickett was brought in off the street around week 3 or 4. Rolle & Simon were signed off other PS's.

Yes, Mancz if we can't keep them both. I'd like to.
I thought we should have kept Tarp. We're going to need an extra LB.

Dang...hate to see him go but at least we got something for him.
See what happens when you impersonate the boss so well? Get sent to Chicago.

He would have been claimed on waivers trying to get him onto the practice squad, so...

While we got something for Lee .... it makes me sad ... because he's better than Griffin. Seems like a case where they wanted to justify keeping the established guy.

Excellent trade and may not be our last. O'Brien does not need to justify anything let alone keeping a vet. Hopefully in future drafts we will be able to use picks to trade up for higher percentage players.

We will sign more after the 2nd round of cuts. Those are the guys teams hated to cut more than those presently available.

To me Safety Lonnie B needs to be cut. He plays lazy, he gives up on plays and i see him jogging around out there. I don't think he will make the final 53. Its a shame to cause he has the size and the speed, just don't like the way he plays IMO.

The only change I have after last night is that Kourtnei Brown has beat out Lynden Trail. The only question I still have is the choice between Feiler and Chad Slade and I'll stick with Feiler with Slade going to the PS.

What do we think the PS roster will look like? Seeing a lot of names being thrown out there.

I think they keep Frentz (the Iowa coachs son), instead of Mancz but I too would keep Mancz if it were me.
And I'd also be surprised if they released Nix at this point even though he has been basically unimpressive.
