Why are YOU a Houston Texans fan???

I was thinking about this so I decided to put it to the board. Why are you a Houston Texans fan?

There are various reasons why people get behind a team. I thought it would be cool to find out why you got behind the Texans.

I love football, I think it’s the most exciting game to not only play, but watch too. I am NOT a football expert, I do not know the in and outs that some do on this board, but to me that’s not as important as the fun and excitement that the game brings.

So why a Houston Texans fan? There are 31 other teams out there?

For a couple of years in high school I was a ball boy for the Oilers. I carried Jeff Fishers radio cords for him for his first game as head coach on MNF. When the Oilers left, I lost my job. Then I moved to Colorado a couple of years latter. When the Texans were announced I instantly fell in love with the team. The team gives me a since of pride for my home state, and city. It’s also nice to be there from the beginning and watch the team grow. A lot of us have been here for all excitement, and all the anger  The Texans also closed the door on the void that Bud Adams left us with.

For me, the Texans ARE Texas, they represent everything our state stands for.

If it has the name Houston on the uniform, I'm cheering for them.
 
I am a Texans fan because I believe that when you are born in a city that has NFL football you are assigned the team in that city by GOD HIMSELF and are honor bound to support that team until the day you die, or the day they move away and abandon you (for examples see the Houston Oilers, Cleveland Browns (original), St Louis Cardinals, Oakland Raiders, Los Angelas Raiders, Los Angelas Rams, and maybe the worst offender ever, the Baltimore Colts)

Once your team has given your city the shaft you are free to support any team you like, even the one that deserted you if you so desire. When the NFL sees fit to right the wrong that was done to you then it's like you've been drafted. In Houston's case you're now a Texans fan and you'd better get to work on that ASAP.
 
Do you have that written down somewhere? I remember you saying something incredibly similar when the topic was brought up awhile ago (probably over a year or so).

In any case, I agree with that. I was born in Houston and grew up as a child rooting for the Oilers even if I didn't understand the game or what I was really cheering for. When they left I lost all interest in football...but it was revived when Houston got a team and I took the time to watch their opener against Dallas. (Still have the VHS which I watch occasionally).

I got hooked on the Houston Oilers during Earl Campbell's rookie season in 1978. I was 11 at the time. I figured that I would follow all the teams from Houston so I wasn't hoping from one city's sports team to another city's in each sport. I have spent the last 27 years rooting on the Oilers, Rockets, Astros, Aeros, Texans, Comets, Energy, Cougars ... you name it. What a ride it's been!!! Can't imagine life without Houston sports (even though I've only been in the city once for a Texans preseason game against the Broncos 2 years ago). Hope to get there again for a regular season Texans game again soon.

I was an early Bears fan (i mean real early). My Father was from Illinois and he was the one that got me hooked on football at an early age. I became an Oiler fan when we moved to Houston in the early 70's however mainly due to Herv's fundamental laws of football fanship and the rest is pretty much history.
 
Being born in Irving - as noted above it was my God given right to support the Cowboys. Plus it was easy since they were the self proclaimed America's team and I found out growing up it was either a love em or hate em depending on the NFL fan you asked. So, I loved them through the 70's and even in the 80's when my parents moved me to Houston to which I discovered Columbia blue and Bud.

Ah, Bud - you made it SO easy for me not to switch allegiance to the Oilers. So, I stayed with the Cowboys through the glorious decade of the 90s with JJ coaching the "highlights". Then Jerrah avanced further down the path of the dark side - became a little too obsessed with "knowing it all" and what was best for the team. The force was strong with Lord Jones, but he was swayed towards evil - tarnished the star. (oops, I digress.)

So, not fully heart and soul into the support of the Boys, I floundered a bit. Just about then there was news that Houston was in the running for the 32nd franchise and watched that process with great interest - the light shined down, the angles sang, the clouds parted, (L.A. couldn't get it together even with Tags giving multiple chances) and alas St. McNair brought forth the mighty TEXANS from the ashes of the dome. Amen.

So, yes - I'll still root for the Cowboys (never forget your first love), but my heart and soul support is all TEXANS.

Being from Canada, I cant really tell u the 1 reason I really like the Texans....I've followed them since they started and enjoy watching the progress of the young players and another big plus is the fact that most teams give them the underdog role...its nice to watch them upset

I never really watched the NFL all that much I guess I was sorta for the Cowboys but I remember I watched the opener against Dallas and 2 things struck me.

#1 I never really watched football much I thought it would be cool to be for a team that just started PLUSE there from Texas. #2 That QB they have is sure good for a Rookie LOL. :highfive:
 
I think I've probably used that answer a half dozen times Led. It's like a "Who's on First?" routine for me now. It came up a long time ago when a good friend of mine was talking about being a lifelong Steeler fan. Well, he's from Kentucky where they have no NFL football so in my mind he's like a free agent. Anyone born where there is no NFL football is free to choose their team and they can move to a town with NFL football and keep that team if they want, hence he did not have to become an Oiler fan when he moved here.

We came up with all kinds of rules and laws, corallary's and exceptions. Someday I need to write it all down.

I was born in Baltimore and raised on the Colts from the height of the Johnny U days right up through the dark days leading to their Robert Irsay-led demise. :crying: Meanwhile I had migrated to Houston and and had a flirtatious affair with the Oilers but it was never serious. It was just too soon and my football heart was not in it. We parted as friends and there were no hard feelings when they left for Tennessee.
When the 32nd franchise was awarded to Houston I knew that I would jump on board as a fan. I was caught up in the excitement and was an early season ticket buyer. Being in on the 'ground floor' of a franchise's life was something I had not experienced and I think it makes my feelings for the Texans that much stronger. There is a certain sense of 'ownership' involved. I'm sure many of you feel the same way. The fact that the franchise has been very fan friendly since the beginning has helped cement my love for this team.
I took my father to the franchise opener as a way of repaying him (in a small way) for all the games he took me to when I was growing up. I've seen many memorable events in person but that was the most emotional and exciting game I've ever been to. When Billy Miller scored I was hooked forever. And my father, always the kind of guy who ran to be the first guy thru the exits to "beat the traffic" didn't want to leave until he had soaked up his fill of the atmosphere.

Was a huge Oiler fan back in the day (late 70's). In fact, the Oilers are the reason I became a Cowboy fan. You see....I hated the freaking Pittsburgh Steelers so much that when they beat the Oilers and played the Cowboys in the SB, there wasn't a bigger Cowboy fan on the planet than me. That's how bad I wanted the freaking Steelers to lose. When the Cowboys won the SB a couple of years later against the Broncos, I was into them for good. I was still an Oiler fan first though.

I really can't explain my relationship with the Oilers. I lived and died with them, mostly died as every Oiler fan did. But something happened during that Buffalo game where I said that was it. I would never root for that team again, and I didn't. Bud had already held the city hostage once and when the rumors about a move to Tennessee started, I was like, leave already.

In the mean time, I'm enjoying the Cowboys winning 3 SB in 4 years. When the NFL announced that they were expanding and Houston was up against LA for that team, I never thought we'd get it. I was excited when we got it mainly because I couldn't believe how LA dropped the ball. Especially with the NFL bending over backwards trying to give it to LA. I was pretty impressed with McNair.

When they announced that the team would be called the Texans, I thought how unoriginal can you get. If LA had gotten it would they have been called the Los Angeles Californians?? But after seeing the logo and the colors and the explanation of what the colors represented, the name grew on me. I can't imagine this team being called anything else.

Then I started thinking that I've got a once in a lifetime chance to be apart of something from the very beginning. This was intriguing to me considering the folks I know who have followed the Colt .45/Astros since their inception. It wasn't long after that that I purchased season tickets for that inaugural season. I have yet to miss a game.

The first 2 seasons were kinda like a dream. We were tailgating, which was a mind-blowing experience, we had a new state-of-the-art stadium, a new football team...I mean, winning football games really didn't mean that much. You knew going in that it would take a few years.

Now, entering our 4th season, after seeing this team improve every year, seeing the plan coming to fruition, the excitement for me is bigger than ever. I fully expect this team to be in wild card contention this year. And when this team does make the playoffs, it'll make the "Luv Ya Blue" days look like a Jr. High pep rally.

Maybe it's not the case, but this organization has made ME feel like they put the fans first. That means a lot and I appreciate it. 4 years into it and I'm still just as excited as I was when I walked into the completed Reliant Stadium for the first time on August 20, 2002.

I can't explain the Oilers. I'm a devout Astro fan and they've given me more than their fair share of disappointment and I still root for them. I still like the Cowboys although on September 8, 2002, I was as happy and cheering as loud as any of the 69,604 people in Reliant were.

Being apart of something from the very beginning......that's pretty cool.
 
i used to watch oiler games with my dad growing up, and it was always special when we both could be home to see one, then they moved, and i as well as my father grew an instant hatred for the titans for the great betrayal. I thought i wasnt going to be a texans fan originally, i thought we were going to be the laughing stock of the league, a football tampa bay devil ray, if you will. However, a friend of mine got a position as a scout shortly after the franchise was awarded, so i got the opportunity to tour the texans offices before they moved into the stadium, and was instantly won over. These people were capable, had a plan, and seemed determined to win. I have some of the merchandise they made when they were deciding the team names....yes, i have a houston apollo's shirt. I got to see the teams very first draft board, saw with my own eyes david carrs name at the very top, and it all was very special to me. Since then, ive been able to attend the texans-giants game, and the texans-jaguars battle red game, both victories. It is a once in a lifetime opportunity for me to be able to support a home franchise from the very beginning, and i will continue to do so until they become the los angeles texans.
 
As my user name suggests I am a Texans Fan from Auckland, New Zealand. I check this board every day and when I saw this thread I had to share my story. I have been a huge football fan since the 49ers - Bengals superbowl, which was pretty much the first football game I ever saw. My favourite player becuase of that game became Ronnie Lott for knocking the snot out of Icky Woods.

I followed one team or another without ever really feeling a team because of my lack of understanding of the history and traditions of the clubs. So when the Texans came on board I decided that I would throw my support behind them so I could know the whole history from the day they were founded to the day when they win their first superbowl and beyond.

That is why I am a Texans Fan.
 
why am i a texan fan?...well i'm originally from cypress...that little northwest corner of houston...i grew up watching warren moon and the dallas cowboys because my dad was a die hard cowboy fan...but he taught me one very important leason in life...you are a texan so you cheer for every texas team unless one happens to play the other...in which case you pick a side and stick with it...well i hate dallas been up there a couple of times and just hate the town...any team that calls themselves god's team is asking for in it in my opinion...but when Bud "i'm a fat retard" adams moved the team there wasn't football anymore...i gradually saw myself cheering for tampa bay...the as i was leaving for college bob mcnair brought a team back to houston

now why am i a texan fan because after seeing what losing a team did to houston and to me i will always cheerish this team...this is our team...we are witness to the birth and growth of this team...casserly and mcnair have brought in top notch guys...and this team is constantly the underdog in every fight...and i love to cheer for the underdogs...i am a texan fan because i am a texan and a houstonian...and because football rules over every other silly sport
 
I'm pretty much in the same boat as many of the posters here. I was born and raised in Houston, and I've always supported my hometown teams as long as I can remember. I recall when I was 12 or so I was a pretty artistic kid, and I loved to draw and that sort of thing. It was about the same time that the Rockets were making there back to back championship runs. I remember laying on the floor drawing players like Horry, Drexler, Hakeem, and Cassell as I watched their playoff games. I even had some clay, and I made a Sam Cassell sculpture (it looked like an alien in a Rockets uniform so I guess I got it pretty accurate). I've long since lost many of those pictures, but I still have the Drexler one. Later on when the Rockets were playing the Jazz in the Western Conference Finals my Mom bought my brother and I tickets to one of the games. Unfortunately it was the game where Stockton hit the 3pt shot at the buzzer to send the Jazz to the Finals to face MJ and the Bulls. It was tons of fun still even though we lost. My Dad used to take me to Astros games as well when I was as young as 4, and he even managed to get us to a Oilers game as well. I'm rambling on, but basically Houston sports is in my blood, and as long as there is a team here you can bet that I'll support it.
 
born bred and raised in texas..went to college in texas....grew up south of houston, was always a big oiler fan, loved chris dishman and ken houston. when the oilers left and the texans came you know i was going to be a texan fan. so i'm die hard texans, they showed me this off-season they are committed to winning so i ride or die with the texans.
 
Because I live in Houston and the Texans and Bucs are the reason I started liking football. (O and they got the best logo in the NFL)
 
I never used to watch football. I one year I decided that in the fall I will start to watch since all my friends did and it was fun. That was Texans first year as it was mine. So i decided to make Texans my team. BTW i'm from New Jersey. So people always ask me why i'm a Texans fan and this is what I tell them. I was there last year for the Colts game.....and Houston was a great host. We had a great time. Can't wait to come back there again.
 
I grew up in Houston and was an avid Oilers fan. I think I got that from my dad. He had me convinced that Pittsburgh (the city itself) and the Steelers were the essence of Evil (see Darth Vader). I learned to love them inspite of their disappointments...wait BECAUSE of their disappointments. I looked down on fans of successful teams, because it was so easy to be loyal to them. I looked at the Oiler's failures as tests of my faith, kind of like it must have felt to be a Red Sox fan prior to last year. Or perhaps the way a Cubs or Lions fan feels right now (I would have included the Cards but I don't believe they have any fans).

I think of the Oilers as my drunken father than ran off with his mistress (Nashville). I think of the Texans more like that really cool step-father that comes in and makes my mom (the city) happy. I love the Texans, but it would have been nice to win one with the Oilers.
 
I'm a native Texan. Born and raised on Texas Ave, Texas City, Texas. When I first started watching football, I liked the Vikings...purple people eaters were cool. However, after my fascination w/purple wore off, I became an Oilers fan. I agonized w/Pastorini and Dickey. I rejoiced w/Luv Ya Blue--gotta hate those Steelers. When Bud the dud moved the team, I was pissed, but I hoped for a new, better team owner and name. There was no other name choice for me--TEXANS was it. As I travel around the world serving are great nation, I never forget my roots, my home, my Texas. As I come close to 20 years in the USAF, I keep thinking about retirement and what I could do next. Of course my fantasy job would be to work with the Texans. However, I realize given my profession, I'll probably end up in DC or maybe San Antonio. Thank the Lord for satellite TV and radio.

I started following the NFL watching a highlights show in the early 90s back home in england. i followed the 49ers coz at the time steve young was winning superbowls, and i was a kid and i didnt know any better. then the nfl went on premium cable, which my family didnt have. 4 years ago when i went to university i got internet and cable and started following the nfl again. when it came to picking a team, i decided to put my loyalties with the expansion team, I got really into the 2002 draft and i've followed the team from there. now i live in Chicago (my wife is from saint louis), so every couple of years i'll get to see the mighty texans shutout the useless bears in the freezing cold!
 
I was an Oilers fan. I moved to Texas in 1986 from Montana. I was 13 then. I just remember watching Warren Moon play. I remember Blaine Bishop. I have been an Houston fan for every sport since then.
 
It all started when I was 9, my brother started playing TECMO Superbowl on NINTENDO. He thought he was the best because he could kick everyone's butt with Bo Jackson and his RAIDERS. Once I saw that the game had actual players and ratings, I started playing when my brother wasn't around. He didn't want me playing his game, he thought I was too young to understand football. So 6 months later I told him that he wasn't that good and even I could beat him. So I took the Houston Oilers and passed my way onto the all-time underdog victories chart. The Oilers were the best team ever in my mind. So I fell in love with Houston Football right from the start. When Steve Mcnair got drafted I figured that he would be the next Warren Moon, but stronger and faster. So he became my next favourite player. I didn't care what the team name was, my fav team was Steve Mcnair's team. But, when news of Houston getting a new team came out, I realized that my heart was still with Houston. And I started cheering for them equally. I love expansion drafts and watching the Texans start from scratch was exciting. Also, I've been a huge follower of the NFL draft since my teens. So when the Texans drafted my favourite player coming out of college (Andre Johnson)....It was the nail in the coffin for the Titans. I still cheer for them, but when the two teams meet up, its all TEXANS.

I'm a Canadian, and I love HOUSTON FOOTBALL.

I became a rabid professional football fan in the Oilers' "Luv Ya Blue" era. Those memories are some of the best ones as a family. My mom's Luv Ya Blue sign on the living room wall with the columbia blue pom-poms on both sides, and an Early Campbell poster next to it, will always give me smiles. My family always crowded around the television set every Oiler game, and I was lucky enough to go to several of the games in that era. Good times, great memories.

So naturally, the big ol' hole left in my heart when the Oilers left was fulfilled when Mr. Bob brought a new team to H-town.

Reading all the personal stories is great, so figured I'd submit mine.
My home state is Michigan, and first sports love is baseball, so the Detroit Tigers have always been my team. Pestered my dad into becoming a fan and he took me to a few games. Really didn't jump into the NFL until the Lions won there first four games in 1980 ( short lived bandwagon effect ). In 1981 I moved to Houston and lived on the outskirts of the luv ya blue era. Didn't have any friends here that were avid sports fans, so just kinda watched from afar. Went to an occasional Oilers game with buddies from work, then in 1991 some guys asked me to play fantasy football, and then it became serious. Swore off the Cowboys when Jerry Jones came in and fired Landry, then started hating the Oilers when they walked out of Houston. Have always kept a spot for my home state Lions, but was more than happy to begin a fresh allegiance with the 32nd franchise. Also, my first grandson was born in the Texans first year, so Jonathan and I will be Texans fans for life.

So this year if you see a three year old in his Davis 37 jersey, and an old fart in a Glenn 31 jersey, that's the GrandBrat with his GranDad Rat.
 
Having been born and raised in Canada hockey has always been my number one sport.However I have always really enjoyed NFL football. Living very close to the Buffalo I always saw the Bills games on T.V. Although I followed the bills for years I never really had any feelings toward their football team (I was just there to watch the game not really cheering for anybody) Then I heard Houston was getting a franchise and was very excited because Houston was my favourite American City that I have visited. I saw that first game against those Cowgirls and there was this young fresh faced QB the same age as me who put on one hell of a show this kid under the pressure of playing a state rival on a nationally televised game which just happened to be the first of his career. Have you ever seen a QB face this kind of pressure in his first game and win. Wow what a memory it still gives me goosebumps. So thank you Houston and thank you David Carr for giving me a football team and football city to be passionite about.

Couldn't have said it better myself. That is the reason I'm cool with fans of other teams, yet can't stand it when someone is a fan of a team without any connection what so ever. Actually new a guy in the mid 90's that was a cowboy, lakers, and braves fan. How convenient.

On to my reason though.
Like everyone else I was a huge spoiler fan. When they moved away I took a season or two off then picked back up on them in Dec of the season before they changed uni's. Then we all knew what happened their 1st seasonin the new uni's and the 2nd wasn't all that disappointing.
Then I was stuck with a decision, do I drop off the titans and go full bore Texans or do try to juggle both and drop the titans once the main guys are gone (McNair, George, Hopkins). I had devoted so much time and energy into the titans and didn't really want to just drop them like a hot rock.
I was so confused.
Then here we are the 1st Sun of the new season for the Texans. I actually passed on ticket for the game. I would've went with a cowboy fan. I had a big day planned with some family coming over and just bought a big screen too. And I hate to say it but I also didn't think they'd win either so I really didn't want to piss any one off by not being @ the party that I put together.

Anyways I remember cheering for the titans to come from behind on the eagles that day and they did. Then 7:30 p.m. came (19-10) and I have not looked back to the titans since. Even if they would've lost, it wouldn't be any different but that first win really helps though.
 
I was born in Houston moved to Corpus when I was 6. i watched football every sunday with my dad when I was little. Had to watch Cowboys games because thats what he watched. I still have family in Houston and visit every 3 to 4 months. My very first Texans games was the dive by Carr against Jacksonville. Ever since then I was hooked. I even got my brother liking the Texans and that's because he does not like sports. :homer:
 
Just a true Houston fan in every sense.... always have been and always will be. Proud of our great State and City. Was very hurt when the Oilers left and had to completely focus on College football, Rockets and Stros. It was weird not having an NFL team to root for all those years. But it made me truly appreciate what we had...and that much more excited when the Texans were born!!!!

Its also GREAT to hear all of these TRUE Texans fans from all over the world who have decided to follow a great organization from the beginning. Welcome aboard!! Its been a fun ride thus far and we are about to turn a corner into some truly amazing times as a fan.

Born and raised in San Diego Ca. I was always a Charger fan. Having lived in Texas since 96 and playing high school football here I consider myself an honorary Texan. When I heard about the Texan franchise I decided then to get a new start with a new team closer to my home. I will always root for the Chargers except when they're playing the Texans. When we win a Super Bowl I will be able to say that I've been watching this team from the beginning. I am and always will be a Cowboy hater so the Texans are the only Texas team in my eyes. Red White and Blue...hmm Seems to me the Texans should be America's team. I know we're the Texas state Champs!!!
 
What a GREAT thread! Reading all those stories brought tears to my old eyes!Makes me not only love our TEXANS so much, but all the great fans who follow them from all parts of the world.

I am fortunatly one of the few fans in Houston who has had the privilege of watching two franchises from the beginning. I remember going to the first ever Oiler game in the old Jeppsen (sp) stadium, and also the first game they played in the dome. I have loved the game of football since I was about 6y/o, and since I am not ashamed of my age, that is about 54 years. Before the Oiler days it was either high school or college games, but I loved going to see a game in person. TV just didn't cut it for me, and still doesn't. After the Oilers left, my heart was so heavy I had a difficult time watching any football game at all. Since I have also been a huge Niner fan, I tried to follow them, but, it just wasn't the same not having my own home team to pull for. I was hooked on our TEXANS the second Saint McNair signed on the dotted line. Signed up for season tickets immediately and have not missed one home game. I traveled to Canton, Ohio to see them play their first game in the HOF. I am not ashamed to say I was so overwhelmed when they ran out on that field for the first time, sporting the red, white and blue, with that awesome logo, I bawled like a newhorn baby. (advantage of being a women :)) The Giant fans around me thought I had lost my mind. When Billy Miller scored our first TD EVER, you would have thought we had won the SB I was so elated. When he did it again against the "girls" in our opener, I became a Billy Miller fan for life. As it was with the Oilers, I expect to go through the ups and downs of life in the NFL. BUT, I know one thing for certain! I will live to see our TEXANS win a SB!! NO doubt about it!!
 
I grew up in a household between an Oiler's fan (My MOM) and a Pittsburgh fan (My Dad) which made for interesting Sunday's to say the least. I just loved watching the game yet never devoted myself to one team. When the Oiler's moved on my mom pretty much quit on football all together while my dad still ranted over the Steelers. Then came the Texans. When I saw the uniforms, the decals, the colors, and heard the name I got a sense of pride that came over me I hadn't felt since my son was born. It's gotten to where I can't wait till the end of the work week, not for the weekend itself, but for Texans Sunday Football. I find myself yelling at the TV in the manner my father once did for his beloved Steeler's and I finally feel like I'm a part of something where i can be a true fan, ups and downs, win or lose, always be there. So, I've devoted myself to this team and the day we win the Super Bowl I'll take that much more comfort in knowing that I've been with them from the beginning.

What about the Gamblers? Man, I lived & died with the Gamblers. I once saw a Gambler-Michigan Panther game in the Dome where Jim Kelly & Bobby Hebert combined for something like 10 TD passes & 1000 yards passing. A great game. And say what you will about the Run & Shoot (I'm sure you're right), but when run effectively it's the most exciting offense in football. And no one has ever run it as well as Jim Kelly did. I still think Jim Kelly is the best QB to ever wear a Houston uniform.

Like it's been said so many times before, if it says Houston on the label then I'm buying. I won't lie, I watched the Comets win their championships. I haven't watched a WNBA game that didn't have the Comets playing. Nor will I. And for those who grew up in Houston but are cowgirl fans...you are not my friends.

Yes, I also followed the Gambler's and followed Jim Kelly when he went to Buffalo. A agree that JK was one of the best QBs to ever wear a Houston uni. To bad it was never for the Oilers. I saw him inducted into the HOF when I went to see the Texans play. A double inspiring trip that one was!

Born and raised a Oilers fan now a Texans fan. Never been a traitor to the GREAT COUNTRY OF TEXAS. I cant wait until we become our own country. I hate traitors by that i mean i people from Texas who root for a team thats not in their area.
