Why are YOU a Houston Texans fan???

I was born in Brownie Country, slapped on the behind at birth, and christened a Browns lover/Steeler hater... just the way it was. Then upon growing up and moving to Phoenix, I was lost. No NFL team in town. I didn't have the Browns forced down my throat anymore and didn't know which way to turn ..lol .. I had interest in the Rams, Raiders and Chargers somewhat...
Then moving to Houston, I immediately fell in love with the Oilers.. Bum, Earl, Dante and gang. Loved 'em! ..
Then again, after the Bum Phillips fallout, I was just plain mad .. and lost interest when the coaching changes happened.
I was ready when the announcement of the Texans came about. The time was right as far as I was concerned. Everything fell into place for me. Everything about the Texans seemed so right, a totally exciting new start!

I am not ashamed to say I was so overwhelmed when they ran out on that field for the first time, sporting the red, white and blue, with that awesome logo, I bawled like a newhorn baby. (advantage of being a women)

I've been there myself. . . A few times actually, when they ran out onto the field in Canton, the first time I walked into the stadium when we played the Cowboys, and when Billy scored that first touchdown that same night.

This team evokes so many emotions from me. Sometimes we speak about this team as if it were part of our own family. . . like a child. A lot of us have been here from the start, and we all know that when you are emotionally attached to something it brings all the emotions with is. . . good and bad.
For part of last season and up untill about a month ago, several people didn't like my signature that I had posted "This team will never be a playoff contender untill we have a new coaching staff." I understand why people didn't like it; it upset them, and didn't make me seem like a true fan. Let me tell you, I am such a huge fan, I love this team, I love this team so much that they were able anger me to the point that I wanted to voice how I felt with every post.

This team is special to me, I can't explain it. I spend a good 6 hours a day with this team....over the internet, talking about it, or even daydreaming!

Thanks Bob McNair, your a special man in all of our hearts!

does this mean i have to be a Niners fan? i really really dont want to. i think i should be an exception to your rule

I think there can be exceptions for non-bandwagon fans. As soon as we make the playoffs though, new ones must be carefully indonctrinated and cannot not be true fans until five years later, or a period of two (2) losing season following making said playoffs, at which point they must remain fans. If that fan at anytime abandons the allegiance, all ties are severed for eternity.

I don't know if that sounds more like a cult blood oath or a legal document, but it should suffice.

My story is this..... I once was a cowboys watcher handed from my grandfather on down. All they way through the 90's when super bowls seemed commonplace. But then they turned sour and went "HollyWood" no longer the good ole boys just a bunch of thugs who it seemed were caught each week slapping hookers and doing drugs. I really lost alot of interest in football for several years. Then the 02 season came about and there was this new team the TEXANS they caught my attention.

During the first game I was asked who I liked. My anser was this "I will follow who ever wins this game". Well Here I am a die hard Texan fan in San Antonio (cowboys country) looking to get season tickets next season (06)

Cheers

I'm sure I'll take the "homer" beating for this, but here it goes since you asked:

I've never been much of a fan of professional football. Sure, everyone likes the playoffs and the Super Bowl, but for the other 17 weeks of the season, I was pretty impartial to what was going on. For me, the NFL lacked the enthusiasm and emotion of college football, which I believe is the highest level of allegiance there is.

Until 2002, the only reason I'd watch NFL games would be to follow the careers of Fresno State alumni. Trent Dilfer, Ron Cox, Steven Baker, Lorenzo Neal, Michael Pittman, Billy Volek, etc. If one of the 'Dogs were playing, I'd be interested. (insert homer beating here) I know I'm not the only Fresno alum to feel this way, but probably one of the only ones willing to put it in print.

So, the 2001 college football season ended, and I knew that David Carr was starting to project as a very high pick in the 2002 draft. At the same time, the Texans were starting to put together a team and made no bones about making David their inaugural pick. As others have stated, what a great time to connect with a brand new team. See everything from the beginning. Be there through the good and bad times.

Even though Carr was the original reason I started to follow the franchise, the manner in which the organization carries itself has made me a true fan. You'd be hard-pressed to find anyone who would speak ill of this owner or this organization's commitment to their players and their community. It is for this reason that I am a true Texans fan. I have been a faithful NFL Sunday Ticket subscriber since the Texans inaugural season so I could follow this team from CA.

There will never be team that surpasses my love for the Fresno State Bulldogs. But this team has made me a fan of the professional game and what it can be if handled appropriately.

Thank you, Mr. McNair for your leadership and example. And thanks to all of you who contribute to this Board on a daily basis. Your insights, passion, and knowledge of the game make the offseason almost bearable....

What about the Gamblers?
Thanks lucky for reminding me about them. Those were great days as well. It was awesome to unleash Jim Kelley on the football world. Mouse Davis and that offense were something. Thanks for the memories!!

When my dad moved to Houston, I became a fan of the Oilers as well as all the other pro teams there. The only time I didn't cheer for a Houston team is when they played the Memphis Showboats (still the worst nickname ever) in the USFL. When Bud decided to move to Nashville and stopped here in Memphis for a year I attended all the home games but still referred to them as Houston cause I felt the attachment to them. When they moved from here, I lost all interest in them. When the NFL announced that a team was being put back in Houston I was happy that I would have a team to cheer for. I used to come down to see an Oilers game each year but haven't been able to come down for a Texans game yet. Trying to see if my work schedule will allow me to do so this year. If not, hey I've still got Sunday Ticket and my Carr jersey. Can't beat being a Texan fan!!

Because I'm tired to be a Colts Manning fan with all the records and no rings, because i'm bored to see how the patriots defense destroy any hope in the offense of any team, because I'm happy to see that people it's staring to see the really power of the red battle day and because, it was the first team I selected in the madden(this the most important)

I'm a native Houstonian (West U) who has lived all over the US and overseas. Always would come back to Houston between moves and became a big football fan and followed the Oilers. I attended Oiler games as a youngster at Rice Stadium and saw the likes of Joe Nameth, George Blanda etc. Had a neighbor take me to the Oiler games in the early 70's to see the terrible Oilers(excluding Ken Houston :0) get crushed by teams like Hank Stram's KC Chiefs. Finally the Oilers drafted the great Earl Campbell and then the real NFL love affair started. The Luv Ya Blue years were unbelieveable and Houston behaved like hard core College football fans. The Bumisms, Pom Poms, songs, etc were great. Andy Dorris at the time was a starting DE who ran into my car the week before the AFC Championship ....but it was all good. BTW...Robert Brazile(best Oiler LB ever) was a monster..especially in person :)

I always heard alot of bad stories about Bud Adams...but never thought he would yank the team from the city that helped make him wealthy. But he did...and my passion for the NFL waned and how could I follow the Cowboys with an owner like Jerrah Jones.

When Houston got back a team...that rekindled the fire. And having a class owner like Bob McNair is the icing on the cake. Its special to follow a team from its start...even if the ride is bumpy. Can't wait for the playoff football ahead. :highfive:

I grew up loving the oilers. i remember i went to my first game when we sucked bad. then i remember when we finally made it to the playoffs. i believe we played the seahawks in that first playoff game after the long stretch of us sucking. then we were in the playoffs for all those years. thats when i really loved football and the oilers. then came the Bills game, i probably cried after that game. then the chiefs game, oh we were so close. then they left when they started stinking it up again. i remember that last game in the dome, that place was empty. after they left, i didn't watch as much football. i never liked the cowboys, i hated when rock 101 would play cowboy games, i wanted to listen to some music. so then i heard news of a new team possibly coming to houston. man was i so excited. but then it was between houston and LA. i thought LA had us beat. sure glad i was wrong, ive been a huge texan fan since that day i heard we were getting a team. i was curious as to what our new name would be, i must have thought of hundreds of names. the texans was actually one of the names i envisioned us havng. so since we started playing, i might have missed 2-3 games for various reasons. i remember last year i was living in austin and the minnesota game wasn't on TV, i was like wtf, where's the game? i remember seeing updates come on tv, wow we actually came back from 21. so i went outside to my car to listen on the radio, then i heard the vikes score. ouch.
now, i probably think of the texans too much. i pretty much come to this website everyday and see whats going on. football has always been my favorite sport and i'm glad i can finally call a team mine. thanks bob

When I was 8, my dad took our family on a 6 hr road trip (from Brownsville) to the Astrodome for a Monday night football game against the Miami Dolphins. Yes, that game. It was my first trip to the dome and my first pro football game.

We sat in the temporary pavilion (a high school bleachers type seating behind the goal post). The crowd in the bleachers was stomping in unison the entire game and I was getting tossed about eight inches off of my seat.
Earl Campbell ran wild, the Oilers won 35-31 and I was hooked.

I went to one Oiler game every year growing up. I was surrounded by Cowboy fans in Deep South Texas, but I stuck by my Oilers, even through the lean years of the early 80s. I lived and died with the results of each Sunday's game.

When Bud moved them to Ten-necks-see football wasn't fun anymore. I semi rooted for guys like Bruce Matthews, Eddie George, and Steve McNair, but I could not stand the though of Bud hoisting the Vince Lombardi trophy.
I followed football for the next few years with about as much passion as I follow the NHL. I would keep up enough to have an intelligent sports conversation, but I had no emotional investment.

When Houston was awarded their expansion franchise, football mattered to me again. I followed the debate of the virtues of the Apollos, Renegades, Roughnecks, etc. I wasn't crazy about the name Texans at first considering there was once a Dallas Texans team. Once they made the final announcement, and I got a look at the colors and logo, I was sold. (I still think the white helmet with slightly smaller Texans logo was sweet)

The Oilers were the team of my childhood, and though they brought many disappointments, I loved them. Bud soiled those memories, and now my four sons will never be able to see the Houston Oilers play. We'll just have to start a new family tradition with the Texans.

At first it was obviously cause DC was drafted #1 by Houston so I wanted to root for his team, being from Fresno. However I really love this team. I like the organization it is first class. Houston also seems to have good fans and and they love football. This will be my team even after DC is gone. Go Texans.
