Who do you want as the new OC?

Everybody writing Josh McCown off because reports say he’s unlikely to leave Minnesota?

Somebody that can make CJ understand that he doesn't know as much about ball as he thinks he does. Also Chip Kelly's offense is the OSU offense CJ ran at OSU so maybe Kelly will be somebody CJ will listen too, since Kelly is Day's mentor. I really cant think of another OC candidate offhand that I think CJ will be willing to listen and learn from, since apparently CJ thinks he knows more about ball than anybody but Ryan Day.

I still wouldn’t mind Klint Kubiak provided the Saints allow him to interview.

Interesting to hear some views on some of the candidates when catching up with podcasts during todays dog walk.

Heard views that we dodged a bullet with Klint Kubiak as he brings the exact same problem as Slowick if the run game isn’t working the chains won’t move.

Talking about Chip Kelly ruling with an iron fist which works for him in college where he controls the players’ playing time and therefore future prospects, but not in the NFL where players quickly sour on him.

Darrell Bevell was the name they put forward as an interesting candidate. Interesting guy with plenty of experience as a play caller.

Is this your new narrative or did you get this from someone else?

Who I want and why....................

Come on Nick, open Cal's wallet and be a hero! Demeco Ryans deal was 6 years for $24 m and is very under paid. Bring him up to Steelers HC at ~$12 m. He is a wunderkind on defense but needs a partner to do same for defense.

Assistant to the head coach offense : Ohio State's HC Ryan Day just brought championship to Ohio and won a few bowls in his history. He was paid ~$9.6 million but ~$5 m was endorsements + $500,000 for Coca Cola once annual interview. Write his contract so he could easily go to be a HC elsewhere. He brings much knowledge and a scheme that CJ Stroud and Garrett Wilson excelled under. He would also be a pull for free agents and contacts with other universities. Primo pick! Day just had his DC go lateral move to Penn State and gossip is his OC coming to Texans. Also, losing his QB, WR Egbuka, both running backs, LT Josh Simmons a round 1 guy who should start day 1 and his TE Kazmarek plus RT Donovan Jackson and OC Seth McGlauthen who was great prior to rupturing Achilles in November causing him to probably drop in draft. WR Jeremiah Smith is great but enough to keep Day?

Offensive Coordinator: also from OSU Chip Kelly mentor to Day and ran that program in 2024. IIRC, 2 x NFL HC but reportedly no longer interested that avenue. Few mention that OSU changed from a ZBS to power GAP in 2024? :wild:
If Kelly chips to Houston that should indicate a scheme change.

Oline coach: Justin Frye the same at OSU and probably would have quicker path to HC if he significantly improves our line and he should. I now have Josh Simmons, Donovan Jackson and McGlauthen on my radar.

This is what I was wanting to hear about Chip Kelly and his offense and how well CJ might adapt to.

He seems to “fit the mold” of the type of guy DeMeco wants on this team player or coach. And he’s experienced. But i’d like more marquee achievements on his resume.

Syracuse did have an impressive offense this season. But i’d be more impressed if he was coaching against tougher competition.

And OC that can install and call an efficient offense is critical. It's really important for our next OC to have really analyzed our issues this season and truly know where to make corrections. Whether it is scheme, protections, concepts, personnel, etc. For me that means a candidate that has had some experience and success in the past as an OC.

He's gotta flow like water. He has to be water. His fundamental should be solid & his team needs to be solid.

But, imo, he has to be able to recognize what defenses are doing to him, know what weaknesses are available & exploit that weekness.

This, a thousand times this.

Really got the feeling the Slowick had no ability to self-scout or adapt on the fly, once a D had him figured out he was cooked.

Are we talking about the same thing?

I was referencing things like formation sequences, plays out of certain formations, route combos and the like; or things that are beyond CJ's control.
Once the defenses figured out Stroud HE could not adjust either in regards to picking up the blitz

I believe Stroud can absolutely learn from this season. I want an OC that can identify Stroud's issues and coach him up. Create a scheme that works with him and better utilizes our current and future weapons. Yes, our O line as a unit was subpar and needs to be addressed. But I agree that some of the sacks were on Stroud. It just became a jumbled mess that our offense couldn't escape this season. Hopefully we can change that.

Stroud has to be willing to be coached.

I’m a bit concerned about the talk around Stroud in all of this.

Rumours that he wouldn’t listen to his OC in college.
Recurring images of him pouting on the sideline after bad plays while Bobby is trying to work stuff out.

I mean, right or wrong, you’ve got to play the play as called or else nothing works.

If the OC doesn’t get it right then of course we move on before questioning or top of the draft QB. But there is a worrying pattern there.

And best case scenario if this all comes to be successful with Ryans and Stroud, those OCs are going to get hired away pretty damn quick, so it will be a limiting factor now or soon either way.

Defence seemed good enough to win it all this season. I guess the one question mark is that the top 3 on the depth chart for the role of covering Kelce (Pitre, Ward, Harris) all got injured, maybe due to that misfortune you could say the D didn’t quite match up this time around. But hey, got to hope for better luck than that in future.

Can CJ work with the best OC the Texans can provide him without some firewall being built? I guess we will find out over the next 12 months-3 years.

If we are forced to hire Jerrod Johnson it will be pretty telling.

I'm unlikely to get excited about him no matter where he is. I couldn't even begin to tell you why I just don't want him. I think it goes back to that BS when he was being touted as a possible Texans HC candidate before he had even remotely the experience to be discussed for that tier of coaching.

What was he asked to do that he did not?
The accusation is that in college he refused to speak to his OC at all. The rest is speculation I believe, coming from Lance Zeirlein. Take that for what it’s worth.

Jeff Nixon has been interviewed for OC today, sounds like an interesting candidate who has coached most positions on the O and moved between college and the pros through a 20 year career.

Jerrod Johnson also had his interview today apparently.
