Which off-season moves would you like the Texans to make? (Roster/FA)

I don't see them resigning XSF. From what I heard, XSF was Ricks pick, while BOB wanted Joel Bitonio (who's been a very good player).

Amazing. Bob never misses.

Xsf isn't good, but he's a mediocre starter, one of the best on our ol, so I can't see letting him go.

No see we do have limited resources/cap-space you know - on offensive linemen save the big $$ for OTs not interior OLinemen.

Get the best OL in FA, Norville and James then draft an OT that you think is pro ready and the OL will look a lot better. You can get the $$$$ by cutting Cushing and getting JoJo to take a pay cut.

The $$$$ is there the new GM just has to figure out how he wants to spend the $$$$.

Why keep him? - as a door stop?

He tore both patellar tendons. CnD says he's more likely to win the lottery than play as effectively (low bar) as he used to.

Because he's really not making that much money, even if he comes back as mediocre to below. But yes, essentially a door stop. We won't be able to fix all our problems in one off-season. He would be a solid back up if anything.

If you think Breno was bad

Just wait until you see Newton (Who was below avg to begin with) play after tearing 2 patellars. Watson better take out an insurance policy.

looks like at least two new starters will be needed on the OL alone (Giacomini/Clark UFA). assume one in 3rd other via free agency. would Texans entertain trading to fill this need? Then probably another later pick on OL as well as undrafted prospects to beef up line.

Need to also target DB, TE and back-up QB.

Exactly. Tackles are more expensive than guards & centers (becasue they are more valuable) and we are still living in a world of finite cap space, all of us, all 32 of us.

Atleast wait until training camp, before we cut him. See what he’s got and what we have. I wouldn’t cut him before free agency starts.

If you dont think he can play you can save 2 mil and that $$$$ may be the difference in filling a hole in FA or not filling it.

We dont know if he will make it back or not, we do know no other player has ever made it back from these injuries Newton suffered.

Many players prefer being cut ASAP so they have a better chance to make the new team and/or all the free agency money isn't spent.

For sure, if $2 million is the difference between a top tier FA, you do it. I guess it just al depends.

I get what you’re saying, just not sure it’s that big of a difference in his case. I’m really curious to see how they handle Newton.

I guess we’ll see if we resign him or not. I also said “might not be”. Sometimes you roll with what you have.

X I would attempt to re-sign for near vet minimum as a backup. Hisarket shouldn't be high.

Jeff Allen $7.375 to keep/$4.825 saved if is too expensive to keep as a backup. No reason to believe OB & Devlin will flip him to LG.

Derek Newton is $3.5 to keep/$2 saved if cut. $3.5 is still an expensive backup.

I was pointing that out more generally. Saw someone suggest take them all into training camp. That's unlikely with Cushing. They'll cut him early as a courtesy, if at all.

I gotcha. The only guy I would consider taking to training camp is Newton. I think Cushing and Allen need to get cut ASAP.

1) We needed to draft like 5 linemen like last year
2) I'd bring back JJo at reasonable price
3) Cush burned the bridge when he tested positive 2nd time
4) Fido might never play again so we need TE
5) We need a safety beside Hal, Gilchrist was a "pleasant" surpise

We are about to find out about BOB's misses.

I want XSF gone, but I agree with you. Sad isn't it.

I know it's been mentioned, but this team HAS GOT to find an adequate back up QB. Lots of other important holes to fill as well, but we've all witnessed the crap show that is Savage/TJ/etc....

I've seen Fitzy's name thrown around here. What about Colt McCoy? He's been around a while, can scramble. Better than Savage/TJ. Just a thought.

I could get on board with Fitzy.

Colt will likely be starting for the Redskins after they let Cousins walk.

Barely got retained Jay Gruden is going to get rid of 4100 yd 93.9 rating Cousins for never has been, oft-injured McCoy? Dubious.

We need to make a bet,

I bet Cousins lands in Denver/Arizona/Jacksonville.

I dont know about their cap situations.

It just seems that the Redskins org has never been fully on board with the idea that Cousins is their franchise QB. Watching Snyder/Allen/Gruden screw up what McCloughan was building is actually quite entertaining.

I was thinking about the clowney situation earlier this week. I think the Texans might be a better defensive front with Watt-Reader-Watkins as the front 3 and McKinney-Cunningham-Cole-Merci as the backers. I think if you can get a 1st and a 4th for clowney, you do it. Or just a 1st. I might even entertain a high level player like Thomas in Seattle who is entering his last year and pushing 30. That back end has been a problem even in the good years for the Texans. Safeties make a huge difference on your defense if your corners aren't special.

Just thinking out loud, but this team can make a huge comeback next yr. They got a few holes like most teams do. The o-line is a problem, but I think coaching of the line is a bigger problem. Someone mentioned Robinson and Joekel as reclamation projects which is fine, but who will coach them up? I think Robinson is a guard and Joeckel is a right tackle. For a 1yr prove it deal, ok, I guess. I would still spend the capital on James and Kline 1st, before I would assume Devlin is gonna coach guys up. I have more faith in Tom Cable as a oline coach than I do Devlin.

Not a bad idea, as Clowney will need to be paid next season anyway, but my big concern is what if JJ is not the JJ of old - which is the more likely scenario here - then you will have no premier pass rusher.
I think you almost have to keep Clowney and have Watkins as depth.
Next year you can go after another good pass rusher in the draft and assess Clowney this coming season. Or see who is on the market for a better price than Clowney if JJ looks okay.

You keep Merciless, just because of his cool name, and trade Watt and Clowney as a package and get some picks. I'll still shop at HEB even if someone else is doing the commercials. Not that I watch them anyway. The commercials, not the Texans.

I watch the Texans not the commercials. I wish you people would learn to ******* read.

They should play a 4-3 with Reader/Watt at DT and Watkins in reserve. Clowney/Mercilus at DE with Heath/Covington in reserve.

LB's Cole/McKinney/Cunningham with Scarlett and a late rd pick that can play ST's Worley from OhioSt. would be a good get along with Shaqueem Griffin. Both of these guys would greatly upgrade ST's.

tyrod taylor took Bills to playoffs with decent stats and some mobility. * Gaines should be able to bring him in reasonably. Of course he could want to be a starter elsewhere

I like this, but i think Clowney should be standing up, iirc what doc said

Although I posted thread not so long ago about possibly trading Clowney, McNair is not going to allow him to leave even if he overpays. A black pro bowler playing in this defense on field with JJ Watt should help McNair's image plus the $ he will pay Clowney will get attention of other vets. Of course, future health of Watt, Merci, CLowney, Kevin Johnson, could flush this idea down the crapper.

You could let him stand up some and also play him with his hand in the dirt as a pass rusher some. Versatility is a key in RAC/Vrabel's defense. Look how the Pats used Vrabel/Ninkovich as an example of what I'm talking about.

I’d like to see us run more of a 4-3 look with Reader&JJ inside and Clowney and Mercilus at end. Personally, I don’t ever want to see Clowney in coverage again. I think this maximizes our personnel. I think JJ could still be quite effective against the run

I’m also open to trading Clowney, but only because of concerns with his knee. I’d be on the phone with Cleveland. They have a boat load of picks so taking a bit of risk on Clowney wouldn’t be as big of a deal. Additionally, pairing Clowney and Garret gives them great pass rush potential

I thought that's how they've been using Clowney. Haven't they?

I thought about that too. He's no Reggie White, but Reggie played alot of DT late in his career. I like that thought, I'm just really fearful of giving clowney 50m guaranteed.

I don’t think the base defense matters a whole lot. Technically the Texans under this regime has played quite a bit of 43 for being called a 34 team.

Teams are in nickel or dime about 65% of the time.

What ever kind of defense they want to call themselves for 30% of the game is not important.

Yup. They've also played 5 down and on a number of occasions 0 down. A lot of times when they line up 4-3, only 2 are down.

Yup, I've thought for years now watt in an under tackle position might best suit him especially with mercy or clowney on the left tackle. I'd love to see a wide 9 technique on 3rd and long as well once in a while.

I fear that knee, Clowney had his 3rd operation on it. No way I would sign him to a long term contract. The McNair's will be making the call on Clowney's contract. Lets hope they're smart about it.

I'm thinking he is the perfect candidate for the franchise tag - unless we already burned that bridge. Kinda like a wait and see/prove it safety net.
