Which off-season moves would you like the Texans to make? (Roster/FA)

They are going to have to hit their primary targets (**) with crazy money contracts while keeping the cap in mind. Those targets for me:

LT- Nate Solder** (5 Yrs 70M / 25M Guaranteed 2 Yrs)
RT- Seantrell Henderson (Vet Min Contract). **A very cheap investment to see if he can help bridge the position**
RG- Andrew Norwell** (5 Yrs 75M / 39M Guaranteed 3 Yrs)
LG- Sitton ** (4 Yrs 60M / 18M Guaranteed 2 Yrs)

RB- Blue (2 Yr 1.5M) **I like his chances of improvement behind a more dominant OL**

WR- Eric Decker (???- Reasonable) **Could be an inexpensive addition but very interesting**

DE- Muhammad Wilkerson** (2 Yrs 14M / 5M Guaranteed 1 Yr) **Could cover nicely at DE if Watt falters**
DE- Jared Crick (???- Reasonable) **Decent insurance since he knows the system**

CB- Jonathan Joseph (2 Yrs 10M). **Could shine again with a healthy Front 7**
CB- TJ Carrie (???- Reasonable). **Might like the idea of being a DB on this team, of course, due to its Front 7**

SS- Marcus Gilchrist (2 Yrs 5.5M). **Improves with better Front 7**

FS- Eddie Pleasant (2 Yrs 2.2M). **Improves with better Front 7**

Since I cut Kareem Jackson to free up Cap Space....I will try to re-sign cheap but there may be competition for his services. It's a risk worth taking.

DB- Kareem Jackson (2 Yrs 10M / 4M Guarnteed). **I'd try him at FS, then SS and let him CB last. My guess has always been that he would be a different player as FS**
Bump up the guaranteed $. There are players who have signed for more G. Why bring in has been like Crick? There are great FA at need positions so go big! I'm ok with Joseph but he needs to win job against CBs we bring in. Get him for lots less than $5 m per. I like Gilchrist but not Pleasant. He needs to be more than Special Team. Give someone else the opportunity.

I think Colts and Bears will go draft for needs versus FA. We know Chicago dumped Sitton.

The Colts guards are equally bad as Houston's and they have a QB coming off missing an entire year. They are going to be in the market if not the major competition for any offensive guard. You already answered your own Bears question.

Spot On

Gaine has quite a mess to clean up. If Watson stays healthy he can help cover a multitude of issues. If Gaine can hit on 3 FA's and a couple of draft picks the team can make the playoffs next season. That's if injuries dont decimate the team again.

So there's hope.
One thing I have noticed that posters dont seem to realize or just flat out choose to ignore; Tom Savage single handedly got the TEs and Receivers destroyed this past season. I know it wasn’t all his fault because our defense also suffered tough losses, but man! Savage threw the ball into triple coverage most of the time or to a receiver that had a safety or CB already rushing full speed at him. I hope he’s a goner, but maybe “knowing the system” will save his ass yet again.

Colts have 3rd and 36th and I would think they would trade down and pick up more choices from #3. They have ample ability to draft for the better Oline guys. My understanding is Bears need right tackle and again that can be corrected in first two rounds. I can see them using free agency for WR or even corner but the latter is deep in this draft. Just my two cents.

Let Miller run behind the Vikings, Cowboys, or even the Tacks’ offensive line and he’s a very different running back.
How? Is it going to make him stop cutting back into traffic? Is it going to make him stop giving up after first contact?

And I repeat the Colts have a QB that they are interested in keeping healthy, more cap room than the Texans and awful guard play. the move for them is probably to go hard after a free agent and potentially draft another guard. In fact, they actually have a good left tackle already probably plays to their advantage.

guys it is going to take some work besides we have a checkbook and Watson for the Texans. Other teams have needs, and money along with assets to build around.

and I repeat (lol) Colts can pick ready to start Nelson #3 or trade down and still get Hernandez who was really good at senior bowl. In a trade down scenario, if Nelson gone (Denver?) Colts could select Hernandez and still get RG Braden Smith at #39. Using their own 2nd plus another second from trade plus a 3rd from trade (Bears don't have a third) allows them to fill other needs. All three OGs I mention are starters in NFL.

This could definitely happen.

If Luck is healthy the Colts could be much improved pretty quickly.

Way overthinking and worrying about draft day trading. The Colts will work free agency first and then go about messing with this stuff you keep posting. The colts have both ends of off-season capital. They aren't going to ignore free agency to play fantasy GM in the draft.

I believe we all avid followers seen that crazy stuff too. I was like come on Tom, you'r getting the man killed.

Oh please God no. This guy is a complete shithead. I don't care if he's good. He's completely and utterly detestable.

You want church goers playing in the NFL, or do you want the best players in the NFL playing on Sunday's?

My only concerns right now are the Texans. Man bump the Colts. And of course they're set up nicely in the draft and free agency. Just like the Titans and the Jags. But look at how long it took those two franchises to get to where they are at. Also be mindful both can have major setbacks.

All we need is Mr. Great health on our side and We will be back. But much better if Watson continues his record breaking growth.

I’ve always thought the same thing! The dude is a hell of a player, but he’s probably 5x the dumbass Dj Swearinger was in our locker room. And we all remember how that panned out. I wonder if McNair and O’Brien would overlook that small little detail since he’s a hell of a lot better than Dj was though?

Another thing, I wonder how Talib would react if they asked him to help out on special teams? I’d take him over the truck load of waste we have now, I’ll admit that much.

Dion Lewis anyone?:

The veteran running back market typically doesn’t include players who draw extensive interest. This year, it could be different.

Patriots running back Dion Lewis is expected to get serious consideration from multiple teams, per a source with knowledge of the situation.

Potentially interested teams include the Jets, Texans, 49ers, Raiders, and Colts. As many as six or seven teams are expected to pursue Lewis.

A fifth-round pick of the Eagles in 2011, he arrived in New England after stints in Philly, Cleveland, and Indy. His best year by far came in 2017, with 896 rushing yards (an average of five yards per attempt) and 214 receiving yards. He had six rushing touchdowns and three receiving touchdowns.

I can see Watson recovering but Watt on the other hand not so much.

With Foreman possibly missing half of next season we might as well give Lewis a shot.

Do we acquire a #2 and #3 QB in free agency or the draft? I have seen little or no comment about the QB position. We need to draft one, but we need to sign a vet to be the #2.

One of the twitter tweets: "Tonight in Indianapolis, #Texans Head Team Physician Dr. Walter Lowe (@orthosport) was named the 2018 recipient of the Jerry “Hawk” Rhea Award, presented annually by @pfats_com to the most outstanding NFL team physician."

As my grandkids are so fond of saying "whatever".

Ralph Vacchiano of SNY, citing a team source, reports that the Giants are planning to pursue Panthers G Andrew Norwell in free agency.

According to Vacchiano, it could end up costing a team over $12 million per year to get Norwell under contract long-term. However, it sounds like the Giants aren’t scared off by this figure.

If the Texans want to fix their OL as a priority....this type of money for a player like Norwell can't scare them either.

As detailed as he was, I doubt that the exclusion of Quess was an oversight.

Smith no doubt would be a nice addition somewhere in the Texans organization.

.
After all he has endured Quess has become a favorite among many fans here. Hard not to root for the guy but circumstances are really against him.

The answers/ sugggestions that Smith gave indicate that he has quite a bit of knowledge about the Texans needs / shortcomings.

Hiring more former, qualified, players should be in the forefront for NFL teams. Scouts, coaches, front office. Lots of knowledge going to waste.

Shouldn't require a Rooney rule. Just smarter owners.

I don't care if Texans players go to church but I don't want them to be crooks, thieves, abusers or punks. I have no issue with players who smoke marijuana. I do have players who smoke marijuana knowing it is against NFL rules. Stupid is stupid and pretty much cancels football skills IMO. Cheating is wrong and the 11th Commandment is not "Thou shall not get caught".

An amazingly insightful interview with one of the most understatedly intelligent players we ever had.
First class article with lots of good questions by Stephanie (TC) and clear concise answers by Wade. I especially loved what Wade said about how critical it is that the coaches communicate what types of players they need to the scouts and GM. When picks don't work out it's not just a fail by the GM and scouts.

I guess this type of thing happens, but when you are paid extremely well to do a pretty easy and enjoyable job, it should be easy to do it well. In fact, so well, that you would be seen to be indispensable to the organisation.
It amazes me that people can treat such opportunities with such a lack of care. If I had a position like that, I guarantee you I would put my heart and soul into it - not just to preserve the income, but the job I love.
I suspect the NE Patriots have a pretty decent organisation in place, and the Texans (and the rest of the league) should be learning from it.

Teams are slowly dropping out of the Jarvis Landry sweepstakes after having interest before his agent was able to talk to teams.

I’m guessing they heard their asking price, laughed, and walked away.

With the #Eagles stocked at TE and dealing with cap considerations, free agent Trey Burton is expected to leave Philly. He had 16 teams check in on his status this week, and he’ll have a strong market.

9:58 AM - Mar 3, 2018

Trey Burton would be a real nice pickup. And cheaper than Graham and such.
I doubt that there will be that much difference between their new contracts..........Trey because of promise (still balanced against the unknown of first time starter..........Jimmy because of his injury history. I expect that both will sign for ~$7-8 million per year.

2018 NFL free agents to avoid
By Michael Renner • Mar 2, 2018

As free agency rolls around and we prepare to see the dollar bills flow, we want to do our best here at PFF to try and curb reckless spending. Buyer’s remorse is a phenomenon we all experience, but our discomfort over buying the wrong brand of toilet paper pales in comparison to owners and general managers eating millions of dollars to cut a guy one or two years down the road (although maybe not depending on how cheap you went). With that in mind, let’s take a look at the guys whose price tag we likely wouldn’t want to match in free agency.

Trumaine Johnson
Johnson has all the traits of an elite corner, and the fact that he was franchised twice already might suggest he is one, but nothing in our grading agrees with that evaluation. In fact, it can be argued that Johnson was the weak link in the Rams’ secondary at times last year. He gave up at least 79 yards in four separate games and his 759 yards allowed were fifth-most among all corners. He’s a solid starter, but is not worth near what he got paid the past two seasons.

Johnson-Career-Grades.jpg

AJ McCarron
Brock Osweiler, Mike Glennon, A.J. McCarron. Rinse. Repeat. There is nothing in McCarron’s 201 career dropbacks that suggests he’s ready to be a franchise quarterback. At the same time though, he wasn’t dreadful and hasn’t seen the field for a meaningful stretch of time in three years so he has to be better now, right? Right? The allure of potential at quarterback gets GMs all hot and bothered, but he was a fifth-rounder for a reason and has done nothing to change our minds on that.

Carlos Hyde
Kyle Shanahan’s system is built to make running backs look good. Running behind PFF’s sixth-ranked run-blocking, Hyde only managed a measly 3.9 yards per carry this past season. Sure, he’s flashed impressive games or stretches over the course of his career, but you better be a consistently dominant runner to make up for how bad Hyde is in the passing game. Last season he allowed more pressures (13) and dropped more balls (nine) than any other running back.

Dontari Poe
A thin defensive tackle market sees Poe as likely the second-best option available after Sheldon Richardson. He’s a fine player, but far from a difference-maker. After taking a one-year, $8 million ‘prove-it’ deal with Atlanta last year, he did just that. What he proved by earning the 35th-highest grade among defensive interior players is that he’s worth around $8 million a year and not the eight-figure per year deal he’s likely to get.

Kenny Vaccaro
Vaccaro is another player who has never been right since suffering a serious knee injury. The former first-rounder was a serious rookie of the year candidate before breaking his ankle in Week 15. His struggles came to a head this past season, where he allowed a career high 492 receiving yards after being moved more into the slot. Vaccaro once again ended his season on injured reserve, this time with a torn groin.

NaVorro Bowman
Multiple serious injuries have all but zapped the soon to be 30-year-old linebackers change of direction ability. He went from one of the league’s best all-around linebackers to now someone you’d rather have watching from the sidelines on third downs. He has five total pass breakups and interceptions over the past three seasons after averaging seven per year in the three seasons prior to injury.

IMG_02032018_094129_0.png

Nate Solder
This one is a matter of price tag. We’d be fine with Nate Solder starting at left tackle for us next season, but the fact of the matter is that every team with a poor left tackle feels the exact same way and there’s no other option in free agency. Solder is going to get top-dollar despite ever being close to a top tackle. The highest he’s ever graded out among all tackles as a pass blocker was 21st back in 2013 and he was 45th this past season.
THE REST OF THE STORY

Kevin Zeitler (Browns) and Osemele (Raiders) are already at $12 million per season. Norwell should easily get that type of money. Solder as LT should also get that. It's risky but we will have to overpay.
