What to do in 1st round?

Out of position for top 3 QB's, what should be 1st round strategy now?

Agreed. I am very excited about the state this organization is in, at this moment, if they are as determined as it appears to solve the quarterback issue... They have the following things working for them:

1. A lot of cap flexibility (after cutting some dead weight, they will likely be somewhere around $35 - $50 million below the cap): So, we can take on a high QB salary... it also means that we can fill a number of positional needs with quality free agents, allowing the team the option of trading away 2016 draft picks.

2. Significant combination of talent, youth, and depth throughout much of the defense. The defense has a few holes to fill, but it doesn't require an infusion of talent. Therefore, primary resources can be spent on offense: QB.

3. We still have all of our early round future draft picks.

4. In addition to a potentially rich free agent market for QBs (depending on what happens with Osweiler, Cousins, RGIII, Kap), teams with quality QBs are likely to be in the mood to listen to trade talks.

1. Who the hell are we going to sign at QB with all that cap flexibility? Sure, we can potentially make some good acquisitions, but that also requires good decision making. Have we improved in that regard at all in 14 years? No, we haven't. Regardless, that's not happening at QB this year. There is literally no above average QB that is attainable.

2. We don't have quality youth on our defense. JJ gives us a positive at DL, but Wilfork is old and nobody else qualifies with your statement. Our LBers are subpar. Our secondary is a mix of young (Hal, Kareem) and old (Joseph, Demps), and it's average, there is nothing special about the younger guys.

3. "We still have all of our early round draft picks." Well, I sure as hell hope so. This team doesn't have the talent to justify not. What kind of statement is this?

4. This is a poor FA QB market. Kap sucks, Cousins is likely to be resigned, as well as Osweiler. RG3 is a total shot in the dark.

I probably couldn't search for hours and find a post I more disagreed with.

I want a franchise QB right damn now. Will you take a Pringle for him?

Let's say we wanted to trade 1st round picks with the team that had #10. What would you give up to do that? Our 2nd rnd pick seems like a lot, though the chart would call indicate it was a bargain.

I'm with icak. I want one right now and if this COACH (not GM) wants to trade future picks for one, I'm all for it. You cannot survive in this league without an above average QB. Do what you need to acquire one, because without it you have literally zero shot.

Look at this year's playoffs. Palmer was a #1. Cam was a #1. Brady is maybe the best ever. Peyton is close to best ever and his backup was a high pick. You cannot win if you do not invest in this position.

It clearly matters what happens on draft day, but I'm seeing a lot of mocks that only have Goff going in the 1st, to Cleveland. I might consider taking RB Elliot at 22 then trading back onto the 1st or top of the 2nd for a QB. What do y'all think about that?

For who?

Which ever QB OB wants that's left on the board. I'm sure one of them will have a 1-2 round grade on them. I don't want Hackenberg, but other than that, I really don't care as long as it shuts up all of the "draft a QB in the 1st or 2nd round or I'm going to have a hissy fit" posts.

I'm perfectly fine seeing if the "developmental" 4th rounder from 2014 has developed as desired.

If by miracle Wentz, then absolutely. If Coker, I could buy it and have reason to be happy. Cook, and well, ok then.

Not much else in that window getting me excited.
I see all three of them all over the place in position rankings. The only two I see pretty consistent are Goff and Lynch at 1 & 2. I would also consider any QB drafted to be "developmental".

Not much. The best QB's will be long gone after round 1.

That really is all well and very good for those positional rankings. I also feel like some of them are often off their tit. I can only comment on what I've seen of players likely available.

Yes, our situation screams for the right QB. And it will take a higher position than even #10 to get him. Mock draft experts who show top prospects lasting beyond the 1st round are, IMO, plentiful but all wet. We will need at least the #3 pick, and should get it even if it costs 2 future #1's. #10 isn't worth spending very much to get.

So who are acceptable QBs to you? Sounds like only Goff and Lynch.

Get ready to be disappointed on moving into the top 3.

JD is a future bust but still has the potential to become a serviceable player in the future.
I say we trade him away now while he still has potential.

So here is the plan,
Trade: Jadeveon, our 1st our 2nd and our 2nd for next year

We get: top 5 pick

we get our star QB in the 1st, RB in the 3rd, ILB in 4th, TE/WR in 5th...

Wentz is my current favorite. And he won't last till #10, believe me.

Well now that you said 'believe me'...

So swami, where are those 3 QBs going before #10?

The only team in the top 10 I see taking a QB is Cleveland. 7 teams in the top 10 definitely will not take a QB. I think it highly unlikely either the Niners or Cowboys take one in the 1st.

I can see both taking a QB in the 1st. The Niner's have Kap and Gabbert at QB, so yeah, and the Cowboys saw what happens when you don't have that kid in the wings, being groomed for the job. That's not saying I think it's a sure thing, but I wouldn't be surprised, in the least, if they took a QB there.
I would say less likely with the 49'rs since Kelly now the head coach. That changes things a bit.

I remember back in 2014 we talked about how QBs were rated before the end of the season vs how they're rated after, when all the draft hype starts. Some were adamant about drafting Teddy Bridgewater because he was the #1 QB for the entire college season. Some were espousing Bortles before the mediots caught up.

Now, the situation looks like Goff & Lynch are rated 1 & 2 before all the draft hype & it appears Wentz is going to be the fast riser.

I can't imagine Rick Smith moving into the top 3. But if we were to, "acceptable" would have to be one of those three. Preferably Goff.

Now, I'm a Cook fan. Been a Cook fan since 2014, I'd be thrilled to get him & with the way talks are going sounds like we may be able to get him in the 2nd or later. I'm intrigued by Hogan, would love to have him on our roster.

But if we're going to give up what's needed to move into the top 3... it's got to be Goff, Lynch, or Wentz.

I think it's highly unlikely either will take a QB in the 1st. The 9ers gave Kaep that contract because they believe the potential is there. They've lost too much on defense to think they're a QB away. Bringing in Chip Kelly tells me they think they can fix Kaep.

The Cowboys think they can win a Super Bowl with Tom Bra... Tony Romo. They're going to pick a player to help make that happen. They'll probably take a developemental guy in the third, if that.

What is this top 3 talk? - 2 of the 3 teams will not be drafting QBs. Yes trades could happen, but that is so uncertain there is no point projecting it (although don't see Fisher as a coach who would endorse such a move).

Exactly, the Cowboys are in win now mode. I expect them to look at FA or trade for what they feel is a better veteran backup if Romo goes down.

Agreed.

I also feel that Chip will focus on a run heavy attack with Kap and Hyde, as he will actually have a dual threat QB. Kap probably isn't the future there but he can be worked with while Chip develops better receivers and defenders.

I do think the Rams and Jets will be looking for a QB. The Rams desperately need better play at QB and the Jets are probably done with Geno Smith.

Spinning off you...

It's funny to me how folks assume every team with an arguable need at QB will take one in the 1st and then here we sit with a desperate need at QB and tons of folks want to defer to later rounds.

That's the general comment. To yours, the Rams probably will get a QB but it's Fisher and I see them waiting to do so. The Jets have Fitz cheap for another year and not sure they have given up on Geno Smith. The one game he played this year he did much better.

I'm not assuming they will take one in the 1st, but I think it's more likely they do over other teams. If someone like Wentz is available around their pick, I would imagine a team looking to make a move for Wentz would have that in mind and look to move up ahead of them. I would.

Sure, but jumping to 12 is a whole lot less costly than top 3 top 6 like several suggestions running around.

I don't even think jumping into the top 6 is possible. We'd have to give up multiple future picks, most likely, and that assumes our trade partner actually wants that deal.

Timely article on the Jets - Link

Well our 1st and 2nd this year and 1st next year gets real close (50 pts under) - have to throw a 4th this year or 3rd next year. It's doable. But I don't think jumping Dallas is necessary.

The Rams and Jets are pretty QB needy and if one of the top 2 graded QB's fell to them, they'd be crazy not to take him. Both teams are similar to the Texans in needs.
Isn't it rather funny of you to assume that even though some teams are as QB needy as the Texans and one of the top rated falls all the way to 16 or 20 that a team isn't going to take that QB?
I'm working in NYC right now, and listening to sports radio around here, the fans are as ready to be rid of Geno Smith as we are to be rid of Hoyer. Of course, I know that means squat with the team, but why wouldn't getting a top tier QB prospect on the cheap, while having your stop gap in place, and also on the cheap, be a good move? It also allows you to save some face while you let Smith walk.

As for Fisher, he has to be pretty job scared right now and it might look like a win-win situation for him to get a top tier QB to groom and if he struggles, it could buy Fisher another year, whereas another down year with a struggling Nick Foles and no shiny new QB in the wings, Fisher's out fishing for a new gig.

Good article for this discussion. They may actually like Petty as well, I had forgotten he was there. Still, it's possible if a guy they had rated highly drops, as the article indicates.

What about the Saints? Brees is no spring chicken

That article tells me the Jets are in full blown smoke and mirrors mode.

I was just answering your question about who would be acceptable if we were to trade into the top 3.

Like I said though, I don't think it's in Smith's nature, or the Texans, to do so.

Well, there were a bunch of people saying we should have tanked the last half of the season.

Right or wrong, teams with aging greats usually try to put last pieces around him to make another run at the SB rather than spending high picks to sit until his departure.

And the Saints have desperate holes to fill

I agree. Just kind of thinking pout loud. They are more than a player or two away, imo, though. I bet they'd make a good trading partner.

You aint getting Goff or Wendt in round 2 .... and probably not Lynch either.

Don't want Hackenberg , that's just Savage V2.0.

Don't want any of the FA garbage either .... RG3 , Manziel , Bradford .... may as well have stuck with Fitz.

What's wrong with Savage Vpoint whatever? He might be the next OMG, How Was He Drafted There.

If Savage was worth a sh!t ... He wouldn't have spent the entire season on IR. He would have either had a roster spot or been designated for return.

Hackenberg .... is about as accurate as Mullet & Hoyer. QB's can improve in a lot of areas but accuracy usually isn't one of those where they take a great leap.

If you NEED a QB and you draft one , you draft one with potential to be a star , just mid round crap shoots.

If you HAVE a QB , that's when you draft mid & late round crap shoots .... you either strike out , have a solid backup or a guy who you can trade when the time is right.

In my opinion there are only two in this draft with stud potential - Goff & Wendt. This team NEEDS a QB desperately .... they need to do everything they can to go get one of those two guys.

Sure , those high draft choices can turn up craps too .... but the odds that they are serviceable or better are significantly better than their late round counterparts.

Unless the injury was more significant than we were told... gee, that would be out of character for the Texans though

If he wasn't worth a **** they could have stuck him on the PS and no big loss if another team grabbed him, right?

Is developmental just code for "we spent a draft pick on that position"?

What he said. IIRC, CnD mentioned the shoulder injury taking ~3+ months to heal and OB was damned proud of both Hoyer and Mallett at the time. This was about a week before Chiefs Debacle 1.0, so the decision to put Savage on IR made sense.

If he wasn't worth a **** they could have stuck him on the PS and no big loss if another team grabbed him, right?
I heard comments on the radio that this was indeed the case. They wanted to insure he was protected and he would not have been, on the PS.

I know the thought has been around going young stud prospect in the draft, and no one seems too excited about the usual FA suspects, but is it even possible to work a trade with Detroit? Draft picks for Stafford? Dude just had a 67%, 4300 yards, 32 TD/13 INT, 97% rating year and it wasn't even his career best in several of those categories. Other than having to acquire via trade, because Detroit may be unwilling, is it just a matter of possibly wanting more than we are willing to give? Former 1:1 with proven stats and playoff appearances. Just too expensive? Honest questions.
