Week 16 - Visiting the Bucs

Did they tough? That dude was throwing balls no one should ever throw in an NFL game. I don't watch a lot a Tampa Bay football, but that was some of the worst reads and going ahead and throwing that I've seen in a while.
He missed on three TD passes as well. If he had his primary weapons in this game, he might have been the guy throwing 5 TDs a game.

The game may still be a little fast for him. Another season under Arians & he'll be a beast.

Its suckery like that causing @steelbtexan to think the way he does.

We should literally have 3 more TDs then we do.
I'm glad I didn't waste my time in the gameday thread yesterday.

Everything I posted before was there to see plain as day.

Nothing has changed, the QB play isn't good enough and BOB constantly running up the middle on 1st down was infuriating.

Had a much better day talking football with family/friends.

Then you should be rooting for the Texas to lose and fail based on what you're saying. They just got a quality win that they had to get to end the season so that they could have options next week and possibly rest players if they want to. They executed enough to get that W. If that's something to make you pout then you should really be rooting for them to lose so the franchise can get blown up. That's all you're clamoring for any way.

They did against Tennessee/Tannehill last week in their house while he was playing like one of the hottest QB's in the league.
He does root for them to lose.

Tampa has a really good team minus bad Jameis.

They managed to control a Hot Tacks/Tannehill team

There's progress from the defense whether some on this MB want to admit it or not.

Now is the QB improving? I think we all know the answer to that question.

C'mon steelbtexan.....you forgot one additional but major question:

Is OB improving with his game management, time-out usage, play-calling or in-game adjustments? You and everyone else on this board knows the answer.....a resounding no. This is OB at the tail-end of his 6th season as HC and OC for the Texans and he's still making the same piss-poor mistakes he made in season one....game one. Can anyone identify what he did different in this game?

OB made mistakes, every HC does. Bad QB play was what made the team look so pathetic yesterday. Just like all teams when they get bad QB play.

For instance, I thought Arians called a great game yesterday but Jameis stunk worse than DW4 so hence the Texans got the W.

steelbtexan

Now that Rick Smith is out of the picture, time to excuse OB because of DW4?.... really?...
Nope, BOB needs to go too.

But the HC wont matter, until DW4 improves on the things I've listed the Texans aren't winning a SB, if he plays as badly as he has this last month they aren't winning a playoff game. Although I'm sure that will ALL be BOB's fault.

ROO

Tweak the offense already!
I'm super excited about the playoffs and very happy about winning another division title but with this game at this point after what we've seen this year it's crystal clear that O'Brien's offense is a total ******* failure for the 6th straight year. We've been winning games despite of O'Brien's lame dick offense because of the talent on the team. I think his roster moves this offseason turned out to be good but he's failed as a head coach, this team really should be way better. I'm saying that as I look at what Harbaugh has done with Lamar Jackson in Baltimore, in this day and age in the NFL this Houston Texans offense with Deshaun Watson should be way ******* better than this. Unless he can take this team beyond a second round playoff game I say it's definitely 100% time to move on from Bill O'Brien. We have seen all he has to offer at this point and I got to believe there is SOMETHING better out there somewhere.
:goodpost:
That sums up my feelings 100%.

Wow thanks, I appreciate the fact that you're not blindly supporting OB anymore!

DW4 has obvious issues, but with a HC capable of taking these issues into account I think he can excel. Play to his strengths, not his weaknesses. :)

I wanted RS/BOB out at the same time. I just dont think BOB/DW4 are going to win a championship together. Or DW4 will ever win one unless he vastly improves.

OB was burying his offense by his incessant running plays for no gain on 1st down. Nothing worse than telegraphing your offense to the defense......2nd and 3rd and long will knock your offense off track pretty fast against a strong front 7. Why did he keep doing this to his offense?

In OB's own words.....he knows he screwed the pooch and must get better......as usual.

This. So much this. When we consistently are putting our guys behind the sticks you get hero ball from Watson. How the hell our coaches don’t recognize this and call a more balanced attack is beyond me. OB is so stubborn in every decision he makes. I hate him. Can’t wait until the day he is fired.

Lol! at the typical extremists in here who jump on and off their extremes every other week.

All of these people are angry because they further wrapped up their division against a tough Titans team that got really hot at the right time of the year down the stretch and beat them in their own house and then beat another team in their own house. Not exactly a time to be angry and pouting all over the Texans team this season.

And who really thought this was a SB team in the first place? They didn't build one in the off season. Are you all forgetting that they lost their GM after he did nothing and then lost their wannabe GM in Nick Cesario so that OB could become mover and shaker right before the season started? This was not a SB roster before this season started. Overall, they're right about where they should be potential wise. I'll give them that. They got strong wins against NE and Tennessee to end the year which really helped them down the stretch. They're improving on one win from last season so that is slight regular season progress. Will they do major damage in the playoffs? I don't expect them to, but I wouldn't count them out either. If its a close game Watson to DHOP is a hard combination to stop for any team. They're going to be a dangerous team to face, that's for sure.

I'm with you until the last two sentences. Against Denver Hop was target 13 with 7 catches 54 %. Versus TB 9 targets with 5 catches @ 55.6 %. He did convert those to 120 yards--because he is Hopkins but against TB had only 9 targets 5 catches 23 yards total. The game indicates he is doing his part but the missed targets are on the QB. Game one N.O. he got 13 targets 8 catches for 8.54 per. He then had only 8, 7, 8, 8 through the Atlanta game and then avg 12 targets with high accuracy through game nine; then against Baltimore 12 with 7 catches 58.3% but yards per reception was 11.5. When he gets targets he either gets yardage or yards per catch. 610 was talking today about Hopkins no longer going deep. Some of that is on OBrien trying to help OLine but when I see ball going all around #10 but not in his catch radius--I have to look at QB.

Anyone hear anything about Hopkins and the flu effecting him? Maybe he was a Shell of himself and a decoy, and with a 70% DHOP and no Fuller things were out of sync. Nuk would never admit it, but maybe he was still suffering

I took that into consideration But doesn't explain Denver then Titans where he was 6 of 8 targets but 120 yards and 20 per catch. In the last five games he was seeing the usual targets of around 8 but his catches were very low. Watching the game, he caught the balls he could so I am not condemning him. If OBrien/Watson is going to limit his targets they need to stop throwing ridiculously short routes. Stills had two TDs versus Tennessee and Carter had 2 for 44 yds IIRC Sunday. How come no emphasis on these guys? I hear that Carter has been in bowwow house but Stills only 9 targets? If Hop wasn't getting it done should not Watson utilyze Stills?

I still say it’s a scheme issue. We don’t use our TEs or RBs like we should. It’s always been like that. So I don’t believe it’s Watson’s inability to do it. OB is just that bad at play calling and design.

If some folks are willing to take the blame off OB's shoulders for these piss-poor offensive performances.....then those same folks should be in full agreement with trading Watson right now, while he still has tremendous value.

He's obviously not smart enough to run OB's offense to any kind of consistent success so why keep him around since OB has pure winner written all over him. At this rate OB will eventually find himself "his" Tom Brady 2.0 and Houston fans can start counting on SB appearances and victories. That's right, OB's that good......he just hasn't had chance to show it b/c he's always been straddled with bad or stupid QB's.

Trade Watson to get inside the first six or eight picks and he might be able to draft the kid out of Oregon. Give him 2 seasons of OB's magical QB development skills and we as fans can probably celebrate the first numerous Lombardy Trophy's residing at Kirby.

If the players OB inherited are the reason he hasn't been able to hit his ultimate success.....then trade off the dead wood, gain the picks, alleviate the salary cap stress and hand the draft to OB so he can finally build his team. Anyone think he could his SB winner with pick and cap assets? Just curious.

There was a time when I thought the same thing.

But I let go of the hate.

It makes less sense to me that play calling goes from one extreme to another on a week to week basis. & more sense that our trigger man doesn't trust his eyes.

That doesn't take O'Brien off the hook. As OC he has to present the game plan to Watson in a way to encourage him to trust what he sees.

First game against NE, Baltimore, KC I can see a bad game from the young'n. But game two we should be more competitive.

We've already seen game two against NE & KC. I'm looking forward to game two against Baltimore.

We're 6 years....not 2, 3 or 4....but 6 years into OB's dynasty and we can still identify the same sideline mistakes that we remember seeing him make in his very first game / season.....not to mention the outdated and predictable game plan that he rolls out each and every game come hail or high water. He's not progressing Watson....he's stagnating Watson and the potential of this offense.

We need to go back to Watson's rookie season & count all the plays he's made from the pocket. From then until now.

I'm betting he's made more plays from the pocket in the last three months than from his first game to week 4 of this season.

No way is Watson that inconsistent. BOB has fielded the same team every season he’s been here in terms of inconsistency and terrible schemes. Watson wasn’t the reason our scheme is inconsistent. BOB has zero feel for calling a game. It’s like he’s playing Madden and just picking one of the 3 suggested plays. The fact our game plan was to force the run on first down against the number 1 run defense tells you all you need to know about this coaching staff. I’m convinced OB calls ridiculous plays just so he can call something to “counter” it later in the game to “fool” the defense. The problem is it doesn’t work. Defenses are on to it. Even the play that was discussed up thread where you said Watson didn’t trust his eyes and should have unloaded the ball. You had 3 wide outs running to the same general area like 12 yards down field. No one was looking for the ball when Watson’s back foot hit because they weren’t far enough into their routes yet. The play is just flawed from the start. Defenses need to be hit at multiple levels. Not deep all the time.

i am not disagreeing on scheme or that HC called play; I'm saying why did Watson miss so many targets? TB alone he sailed several. Darn if I can figure out how that is OBrien or OLine.

Speaking only for me, you begin with misconception first sentence. I and others have repeatedly said Obrien bears some responsibility. I have said I want OBrien gone. I think Watson is smart enough but I just don't like his skills in this offense.. I've posted before I can see him telling CAL after season over how he could have taken this team to SB if he had his QB and Watt (back in 2020). If he could attain that guy (Gordon) plus picks and one or two players for the package I've mentioned, CAL should at least listen. The Texans are the team not one or two players that fans wish the fan could be.

We don't know if OBrien can develop a young, skilled draft QB that "fits" his idea. Burrows has Bengals harpoon dug so deep he will be signed 30 seconds after hearing "with the #1 pick...". It is being spoken of that Derek Carr could be available, if I were Miami I would think I could get him for their middle round one # 19 and their round two pick (36ish). Carr will be 29 & under contract three more seasons with reasonable $ that is relatively non GTD. I see him as a better fit with Dolphins than Vegas. I think Gruden wants a Lamar Jackson type and that is Watson. Of course, Gruden could trade Derek and draft Jalen Hurts with that same selection he gets from Miami but he knows what he gets with #4. I think he could be salivating at thought of playing Watson.

I am not denigrating what Watson has done but what he still cannot do here is my concern. O'brien has changed his offense some to fit #4 despite what folks say. That has benefited Watson but that "what he still does wrong" is glaring. It is obvious that McNair's brought Bill O'Brien here for his plan and ideas of turning Houston into a New England. Most of the moves HC has made like bringing in a playmaking, blocking TE in Fells fits that mould. His moves to bring in Hyde & Duke & Stills also fits. He can say "CAL, look what I've done record wise with a QB that doesn't fit my scheme..if only..". There are at least two QBs (Anthony Gordon and Eason) available in round two that seem perfect. Extra picks/players only strengthen team. If McNair is not firing HC I hope he listens to him as I'm sick of how we play now.

I'm of the camp that a decent-to-good coach shouldn't have to re-scheme massively for every game and his team should be able to impose their will a good percentage of the time. Sure, you make adjustments, but you don't drop out components of your prior success completely.

I don't see that under O'Brien. I see games where the TE is integral, and stretches of games where it's a non-factor altogether. Same goes for tiered passing lanes. One game we'll have receivers at three levels, the next everything is deep-or-bust. By the same token, most if not all of the off-season moves (especially in FA) have been extremely beneficial.

I keep waiting to see TEs who can be coached up to block (looking at you Akins), an OL that can stand against a 4-man rush all day, and an uptempo offense more than once in a blue moon...and can switch to it at will.

We're going to have to agree to disagree here. The picture I posted was a step after the ball should have been thrown.

I've mentioned three other plays that would have changed our perception of the game had they been properly executed.

Maybe those plays were to far & inbetween but that's a different story.

Correct and why I want HC gone, I just will be shocked if he goes. I think he still has CAL thinking OBrien is going to take us to Patriot level..just needs a NE type QB. It doesn't have to be Brady 2.0 just a Brady type of which we can get in draft if #4 traded.

I'm not convinced Watson doesn't fit.

He was not experienced in as "pro" a system as we want to run, & that shows. But like I said he's winning more & more from the pocket.

Bringing in Carl Smith says this is the direction we want to move in.

No, I want to get rid of OB and bring in a HC and staff that better understand how to get the most out of their franchise QB.
......by adapting their offensive gameplan to better fit Watson's skill-set. I know some of you refuse to look at the success Watson had in his first 6 games b/c after that, teams had film on Watson and adjusted. That's wrong b/c OB didn't run that type of offense when Watson returned......instead he wanted to make Watson fit into his scheme, so he removed the playbook that put up those crazy offensive numbers and points and reverted back to his plodding and predictable offense which managed to cut those offensive numbers by 40%.

The league has plenty of film on the Ravens Jackson.....yet he's getting stronger each and every week and teams aren't figuring him out. There's a reason though, Harbaugh was smart enough to stick with what made his QB tick....novel idea that may lead to the Ravens and Jackson hoisting the Lombardi Trophy this year and competing for many more while the Texans, OB and Watson try to do just enough in the AFCS so OB can win the Division and offer excuses later for their failures come time for the playoffs.

IMO, the thing that really sets Baltimore apart is the multiple ways they approach the run game.

You've got to be extremely disciplined on defense to stop them from picking up 10 yards in 4 downs & they have a tendency to go for it on 4th downs.

They run power O, stretch, zone... option from multiple formations, then throw in the RPO.

& while Jackson has been able to thread some amazing passes through tight windows a great many of his throws are to wide open receivers.

It is difficult for a defense to defend when they have to play honest.

It does not matter what we think I'm saying it could be what O'Brien thinks and convinces Mcnair. We know HC says that he has not opened up his entire Playbook. Suggests to me he does not think Watson can handle.
