Vince Wilfork to Houston - **signed**

just as in only, not as in recently. I'm pretty sure that Pappas took over the Luthers chain when they ventured into BBQ. But perhaps it was just their former locations.

It's been a decade. And Pappas BBQ has been around forever.

Personally I hate chain BBQ joints. The only one I will frequent is spring creek and that's only b/c they have decent bread for the bbq sandwich.

Original location on Brooklyn or at the Casino? What type of meat?

Certain BBQ places have their specialties. For Brisket, Oklahoma Joes would be the best choice.

Did you really ask if Houston had good BBQ? That question will get you shot in some parts of the city. :cowboy1:

Gatlin's is pretty damn good. Their pork ribs are almost as good as mine. http://gatlinsbbq.com/

You can't do chain BBQ joints. If they don't ever run out of BBQ then it's not real BBQ.

Cooking raw meat over an open flame actually started with the caveman. Not only did the meat taste better but it was much easier to digest. As a result the caveman needed less intestines and a smaller intestinal tract to digest their food. The evolutionary trade off with the additional protein allowed early humans to develop bigger brains. One of the more important evolution developments of modern humans.

Bigger brains led to the discovery of fermentation and the making of beer which then led to smaller brains but happier cavemen right?

Chains serve a perfectly legitimate purpose. They sell what I think of as "BBQ placebo" which sometimes you need because (as has been already pointed out) truly good BBQ places sell out pretty much daily so there are times when you want BBQ but you can't get BBQ so, if it so happens that you cannot wait then you go to Rudy's, Pappas, or Goode Co., or Spring Creek (in a pinch) and you get yourself some "BBQ" to hold you over until you can get the real thing.

I shoot back.

Next time I am in the big town I will look up Gatlins. After I tried Pappas and another hole in the wall in Spring Branch, I didn't want to roll the dice anymore. I googled, but didn't do any good.

I love when people from outside of Texas try to tell me we eat beef ribs.

Last time I was at Franklin BBQ they were doing beef ribs. They were friggin enormous too and ridiculously expensive. Big ol' Fred Flintstone dino-ribs and I think just one of them was like $46 ($22 a pound) which I declined to pay. No point in it since for that price I could get the best brisket I've ever had and eat every bit of it.

Original Location - Brisket. On a Tuesday, I think. Even then I to wait a bit.

You know what happens?

A business gets so popular that they get lazy and quality suffers. I can imagine the Brisket getting dry there. Sometimes I get the impression that the staff doesn't care at that location. I normally get the sausage sandwich, but have had the beef also.

Next time try Joes Kansas City or this new place Q39.

Yeah, but...

Its very difficult to find tough or meat not cooked right in KC.

Didn't Pappas just buy out Luthers?

Luther's Bar-B-Q fading as Pappas takes over
By David Kaplan, L.M. Sixel | May 6, 2006

Pappas Restaurants decided to acquire the Houston chain because "it was for sale," Pappas said. "We've been in the barbecue business for a long time, and we thought it would be a way to grow our barbecue business."

...
Pappas acquired 19 Luther's sites in Houston, Beaumont and Louisiana, but six have closed because of hurricane damage, Interstate 10 expansion and other considerations, Pappas said.

Before the acquisition, Pappas had six barbecue restaurants in the Houston area.

With all the talk about BBQ and fat guys, I thought I should point out that Vince's foundation supports diabetes research.

From his foundation website: http://www.vincewilfork75.com/
TEXT VINCE TO 50555 FOR A $10 DONATION TO SUPPORT MY FOUNDATION. RAISING FUNDS FOR DIABETES RESEARCH. THANK YOU!

According to the Houston Texans' roster, none of our new guys have numbers. Is the jersey manager on spring break?

I grew up in KC, love KC BBQ (and Texas BBQ too - loving one doesn't mean you have to dislike the other), love numerous KC BBQ restaurants, but I think Bryant's sucks. I honestly haven't been to Pappas for years (and for the record, it's a family name, and has nothing to do with adding and extra "P" and an "s" to Papa), but I always viewed Luther's as the McDonalds of Barbecue. Judging a city's barbecue on that would be like judging a city's burgers on Mickey D's.

I'll throw in Jack Stack and Gates (if you require your BBQ place to be both historical and divey).

You might be right, but maybe we should all get together for BBQ and talk about Vince Wilfork.

April 25th I'm heading to Lockhart for some Smitty's with a bunch of friends and if anyone wants to come along or meet me there come get some.

That includes Vince Wilfork. If you're out there and you want some BBQ you are absolutely invited.

Yeah, but...

I said its difficult to find bad KC BBQ implying that not every place is perfect. Even the most popular places drop the ball. Not every day is a 10. The majority of the time you will be satisfied with the quality.

Ive personally never had a bad experience at Bryants, but looking at things from Marshalls perspective, I have noticed signs that lead me to believe what he is telling me.

The Lankford Grocery has the burger.

I will 2nd this. The wife and I drive from Pearland once every other month for their burgers. Cash only and very very reasonable prices for what you get in return.

Great people too

Breakfast isn't shabby either.

Better go hungry.

Agreed but I think it should stay in this forum. It's "The Official Derailed Thread of the Texans Talk Forum" and we should always have at least one.

AKA the Official WTF Else is There to Talk About - Texans Offseason thread.

PS - Lankford does have great burgers.

How many chopped beef sandwiches could Wilfork throw down? I think 4 is doable.

On that note I wonder what his daily caloric intake is. I've read some stories on what OL eat during the season and I was shocked.

My nephew is playing DT for the Rice Owls and he says when he's training he's putting in 10,000 calories a day!

Mods, in all seriousness, the way this thread has been infiltrated with BBQ posts, the ability to perform searches for legitimate information on topic has been screwed up royally.

What's to search? It's a thread full of on-topic bickering about whether he will sign and whether old players should be signed.

In any event, this one stays but we will crack down on derailment occurring in other threads.

With the characters that post on this board? I'm glad I don't have your job. LOL

That's nice. I've seen the one called 'NFL Films Presents' New England Patriots defensive lineman Vince Wilfork before, but it is great to see it again through the lens of him being a Texan.

If VW can consistently command double-teams, I can only imagine the opportunities that this will give J.J. Watt. It's got to be as exciting for him as it is for J.J.!

With Watt and Wilfork commanding the attention of (at least) four of the offensive lineman, it is too bad the Texans don't have any linebackers who can wreak havoc.

I've read the entire thread, just haven't posted, so here's an on topic post.

I'm pumped about the signing. Is it possible that Wilfork could somehow make JJ Watt even better. Like is that even humanely possible? I'm thinking Watt may have more one on one opportunities.

And Cushing should also be a happy man, but is he washed up? We need at least one ILB and one OLB out of this draft if possible.

It'll stop the triple teams and four layer protections against him...

Agree on upgrading LBs.

Adjusted Salary Curve Fit (GUESS)

$3M Signing Bonus
$2M 2015 Base and other bonuses
$4M 2016 Base and other bonuses

Why don't you just look it up on spotrac or overthecap instead of guessing?

His base is $1 mil this year but there is also a $1 mil roster bonus.

Yeah, I've done them myself. They're awesome, and IMO better than brisket since there is a lot of fat that renders away, while having the same basic taste as brisket. But you're right, they're pricy even if you do them yourself.

I'm very curious about what the Texans plan to do at LB. There has been no activity, and in a 3-4 defense, they are kinda' important.

I assume they'll be drafting, but then you just have rookie(s). No matter how much potential, they are still rookies in a less-than-simple defensive scheme.

No, the Texans right now are very cloaked in secrecy about LB plans, but we'll have to wait and see what happens between now and training camp before freaking out about it. In RAC we trust.

I will say this:

I went to Kansas City on a trip with some friends solely for the BBQ and it was probably the best food I've ever had in my life. The beans from LCs might be the most flavorful, delectable consumable item on the planet.

I look forward to having more Texas BBQ and Memphis/Carolina too. I only visited Dallas when I was much younger and don't remember going to a down-and-dirty BBQ restaurant. Either way I have no doubt that it's all life-changing good.
