UNDRAFTED FAs POST 2025 DRAFT

Wow! 3 concussions isn't good. I do like that he is known for run blocking as we definitely need that. Thanks for the info!
When you are essentially 6'9" tall, if your head takes a simple fall and hits the ground from that height, birdies can tend to sing.

dizzy-seeing-stars.gif

defensive tackles clobbering offensive linemen and tackling running backs would tend to hit the ground frequently. 6 ft 9 TEs weighing 270 lb hopefully should see the ground much less often. Can you imagine what it takes to force one of those guys to the ground? I'm thinking more likely that he was off balance or committing a block and was hit. The ground must have shaken that day!

I spoke to a person I know who has followed him since his days at Klein HS. Interestingly enough, he has confirmed that Tharp is actually just under 6'9" tall (after having grown two inches during his time as a Red Raider). The 250 lbs in this article is also not correct. He put on serious weight to tip the scales at 270 pounds, 45 pounds heavier than he weighed as a recruit. Also interesting is that prior to taking up with Texas Tech, he was given offers from the Arizona Wildcats and the Michigan State Spartans!

He has been known more for his run blocking prowess................something that the Texans have lacked for decades.

Injury history (with loss of 9 games) have been a concern. His specific injuries have essentially been kept under wrap. However, I have managed to find out that while at Texas Tech before the 2023 season, he had already suffered 3 significant concussions.

I found an article that very well reviews Tharp and includes some very interesting video clips.

2025 NFL DRAFT SCOUTING REPORT: TEXAS TECH TE MASON THARP

I like this young man. I hope with time and a lot of effort, he can develop into a real Texans weapon while avoiding injury.
Not going to lie, my first thought was, can he add 30 pounds and play tackle.

Not saying that is the plan, but just a thought.

I'm ready to get some guys in here that can block. Sign me up for this guy and Lachey, they at least will make an attempt to block. Bite the bullet and cut Schultz/Jordan.

Only a trade will bring significant cap space on Schultz. I think they are convinced that our new OC can get him back to his 2023 play.

I dont care about the cap space, that's why I said to go ahead and bite the bullet.

Makes him like 9 or 10ft tall with his arms up. If he can catch. Nobody is going to out reach him
ikr earlier mentioned that he has some 4.6ish speed.
I found this interesting article about the various roles other than height of tight ends.

At his height, he would need to weigh in at least 325 lbs...............a 55 lb weight gain. Detroit's OT Dan Skipper measured in at just under 6'10" and 330 lbs. He has been on almost every team's PS (:)).............including the Texans in 2019 is why I remember him. Eagles OT Jordan Mailata measured 6'8" and 365 lbs. Green Bay's (now Patriots PS) Caleb Jones 6'9" 370 lbs. Trent Brown 6'8" 359 lbs. Cam Robinson 6'6" 335 lbs.

Essentially for an NFL OT to have a solid base at heights like the above, they have to have heavy anchoring weight.

I'll have to checkout his pass blocking, although I will bet there's not much film on that.
Two sites give Tharp a pass blocking score average-to-below average (like most NFL TEs).:

NEONSPORT.COM
CFB.FAN

I doubt that you find any real sample of useful clips to that end. I would take any of his pass blocking evaluations with a grain of salt since he was primarily utilized as a blocker in a run-first Texas Tech offense.

I think he very well could make the roster. The height and length is from another planet. If he can't play TE I'm sure he can fit into some role. And yes, add some weight and play OL maybe DE? He sure has the frame to do something. 4.6 40, so not real slow either. Some position no question he can play (if TE is not in the cards).

Texans are working out Bengals (I think FA) RB Chris Evans this week. He played with Mixon. Drafted out of Michigan in 2021, 5' 11" 217lbs 4.5 40 sounds like a great idea as a goal line or early down thumper vs big DL teams. 4.5 isn't slow (Arian Foster was 4.5 something) and 217 is a good weight

You just know the bargain bin DTs will work out under DeMeco.

Speaking of UDFAs… who is the biggest UDFA “hit” under Caserio so far? I’m thinking DT Kurt Hinish. He’s a guy you always want to upgrade from but he has been a 35-40% snap player since arriving in 2022. And the Texans thought enough of him to use one of their two preseason IR designations on him when he was injured in camp last season to give him time to return to play in a deep DT room and provide 35% snaps. Not a lot of stats out of him but he plays hard every snap and can disrupt as a rotational DT.

I’ve expected him to get beaten out for a roster spot each of the last three years and he keeps finding a way to make the team.

Because he has that dog mentality. You can be gifted, out right better, but you WILL NOT out work a guy like him

I hope he can develop into some effect position in time. But I will point out that if he has to gain at least 55 lbs to play a position, his mobility numbers will be significantly affected.

Another example, Charlie Heck that the Texans finally gave up on. 6'8" and 311 pounds. I think he started his college career as a TE before they moved him to OL. Charlie is the son of Andy Heck, OL coach for KC Chiefs

Oh I know I am a personal trainer. I would rather have him go to DE IF he can't play TE. He would have to add muscle but seeing his weight is not accurate (ranges from 241 to 260) he likely would have to add say 15 to 20lbs. Meaning he will still have a lot of explosion and mobility.

Cox, Ossai, Jackson and Tafuna all interest me. Huzzie is a good red shirt lotto ticket option.

Seth Payne just did a breakdown of Daniel Jackson on his members only stream tonight (.99/month and more content. Great value for Texans addicts). I like the way Jackson fights for yac despite being a smaller framed guy. Not as athletic as Noel but has the same knack for making himself available to his QB, which I suspect was a point of emphasis of the team this offseason.

Wilson also mentions former Bengals RB Treyveon Williams was brought in for a tryout in addition to RB Chris Evans:

His most recent "official weight" was obtained on 3/19/25, on Texas Tech's Pro Day was 264 lbs. As an NFL DE at his height, he will still need to weigh ~320 lbs.

Maybe it’s the Beetlejuice eye mascara?

If I was moving this guy to DE….I’d be going for the JJ Watt strength and conditioning method. Put 26 pounds of muscle on his frame and let him play at 290 pounds.

In all reality, I’d like to see the Texans strength and conditioning coaches get him stronger and leaner where his play weight is around 255 lbs. At 6-9, 34” Arms, 10 1/4” Hands, and a 33.5” Vertical….this would be a Red Zone weapon in the making or about a 13 foot high point target. Working on a slide catch would make for an interesting twist on defenders.

I’m really beginning to like “Steelers Depot” for prospect breakdowns.

I have been using Steelers Depot for some time and agree it is a very good source.

JJ was 6'5" and played at 290 lb. It is not realistic for a 6'9" DE to play effectively and with durability at the same weight.

Doc, let's just bulk him up like the 2 DTs the Jags had a while ago. Both were like 6' 5" 320+ and nobody was running up the middle 😆

Henderson (6' 7" 335lbs)and Stroud (6' 6" 310 listed, more 320s) now I remember the names. That front was crazy. Both were All Pro and both could actually move, not just eat space. So, at 6' 8" 310-ish for DE might not be needed. True, it would be to scale with typical 6' 3" to 5" DEs however, 290's would be fine. Look at the draft, Jackson is 6' 7" (listed) 280. Will play around high 290s to 300 at DE/Edge

Color me very skeptical that Jackson will have much success in transitioning to the NFL with the weights you purport.

That's what he is listed as. And Atlanta had a DE that was 240-something that was amazing. Issue was he got hurt and never came back like he was before. He had double digit sacks as a rookie

Only time will give us the individual course he takes, but as I previously posted, weight to height ratio is typically an important factor in DE success and durability. Of course, there will always be an exception to the rule, although I would not bet the farm on an exception.

Caserio mentioned Daniel Jackson as a name to watch. I’ve been watching more film on him recently and think he might find a role on this team beyond PS year one if he can play ST. He played every WR position at Minnesota and led the team in receiving 3 straight seasons.

He projects as a slot at the NFL level due to size. His 4.6 40 isn’t great but he has a faster 3 cone and 20 yard shuttle than Jaylin Noel. He ranked 4th and 2nd among all WRs at the combine in those drills. Also, he’s a tough runner after the catch and fights for every yard. Playing style reminds me of that little Welker fella coming out minus the return value on ST.

This kid has some skills watch some film on him.

And not an UDFA, but we resigned Myles Bryant.
