Hampton DT Chris Baker is entering the 2009 NFL draft:

Sources close to Hampton DT Chris Baker have said that he plans to enter the 2009 NFL Draft after receiving a 4th round grade from the NFL Advisory Board. Baker, 6'2, 298 pounds, is a former Penn State standout who had been kicked off the team after facing charges after two separate fights involving Nittany Lions football players and other students on April 1 and Oct. 7, 2007. He pleaded guilty to two counts of misdemeanor assault and criminal trespass, received two years of probation and paid $2,500 in restitution. Baker followed this setback by landing at Hampton where he received a second chance and earned 1st team All-MEAC honors after collecting 69 tackles, 16.5 tackles for loss, 8.5 sacks, 13 quarterback pressures, and one blocked field goal this year.

Great idea for a thread like this. Keep in mind these players still have the option to withdraw from the draft. I forget when the deadline is, but I think it's like 4 weeks before the draft (so long as they havn't signed an agent)?

this is the one I've been expecting & wanting. I know the Texans are pretty set @ WR but if Nicks is available in the 2nd I can't imagine a better player available?

North Carolina wide receiver Hakeem Nicks said Monday he will forego his final year of collegiate eligibility and enter the 2009 NFL Draft. A 6-1, 210-pound junior, Nicks set UNC single-season records in 2008 for receiving yards (1,222) and touchdowns (12). In his final game against West Virginia in the Meineke Car Care Bowl, he caught eight passes for a UNC-bowl record 217 yards and three touchdowns. “I have decided to file the paperwork necessary to enter the 2009 NFL Draft,” said Nicks. “I met with Coach (Butch) Davis after the game and I appreciate the feedback he gave me and the support he has provided during the decision-making process. His contacts in the NFL are invaluable.”

Eric Norwood did declare, but changed his mind. He is going back to school.
 
Southern Mississippi junior linebacker Gerald McRath to enter NFL draft

Southern Mississippi junior linebacker Gerald McRath said Sunday night that he will enter the NFL draft.

"I've graduated with a degree in sports administration and business and now I want to work my butt off for the pros," McRath said from his Georgia home.

McRath, 6-foot-3, 220 pounds, can play inside or outside linebacker. He is a Conference USA defensive player of the year winner and a two-time first-team all-conference selection.

McRath had 127 tackles, two forced fumbles and two recovered fumbles this season. He has 386 tackles, 32½ tackles for loss and eight sacks in his career.

"I'm a unique player who can bring a lot of speed," McRath said.

Southern Mississippi ended the season with a 30-27 overtime victory over Troy in the R+L Carriers New Orleans Bowl.

If he does not sign with an agent and decides to return for his final season, McRath must submit a letter informing the NFL of his intentions by midnight on Jan. 18.

He was drafted by the White Sox in 03, I think. I beleive he graduated in 02?

2006Retired from pro baseball at the end of the 2006 baseball season and sent out inquiries to a number of schools, including Rice, where his former HS teammate (Dustin Hufsey) was on the team and forwarded his information on to the coaching staff.

According to Channel 13 he's already in the classroom at Rice for the current Spring semester.

I believe that's the main reason that he declared for this draft. His stock is very high after catching 111 passes and scoring 21 total TDs this year, there isn't much more for him to prove. He's like a slightly more talented Chris Cooley. I'm very high on him.

The last day for underclassmen to declare is 1/15. The player has until 1/18 to change his mind if he doesn't sign an agent.
 
Auburn junior CB Jerraud Powers declares

Auburn junior defensive back Jerraud Powers will turn pro a year early and will make himself available for the NFL draft in April. Auburn will acknowledge Powers' decision later today.

He's the second Auburn junior to say he's turning pro. Defensive tackle Sen'Derrick Marks also said he's leaving early. Defensive end Antonio Coleman said last weekend that he's returning for his senior season.

Powers had 47 tackles and two interceptions in 2008. He missed two games with hamstring injuries. Powers is finishing his Auburn career with 136 tackles and six interceptions.

Lot of people saying this will be an extraordinarily strong Draft because even more eligible underclassmen will come out than normal to avoid the threat of a new union contract with the NFL Players which would cap rookie contracts in future years.

Goodell made a big deal over promising that no rookie contract changes would be made until at least 2 years from now, absolutely guaranteeing that players who come out this year or next year will have the same shot at a big payday.

I dunno, but I'm thinking all of the players' agents are inducing them to declare now and go NFL this year in the event that the following scenario happens: Players Union approachs Goodell and says in so many words "cap the rookie salaries beginning next year and we'll do a long-term deal with you right now".

He is the one RB in this draft that I would consider useing 15 on. This guy is perfect for us (ZB). This guy is Slaton on roids. It would be nice to have a dominant Running game with 2 talented RB's to throw at teams.

Virginia junior WR Kevin Ogletree has become then latest underclassmen to announce that he will be entering the 2009 draft. The 6-0, 190-pound Ogletree, who reportedly runs in the 4.5 range over 40 yards, had 58 receptions in 2008 after sitting out the previous season because of a torn ACL.

Wisconsin junior RB P.J. Hill has announced he will pass on his final year of eligibility and enter the 2009 draft. The 5-10, 235-pound Hill ran for over 3,000 career yards with the Badgers, but also missed time at various junctures in his career with injuries.

TE Jared Cook has announced that he will forego his final year of eligibility and enter the April draft.

Texas Tech wide receiver Michael Crabtree is expected to announce at a 3 p.m. ET news conference on Tuesday that he will enter the NFL draft, two people close to Crabtree said Friday.

Crabtree had an ankle specialist determine that his high ankle sprain was properly diagnosed and treated. Crabtree is expected to attend the NFL scouting combine but is not expected to run a 40-yard dash.

More likely, Crabtree will run at his own pro day. Crabtree has visited with Texas Tech coach Mike Leach twice already and will visit with him once more before the planned news conference.

Leach has mentioned the possibility of the receiver returning to win a Heisman, but Crabtree, 6-foot-3, 214 pounds, has been told by multiple sources, including the NFL draft advisory committee, that he would be a first-round pick.

Crabtree had 93 catches and 18 touchdowns in the regular season, averaging 94.6 yards per game. He won the prestigious Biletnikoff Award for the nation's top receiver.

Crabtree, a draft-eligible sophomore, also won the award last season.

No link yet but ESPN is reporting on College Football Live that Sam Bradford is returning to school.

I imagine it wasn't hard to convince him he didn't want to be drafted by the Lions.
 
Mark Sanchez holding a press conference tomorrow morning to announce his decision.

Expected to declare. With McCoy, Bradford, and Tebow all coming back I expect him to declare. Would probably be the second QB selected.

FYI the top pick usually doesn't get drafted by a playoff-calibre team.
The top pick always goes to Detroit, or whatever team is the Detroit of that particular year.

He has no first step at the hole. He runs high. Faster Criss Brown. Thanks but no thanks. And I'm thinking, they're not going to do anything to pi$$ Steve Slaton off. He already wants his pay day....and you're going to pay a new guy more money than the work horse ? At least every one tells me he's our work horse. Wanna see Slaton's bottom lip curl up quick....draft a RB befor the third round.

You should actually watch the players sometimes instead of just reading about them online.

Does that look like a slow first step to you??? IMO McCoy is the closest thing to Slaton you will find in this draft. If you dont think a RB is important enough to draft high that is fine but dont not draft one just to not upset Slaton. That is just silly. Alot of teams are loading up their backfields with 2 qaulity backs now. The season is just to long and the RB's take to much punishment for there to be only one good RB anymore.

This argument that "the offense is top ten, the D on hte other hand" is also silly. There is literally 4 positions (QB, RB, LT and TE) on Offense that if the starter goes down the offense goes with him. We are stuck with our backup QB but have no one to back up the other positions that can contribute at even a decent level for an extended amount of time.

Is Steve Slaton the man in Houston or not ?.....we draft a Rb higher than third the Texan's brain trust is telling me no he is not. And every syllable that passed though Kubiak's lips praising the guy in December was an out and out lie.

Both fit. So does Brown, but he'll be gone off the board long before our third round pick.

Swallow the hype....or better go back two years and read mine. I stand by what I posted. The guy in the first place doesn't fit with his skill set. And in the second he's hurt. So how many time do I have to watch the CS to know what he is all about ? He runs too GD high and he has no first step at the hole. That's what I know.

Well judging by his quotes, Slaton is working towards his rice bowl pay day. It's not silly. There's a reason the kid dropped into the third. One of those reasons was a maturity question. Now they may upset the apple cart and draft a RB high. But I bet they leave that sleeping tiger lay and look for something else. If it's working Einstein why would you monkey with it ? I wouldn't do it. Flip the finger to Slaton and see what happens.

I get it...you believe he's Earl Campbell. Well he's not. He's Ron Dayne...and we just cut that.

You aren't going to go anywhere with just SS, though. If improving this team is 'flipping' Slaton off then too bad. I'm not for drafting a RB in the first round, but we do need another RB in the mid rounds (3rd, 4th, 5th round) to help with the workload.
 
So - Terrence Cody officially is returning to Alabama? I know he said he was several weeks back, but I take those early declarations with a grain of salt.
