I get it. He wants to build through the draft and find value in free agency. I get that part. That makes sense to me for the most part. I don't want to be one of those teams that throws around tons of money at bad contracts. My strategy would be similar to John Dorsey's. And right now I think he's the best GM in football. You take the laughing stock of the league and you get your QB. Then you surround your QB with weapons. We've done that for the most part. Gaine has Nuk, Fuller, Coutee. But where GREAT GM's excel from the status Quo ones is they truly find the value players. What Kareem Hunt did was awful, and yes, he's not for everybody. But bringing in a top 5 RB with no risk is a great move. Especially when you struck gold in the 2nd round the year before at the same position. That's going to be the scariest 1-2 punch in the league next year after his suspension is lifted. Then he brings in a top 5 WR to go with probably the best WR2 in football. Then he finds value in Greedy dropping to the 2nd to go with his pro bowl CB he drafted last year. That's part of the problem with the Texans. We're okay with being just okay. And that's what I don't get. We're close, no doubt, but we're wasting our core's valuable time. The time to maximize our window is now. And if that means trading a middle round pick for a bookend LT, then you do it. Plain and simple. If he never plays a down, you're out a 3rd. Oh well.
I'm not saying Gaine is a bad GM, he just hasn't warranted the benefit of the doubt yet. If we have a bad year, which looks that say since we actually have a tough schedule for once in OB's coaching career, then yes I do think Gaine's seat needs to heat up a little bit. Put it this way, unless Tytus and/or Scharping can start and lock down a position from Day 1, I don't think we got better as a football team from last year to this year. And with a ton of money to spend, that makes me sick. Before long Deshaun is going to sign that next huge deal and we're only going to be able to build from the draft. You don't get luxuries like this often. That's why the Chiefs are doing everything they can to load up, and same with the Browns. And what do you know, the Chiefs are regularly one of the leagues better teams, and have a very very real shot at winning the Super Bowl this year, while we sit at the 18th best odds.
In a more unrealistic approach, I want the McNair's gone. I want OB gone. I want people who care more about winning championships then selling tickets and public perception. I want guys who are going to take chances to get to the next level over being content with meaningless AFC South Championship banners (those shouldn't even be a thing. It's been the worst division in football for a while). We're not going to trade for Trent, and we won't try. We're going to go through this season, probably end up 7-9, filled with OB saying he has to coach better, and then rinse and repeat.
