Training camp 2013

Last year, JJ sustained a complete dislocation, where all the elbow ligaments are disrupted. This is a very serious injury, leaving almost all players with combinations of limited range-of-motion, stiffness, pain and loss of strength and/or minor instability (from permanently stretched ligaments). As I posted when it happened, this injury is very prone to re-dislocation......even when considered "fully healed." I emphasized that re-dislocation a second time proves instability and no longer allows for consideration for conservative rehab as was done for the first.......it leads to the need for SURGICAL repair, which is a 6-12 month recovery........and that's why I strongly suggested last year in order to minimized the latter scenario, he would be smart to wear that splint for the remainder of his career.

Before the "soreness" was revealed:

J.J. Watt says injured elbow never fully healed last season

Posted on April 3, 2013 at 8:27 pm by John Brannen

Texans defensive end J.J. Watt is looking forward to what he hopes is an injury-free season of harassing opposing quarterbacks. (Karen Warren/Houston Chronicle)

Eighty-one total tackles, 20.5 sacks and 16 batted passes earned Texans defensive end J.J. Watt the NFL’s Defensive Player of the Year award.

According to Watt, he wasn’t playing at full capacity.

During the first week of practices in August, Watt dislocated his left elbow. He missed the majority of the preseason and wore a noticeable black arm brace during all 18 Texans’ games.

“In the beginning, it definitely affected me,” Watt said in an interview with SportsRadio 610. “All the ligaments in there were torn, they were all gone, so they had to have time to recover and regroup. So obviously, I wasn’t at full strength. The brace helped a lot, but it was more of a mental thing, getting over the thought process of knowing that it was injured and making sure that I could still have confidence in it. As the season went on, I got more and more confidence in it and obviously, it didn’t hinder me too much; I had some success out there. But (I’m) looking forward to a 100 percent full healthy season.”

First year coming off injury isn't normally considered fully healthy. I'm not understanding why everytime I post something it turns into an attack on grammar, analogy or incidentals. Strange.

So, uhhhh yeah Im looking forward to him having a big year with or without Watt.

For the record, I had no problem whatsoever with your take, and I think it's a good one. I'm looking for bigger and better things from Mr. Crick this year.

Playoffs and anyone else posting camp updates and tweets - mucho gracias my fellow Texans fans. I've been soaking these in every day. I know it's only one or two person's opinions, but it's all we have to go on if we can't make practice.

Interesting that Chris Jones is playing some DE. I wonder if it's just to see if he can do it (IE the more positions one knows the greater the chance of making it) or if this is an actual position switch from NT to end. Jones seems like a NT to me based on everything I have read and the little game action I've seen of him.

I'm starting to really love the talent and depth at both WR and secondary - and both have been notorious trouble spots in the past. Guys on both sides of the ball making plays, lots of competition etc. Steel hardens steel - both sides getting better. The same can be said of the trenches. Love it.

Ed Reed interview with Deion Sanders on NFL Network was great.

Ed(hip) told Sanders today that he's 75-80 percent and he wouldn't play if today was the season opener. If the Super Bowl was today, "I'd play."

Note: It was Reed who asked Deion to speak to the DBs today.

"Work on your craft, you're an artist. Get better at your craft." Reed to Texans DBs.

On of the first things he did -- Ed bought Andre a bicycle to keep him in shape, "This is his team. I want him to be the MVP of this league. I want him to win that Super Bowl."

Every Texans DB will have Deion's phone number, to call and ask questions any time. Pretty frickin' cool.

It's good news to hear about Bullock if it was indeed him. I suspected that during his year off, he'd improve his leg strength/technique. Hopefully the time off and spare training time did him some good.

Re: shapiro in that picture above, I think he has a decent shot to stick around at least on the practice squad if he can kick well. Being able to punt and kick field goals is kind of valuable.

Some potentially good news re. a player that has for years remained more of a ghost on the roster than a significant factor.

Yeah, this is the equivalent of Roc's second year due to the injury, so his time to show up and shine or go home. So far, it's the former.

I get the feeling we're all going to be let down by the time the first pre season game comes around.

Jayson Braddock ‏@JaysonBraddock
Favorite play of the day was away from the ball. Swearinger undercuts TE in dime zone cov, QB quickly goes to next read. Great tech / angle

For the most part, Schaub's fade has come on quick w Hopkins. Saw the lack of experience w/ it with Lemon. Kareem was handsy, but short PBU

I've talked a lot over the years about how Schaub doesn't throw the EZ fade. Obviously making a conscious effort this year w/ Hop in town.

Kareem Jackson had tight coverage on AJ on EZ out & got the PBU on would be TD in redzone drills.

Talked to Jefferson about his surprising discipline on the backside & how that combined w/ rare athleticism could factor in vs zone read tms

W. Jefferson may be getting undersold when he's mentioned as "extremely raw" More than a pass rusher in his future. Tons of TFLs on backside

J-Jo all over Hopkins, arms literally came under Hopkins arms from behind, Hopkins with the same solid hand catches that he had at college.

Trevardo played with a solid base vs Quessenberry on the edge when setting vs run.

Roc continues to impress. He made his living as a boundary CB at Va Tech, & this experience & his physical play showed in the RZ today.

Jeff Maehl ran a beautiful EZ post corner route on Elbert Mack this morning. Hard fake / bite & Maehl open w/ ease.

Willie Jefferson has been impressing w/ pass rush skills, but the added weight & reps are starting to pay off in other areas.

Brandon Harris came out w a sore groin & had the ice bag wrapped early on. Later in practice ice was off, but didn't participate in drills.

Smith didn't want to discuss the knee after practice & Kubiak said he just found out about it. Afternoon session should bring more detail.

During morning practices, Ben Jones filled in nicely for Wade Smith in redzone 11 on 11s at LG. Wade was looking at left knee w/ trainers.

This is what I was concerned about with Brooks direct knee impact injury. A patella (knee cap) bone bruise can becoming a nagging injury leaving the player unable to participate due to lack of range of motion and often very intense pain. Furthermore, it is not unusual to be associated with damage to the adjacent bursae, fat, patellar ligament or the posterior cartilage surface of the patella. An accompanying small chip fracture or stress fracture of the patella is also not uncommon. Especially, even if a tiny stress fracture is present, if not addressed with an 8-10 week healing rehab period, there is long term concern that another blow to the knee could break the knee cap in two because of the quadriceps muscle pulling from above while the patella tendon pulling from below during flexion of the knee. This would require major surgery with at least a 3-4 month period prior to returning to play.

anatomy%20of%20knee.GIF

An MRI will have been already performed to diagnose the bone bruise. The Texans would know at this point if and how much collateral damage may exist. Patella bone bruises alone are bad enough in that depending on how severe, it could take months (up to a year in some cases) to completely heal, barring further trauma to the area. Rest and rehab of several weeks would not be out of order for even a modest bone bruise. However, as it stands now, if that is the case, I would guess that the Texans would push Wade to the limits of his pain threshold in order to get him back on the field as soon as possible. In doing so, it would not be surprising to see a significant performance drop off and/or setback.

In that the reports only say bone bruise of the "knee," this could also apply to bone bruise to the lower femur bone or upper tibia bone which are considered part of the knee. When bone bruises occur in load-bearing bones such as the tibia and femur, avoidance of weight-bearing for significant periods (depending on severity of the bruise) is extremely important to reduce the extension of the damage and significant prolongation of recovery.

I like it.

Man, if this defense can stay healthy...We are going to be really, really, really, really.......good.

Crick to me, rushes the passer from then interior really well. With Watt, Jamison, Antonio, Crick and maybe Chris Jones I think you have a great set of 5 techniques and interior pass rushers. We are deep there.

With so many young guys they want to look at, it's not surprising that they choose to rest 19-20 players.

Yeah..... Kinda wonder what people mean by in stride sometimes. Very rarely have I seen Matt throw something I would call in stride.

Both Crick & Mitchell looked like Antonio Smith in 2009 & 2010. Close, but never finishing. They'd get pressure, & they'd get the QB off the spot, but never closed the deal.

That's still good football, don't get me wrong. I'm agreeing with you more or less in that I think they are both good interior pass rushers. They just need to take that step Antonio did in 2011.

The TD pass to Kevin Walter last year was deep, hit him in stride and was an over the shoulder catch.
