Promise unfulfilled
However, Hart's skill set and his desire to play baseball and football didn't necessarily equate with the system installed by Norm Chow, who came to USC in 2001 as Carroll's offensive coordinator.
"Norm was fixated on Matt from the beginning," said Wilson Hart. "Billy was probably more athletic, but Matt had a gift for executing the game plan in the Norm Chow offense. Norm didn't make a mistake (by backing Leinart), but we'll never know what would have happened if USC had poured the resources into Billy that they did into Matt."
Wilson Hart said one play at a practice early in Hart's career set the tone for his son's chances of playing football.
"Billy drops back and nobody is open, so he bobs and jumps and weaves and jukes and finally buys a little time," Wilson Hart said. "He sees the fullback over the middle and powers the ball in sidearm and hits the guy. Then he comes off the field, thinking he's done a fine thing, and Norm says, 'Billy, that was a great play. Next time, throw the damned ball away.'
"That sums it all up. The point Norm was making is that he didn't want (a scrambling quarterback). When it's not there, dump it and don't risk losing 10 yards."
