I hate the new rule where a coach can challenge a penalty.
Has one of those been overturned yet?

Can't remember what game it was, but there was a clear PI, not one of these could have gone either way hand slapping back and forth deals. It was clear PI, it wasn't called, got challenged, and the call stood. Pretty pointless to have the challenge to try to get things right if you're still not going to get it right.

I haven't heard of a single PI challenge that has been overturned yet.

I retired last year, strongly suggest it when you have enough and have had enough

I hate that Cal McNair doesn't attend the post game pressers, nor does he even watch the media Q&A sessions with Bill O'Brien. How the hell does a guy that admits that he's not coaching good enough, needs to do a better job, and didn't have any answers for what the opposing defenses were doing gets to still be employed? He's literally done this for the past 5 years. So much so that you can randomly take a post game interview from any year (2014-2019) and not tell the difference. I hate Bill O'Brien the HC/OC, his system, and hate that he's been given absolute control of the team.

I hate that Kyle Shanahan was the obvious successor once Kubiak was ousted, whether we needed to procrastinate a year or two under a nobody Belichick coach or not. I hate that there were more than a couple suggestions that he wouldn't have wanted to work here anyway with Bob McNair's heavy handedness once we were the team to beat.

I hate that Owners like ours keep seeing the success of one (two with Brady) person and attributing it to everyone else. Bill Walsh had a coaching tree, well taught, well trained, imaginative, inventive and earned their stripes. Belichick's had Romeo's solid tenure as a DC, and his best prospect blew up the Broncos (Tebow?) before crawling back, who is the next big thing - again. Weis couldn't even win at Notre Dame. 20 years as the headcoach of the most successful franchise in that time, and the complete failure that is O'Brien might be his biggest HC success. And I hate that many are clamoring for his 'assistant' to be our next GM ... we already have a nobody TE coach destroying the team. Maybe let's NOT repeat ourselves?

I hate that we didn't get Shanny
Coaches, administrators, players, draft picks ... I have said repeatedly over every section of this forum that I love legacies. The NFL has requirements that even the most prepared aren't prepared for, to know the how and why as you enter the league, and having a mentor before doing so - you're miles ahead. For fiction's sake, a 2014 Kyle Shanahan team with the Matthews and Long children at their core ... I want to own THAT team.

Shanny's system with Watson running it would be glorious. I wouldn't hate that.

It might not be a popular opinion, but I honestly feel that a Kubiak(Shanny)/Watson partnership would be like the natural chemistry wee see with Reid/Mahomes. Some coaches are just a great fit for some talents.
I agree, Kubiaks offense would make Watson a for sure future HOF IMO. Play action bootleg chunk it 60 yards down the field sounds pretty amazing right now....

I disagree. Kubiak(Shanny)/Watson would crush Reid/Mahomes. To give Watson the naked boot freedom with a tightend sitting at the pylon would almost be unfair. Play actions to Hopkins running free ... that's not allowed. They made Vontae MF'N Leach a receiver ... Duke as an upgraded option route that Foster used to live on is just plain asking too much. Shanny's ability to combine routes and make a holy mess of defensive alignments ... pretty sure that Coutee blew out his hamstring again, somewhere in Utah - a defender finally caught him.

Oh that's as a passer, he gets to rush for a buttload of free yards as well.

It’s almost criminal to handicap Watson by forcing O’Brien to be his HC. Cal needs to show that he’s not the incompetent, gutless dunce people in here claim he is, and go after a HC that can and will work with the talent he has, vs forcing his “system” on players that obviously ain’t compatible. Play action, bootlegs, ZBS with the guys we have would be nasty!

Watson's play-action fake is pretty weak. Maybe it's the coaching he's receiving, but it doesn't appear to work as well as Schaub's.

In all fairness, Schaub and Manning were on another level with their play-action. Schaub often successfully handed it off to the back - who was 7 yards away on a flare route. I don't think anyone has abused camera guys more than Schaub. A concerted effort between the booth and fans to figure out who actually has the ball was always in effect, because it wasn't on the screen until somebody found it in the air - at least once per game.

A coach like Shanahan builds the scenario that defenders are forced to accept, giving the quarterback a bit more leniency on major attacks. Watson cant fake like those two, but the sell is establishing options through run or pass (whichever is working) - and that is coaching. Watching replays of the 49ers this season, there's a lot they need to clean up, but the calls and scheme arent it - that's a beautiful offense with less than ideal talent. So many simple play-action drops in under 2 seconds for 10 yards to a skinny post tightend ... that should be the staple of OUR offense.

Love or hate Kubiak - dang I love that offense. It needs new blood from time to time, and "Lil Shanny" has it ... I'm watching 49'ers highlights and frankly can't get enough - except for the 15yd throw to the sideline for 4yds that has a habit of turning into an interception. Shanny has work to do as a head coach, but as an offensive mind, he might be IT.

Schaub was seriously one of the best at it, but it's definitely a big drop-off and something I wish they'd work on.

I watched Kubiak working with Schaub on that play fake over the course of multiple weeks when he was first traded here , they honed that to perfection , cant count the number of times it would fake out the camera man.

Only one guy I can think of that was close to Schaub on the play fake and that's Peyton Manning.

You really gotta sell the handoff and hide the ball after , if its just hanging out there …. you haven't done your job.

Seems like a lost art these days …. most of these QB's are half hearted in the execution of it.

Kubiak's offense is just natural period …. Look at the QB's he had to work with over the years and how they were all relatively successful regardless of talent.

Schaub wasn't the best athlete nor did he have a big arm but was a pro bowl QB because of it , Rosencopter , Keenum , Yates , Fitzmagic all had relative success

Even though he wasn't salvageable - HWWNBM had 22 consecutive completions running that offense which at the time was an NFL record.

We really need to get rid of OB and bring in a Sid Gillman/Bill Walsh WCO guy.

We are loving us some WCO in here this morning.

Both systems work. You just have to have a QB capable of running them at a high level. There have been many QB's that have struggled running the WCO too. Currently Cousins is one of those guys.

I hate it when we don't put DW under center and run the ball more so that defenses have to actually guess as to what kind of play OB has called.

With RBs like Miller & Duke we should be able to run well out of the gun.

It's a mindset problem.

You can run from the gun but its just a proven fact that play action works so much better from an I or variant formation from under center and that's keeping the opposition honest.

The bridge between stupid and useless is short.
Watson's play-action fake is pretty weak. Maybe it's the coaching he's receiving, but it doesn't appear to work as well as Schaub's.

Agreed. To me play action fakes are really just a matter of EFFORT. OB doesn't demand it so Watson and company are just lazy about it. Probably most defensive linemen can tell if it's a run or pass based on how offensive linemen setup very early - but at least hold the linebackers and safetys for a step.

Also, pick your spots when calling pa fakes. If our run game isnt working its probably a waste of time. And why do we call pa fakes when the defense shows blitz? That's a recipe for more sacks/hits on Watson.

Another thing we can do (and I've said it elsewhere) is hard counts to keep the defense guessing. That's just a matter of DISCIPLINE. We dont have it and we don't even try to change snap tempo. It seems fairly simple to me and I'm mesmerized why we don't do it.

My last complaint (for the moment anyway) is hot reads. Maybe we have them and I'm just not seeing it? Maybe we have them and we're not executing? Are hot reads and option routes even a part of this offense? It seems far to often route combinations downfield take WAY to long - even when it's clear defenses are blitzing.

Hot reads and their execution are just a matter of PREPARATION. If OB doesn't allow it then the scheme is broke. Again, maybe I'm just not seeing it but defenses are rarely punished for blitzing us. So guess what, they'll keep blitzing.

Hmmm...

Effort, discipline, preparation. These are all coachable...

I'm looking at you OB.

the team isn’t going anywhere with ob. Inconsistent play calling & horrible clock management. If we loose this next game. I’ll probably sit out and come back when ob is gone. Im tired of this

That's the problem with 0-3 last year and then winning 9 straight. Cal will wait hoping to see it again.

I've said it before, I want an AFC championship appearance. Nothing less is good enough to retain OB imo.

We’ll probably be one and done in the playoffs. If this team didn’t have Deshaun they wouldnt be playoff bound. We should have reached the afc champ game but Ob continues to be there biggest nemesis. History repeats itself and Ob will choke again. He’s not meant to lead a championship team. Doesn’t have the personality and you can see it how the players perform.
