IMO that is repetition. I don't think think Clowney should move too much across the line this season. I know that Romeo is trying to figure out how to creatively combine his rushers, but I would put Clowney's development at the forefront. Let him play on the right at 7 or 9, whether that's standing or in a 3 point stance, his progress can very well decide games later this year. That progress could also fall apart completely if asked to do too much and play the entire line.
Don't quote this, I'm about to say something potentially stupid, but I worry that Watt may be almost a hindrance this season. I've said for years that he's most suited to play inside, that's where his hands and moves and talent can truly change games. Part of that was contingent on having guys outside who could take advantage, which we didn't before and needed him everywhere but now we finally have. If Watt were able to play inside at that level he'd have both Mercilus and Clowney running free to the quarterback. Between the groin and back and other undisclosed core issues, I worry that Watt may not be that player this year - he was manhandled in game 1 and looked hurt/weak. A front four of Clowney, Wilfork, Watt, Mercilus would be how the Giants won a Superbowl - but Watt may need to play outside to prevent re-injury as well as give him a chance to use talent over hindered physical ability. That forces subs and/or stunts in the middle to keep our rushers on the field. With the way Mercilus and Clowney played in game 1 compared to Watt, combined with Covington's emergence, our best front 4 may not include Watt.
