The Johnny "Football" Manziel NFL thread

Wow, rehab after 1 season. Even I didn't think he'd sink this far this fast

Actually, this is probably the most mature decision he's made in his life and it surprises me that it happened this quick. Hopefully the rehab center doesn't become a revolving door for him. Too many people go into those places for a couple weeks to a month and think they're "cured". Doesn't work like that.

Browns hopeful for Johnny Manziel return for training camp
CLEVELAND -- Johnny Manziel's decision to get treatment and “improve” himself is a big step with plenty of implications for the 22-year-old quarterback on and off the field. This is a delicate story because Manziel is dealing with real, raw problems. After making some calls today, talking with two people close to Manziel, here's what I've been told, along with some general impressions of the day.

  • The Browns' staff is expecting Manziel to be part of the team for training camp -- they are not planning to walk away from him. The only reason they aren't penciling him in for organized team activities in the late spring is because they want Manziel to take his time and don't want to place a hard timetable on his process.
  • One person close to Manziel said the quarterback voluntarily opted for treatment because he wants to “figure out his value system.” What prompted the change? Accumulation of things, sources said -- the Johnny Football persona catching up to him, the issues on the final weekend of the season that forced him to miss team activities on a Saturday because of what Browns sources believed was a night of partying, losing some credibility in factions of the locker room. If he wants to put football first, this is a step in that direction.
  • Manziel is expected to stay in a facility for at least a few weeks but the term will depend on what his doctor prescribes, according to a source.
  • Johnny Football was winning out over Johnny Manziel the player. Manziel tried to juggle both but it's nearly impossible to be a great quarterback that way. The days of Joe Namath are over. The game has become a grind, full of intricate schemes and defensive linemen with elite speed. Manziel conceded, and rightfully so.
  • People in the Browns facility want to see Manziel do well. He's not disliked. He can be engaging. He still has traits that translate at the NFL level, including arm strength and instinctive play. The Browns want to give him an offseason to see how he responds, what he can do with a full slate of preparation.
  • Meanwhile, the Browns must search the earth for quarterback help in case Manziel still isn't ready. Don't expect the Browns to force the issue in the draft, leaving the free agency market (Brian Hoyer, Mark Sanchez, Jake Locker, etc) as a feasible option. Any quarterback coming here knows he has a realistic chance to start. And don't forget about Connor Shaw. He showed a lot of toughness in the season finale at Baltimore.

Browns owner says team didn't know about Johnny Manziel's personal life
Jimmy Haslam must not have access to the Internet.

That's really the only way to explain how the Cleveland Browns' owner could have not known about Johnny Manziel's off-field red flags when the team drafted him in the first round last year. Here's what Haslam said about Manziel during a press conference on Wednesday:

"I don't know how much of Johnny's personal life was known by everybody then," Haslam said, according to the Akron Beacon-Journal.

Well, in Haslam's defense, there might not be a good wifi signal in there...

too late to cop pleas Mr. Haslam...The circus tent already has its stakes in the ground and the bearded lady feels at home in Cleveland.

Yeah, there's definately something broken there. DB (because he's a moderator I guess) can rep anyone as many times as he wants, but I haven't been able to rep him going on 4 years.

Sorry to derail the thread, but I think the whole "must spread rep" feature is stupid.

Who the hell cares how many times you want to rep someone?

Depending on how the next 3 years play out o wouldn't mind picking him up lord knows 3 years from now we will, still be looking for our franchise qb

I get lots of MSR messages, too. There have been quite a few of your posts (among many other members) over the years that the system would not let me rep because I had to spread the love. :)

Slapping myself upside my head for so much as dwelling on it, but do you happen to know what the parameters are for "spreading the love" around? As in how many times your're 'required' to rep someone else before you can rep the one you want to?

lol ... never mind, that question is even more stupid. :gun:

I'm not sure if it is based on how many members you rep before you get a chance to rep someone against or if it's based on how many rep points you give out. I suspect that it is based on the number of members, though.

Not a stupid question at all. Vinny put the rep system in place from the beginning in order to give us the opportunity to both hold each other accountable as a collective community and to let someone know that you really like their post. I think it's a good concept overall, especially when they made it to where you could see who reps you so it cut down on the anonymous neg reps out of spite.

I don't know the specific numbers, but there are two rep limits (1) the total number of reps you can give out in a day and (2) some number of reps you have to give out (can't remember but it is pretty low) before giving the same person rep again.

Both are designed to keep control on people getting in neg rep wars or rep boosting agreements.

I believe its configurable by forum administrators who use that to keep it from getting out of hand. You could discover it through repping MemberA and then counting subsequent rep given afterwards before you can rep MemberA again...

But that's sounds like a lot of work for the silly rep machine, doesn't it? It's mostly a good way to avoid a gazillion +1 posts. :runaway:

Hey, I feel guy your pain. I still get "You must spread neg rep before you can give it to Lord Bills again."

I have to agree with the most interesting man in the world "I don't always give negative rep, but when I do, I prefer to give it to Lord Bills".

Why do people care about reps?

Why do people care about reps?

I don't think most people do.

It does give an outsider a quick glimpse into which posters are "known" and "regulars".

Not that most newbies really check it out.

When I'm on a new forum, though, that has Rep, I do pay more attention to the people with higher post/rep counts.

I think it is 5 reps a day and also 5 reps to others before you can give it to someone again. Not sure why those numbers come to my mind though...

Why do people care about reps?

I think most people know that rep isn't that important. What is important is rep, divided by number of posts, multiplied by years as a member over yaw.

But seriously, rep is in place for people who don't check the board frequently enough to know which posts they should avoid and who is actually somewhat credible. The must spread rep function is there so people don't abuse the system. If you constantly get "must spread rep", try spreading the rep. I rep people all the time rather than respond to a thread I don't feel like getting into an argument in. It's basically like an "I agree".

Manziel Teammate: 'Think About...If We Had Drafted Teddy Bridgewater'
Some players believed Manziel wasn't good enough to play in the NFL. It wasn't solely the work ethic or the partying, but a dramatic talent deficit.

In the wake of that disastrous start against the Bengals, a Browns player remembers a brief conversation he had with a teammate.

"Think about where we'd be now," the player recalled telling a teammate, "if we had drafted Teddy Bridgewater."
...
He's an easy guy to pile on.

Yes, yes he is, in part because of his own actions. In part because of a Browns organization that remains dysfunctional despite suckers like me thinking the team finally knew what it was doing.

The Browns are left with this frightening scenario. It's not Manziel's off-field disasters that are hurting him. It's worse.

It's that he might not be a good player. At all.

Pretty in depth look inside the process/team by Mike Freeman.

Well. I had been saying that for a while. Off field stuff aside Manziel is not a good enough player.

Unless he works really hard I don't think he'll ever get there. I have my doubts either way.

#Browns Pettine said Browns didn't encourage Manziel to go to rehab. "He's in a much better place than he was'' when he went in

#Browns Pettine on Manziel: "I did go to visit him last week (in rehab) and see how he's doing and let him know we're proud of him.''

Pretty unusual to allow bosses to visit rehab, ime.

It's not really rep if it requires reping those you wouldn't otherwise rep.

Pettine said he visited Manziel in rehab last week, and that “he has our full support.”

“He’s in a much better place now than before he went in,” Pettine said. “We’re proud of him. . . .

“We had the same information everyone else in the League had. It turns out to be a deeper-rooted thing that we thought.”

The support for their quarterback at a human level is impressive. But the lack of support from a football standpoint is telling.

The Browns are clearly interested in Marcus Mariota (after their coincidental hiring of his private quarterback coach), and the fact they’ve already met with veteran Josh McCown should tell you they’re open for business.

But after spending first-round picks on the position in two of the last three years, they really need to get one of these decisions right one day.

An ignorant organization (didn't know how deep rooted) will continue to make ignorant decisions.

Whwn Pettine was first hired, I thought it was another in a series of Browns flubs. But, he showed me a lot by making the team competitive and keeping it together. I have a lot of respect for him and the job he did. I see Pettine getting more power and eventually turning the Browns into a winner. But, he has to be the guy making the football decisions.

He'll step on someone's toes and get canned, go to another organization, and flourish.

That seems to be the problem thus far. I remember when the owner (Haslam?) first took over, saying how he wanted to model the Steelers. He came from the Steelers organization so you'd think he knew how they ran. Yet, so far, they've been polar opposites from the Steelers. The owner seems to be meddling more than the Rooney's ever would.

Imo, Pettine is paddling up the river without a paddle

WOW BREAKING NEWS: @TheRealTRizzo said a source very close to him said Johnny Manziel will not play in the 2015 @NFL season #SameOldBrowns

http://www.stationcaster.com/player_skinned.php?s=70&c=476&f=4125513

From ~2:30 mark to ~4:30 mark, doesn't sound very solid to me.

If Manziel made the choice now that he'll miss the 2015 season it would speak to 1) commitment to changing how he lives and/or 2) dual diagnosis that needs time to level out.

Manziel does not seem to be one who is willing to take the hard road to any goal. I now see this applying to his approach to the most difficult decision of his life.......one that he is required to take to make himself "right," if that is even possible. Fail here, and making it in the NFL will be the least of his problems.

I see reality TV in Manziel's future. Celebrity Rehab immediately comes to mind, but also MTV's "Real World" in which immature 20-somethings party like no tomorrow without the burdens of actual jobs to hold them accountable. It's the perfect gig for him.

Yep. Or whats that show on VH1 where they have all the celebs live in the same house?

Report: Browns 90 percent moved on from Johnny Manziel
By Ryan Wilson | CBSSports.com
April 2, 2015 1:23 pm ET

Less than a year ago, a text message from Johnny Manziel (and perhaps some advice from a homeless man) convinced the Browns and owner Jimmy Haslam to trade up to No. 22 and take the Texas A&M quarterback.

Now the Browns are reportedly prepared for life after Manziel, who struggled in five games as a rookie and entered a rehab program earlier this year.

"I think about 90 percent [the Browns] have moved on [from Manziel] in their own minds except that they really don't know who they're going to get when Johnny leaves rehab, which has been an extended stay -- a two-month stay," ESPN's Chris Mortensen said Tuesday during an appearance on Mike & Mike, via NJ.com. "He should be getting out in the first week of April if they're satisfied that he's ready to go out and get into society and whatever deep-rooted problems that he had has been addressed. OK, now he's part of your depth chart. You have Josh McCown."

Ah yes, McCown, the journeyman quarterback the Browns signed last month, presumably to mentor Manziel. Except that, according to Mary Kay Cabot of the Cleveland Plain Dealer, McCown could be the bridge quarterback to whoever the team targets as its next face of the franchise -- and that could be decided in the coming weeks.

"I think the Browns are fully prepared to start McCown this year, but they will continue to look for chances to upgrade the position," Cabot wrote over the weekend. "I think they'll try to trade up to draft Marcus Mariota, and I also think they could make another run at Sam Bradford on draft day."

What a cluster.

The Eagles traded for Sam Bradford in March, but the Browns were willing to give up a first-rounder for Bradford, the top pick in the 2010 draft who battled injuries for much of his time in St. Louis. And it sounds like Cleveland could still be in the Bradford business if they miss out on Mariota.

More from Cabot: "If [the Browns] don't land one of those two, I do think McCown will be their man in 2015. They are also big on Connor Shaw, who could start games for them this season if necessary. As for Manziel, they'll see what happens when he gets out of rehab soon. At this point, I don't think they can get much in a trade. Maybe Jerry Jones is still interested."

My God. We're having a conversation about Cowboys owner Jerry Jones' perceived incompetence getting the Browns out of a jam. We say "perceived" because the Cowboys won the NFC East and a playoff game last season. And more importantly, we're convinced that Cowboys vice president Stephen Jones, Jerry's son, isn't easily distracted by shiny objects.

Of course, all this could have been avoided if the Browns took the advice of the $100,000 study they commissioned that concluded Teddy Bridgewater would be a better NFL quarterback than Manziel.

Could this be a bigger cluster F..........?:vincepalm:

Don't under estimate the ineptitude of the Browns. They'll find a way to out do this eff up. We need to add a Manzielpalm for the message board.
