The Johnny "Football" Manziel NFL thread

Ben Tate said:
"He had success early in his career when he was at (Texas) A&M. He won the Heisman or whatever, but there are lots of people that have won the Heisman. I mean, Mark Ingram won the Heisman, and I don't see everyone all excited when he got to the league."

Well, Ingram wasn't "Marky Football®" when he was in college. And he certainly wasn't a self-professed rock star coming into the league.

Manziel tosses 3 INT's including 2 pick 6's during Tuesdays OTA's.

After flinging the ball to undrafted safety Robert Nelson in positional drills, Manziel tossed a second pick during a full-squad heave that landed in the arms of veteran Donte Whitner, who took it to the house. Lightning struck again when Johnny Football misfired on a sideline route that cornerback Joe Haden pulled out of the sky for another pick six, per The Plain Dealer.

The article goes on to say Manziel rebounded, but geez. 3 INT's and 2 Pick 6's in one practice!

Johnny doing Austin... or Austin doing Johnny?

Swan dive into bottle of champagne.

Johnny was just drafted by the San Diego Padres.

28th round, number 837 overall.

Didn't we do something similar to this with Drew Henson? The Padres get his contract just in case?

Somewhat different. Henson was first drafted into the MLB. Then after the Texans drafted him some years later. Then when he found that his was not being successful in the MLB, he wanted into the NFL. With the Texans holding his rights, the bamboozled the Cowboys into trading him to them in exchange for a 3rd round draft choice. He never amounted to anything in the NFL.

Manziel only played baseball in high school...never since.

Kolb
Keenum
& now Manziel..

Sumlin & Briles' systems do their qb's no favors entering the league. In addition to no physical playbooks, their systems also don't teach their qb's to be patient and take what the defense is giving them b/c they are constantly trying to go downfield. That works in college...not so much in the pros. As a result they get used to looking over the defense for the big plays rather than reading what's going on in the teeth of it....That's why you see so many of their qb's holding onto the ball so long & scrambling around trying to extend plays...hard to get them out of reading the route trees from long to short.

I don't know how Summit teaches his method, but I know that Brides teaches his QBS with visual learning ads. He had clips of plays on an Ipad for his guys to learn from.
To me that's innovative in teaching.

That spread offense was also utilized by coaches that have players drafted into the NFL like Newton and Kaepernick to name just a few.

This guy is a scandal and embarrassment to the NFL just waiting to happen.

BTW, is that some staff member trying to pull him out?

It looks like one of his body guards/keepers trying to stop the duck from floating to far out into the pool. Who knows though

I think that's a bit of an unfair comparison and I'm not a Johnny Football fan.

To be fair, Oj & Ray Lewis showed no signs of nefarious activities before they were caught. Perhaps I should have used the :sarcasm: emoticon

I'm thinking he may have been referring to the Heisman emblem on his baseball jersey.

He should have told the Padres to get him a different jersey, right? What was he thinking, wearing a jersey.

Jeez, you haters will look for anything to gripe about. Why does anyone still care? I don't go out of my way to read Manziel stories in the news anymore (and I don't watch Sportscenter/Manziel Stalk 24/7 either) but it seems like only those eager to see him fail still follow along to his story.

It's show business, man.

That's all pro football is at the end of the day.

What's funny is that there is an openly gay football player trying to make a team. But, he's boring. Dude is not doing anything to bring attention to himself. He's not a brand, and he even cancelled a tv show because of the backlash and distraction to his potential career.

Not Manziel, though. He's all about his brand. I doubt the dude does anything in public without checking where the cameras are in order to make sure it's in the 24 hour news cycle. It is not a matter of "if" Manziel will bring scandal/embarrassment to the league, but when.

As far as 'haters', you know how it goes: haters gonna' hate. That's part of the fun of being a fan. We've all got something that gets under our skin in a superficial way.

Publicity whore much?
I'm thinking he may have been referring to the Heisman emblem on his baseball jersey.
I assumed he was referring to the Padres drafting JM, not JM himself...?

...I don't go out of my way to read Manziel stories in the news anymore...
Neither do I, but he's on ESPN every day and blows up Twitter every few weeks.

JFF has taken the Kardashian path to fame building -- comes with negatives & positives.

I agree that it's beginning to get annoyingly pervasive. Of course I retain my Aggie bias, so my attitude towards it is different from the average person, but that's how it goes. Personally I'm happy for him to win until he plays the Texans. Then I want him to lose. Otherwise I wish him the best of luck with his career.

Whether you're rooting for, against or are indifferent towards Manziel...

It's something that's interesting to watch...If it's something you're interested in.

Haters..Lovers...meh....

Whatever...

None of it should ultimately affect Manziel's performance on the field.

TBH, I don't have a dog in this hunt. I don't love or hate the guy.

As an NFL fan, I just want to be entertained, and he's certainly lived up to that expectation so far. I look forward to seeing what he can do on the field to advance that entertainment.

Jeez, you haters will look for anything to gripe about.

Jeez, you guys going this route too? This sounds like VY fanboy all over again. Just like VY, Manziel is not doing a lot to improve his reputation right now.

I said earlier that the guy is a scandal and embarrassment to the NFL just waiting to happen. That doesn't make me a "hater", that's just what it honestly looks like to me.

If I were a Browns fan I would be concerned. If I were an Aggie I honestly would not care less since he no longer plays there.

I never condoned his partying antics, but griping about the MLB draft and the uniform is pretty must just looking to hate for absolutely zero reason. That wasn't directed at you obviously, since you didn't mention it.

Manziel's detractors have several good points:

+ Hasn't proved anything in the NFL
+ Hasn't really improved his image w/ constant partying (though being a college student, I really couldn't care less about this)
+ Constant ttention seeker

but complaining about a badge sewn onto a man's jersey? C'mon.

Also, I'm curious as to what kind of scandal you think Manziel could cause. As far as his current behavior has shown, he doesn't seem the Mike Vick/OJ Simpson/Ray Lewis type.

Hater? Because I answered a question? You might try getting over your need to interject unfounded personal comments.

No I don't think he is going to murder someone or dogs. He isn't a thug. Hopefully he is not out driving after one of his binges so he doesn't end up killing someone.

However other than that I think the sky is the limit with this guy.

I don't. What we're seeing right now, further proves that guy can very well be a franchise QB imo. He's got star power. People gravitate towards him. He was a college punk, didn't really do much at the time & was already rubbing elbows with Drake & LeBron.

Of course, he's got to be able to put it together on the field, or he's going to turn into Tebow, but right now... it is who he is. Some people thrive in the spot light. Some people shrink when the lights come on.

I wish the Texans were the kind of "people" that shine when everyone is looking at them. Or at least that we had a QB who looked for those situations. If Matt Schaub had JFF's swag, we'd have won two Super Bowls by now & appeared in three.

I'm not saying that Manziel is that guy, he still has to prove it on the field. But he reminds me of the brass QBs from way back when... Jim McMahon, Joe Cool... they just didn't have Twitter back then.

Hopefully he is not out driving after one of his binges so he doesn't end up killing someone.

That's a legit concern. I wonder why the papparazzi hasn't asked him about this, what does he think about drinking & driving & that sort of thing. I wonder why they haven't got pictures of him behind the wheel after such a binge.

I'd think that would sell a lot of papers, get a lot of clicks.

I guess but since there hasn't even been a DUI... I mean after all, what else is there to do in College Station but get wasted? :kitten:

The last serious bit of trouble he was in was that fighting thing back in the spring before his first season.

I think the media is blowing things out of proportion. Manziel is probably a publicity hound to a certain extent, but sometimes a 21 year old dude hanging out and having a good time is just that.

I think he will ultimately be defined by what he does or does not do on the field. If he's a great player, then all this partying is seen in the same way as "Broadway" Joe Namath. If he fails, then it becomes the reason he failed and a huge distraction.

But the TMZ-style reporting on ESPN and NFLN is really getting pathetic in it's sensationalism. "Johnny Manziel Gets a Beer" is just not interesting or newsworthy, but they will continue to 'report' it like we all need a daily update.

Hopefully he is not out driving after one of his binges so he doesn't end up killing someone...
Everything I read so far says he always has his people around him. He's young, blowing off some steam, but I think he's used to getting into the back seat.

Clowney goes out too. I saw him at a club downtown not too long ago.

One of Drakes body guards didn't know who he was and said he was gonna kick his ass if he didn't step back when he tried to shake Drake's hand. Clowney basically told him no he wasn't going to do that. Could have gotten ugly...but it didn't....

But...Clowney doesn't have as much interest in him as Manziel, so no one knows that and a lot of people there probably didn't know who Clowney was...not just the body guard.

Drakes BG does now watch the NFL how do u not know who clowney is he was the #1 overall pick

If Clowney continued to make hits like this even people who don't watch football would know who he is. Johnny made those types of plays every week. People who don't own TVs know who he is.

Sadly that would probably be a personal foul "helmet to helmet" penalty in the NFL.

Actually I don't think so. Between the tackles is different than outside, or in the open field. Someone will have to confirm that, but to my knowledge that is not considered a helmet to helmet hit because it's a running back in the tackle box.

New rule for 2014:

“It is a foul if a runner or tackler initiates forcible contact by delivering a blow with the top/crown of his helmet against an opponent when both players are clearly outside the tackle box (an area extending from tackle to tackle and from three yards beyond the line of scrimmage to the offensive team’s end line). Incidental contact by the helmet of a runner or tackler against an opponent shall not be a foul.”

Man you'd be surprised...

Sometimes I forget that not everyone is a football junky irl like people here are and I feel like I'm just humoring some people that talk about football stuff.

I know probably most people that post here regularly has talked football with people that say they like the NFL and they don't know stuff that people here know.

But with football players, because those guys wear helmets, sometimes casual fans don't recognize their face. My mom watches the NFL casually and when the Texans drafted Clowney she asked me who the guy was "with the cute smile"

A little humor always helps.

#Browns CB Justin Gilbert nearly picked off pass thrown by Johnny Manziel but couldn't secure. Walked up to Johnny & said, "You're welcome."

Thanks for verifying that. So that Clowney hit on the RB would not be a foul. It was clearly inside the tackle box and would be considered incidental contact of the helmets. Right?

Well, prior to 2014, it would have been a penalty. As to whether they rule that incidental contact, I think we've seen DBs get screwed on that several times. So I'm a little skeptical that they'd call it incidental. But hey, they could surprise me and hire Dick Butkus as a refereeing consultant.
