The Environment on this Board

Forgive me if the following observation is presumptuous or overly simplistic as I am relatively new to this board, but the current environment up here for the last couple of weeks has been, at times, frustrating. The major themes seem to be:

1. If you’re in favor of drafting Young then you’re either (a) a Longhorn homer; (b) a David Carr hater, or (c) both.

2. On the other hand, if you’re in favor of drafting Bush then you are football savvy and “a real fan”.

3. And finally, if you’re in favor of trading the pick and trying to bulk up some other need areas then your voice is pretty much drowned out by the other two.

The thing is, if you take a step back and look at the big picture there are very strong, compelling arguments for all three (no need to elaborate on them here). In the end the Texans “win” no matter which direction they go. It’s a great position that we’re in (which of course makes for some very interesting discussion regarding what is the best course).

My point with this post? The bottom-line is that all of us up here are big fans of the Texans or else we wouldn’t have registered in the first place, and we wouldn’t be wasting our time posting. We’re all proud of Houston and want to see the team represent the city well, regardless of who is QB, RB, coach, or otherwise. I wish we could keep this in mind, and maybe even be a little more open-minded when someone posts an opinion that differs from our own. We’re at a critical juncture in the team’s history, and in the end we all want the same thing.

Peace, and Go Texans!

I agree with ya.. some people will probably give you a hard time for making another "we are all fans" post.. but Id rather be drowned by these than drowned by more draft posts :).

The only people on this board that I have no patience with are the ones who wont support the team if we dont do what they want. Other than that.. you are right..there are good arguements for all three routes.

Personally, I find the Vince Young arguements weak... and I think that is where the arguements stem from. Its not that people cannot understand the arguements for going one route or the other.. its just that everyone is against at least one of the options because they feel it would be a bad move, so they loudly proclaim their personal preferance, and do their best to debunk the other. This leads to some pretty off the wall comments ..which leads to more loud proclamations..so on and so forth.

One thing that we can all take heart in is that we have a young coach coming in who, in 9 years coaching, has 3 superbowl rings and has run one of the most successful and long lasting offenses in the league. I think of all the coaches being hired..we got the cream of the crop..and I see us over .500 and competing for a playoff berth fairly quickly with him at the helm. I havent been this excited about my team since 2002 :)

I'm not a Longhorn or David Carr hater , He lives in my neighborhood, I love my Sienna folks! :)

I just hate to lose and I think the OL sucks but I really don't think DC is that great either. I think he's overrated and overpaid.

I personally want VY, but your right, we're in a win win situation. I don't care who is throwing the rock, as long as we can rescue this sinking ship!!:ok:

Sorry if this post is late to the party.

I'm personally glad to see someone else who recognizes the plus-plus-plus side of the end of the season. No matter what the team does, I believe there'll be major improvements all across the board.

no it must be vince!!! vince or nothing!!! if we don't get vince i am selling my tickets!! did you know vince went to UT? did you know vince is from houston? did you know vince wants to play for the texans??

this is the only argument i hate..i love the rest with actual points and references behind them

to quote a certain hoops guy from philly..."how-eva!!" it has made work pass by a lil faster with all the ridiculousness after the vince bowl

I'm glad you wrote this because I had a poster tell me the other day to stop wasting everyones time and to get off the board all because I had a differing opinion on what a leader was and because I wasn't a Carr fan. The funny reality of it is that I am not for drafting VY but I don't like Carr. Some how I got lumped into this Bush hater/VY lover like I had nothing redeeming to say. We can all learn from each other so having a differing opinion is not a sin. I have been watching football since the 70s and love to talk all things about it. We are all here for the same goal. It will be years before we find out if any of our opinions on the draft or in hiring comes to fruition.

Actually, there are a few of us that will be content with either one of the three options presented to us. (translated: they are all great choices!)

I've taken the position that since I'm powerless to influence the decision(s) in any way, shape, or form, then I'm not investing any emotional ties to the eventual outcome.

Because regardless of what happens, we're getting an upgrade from what we had in 2005. And in addition to that, we've got a whole new coaching staff!

As a Texans fans, I'm just stoked about our future now. I might have leanings one way or the other with regards to the Bush/Young/trade down debate, but it's nothing I'm going to defend to the death and/or refuse to grant valid arguments to the other choices.

At the end of the day, it's all good. :howdy: :texflag:

I started a post similar to this a week or so ago trying to make the point that no matter what we do in the draft we as fans win because we have football back in Houston and we have an owner that will do everything and anything to make this team a winner. Opinions and debates are great but that is all they are. In the end, if we want a team we have to support them in good times and in bad and whether we agree with all the decisions or not.

Great minds think alike, 'eh? :thumbup

I'm actually more optimistic about our future now than ever before. Which is kind of strange, when you consider we were 2-14, still don't have an official head coach, and are up in arms about our choices with our no. 1 draft pick.

But it's gonna' be alllll-right. :howdy:

I like what you had to say. Getting a new coach, new system and having top picks to fill out a team makes for an exciting time. Kind of like having the expansion franchise but with some discovered talent already in place.

This is my son's number in football so I just wanted to show my intermost fantasy. Oh yes, RETIREMENT! Just kidding, but that's his number and he LOVES the Texans and he's a born Jayhawker. I still got the Earl avatar if ya want to use it.

I have confidence that our FO will make the best decision for the future of the franchise.

Let's sing together: We are the world, we are the children.... just kidding. I agree with the original poster. I think so many of us get caught up in a world where we live our lives to some extent thru others. It may be athletes, actors, performers or others. Often we may not be able to voice our opinion at work or in our socializing. You may get ridiculed by some ***** on the internet, but you can't get "punched out". Some of the responses remind me of Little League games I used to watch when my son was MUCH younger. The kids wanted to just have fun and learn a little. Often, moms and dad's were having screaming fits leading to coronary attacks. It is ok IMO to vest in sports and other forms of "entertainment" but that should be all it is.

I understand where your going with this one, and half of me says your right, the other half says no. For weeks and weeks, Bush was the talk here. It was either we need Bush or not. But there were very little VY homers and the ones that are still with him, this is not intended toward yall. But, VY wasn't even a breath of air on here or even the talk in Houston. The talk was getting David better protection all season. It seems to me that no one remembers right after the Texas Aggie game, what VY did. Nothing!!! He was shut down, lost the Heisman race, and scouts were saying he just isn't ready for the NFL. Then he faces a terrible CU team, and went on to the Rose Bowl where he faced a crappy Defense there too. His performance was amazing, but he will not be a great QB in the NFL with what he did in the rose Bowl. What in the hell would you think will happen to him behind our line this past year? The bottom line is.....One game and he won over the freaking world. What happened if he would have played a game like he did against Texas A&M? It would have been.....He needs to stay, he can't come out.

It just makes me sick to see so many people who have no clue about football, watch one game, and now think he is the savior. I personally would like RB, because I do not care too much for DD. It isnt his running style, because I believe that to be fine, it is his lack of explosiveness. It is like he has one speed and it isn't very fast.

It is this simple......You can not ditch David Carr, when for the last 4 years, he has had no protection. You take Bush or trade the pick, I would be happy with either. You do not select a *******ING QB when this Franchise hasn't given him the chance to suceed. If you still want VY after reading this, then you just dont get it. You do not know football. Is VY a step up from Carr, NO! Is Bush a step up from Davis? Well no kidding!

Just give Carr a damn chance with a real coach and a revamped O-Line. By the way, those who think that VY will run all over Defenses in the NFL, wait till that ignorant kid meets a guy by the name of Brian Urlacher!!!! Damn, that's going to hurt!!!!

Nuff Said!!!

Agreed.

I am wondering when the words "mancrush" and "brokeback" will eventually get banned like the variation of Ligerheart was when people were particularly displeased with Carr.

Reasonable minds can disagree about what the right thing to do, but it ain't a bad year to have the first pick:

My incomplete list of pros and cons

y'know, Herv, I started feeling like that last weekend when it dawned on me that football season is almost over. It's sort of a desperate feeling, like a void is about to enter life....speaking of which, guess it's time now to get a life since football 2005 is drawing to a close.

The offseason is going to be like a big huge soap opera, or better yet an NFL reality based TV show. We've got the combine coming up, Free agency, the draft and then June cuts coming up. Race home and catch Sportscenter, you won't want to miss a day in Texansville.

well dont get too depressed about the offseason. With a new head coach..and new coordinators..and new assistants.. we will at least have something to talk about this year. We will have time to analyze Kubiak's offense to see what it will be like.. see if we have all the components to make it work and what we will need. Then we will have (possibly) the 4-3 defense to go over..and whatever DC we have running it. Should be more interesting than last year where all we had to talk about was Derrick Johnson.

You are what you eat, that is why Vince Young's diet consists entirely of bricks, steel, and the tears of small children.

Vince Young is not lactose intolerent, he just refuses to put up with lactose's ****.

Crop circles are Vince's way of telling the world that sometimes corn needs to lie the **** down.

Vince Young invented black. In fact, he invented the entire spectrum of visible light. Except pink. Reggie Bush invented pink.

Vince Young covers his Slip 'n' Slide with gravel.

Vince Young never shaves; he shoots himself in the face every morning so his facial hair doesn't get the wrong idea.

When the Boogeyman goes to sleep every night he checks his closet for Vince Young.

Vince Young uses e before i as he pleases.

Same thing I've said.

Good to see there's more smart people like myself around here.

I'm in the "Trade the pick and get the 'Brick" camp...

...but I am beginning to see that Bush/Young/Trade Pick is going to make for an exciting environment no matter which one the team chooses.

The gloom and doomers (Young or Bush) who say this team is finished if THEIR GUY isn't picked is sometimes frustrating, but I realize they are just passionate about their guy AND this Texans team...so they want what's best for their guy AND for this Texans team.

Relax, and go see the Bills message board where they are discussing Capers who was recently interviewed for the head coach job up there. That's gotta' be a Marv Levy call if you ask me.

(chuckling)

Can you see Capers and Marv Levy at a press conference to announce him as HC? Might as well get Bob Dole there, too. "Hey! We're going to win the Super Bowl! Errr...wait a second, I think my hip just cracked in the cold weather up here....anybody got some icy hot?...."

This season reminds me of getting the wind knocked out of you. You know when you aren't expecting it? You get this real sick feeling, and then it just seems to linger for a long *** time. And I think because we all have this sick feeling that's lingering around, that more or less reflects the environment of this board. I mean, I know I don't like it when I get the wind knocked out of me, does anyone else. JMO.

Lucid and to the point. We do not see much of that on these boards.
It seems like there is a whole lot of people who like to hear themselves talk.
It is nice to see someone actually make the point and supply a argument to support it.

Grid once again you have cut through the BS and illuminated the situation,
