The "Big Boys" get their legs ...

Now that the “Big Boys” of the 2004 draft (going into the draft, it was generally accepted that the top RBs were Steven Jackson and Kevin Jones) have gotten their legs under them, I thought it would be interesting to see how they stack up against a few other young backs, particularly Domanick Davis.

In addition, from time to time posters complain that the Texans aren’t fairly treated by the media. The implication of this is that some players are hyped more than a Texan player, even if their numbers don’t match those of the Texan player.

In comparing the four RBs, Domanick Davis is a two time 1,000 yard rusher and Rookie of the Year. Only Kevin Jones appears capable of matching his 1,000 rushing season this year.

Domanick Davis has the second best rushing average over the last three game (4.8) trailing Steven Jackson (5.2), but leading both Kevin Jones (4.6) and Julius Jones (3.2).

Domanick Davis has also been the most productive of four in the last three games with 507 combined rushing and receiving yards. Kevin Jones has 401 combined yards, Steven Jackson has 372 combined yards and Julius Jones has 264 yards.

Domanick Davis also has 3 rushing touchdowns over the last three games, the same as Steven Jackson. Kevin Jones and Julius Jones only have 1.

Domanick Davis has been a productive back for the Texans, with over 3,000 combined yards (2,108 rushing and 905 receiving yards) and 21 touchdowns. It will be interesting to see how the Texans approach the RB position in the offseason.
 
personally i think he has proved to this team and the organization that he can be our starting running back of the future, and i would be really suprised if he came into next season not the starter ! He has talent and was a steal in the draft !
 
Cleveland has given up 145.2 yards rushing per game, 4.3 ypc and 21 rushing TD's this year (tied with San Fran for worst in the league)--any guesses on the game plan for this week?
 
One big question I have is how they will use Hollings, if at all. Should they get a good look at Hollings and not push Davis? Is Hollings healthy (I believe he saw ST time against the Jags)?
 
lets not forget that quote from palmer about hollings getting 5-10 touches per game...i know that was rehashed in here a thousand times in training camp...whats changed if anything?
 
i guess that was taken out of context, when he said 5-10 touches, he meant touches as in 5-10 times he would give high fives to other players on the bench.
 
The only question mark against DD is durability. Just might have been a bit of bad luck and hopefully he will prove to be more durable than he has demonstrated so far.

I think some posters have more question marks than durability, but let me go back to the comparison. How many of the 2004 drafted backs have played in every game? Is Domanick Davis the only RB to miss some time this year?

I think it centers on durability and his ability to produce when nicked up and the fact that he wasn't very good when playing with minor injuries. The NFL season is just too short and Davis had a horrid strech this year when he wasn't 100%

Personally, I think Dom is a nice little back and can be good enough IF he is 100%, but you can't post your hopes on this multi-million dollar franchise playoff hopes on a guy who gives you such varied production in 1/3rd of your games. We need to get another back. I think Dom has a role here...but so does another feature back.

I agree with improving the RBs along with most other units of the team.

We may resign some of our UFAs and still have an opportunity for a new FA, or two. To be honest, I don't feel I have enough of a handle on the cap to really predict it. I think the Texans like Lamont Jordan, but I don't know about the Jets ability to lock him down, or the Texans ability to sign him.

The other opportunity to improve our RBs is through the draft, but one conclusion to draw from Steven Jackson, Kevin Jones, Chris Perry, Tatum Bell and Julius Jones is that you can't necessarily count on them stepping in and giving you 16 quality games as a rookie. I would however agree that you can draft a RB looking to improve your unit beyond the first year. The problem with investing a high draft choice on a RB is that typically, RBs have shorter careers IMO and using a impact draft choice on a RB means you can't use that pick to get an impact player at another position.

It feels like this will be an interesting unit to watch in the offseason.

I think Lamont wants to be the #1 back, so I don't think he would give us much attention.

Who would be the #1 RB if Lamont Jordan signed with the Texans?

a) DD?
b) Hollings?
c) Lamont Jordan?
d) no one ... it would be a committee?

DD would, IMO. Why would Jordan even want the competition though? He could go to Arizona, Miami, Oakland, or Tampa, and be handed the job.
 
With the way DD has played lately it makes it hard to think we need another RB. All I know is Hollings better not be taking up a roster spot next season. Right now, I would get rid of Hollings, and keep Wells. All the Wells haters don't even exist anymore.

Some of those teams will look to draft on of the top RBs this year ... Benson, Brown, Williams, etc.
 
From what I've read, Dom wants a big, Stacey Mack-type back to wear down defenses. He would like to implement a combination similar to Staley/Bettis in Pittsburgh. I think that Wells can be that guy, but he is not getting the touches for some reason.
 
One huge advantage Wells has as part of a committee of RBs is that he's a respected Special Teams player IMO. Again, to be insurance on game day, you have to dress (45 men +1 QB) and it's huge if you are not a liability on ST.

If the Texans get a new RB (draft, or FA), will they dress 4 RBs on game day, or does somebody have to go?

I could see the Texans either:

a) getting another RB (draft or FA) and dressing either DD, or Hollings, along with Wells and new guy (this would address the situation identified by Vinny where DD is productive unless he is dinged (ie don't dress him), or perhaps you prefer to say DD isn't durable). Perhaps this would allow DD to return kicks; or

b) get another RB, but a low draft pick who is essentially a prospect, who makes the 53, but doesn't dress early in the season, or until there is an injury.
