Texans vs Vikings AAR

BattleRedBlud

Blue Steel Pose. No Excuses!
All I heard leading up to the season was no one could defend the 5 headed monster of Diggs, Collins, Dell, Schultz and Mixon. Seems pretty easy so far.

Our vaunted D can't even defend the one headed monster of Justin Jefferson.

This team was talked up.....and not they, and we along with them, are humbled.

WRs and TEs have to get open vs great D but oline has to give them chance to get open and Stroud time to release. That didn't happen.

We were missing a BIG head there in Mixon.

Ouch. That was a rough game to watch. Lets break it down and see if the good guys will learn from it next time.

What went well:

1) Pass rush. They were getting to Darnold regularly. Had this been a close game they could have forced some mistakes and turned Darnold into a pumpkin.

2) Run defense. Outside of the 39 yard gain by Aaron Jones the run defense was stout yet again. This is the most surprising aspect of the team to me three games into the season.

3) Getting Diggs involved in the offense. Diggs was a big part of the game plan this week and he performed. 10 catches 94 yards and one completed pass. He is a valuable safety net to slow down the opposing team’s pass rush. Nico had some chunk plays as well.

What did not go well:

1) This can obviously be a long list. the biggest issue on this team are the penalties! 11 penalties 88 yards (not including the ones Vikings declined). Too many drive killing unforced errors by the OL took away whatever momentum the offense would build up in the first half and kill the drive. They got away with it last week but got put in a hole early and just kept digging a deeper hole as the game continued. It is inexcusable to have the number of false starts and illegal formations this team had today.

2) Plan for Justin Jefferson. They shut Jefferson out in the second half, but I think that was mainly game script. But he was not challenged in the first half and put up 81 yards and a td. It seemed like the Texans were so worried about allowing a big play that they were content giving him a free path to the first down markers in the first half.

3) Run game and pass protection. Blocking needs to improve. C.J. was getting hammered. No reason Stover should be one on one with Greenard.

4) Teams have decided to take away the deep ball this season. This opens up other opportunities and the offense needs to adjust. Getting Diggs rolling this week is a good start. But they need to get the run game and play action pass going. Besides that they have to stop the drive killing penalties!

Defenses have decided that Houston can’t sustain long drives and have sold out to stop the big chunk plays we became accustomed to seeing last season. They know Houston’s OL is undisciplined and will commit penalties to stall the drive. There needs to be players benched if this continues to happen. If C.J. is getting hit, you can’t run the ball AND you’re getting penalized… why are you on the field as a starting OL?

I love DeMeco Ryans. I trust his coaching. Today's loss was just one of those games that got away early and everybody is to blame. To the way they covered Justin Jefferson to Slowik's inability to adjust to Brian Flores' defense. All the penalties wiped away several big plays too.

The positive, it’s better to take a loss like this rather than in the playoffs. Humbling experience.

Not interested in listing “positives”. Nothing from a performance standpoint was positive today. Coaches, players all sucked eggs today.

Negatives. The penalties. That 1 drive in the 1st half where we single-Handedly took ourselves out of makeable FG range with 3 consecutive penalties had me yelling at my TV…and I haven’t done that in years. Tunsil…they gotta start docking this dudes pay or something b/c he’s good for 2 false start penalties a game. And today was as bad as ever. Also…Howard is ass. I’m about ready to move on.

it’s still early, but they don’t seem to know what they wanna be right now. All the weaponry we have on the outside and Slowik doesn’t seem to want to utilize it. We also work out of shotgun way too much. We had problems handling the noise today and part of the issue today when working out of shotgun is the line can’t hear you as well. 1 obvious thing that could’ve been done is bring CJ out of the shotgun and under center more…closer to the line. They finally did it in the 2nd half but the damage had already been done. Where were the quick hitting pass plays? Seems like after the 1st pick, Slowik abandoned it for most of the 1st half. Fans are referencing the jets game from last year as the performance this game most resembles. In that game we were down quite a few impact players and it was a steady rain that effected things. To me this game most resembles the 1st Baltimore game b/c we were just out of sync from the get go all game and just no semblance of anything.

defensively, I think they settled down in the middle portion of the game and gave the offense a chance to get their **** together. But I think the fact that we got down so fast and couldn’t get going offensively didn’t allow Meco and co. to get to some more aggressive calls that they would’ve liked to. Eventually they just got worn down from being on the field so long.

I agree with this. Plus Stroud didn't have his best day today.

Truth is this was a team collapse, offense/defense/ST's/coaching etc... I said last week that if Ryans couldn't get the penalties cleaned up they would lose. I thought he would get this cleaned up, I was wrong. I also said Stroud couldn't turn the ball over against Flores exotic defenses. He turned the ball over.

The Defense made Darnold look like Brady.

I couldn’t believe a Coach Cap’s team would be so freaking undisciplined through three games. This time that undisciplined crap caught up to them. Hopefully they actually learn from their many mistakes.

Better get it together or it’s going to be a long season.

Laremy Tunsil has to be the stupidest football player in the history of the NFL. What is he going to do after he retires? What other skills besides trying to play football could he possibly have?

Im not blaming the refs. Our downfall was self inflicted wounds but how do they miss this? Phillips puts his hands to Tytus face to get off the block and tackles Cj

Ofc tunsil just stands there while his man pursues the qb

Letting Jefferson get free releases all day was baffling. If you believe in Sting, play him in press coverage with help over the top if he gets by you. But just playing off coverage against this guy was arguably the dumbest decision DeMeco has made as HC. And yes I know Burke is the DC but we know who makes that kind of call. He played defense like he was afraid to lose…something I never thought I’d see out of Ryans. He gets an F from me. Bobby also gets an F. And so does Strausser.

He must have had the mask on before the game

Tunsil's salary and respect around the league as an excellent pass blocker might be partially due to him false starting. I've seen over the years Tunsil moving back in pass coverage before the snap numerous times and not get called for it. I think to myself, "boy he got lucky there." Win or lose, Tunsil's false starts grates on my nerves. The guy is thick in the head.

Easily LT worst game, hopefully next week he could atleast minimise his mistakes. I expect better from one of our best players

After watching each team's first series, I knew this was going to be an L. The team, as a whole, looked unprepared. But it was the dumb decisions that sealed it for me.

Stover one on one with Greenard? That's only going to end one way. Letting Jefferson run unchecked all over the field, culminating in him being one on one with Eric Murray in the end zone? Baffling.

If that's how they were going to start, the finish was obvious. I don't know what the hell they were thinking with their game plan. It was never going to work.

I was looking forward to the LSU match up. Silly me thought putting our best corner on Jefferson would be a good choice.

i think he would make a -great- sports agent.

*shrugs*

I don't feel like it gets talked about enough but we very simply suck every single time we're in a loud building.

I was hoping the team would be able to fix it this offseason but if anything they're just as bad or potentially even worse.

It was more than baffling, it was insanely stupid by our defensive coordinator n staff.

Exactly they went into this game scared AF.

Why does he have to do anything After the millions pocketed?

No one has mentioned, but I think Tank Dell looked pretty good.

I am concerned that Stingley's lisfranc may be impacting his last 2 games. The cushion may be to aid him.

The entire team gets an F.

Another call the refs missed. Clear offsides

just rewatching some plays, stover might not be an nfl tight end
They planned to bring Stover along VERY slowly, week 1 he only saw the field on running downs, Schultz on the injury report for 2 weeks and the loss of Bevin Jordan meant they were forced to accelerate him, but they had a few things they could do well with Stover while they taught him the rest of the game, and now he is getting shown up for the rookie he is.

Got cha. Jordan season ending injury put him in this spot. I expect him to grow and get better. He’s a rookie at the end of the day. You can’t expect them to block elite pass rushers unless there a phenomenal talent. Regardless if he killed the first 2 drives momentum, slowik has to do a better job with these star studded receivers. Makes no sense to only have 7 points even if Mixon isn’t playing

Thank God for Seth! This rant was necessary for my soul. I feel like such an idiot for giving up my disdain for Tunsil this preseason. What the **** was I thinking?! He is the epitome of a soulless player. F*ck HIM! That being said, it is also clear that CnD's warnings about Howard's health was dead on... Shaq Mason all of sudden is too old and disinterested in football... And, just like in week one (also an away game with Scruggs at center) there was clearly some kind of "tell" that the defense has on him, or possibly Kenyon Green, regarding the timing of the silent snap count. I have never seen a defense so consistently beat the OLine off the ball as they did day today... and for a big chunk of that Indy game.

Tunsil's lack of accountability is so freakin' appalling... I am concerned that this coaching staff that I fell in love with could lose the team if they continue to trot these unaccountable bums out there week after week. They had better call these f*ckers out and prepare to bench and/or replace them soon if they do not fix A LOT!... starting with the 2 tackles.

The entire team gets an F.
I agree, that the team as a whole, earned an "F." They looked less prepared and flat. However, I think the primary culprits... the bums were: the entire OL, but I would certainly grade the high paid vets more harshly (Mason, Howard, Tunsil). Also, the softest TE in the NFL: Dalton Schulz... and the offensive coaching staff.

Defensively it wasn't good either. However, they gave up less than 300 yards for the game. They only gave up one scoring drive in the first half... They just got bested by a good offense and were unable to make the big play to flip the momentum. However, I think the defensive performance looks quite different if the offense doesn't lay an egg.

Regarding TE: can anyone explain to me how the offense is better with Schultz in the game rather than Robert Woods. Woods is a better blocker, has better hands... frankly, across the board, despite the fact that he is a WR, he is better than Schultz at every aspect of what a TE is asked to do.

The offense would've been better today with Blake Fisher at LT and Broecker at RT. I realize the absurdity of that statement. I know how difficult it would be for a rookie to be thrown in a LT and a journeyman guard to be at RT... However, the tape doesn't lie: Howard and Tunsil are playing football worse right now than inexperienced Rookies and journeymen interior linemen. That's what they are putting on film.

Tunsil's paycheck for this week's game was what? about $1.5 million for today's effort?

Tunsil can take a long walk off a short pier. He has been on my **** list for years. Finally (most) of the rest of you have caught up to me. He’s everything I’ve been saying for years and probably even more. He is by far the biggest problem on the 53. I know this sounds crazy, but if I am Nick I seriously consider dumping him for whatever I can get in a trade. It’s addition by subtraction. The guy is literally dragging the entire team down. What a horrible horrible trade this guy was. The fins were laughing at BOB all the way to the bank.

Based on what's going on with Tua, i doubt they're laughing anymore. Tunsil isn't Trent Williams, but he's still amongst the top at his position and false starts aside, i'd still rather have him protecting my franchise qb's blindside.

Or have you forgotten about the revolving door of Kendall Lamm, Julien Davenport, Chris Clark, Jeff Allen & Geron Christian taking turns getting our QBs injured and/or laid out on the field having siezures......ironically, Kendall Lamm was starting for the Dolphins at LT when Tua was knocked out of the game from his latest concussion. you can't make this stuff up.

No thanks.

So, your theory is it's either put up with the bullshit artist known as Tunsil, or end up with a terrible LT with two left feet and one arm? Because it seems to me there is a middle ground. A solid dude that balls out, has a great attitude and gives max effort instead of some lazy stoner with a who cares attitude to match and who apparently cannot count.

Some teams don't put up with bullshit. The Chiefs benched their rookie LT Kingsley Suamatiai (SP?) in favor of Wanya Morris against Atlanta - drafted in the 3rd round last year, and they won the game and Pat was fine.

Oh cut it out. There’s little to no evidence that LT is any of those things you’re describing him as except a picture/video taken of him when he was in college; lord forbid anyone took video of me drinking a beer in college as I’d be labeled a drunk by people like you. Dudes been a model player since he’s been here, no trouble, not even a suspension…oh and he’s been a pro bowler for 4 straight years. Literally the only thing to complain about him is his penchant for false start penalties. Yesterday was an apex.

And Only in fans’ heads is there a middle ground. Most NFL folks know better. U cited 1team who just happens to have the best QB on the planet playing for them…and they just did that last night…and they had really no appreciable difference in play from the offense. Mahomes was still back there running around like he always does.

Besides, Howard to me is the bigger problem.

Could not disagree more with this. If your model is a lazy don't give a damn stoner, who throws his teammates under the bus, isn't a leader, isn't physical, has a bad attitude, is selfish, can't count, can't run block for ****, and who lives off of the fact that he has naturally good feed and athleticism - he's your guy. As for me - I'd give him an apple and a roadmap and a one-way ticket on a bus to Splittsville.

His act was wearing thin on me three years ago....now we have irreconcilable differences that are permanent. If I was lucky enough to be in the GM seat, the only thing we're fighting over now is compensation from the team I'm trading him to, or I'd just cut him outright to make a statement to his teammates that his kind of bullshit will not be tolerated. This team needs dawgs not one-trick show ponies looking for their their next phat paycheck.
