Texans vs Bears AAR

If I have anything negative to say about Ryans it is the number of penalties the Texans commit. Last year Stroud and the boys could overcome negative yardage so it did not seem as bad as it was. We were the 4th worst in the league last year & so far we are on pace to equal it this year. Imagine how good the Texans would be if we got a first down or touchdown on the first try. I remember last year against the Steelers having to score a TD 3 times before it counted.

2023 - This is only enforced penalties. Does not include offsetting or declined penalties.
114 penalties for 937 yards.
4th worst in the league.

2024 - This is only enforced penalties. Does not include offsetting or declined penalties.
17 penalties for 145 yards through 2 games.
Once again tied with 2 other teams as 4th worst in the league.

Hopefully the young players will learn how to play with controlled aggression. And the pro bowl LT will learn to only false start every other game.

Almost everything wrong with the offense can be summed up with two words: Tytus Howard!
He is very stiff, lacking balance and quickness... He is basically flailing and lunging at defenders... I don't know that we have ever had worse play from a RT in consecutive weeks (and yes, I realize how bold a statement that is, but Howard's tape this season is BRUTAL)

Yet he allowed no sacks nor did Tunsil. IMO it was our middle three that was the problem. I am giving Patterson a break as first game starter. All of those usually allow three or four games for the same set five
Was sooooooo glad they overturned that call on Pitre? Or Lassiter…. I think. On the WR…. Dude just smacked him legally, hard as hell. I could see it from my seat, and the ref that threw the flag was like just 10 yards away from the play!
I do not blame the ref for throwing the flag but it was good to see it overturned.

I’m getting tired of Tunsil’s FS’s on crucial 3rd downs. Howard is a waste. As I mentioned in another post, it may not be a bad idea to work Fisher in at RT and move Howard to Swing Tackle. Howard isn’t worth the money, and keeping CJ healthy is the priority over his contract.

I think I heard Scruggs was planning to start, but was eventually held out….which in turn, gave Patterson less time to prepare with the starting group. I wish they had made the decision earlier to give him the max reps in preparation for the game.
I had not heard that about Scruggs starting..
Interesting.

Oh for sure… I’m glad the flag thrower was overturned. It was a legit clean hit

I am thinking that Howard's play impacted Mason at Right Guard as well as Mason having to play next to Patterson with his first game start this season.

Makes you miss ol what’s his name…
Winston I think
Howard played guard damn near all last season didn’t he? He was drafted as a tackle wasn’t he? Whatever…. He needs to get better
Winston was pretty good in the run game, not so much in pass pro. You knew a holding call was coming which is much worse than Tunsil's false starts

Winston was serviceable.. Plus run blocker. Todd Wade was absolute trash here.

And yet with all our complaining, rightfully so, the Texans are 4-point favorites.
That is as puzzling to me as PFF. I would not rank either the Bears or Colts at the level of San Francisco.

I remember that off-season, ESPN projected their top 5 NFL FA signings.. Both Todd Wade and RoBaire Smith were in the top 5, both were signed by the Texans, and both were absolutely HORRIBLE.
Seemed to be the real story of the Texans’ first decade as a franchise, signing FAs that were meant to fix a position and them being awful, and that leading to a lot of first round busts due to poor leadership around them.

Fairbairn wasn’t automatic like this last season. That was his longest of his career. So let’s not act like he’s hitting that on a regular. That false start by Tunsil was bad and I don’t care how SB tries to spin it.
No spin, just facts.

No harm was done.

The Niners had a bad game and the Vikes had a good one. That happens. Any given Sunday.
The 9ers did have a bad game whether self imposed or a result of the Vikings. The Vikings blocked a punt which led to a score. Also on back to back possessions the 9ers failed to convert on 4th and 2. The first one of those was at the Vikings 2 yard line and led to the 97yd TD pass to Jefferson. Purdy also threw an INT deep in their own territory which led to another Vikings score. Both teams also lost a fumble. The Vikings did beat the 9ers the in 2023 by a similar score, so maybe they have their number? Reagrdless, if we play smart football we can beat the Vikes. I'd also probably use some sort of bracket coverage on Jefferson.

Is jefferson going to play and if he does is his play going to be compromised?

That's interesting, I'm curious in terms of how those penalties break down (ie. holding, pass interference, etc.) If you have a link to that data, I'd like to check it out.
