Texans vs Bears AAR

After Action Report Week 2. Texans are 2-0! Two game division lead to start the year is great! But there are things to talk about…

What went well:

1) Pass rush. 7 sacks and many more QB hits! The defensive game plan was similar to last week. Focus on keeping the QB in the pocket, don’t let him create off script. And for the most part it worked. The wrinkle added for Williams was the blitzing. They showed a stat that they had called a blitz on 41% of the Bears plays at one point which was the most in DeMeco’s career. The extra pressure worked. Williams was under duress all night and those 50 yard bombs from last week were not to be found.

2) Nico Collins. He had another stellar game. Basically the engine of the offense tonight. When CJ made a big play, Nico was the recipient. What a player!

3) Run defense. Held Taylor under 50 yards last week and 3 ypc. Held the Bears to 71 rushing yards including 18 yards on 14 carries for Swift. Williams had a 24 yard scramble but on designed run plays the Texans shut them down.

4) Kaimi!!! Historic start to the NFL season for our kicker. I wouldn’t want another kicker in the league right now, he is automatic!

What did not go well:

1) Penalties!!! 12 penalties for 115 yards is inexcusable. There are not many teams you can beat with that many penalties. Just inexcusable sloppy football that kept this game close.

2) Second half offense. Where were they? Outside of Aker’s big string of runs prior to his fumble the offense went MIA once Mixon went down. There is too much talent for that to happen. It felt like they were playing not to lose in the second half. I think the worst play call was at the end of the game when the Bears did not call a timeout and they had to run one more play before the two minute warning they did the turtle shell run with Dare. Why not pass? If it’s incomplete then the clock was gonna stop anyway. But you get a first down then the game is basically over. Go for the win!

3) Pass protection. I know Patterson was in there over Scruggs but I don’t see that as a significant drop off. Stroud got sacked 3 times. 4 times last week. It’s not going to get any easier with a Flores defense next week. The OL needs to gel fast.

4) Tank Dell. I hate to say it but this was his worst game as a pro. Had the big run to start the game but dropped a potential td and overall just was not a factor tonight. He’s too talented to be shut down like that even against a good defense. After the 18 yard run he had 2 carries for -2 yards and 1 catch -3 yards.

Nice summation.
They definitely have some things to work on and like you say, the Vikes next week will be a real test for this team.

Dell definitely lost a step since his injury.
I don’t think that’s the issue. He got separation on the dropped pass that likely would’ve been a td. Just generally out of sync tonight. There was also one on the sideline, looked like a tough grab but its one you’d expect Tank to make.

The designed runs after the big one felt forced and the Bears weren’t letting that happen twice.

He looked terrible last week also.

Where was Diggs?
Diggs did his part. I was at the game and didn’t see him drop a single pass that went his way. I did get up to go get a sliced brisket baked potato with 3+ minutes left to go in the second quarter though. Not sure what happened then as I wasn’t near a tv screen while I was stuck in that slow moving line. I wasnt happy to see that Killens BBQ is no longer being sold at NRG. Truth BBQ is the new vendor and I am NOT impressed!

We have a lot to clean up indeed.

12 penalties for 115 yards not playing discipline football at all.

Offensive line was losing a lot in the trenches. The Bears front was stuffing our running game and applying massive heat on CJ causing 3 sacks and quite of few miscues.

Man they were missing Scruggs big time because Patterson looked lost out there and he was getting abused.

I was so glad Meco matched the Bears defensive energy by bringing the heat on that rookie. After the first couple series Coach Cap took the gloves off and started blitzing Caleb. I even seen them boys run quite a few stunts. That pressure caused 2 interceptions and we sacked Caleb 7 times.

Fairbairn new nickname is, “ MONEY”. Dude was big time last night for us. My MVP of the game.

The game wasn’t what we expected, it was ugly. But hey we won and that’s all that matters. I’m confident they’ll workout all of the chinks we have in the armor.

This game was too close for comfort but that is a good thing as it shows the players and the coaches they have work to do to be competitive in the post season.
The game should have and would have been put away if Akers hadn't coughed up the ball on the 1 yard line.
Let's call this one a "character builder".

Second week in a row the game should have been a blowout victory. But the Texans kept their opponent around and made it harder on themselves.

You are right about that and that ain't no joke !
OK we are 2-0 and we had better be 2-0 against those two teams but now the schedule starts
to get challenging. Early on when I saw the game on the road vs the Vikings I figured there's a road game we should win.
With them knocking off the 49ers this now stacks up as our first real challenge in a bad-azz
2024 schedule: buckle up Texans fans !

2nd half offense felt way too Obrianesque.

Agreed with what went well and hope Ryans keeps up the aggressiveness.

What went wrong

1. Agreed

2. Losing Mixon really hurt. They didn't go into a shell, but couldn't move the ball on sustained drives because the Bears front 7 was better than the Texans OL/TE groups. The Bears are going to have a top 5 defense this yr if they can stay healthy. They've got playmakers at all levels. I thought the same thing at the time at the two minute warning. Slowik screwed that up IMHO. Still if Dell catches the ball he dropped and Akers doesn't fumble the offense puts up 30 pts on a very good defense.

3. Dell had a terrible night, He's a playmaker, hopefully last night was a one off.

This game is over at 26-10 IF Akers holds onto the rock. I still like Akers as the #2. I think he brings more to the table than Pierce, but that didn't help. BTW - Pierce fumbled multiple times in the RZ in 2022 so it's not like Pierce never fumbles either. Just really bad timing there for Akers. Otherwise, he looked pretty good against a very very good Bears D.

Ok it's one game each granted, so I'm not going to bury the guy, but based on the limited sample of one game each, Scruggs is far superior to Patterson at Center. Get well big guy.

Overall, I have no major qualms with the offensive gameplan. They got quite creative...possibly a little too cute a couple of times but all in all - good. But I do have one issue. You can put a dagger in them as you are nearing the 2 minute mark. Running the rock isn't going to matter in terms of time. And you have CJ, who very rarely throws a pick. He's not wild and makes great decisions with the ball, and he is precise in placement. So, why on earth are you going turtle shell and running the ball against a front that is expecting it and is one of the best in football? Nonsensical. Take the kill shot there Bobby!

A win is a win is a win! Happy as hell to be 2-0!

Thanks for the food review.

No sarcasm here.

Good post,

Agreed about Patterson, I thought he would be almost as good as Scruggs. He went up against a NT in Billings that was a state weight lifting champion and a very good run stopper. Patterson was punching above his weight class.

Agreed about everything else in your post. The Texans offense has a lot of new guys and when you're playing against a defense as good as the Bears defense you're going to have some issues. Hopefully they get the kinks worked out. However if a couple of plays that were there to be made had been made we would be looking at the offense in a different light this morning, although we probably shouldn't be. I'm just glad that this yrs team is good enough to overcome 12 penalties, dropped passes, fumbles, losing Scruggs, Mixon and still almost put up 20 points and have the defense carry the team. That's the sign of a true contender, they can win games in many different ways.

I think much ado is being made over the penalties. The Texans had 12 which is an obscene amount of course but the Bears had 9 themselves… therefore… I don’t believe they were favoring one team over another.

I do question the constant holds on Hunter and Anderson. So many of them resulted with their arms around their necks but they’re big boys. They can handle themselves so I’ll nitpick officiating elsewhere. They pretty much let the guys play. I mean… two skirmishes that resulted in hands being inserted within the facemask… a punch…. and nobody was ejected. So I think they just let them play. It was good to not have so many ejections or wild referee interference.

3. Dell had a terrible night, He's a playmaker, hopefully last night was a one off.
Hopefully the one off was last night and not last season!

The unsportsmanlike penalties absolutely kicked our ass, and Tunsil again with his False Starts...so many Chicago 3rd and 4th and longs that penalties on us gave them 1st downs on.

We're getting good, but the team is starting to play undisciplined football. Maybe all the recent attention is getting to their heads. Coach needs to knock them down a few rungs and fix that like NOW.

The good news is, we'd have lost that game in the past.

Remember last season? 0 - 2?
I'm hoping they knocked a bit of rust and flip a switch for week 3 - a la 2023

I know what you mean but the Pitre hit was -not- a helmet to helmet.
It was close enough though. If he's going to play on that razors edge, he's going to get burned more often than not. He could have just as easily tackled him a bit lower and had the same result without the penalty.
The league doesn't want tackles being made that high and the coaches need to make him understand that.

Tunsil's false starts didn't hurt a thing.

One didn't hurt because they got a 1st down after the false start IIRC. After the 2nd false start, Fairbarin kick a FG. So they had no impact on the game. However this is one of many things that needs to be cleaned up.

The last sentence tells me the the Texans are true contenders.

Wrong, Fairbairn saved his ash making that 59 yarder, which is difficult for most kickers to make.

There were two big moments the Texans failed to capitalize on in this game - the first, unfortunately, Tank missed a pass from CJ that likely ended up in a TD
The second, Akers turned the ball over in the shadows of the goalposts with downs in hand.
Iow, Texans had a couple more chances but could not cash in.
This will change.

All in a day’s work for kickers like Fairbairn or Tucker. They are not most kickers. We knew we could rely on them.
Fairbairn wasn’t automatic like this last season. That was his longest of his career. So let’s not act like he’s hitting that on a regular. That false start by Tunsil was bad and I don’t care how SB tries to spin it.

No it wasn’t. He’s kicked a 61 yarder. He is MONEY when it comes to kicks that are 50+ yards. ESPECIALLY over the past 4 seasons.

Almost everything wrong with the offense can be summed up with two words: Tytus Howard!
He is very stiff, lacking balance and quickness... He is basically flailing and lunging at defenders... I don't know that we have ever had worse play from a RT in consecutive weeks (and yes, I realize how bold a statement that is, but Howard's tape this season is BRUTAL)

I get your point, but I think he was trying to jar the ball loose. That used to be football. His style pales in comparison to guys like Tatum, Atwater, or Ronnie Lott. Even John Lynch. Are we going to play football like men, or do we want to play flag football in Bermuda shorts and sandals and call it a day? The NFL needs to get off the pot and decide because I'm tired of the pansy-ass way they try to take the physical out of a physical sport. Either crap or get off the pot.

He made the kick, so no harm was done.

You do realize that's a logical fallacy correct? If I get on a wobbly old ladder a few times and it doesn't fall over, does that automatically make the ladder safe?

Well...I didn't fall, so it must be safe, right? WRONG.

Just because having 20/20 hindsight and saying it doesn't matter because it worked is a huge logical fallacy, and I'd think you'd know better.

I wondered about no flag as obvious penalty:
They weren’t calling hip drop tackles in other games too. I believe there was a blatant one during the Chiefs game.

I'm more of a results oriented person.

I'm also a risk taker.

With this said, the play Tunsil got a false start on should've been the play that they kicked the FG on. Like Dale said that's 2 weeks in a row of screwups by Ryans/Slowik at the end of the 1st half. Just another thing that needs to get cleaned up. Fix the ladder or get a new one.

I’m getting tired of Tunsil’s FS’s on crucial 3rd downs. Howard is a waste. As I mentioned in another post, it may not be a bad idea to work Fisher in at RT and move Howard to Swing Tackle. Howard isn’t worth the money, and keeping CJ healthy is the priority over his contract.

I think I heard Scruggs was planning to start, but was eventually held out….which in turn, gave Patterson less time to prepare with the starting group. I wish they had made the decision earlier to give him the max reps in preparation for the game.

Congratulations on your 2-0 start!

Play calling needs to get better on first down. Week 1 looked good because the run game was happening. Last night not so much and got em in way too many 2nd and longs! Not sustainable

Makes you miss ol what’s his name…
Winston I think
Howard played guard damn near all last season didn’t he? He was drafted as a tackle wasn’t he? Whatever…. He needs to get better

I hear ya, but if he puts a bit of daylight between his helmet and the other players chin, that doesn't equate to flag football. I'm just saying if you intend to cut it that close, you leave it up to the official's interpretation of what he sees, and you'll hurt the team when the call/non-call doesn't go your way.
