WINNING BY LOSING. HERE IS THE PROOF OF THAT.
LOOK AT OUR OPTIONS NOW:
(on Reggie Bush declaring for the draft) All we can say is what has happened here with Reggie Bush and Vince Young declaring, with the addition of Matt Leinart among other players, is that you have a real strong top of the draft. I think its much stronger than it was a year ago, so whats the mean? It means were going to get a real good player if we keep the pick; and if we trade the pick, weve got certainly a very valuable commodity to trade.
(on possessing the number one pick) In theory it happens every year with the beginning of the draft, but some years there are better players than other years. I think this year what we have is a much better situation than a year ago, and I think well let it play out over the next couple of months and see what happens.
(on if public sentiment sways decision) Certainly a couple weeks ago it was Reggie Bush and now its Vince Young. And I understand that; Vince Young is a local hero, a great player at Madison High School, a great player at the University of Texas and hes certainly a terrific pro prospect. We understand that. Thats logical.
(on what Reggie Bush could help the Texans) If you have a Reggie Bush, hes an explosive player. Hands on the ball, he can score any time he gets it. He can be a runner, he can be a receiver, he can be a returner and he could be a decoy if you will. Why would you have a decoy? Well, you put him in motion and all of a sudden he can free up coverages. Youre now dictating the defense by moving him around. And that was part of the interview process, certainly asking people, How would you use Reggie Bush? Because at the time we interviewed everybody, we thought Reggie Bush was going to declare. I think he gives you a lot of options, plus he gives you a touchdown maker and another playmaker on offense.
(on Vince Young) Vince Young is certainly a very talented quarterback. He can run and he can throw. If he ends up here, then hes certainly an outstanding pro prospect.
(on if he already knows who the team with draft) No, and I think thats a premature question. We dont even have a head coach. First, you get a coach. The coach comes in and analyzes all your personnel. In all the interviews, the coaches gave us a rundown of our personnel but, admittedly, said they would need to study more tape to feel more comfortable about it. So the coach comes in, analyzes the team, looks at it and hes going to have opinions on it. Certainly, no decisions going to be made here without the head coach having a tremendous say in it.
(on search for head coach) We interviewed seven candidates, and every one was qualified. Every one performed outstanding in the interview process. I think each candidate could be a good head coach in this league. At some point Mr. McNair will make that decision and when he does, well be excited about whoever it is.
(on if Denver offensive coordinator Gary Kubiak is the leading candidate) Well, Mr. McNair will decide who is the leading candidate or who isnt, so I dont think thats fair to categorize anybody as a leading candidate. Certainly, Gary had an outstanding interview with us.
(on if Bush and Young are cant miss guys) Theres never been a cant miss guy, because there are misses. But wed be very surprised if any of these players missed in the National Football League. What will happen with each one of them is that they will probably not work out at the combine, usually these players dont. Maybe they will, maybe they wont, but it doesnt make any difference. The vast majority of your final evaluations are already completed; its how they play the game of football. What you work them out for, sometimes, is to get a time on them, at least find out how fast they are, and then you want to put your hands on them in a workout to see how the react to drills, how they think in situations. Thats why you work players out; its kind of to finish the process. But youre not going to take a player whos a first-round pick, work him out and hell become a third-round pick. Nor can a third-round pick become a first-round pick because of the workout. That doesnt happen.
