Texans relees Brian Hoyer

On a side note the author of that article should do some research before throwing out Hoyers last season stats....shesh
Yeah - 2014 Browns stats.

He also got the cap savings wrong, as the $4.8 referenced was total cap hit for 2016, and included amortization of the signing bonus ($860K), as well as scheduled base salary (non guaranteed as the write-up indicated). The savings will be exactly $4.0 Million, as the amortization amount doesn't go away.

my sources say McNair heard that birds were getting better posts on this MB than Hoyer and did the deed.

Hoyer will be a forgotten footnote in the history of the Texans. 10 years from now, we will say, "Hoyer played for us?"

What, no trade for a 6th round pick? Well looks like he sucked as much as we all thought he did. I mean Rick got a draft pick for Schaub after 231 pick 6's in a season, wow.

Best day the franchise has had in a while.

I can't believe that in a QB driven league, Smith couldn't get something for Hoyer. Other than the terrible playoff game Hoyer wasn't that bad and should have some kind of value, late round pick. This was probably a kind gesture on the Texans part since they could have held him until another team had a QB need in preseason and then traded him for something. Glad he's gone but we should have gotten something for him.

Wish they would've let him go earlier and given the team a much needed upgrade at TE with the cap savings.

Why are you thinking TE needs an upgrade?
The bigger question was why is he thinking lack of cap space was what kept the Texans from doing something they otherwise would have done? For one thing, the amount available immediately prior to cutting Hoyer(per Spot Trac) was about $7.5 Million, and secondly, if there's something they want to do, there's always a way to make the cap space (including cutting Hoyer).

Now granted, that $7.5 includes the amount for the rookie cap (probably about $5.2 or $5.3 Million), but it was always available to the Texans, and they always knew Hoyer could be used to generate even more space. Probably a few other options if they needed them too.

That doesn't mean they've got the TE position nailed down solid - it just means if they don't, it has zero to do with Hoyer being on the roster all this time.

Because there's not one TE on the roster that can 1. Stretch the seams down the hashes. 2. Is an above avg blocker.

That doesn't even take into account the follies of watching Fiedo fight himself trying to catch a short pass and flip it up in the air for an int for a TD. can you imagine seing him trying to catch the ball down the seam. LOL

Also when Fiedo isn't getting called for a false start or worse a holding call, he's missing blocks. Fiedo is another in a long line of Rick Smith 3rd rd picks.

I hope they stay away from drafting Big Ten skill position players this year. I've seen enough of the Big 10 Hoyer/Posey/Martin/Fiedo's etc... of the world to last a lifetime.

Maybe we're clearing cap space for Mohammed Wilkerson.
Mid January Wilkerson supposedly underwent surgery for a fractured right fibula. Reports have predicted a 6 month rehab. Uncomplicated fibular fractures typically carry a 2 to max 3 month return to play. Wilkerson therefore must have suffered a proximal fibular fracture with knee ligament and/or cartilage involvement, or a distal fibular fracture with ankle ligament and/or cartilage involvement in order to carry such a long expected recovery. Post recovery performance following isolated fibular fracture would not be expected to be diminished. However, involvement of joint structures would make performance less predictable, depending on the exact nature of the damage.

Or unfortunately they dont value the TE position. Even though most of the quality teams have TE's that are much better than what are on the Texans roster. Of course I would've given up a 4th gladly to bring Marty B home, of course he wasn't Texans worthy and now the Texans will have to watch Brady/Gronk/Marty B do what TE's do against the Texans next yr.

To me the TE position

Sometimes your Fandom blows me away....

/\ now I heard ObsiWan's post via Metallica's "Creeping Death" :coolb:

This happened way too fast, didn't even give Houston a chance to be proud of their recent QB's......

So in other words, absolutely nothing to do with keeping Hoyer around this long!

The point is I would've cut Hoyer EARLIER ( Like made him cleanout his locker after the K.C. game) to free up $$$$ for Marty B. Smith chose to not do this and now the Texans will

If they had wanted Marty B., Hoyer being here was no obstacle

Well they would have had to create some cap room. Draft picks/UDFA etc... if they had traded for Bennett. What a better way to create that space than cutting Hoyerible. Could they have created space other ways sure.

If a team wants to keep a player/sign a player in FA they can ALWAYS do it. So next time a team says we dont have cap room what they're really saying is we like our team and aren't going to make any moves.

No, the point is they chose not to cut Hoyer until now, and it cost them nothing in terms of Martellus Bennett, but you choose to link the two. That shows how far off the deep end you've gone with this whole thing.

There's lots of folks here - including me - who aren't big Rick Smith fans, and feel like moving on from him would be a step in the right direction. That doesn't mean that if I find out Rick Smith had a turkey sandwich for lunch, I blame him for it because it surely either has or will cause him to do something I don't like. Because in reality, Brian Hoyer being on the roster had exactly the same amount to do with the Texans not trading for Martellus Bennett (or in some other way addressing their TE situation) as what Rick Smith had for lunch today did.

We will never agree on this.

It looks like Smith will be sitting on salary cap space this yr. One thing I think we can agree on is that hopefully that $$$$ will be used on Nuk's extension.
