Texans random thought of the day

How the Chiefs finally found their franchise quarterback in Patrick Mahomes

https://sports.yahoo.com/chiefs-finally-found-franchise-quarterback-patrick-mahomes-165452074.html

Interesting. They stated the Texans were interested in Mahomes. But offer nothing to corroborate. I mean we know the Texans were interested in trading up for a QB... but what makes anyone think it was for Mahomes?

Then they mention the Chiefs were careful not to let on they were interested in Mahomes, then follow up with a statement of someone saying they knew the Chiefs were interested in Mahomes.

I don't know Mahomes. I only know Watson 8 games more. I have no clue which is better or which will have more (or any) long term success in this league.

What I do know, is that article appears to be written by someone promoting an agenda. & only an idiot would assess any value to it.

Personally I imagine Chief fans to be where we were last year before Watson's injury. I can only imagine where they will be 7 weeks from now.

Also, neither Watson nor Mahomes fit my idea of a prototypical franchise QB. They have the prolific college careers I like, but physically I don't believe either of them are currently built for the NFL. Watson at least may bulk up to at least Aaron Rodgers build, maybe. & Mahomes may be the next Brees... Andy Reid should help with that.

But yeah, if Watson weren't a Texan I'd be saying the league has figured him out & unless he figures out the league, we'd be better off looking for the next guy.

Bortles took 4 years to figure it out.
Watson looks like he has the goods, now the onus is on the coaches.
In the meantime, there will likely be some bumps along the road as with 95% of all nfl inductees.

I was a much bigger Mahommes fan than Watson fan during that draft. Watson absolutely blew me away in 6 games last year. He looks the opposite this year since OB "tailored" the offense to him. Mahommes flashed in game 16 last year and has dominated under Reid's tuteledge.

Well Andy Reid actually has trained (or at least helped train), Brett Favre, Donovan McNabb, and Alex Smith (wasn't he a 'bust' until Reid?). Reid even made Kevin Kolb passable enough to get a big contract. If Reid's QB-teaching history is any indication, I agree the kid should do well. ...especially with the many weapons around him.

Alex Smith (wasn't he a 'bust' until Reid?).

It was Harbaugh that turned the 1-1 'bust' into playoff winner, and created the controversy of replacing Smith with Kaepernick on a team that looked to defense and QB itsself to a Superbowl win. Reid was able to get Smith some fun stats, and showcase his real talent - but wasn't able to provide the necessary tools for Smith to have a Rodgers or Brady type season.

Hopkins needs one touchdown reception to extend his streak to nine consecutive home games with a touchdown reception, which would tie Jerry Rice, Raymond Berry and Tommy McDonald for the second-longest streak in NFL history.

Who has the longest streak? Cris Carter?

My main point is that it is too early to tell how Mahomes has done under Reid. What we're seeing with Watson is more common in this league than not. Let the NFL get some film on Mahomes, then let's see what happens.

Oh boy. 3 games in and our consensus best strategy for the remainder of the season is: Sit Watson before he gets crippled. Fire O'Brien. Suck for OL picks

On a positive note, it looks like well probably be picking in the top 10 this year! I’m sure we still find a way to **** that up tho. Go Texans :/

On a positive note, to add on to your positive note, we haven't traded away that top ten pick

Yet

I'm hoping I can trust our new GM not to do something that stupid, but, it's the Texans. You never know.

Perhaps they can change the logo to Toro having a blue oil derrick coming out his ass to remind us all of the futility of football in Houston. Thank god for basketball and baseball to show that it actually can be done.

In the meantime, with a broken offensive line, the decision to change the offense in the offseason looks like a mistake. Watson, coming off season-ending injury, continues to look pensive and downright lost at times, and there isn't any part of this offense the Texans can bank on right now.

"It looks like (Bill) O'Brien is forcing his offense on Watson instead of opening it up to his legs," said one long-time NFL evaluator. "He needs to back him up and operate from shotgun and not so much under center."

Zach Cunningham needs seven total tackles to pass Dunta Robinson (103) for the fourth-most total tackles through a player’s first 19 career games in franchise history
might be a problem, he looked exposed to me. Tackling guys all over the field after first downs dont impress me. They picked on Zach, eventually Dylan played more. Rewatching as I was at the stadium

Time for everyone to earn their jobs, and ILB seems to be under performing

if you got points for moving the ball between the 20's we'd be 3-0, but you don't and our offense likes to **** its pants when it gets in scoring territory
fify

Texans like to fritter the ball away at the worst possible time.

Since this is the thread for off-topic observations, it may surprise you to learn that some people don't like corned beef! I won't go so far as to say these all like horse manure, but they're certainly crazy.

I don’t think it’s the film aspect. I think OB is in Watson’s head. Give Watson Reid and he would have tremendous success year over year. Mahomes will do good because he is with an offensive guru and potential HOF coach.

This is what happens to a lot of QBs who are drafted high. Fit with the wrong HC and they do poorly and bust out. I think that is our concern with Watson and OB.

However, the playoffs aren’t nice to Reid. Let’s see what happens then.

I was a fan of Reid and was saying last year if he got let go to bring him here.

apparently people on O'Brien's staff are starting to lose faith in him, a long with the players. This was taken from 610's Freddy D's post game write up

1.BoB HAS LOST HIS COACHING STAFF & TRIES TO DO TOO MUCH – SOURCE:

Following the game Sunday, someone close to the Texans staff showed me the following text: "WE ARE ******* PATHETIC AT PLAYCALLING". It appears the media and fans aren’t the only ones exasperated with the playcalling on Sundays by BoB. The person went on to say that the problem with BoB is that he’s trying to do too much, micromanages his staff and no one feels comfortable doing their job. “You’ve got five coaches with five different philosophies at this point.” They brought up the continued use of Lamar Miller on first downs and how “no one in the league is scared of Lamar Miller.” The disharmony with the staff has trickled down to the players and it was clear on Sunday after the game that no one is on the same page as to why this team – which has talent – is 0-3. The person added that the Brian Gaine-BoB dynamic isn’t the BFF-ManCrush that has been portrayed. Not that it matters, because even if he wanted to, Gaine does not have the power needed to make a move – that decision comes strictly come from the Top. Of course, this all sounds plausible, but when you compound it with what was said by the players after the game…

The ************ tried to run a shovel pass for a 2 point conversion yesterday LOL .. A SHOVELPASS!! This guy really thinks his **** dont stink and he's some kind of offensive wizard.

Look at the creativity involved with other WR route assignments particularly in bunch formation. Bobs play = one guy deep, one guy curl, one guy in/out. thats it! Oh wait cant forget about the bubble screen! Yup that same play that became en vogue 5 years ago is still in Buttchins arsenal.

Then go look at what the good pass offenses do with their WR route tree/assignments in particular the bunch formation that is causing the most problems for defenses currently. Its night and day.

You can see the difference in a creative route combination vs the bland one we have in the game we played on sunday. The giants used multiple bunch formations, to set up picks and rubs to get receivers open quick to combat their poor line play, there is none of that with our team

My thought of the day... So glad I didn't spend a **** ton of money on NFL Sunday Ticket to stream this crap. I'm so over it I can turn off the TV on Sunday and do something else. Hell, packing to move at the end of November is better than watching what the Amazing Bill O'Brien is putting out on the field.

Im not surprised one bit since Mike Shula learned the Earhardt Perkins system first hand by Ray Perkins himself while the QB at Alabama in his playing days. Now thats not all into itself a prerequisite to run the system effectively because Perkins also failed while leading the Jets in the early/mid 80s while a coach of the Jets? (my memory is foggy i may be misquoting some stuff here).

Picks, rubs, box outs and even deep crossing routes are non existent in OBriens offense. The niche that made the Patriots so effective was incorporating athletic tight ends into those formations and really make the defense work to cover. Obrien rather would have his tight end play an H back role and just stick his hand in the dirt and block. We drafted 2 athletic tight ends, one of them had a 50 yard pass play yesterday, the other one was shining in preseason .. why are neither more involved?

Just too much inconsistency from an offensive coach who is supposed to help a young QB flourish. O'Brien does not help young QBs. OBriens 'system' doesnt really help any QB.

lol OB was supposed to come out at 11 am but still isn't out doing his presser. Maybe he is being fired or forced to use someone as OC

he finally came out like half an hour late. Answered a lot of soft ball questions, with the term IDK. You should know a plan to fix what is going wrong not just IDK we just have to do better.

Then when asked a serious question about why should texans fans have faith in you as a head coach, gave some crap answer about how they just have to win then walked off

this was the next part of what he put, so im guessing its just the general Idk answers from the team

2.FIVE DIFFERENT TEXANS ON SUNDAY ON WHY THE TEXANS ARE STRUGGLING – ‘I DON’T KNOW’

I’m no John Lopez or John McClain when it comes to longevity in the sports reporting game, but I have been around long enough to know that when you hear the same thing two or three times, there’s usually something to it. But when you hear FIVE different football players, from both sides of the football ranging from rookie to accomplished future Hall of Famer – ALL SAYING THE SAME THING? You know there’s something to it. The following guys all said something to the effect of “I don’t know” when asked why this team was 0-3 or why it has no energy to start games:

JJ Watt – “I don’t know, I wish I knew” – on how to get out of the 0-3 slump.

DeAndre Hopkins - “If I was a psychic teller, I could tell you, I just do my job.”

Lamar Miller – “I don’t know” when asked why the offense starts slow

Jordan Thomas – “I really don’t know, I’m a rookie so I’m just doing what I can to help the offense.”

Angelo Blackson – “We just came out a little slow. The goal all week was to come out fast.”

For what it’s worth, Will Fuller did say that the difference between last year when the offense was clicking in Deshaun’s six starts versus why it’s stalled in the first three games this year – “finishing drives. We gotta find a way to get into the end zone.” While we all agree the Texans Red Zone percentage is putrid at this point, there’s more to this offense’s problems than simply finishing drives, getting them started would be nice. Or are we arguing semantics at that point?
