Texans random thought of the day

somehow the goalposts got relocated.
the point I was addressing was should the TEXANS make a play for Le'Veon Bell as an upgrade to Lamar Miller/Alfred Blue/un-named 6th-7th rd RB. I say 'yes' ....but IF we don't find one EARLY in the next draft (also if Doc is right and D'onta Foreman will never get right again).

Whether Jags w/o Fournette would have gone as far as the Jags with Fournette is a totally different discussion.
You say yes. I kinda doubt it.

And by the way, I was looking for the Jags to spend an early pick to replace Bortles myself. So we don't really disagree on that point.
But Coughlin (if you believe Steelb) decided to improve the ground game in order to take pressure off Bortles.

Yes they should upgrade the RB position. Lamar Miller wasn't a feature back before he got here and he hasn't proven he can be one here. Having said that, with the offensive line play we've had here, I don't know how many people could.

That's exactly what Coughlin did.

With BOB coming from the Pats system, Bell isn't even an option for the Texans. Nevermind that even if he was McNair would never sign him. (Blount/Bell smoking dope.)

My 3 positions of interest before camp kicks off:

1. OL- Will the moves made payoff? Is Davenport ready to take a really big step? Can Henderson bring his rookie year form to this team? Can this group gel to become a cohesive unit? Does O'Brien and Devlin finally incorporate a ZBS to better take advantage of the talent accumulated? Can Devlin finally show he's capable of coaching up the OL talent?

I think this is going to be one of the most pivotal units to the Texans success this season.

2. RB- Foreman may or may not be ready by Game 1....that's really walking a tight line. I still view Miller as a true 3rd down back that's being asked to make it as a feature back that has the skill to run between the tackles....so far, not so good. Many folks have ripped on Blue but I was really hoping that they would re-sign him....they did, and that was a good thing. If the OL can get the job done for the running game, I wouldn't be surprised to see Blue make a big jump if Foreman isn't ready to go. Blue was looking a lot better at the tail-end of last season and hopefully with a better interior line he can find some daylight and do some damage.

If this unit can thrive behind an improved OL....Watson's effectiveness goes up another few notches and that can't be good for opposing defenses.

3. TE- This position has not had a very good chance to shine during O'Brien's tenure simply b/c the demand on their playing time to help the OL. The group that has taken the field Feido, Griffin and Anderson were a disappointment when they did get their chances....drops, killer penalties and the inability to be effective blockers/chippers. This season, the Texans open camp with veterans, Griffin, Anderson, Lengel and Pruitt.....of this group, none can block and have had limited to no success in the NFL. This group does nothing to promote the warm and fuzzies.....especially if their primary job has been to help cover for a weak OL.....they can't block and none of them are effective in the Red Zone!!!! The success of this unit will actually fall onto the shoulders of rookies, Jordan Akins who can catch, chip (better than blocker at the moment) and run, Jordan Thomas who at 6-6 @ 265 lbs represents big blocking help to the OL who can actually catch and run pretty well for a guy that big. His size could become very helpful as the season progresses in Red Zone situations...mostly as a blocker this season. The other TE of interest in camp would be 6-7 former pro basketball forward, Jevoni Robinson who is no pushover at 245 lbs. What he presents physical gift wise, the fact he's a 4.5-40 big man who possesses a massive wingspan and 40+" vertical jump. O'Brien and Tim Kelly must get this guy on the field, develop his hands and route running.....why? Because teams don't always get physical specimens like Robinson who are this gifted athletically. This guy could be a legitimate Red Zone threat that no one could really defend if his peak jump range is 14+ feet.

Why nothing about the defense? They drafted smart and used FA signings wisely. Crennel is coming back to the sideline which is a big plus for all involved. All this unit needs is a healthy season and they would easily be a Top 3 NFL Defense once again. It's that simple, stay healthy and enjoy wreaking havoc on NFL offense. Also, there may be more chances than ever in the past of getting to pin their ears back b/c of leads Watson and the offense have afforded them.

New GM in charge. And Bob McNair will let his son take over full duties as the owner pretty soon due to health reasons. Not going to be the same as it was over the past sixteen years. Things are about to change in a really big way. Hopefully for the better.

In fact, I was told that 2018 will be Bob McNair's last year as owner.
Cal McNair is going to take over the team going into the 2019 season.
Well, I don’t wish anything bad upon the old man but having him turn the team over to Cal may turn out to be a great thing! Here’s hoping Cal is the next Robert Kraft and leaves his GM and other hires to do their jobs and back the eff off.

DW4 came in a notch above the tier 3 guys.

2018 NFL QB Tiers: 50 execs rank the starting quarterbacks (Insider)
http://www.espn.com/nfl/insider/sto...gs-best-worst-quarterbacks-voted-league-execs

2018 tier average: 2.60
The voting results easily could be interpreted in a manner that would have pushed Garoppolo and Watson into the third tier. They had lower averages than Cousins and Smith, after all. Either way, the excitement over these potentially dynamic young players is real. With Watson, the torn ACL he suffered last season complicates an already tricky evaluation.

"To me, he is like the guy from Philly [Wentz]," an evaluator said. "Let's just see if he can get through the year healthy. He played like a 1 when he played. These teams are doing a great job doing what guys can do, playing to their strengths. The league has gotten better at that. Whether guys can stay healthy playing that way, that would be my question."

Watson suffered his injury during practice, without contact, so it's tough to blame his playing style.

"I give him an optimistic 3," an offensive coordinator said. "There were a lot of good things, but also a lot of bad things that got glossed over. It was a little bit of his legend. Even the games where they scored a lot of points, he made some horrendous throws that he got away with. Do I think he is talented? Yes. Do I like him? Yes. I just think he is a 3 that could become a 2."

Watson, paired with a Houston defense that ranked 30th for the season in ESPN's efficiency metric, went 3-3 in his six starts. He had 19 touchdowns, eight interceptions, a 103.0 passer rating and 81.3 Total QBR overall.

"He is a player, man," a quarterbacks coach said. "S---, talk about what a team was, night and day with and without him, not just once but twice, before he played and then after he played. And then if you go back to his true freshman year at Clemson, he tore his ACL halfway through that season and that was a totally different team before and after him. Big-time guy."

TIER 1
A Tier 1 quarterback can carry his team each week. The team wins because of him. He expertly handles pure passing situations.

Rodgers 1.00
Brady 1.00
Brees 1.12
Roethlisberger 1.40

TIER 2
A Tier 2 quarterback can carry his team sometimes, but not as consistently. He can handle pure passing situations in doses and/or possesses other dimensions that are special enough to elevate him above Tier 3. He has a hole or two in his game.

Matt Ryan 1.62
Russell Wilson 1.72
Stafford 1.74
Rivers 1.80
Wentz 1.84
Luck 1.94
Newton 2.30
Carr 2.42
Garoppolo 2.58
Watson 2.60

TIER 3
A Tier 3 quarterback is a legitimate starter, but needs a heavier running game and/or defense to win. A lower-volume passing offense makes his job easier.

Cousins 2.52
Alex Smith 2.52
Eli Manning 2.78
Prescott 2.78
Goff 2.80
Winston 2.86
Mariota 2.94
Dalton 2.96
Flacco 3.06
Keenum 3.06
Tyrod Taylor 3.20
Bortles 3.30
Tannenhill 3.36
Sam Bradford 3.38

TIER 4
A Tier 4 quarterback could be an unproven player with some upside, or a veteran who is ultimately best suited as a backup.

Trubisky 3.54
McCown 3.78
Mahomes 3.80
AJ McCarron 4.10

I'd only have Rodgers, Brady, and Brees as legit tier 1 guys. With Ben, Wilson, and Wentz banging on that door after them.
No way I'd have Newton as a tier 2, he's a career 3 by it's very definition.
Goff should cement himself as a legit tier 2 this season.
Watson and Jimmy G at the bottom of the 2s ahead of some established vets is interesting to say the least, but I don't really disagree.

God I simply can't stand PFF
It's just another source like Walter's, John McClain, this message board or flavor of month that anyone happens to use. I use my sources for scraps of info that sometimes leads to other info or offers a nugget of "good stuff". If it were easy, we'd all do it.

Houston Texans announced they’ll open four (4) of their training camp practices to the public:
  • Saturday, August 11th
  • Monday, August 13th
  • Wednesday, August 15th
  • Thursday, August 16th
Each of the open practices will start at 9:15 a.m. CDT. Gates will open to fans at 8:15 a.m., but the parking lots will open at 5 a.m. should you want to tailgate.

The Texans are asking fans to register here between now and 5 p.m. CDT on Friday (July 27th); the team will then notify fans via e-mail whether they actually got tickets.

Each registrant will be limited to two (2) tickets per practice.

I went back in the old days when Kubiak first got here. You could sit almost anywhere in the stands.
Met TC, Vinny, and a couple of other old timers. It was fun.

then we started winning ...and it became "a thing".

Last time I went it was standing room only. People were getting to a 8:00 am practice at daybreak! It was a madhouse.

Goodness knows how crowded it will be with folks trying to get a peek at Watson.

...but I threw my hat in the ring anyway.

Submitted for the 15th. Be pretty rad to watch some football and say hi to another TT dork.

Yep I remember those days.
I think JJ was a rookie the last time I went to a Texans practice which would have been like 2011, right ?
You are right about Watson: potentially the first real superstar QB in town. Wow those practices here in Houston next month will be a hoppin.

Some players will put them on and show their worth.

Some players will look like they got the wrong message.

heard anything from Vinny (with a Y)? I missed the guy. Directed me (and many others to this MB when it was the "official" MB). My addiction is all his fault. lol

Mathieu saying good things about Kevin Johnson and the city of Houston. Seems like a decent person. I honestly don't know much about him.

Young man who straightened his act after entering NFL. I'm proud of him and hope he retires in Houston..way into the future. He seems to have fit in with the vets and is pumped for the season.

No contract extension is imminent for Jadeveon Clowney. The Texans will not negotiate during the regular season, maintaining a long-standing team policy
That makes me give a sigh of relief. Mr. McNair keep your lips closed and let Gaines & Chris Olsen handle this situation. In a few weeks JD will be guaranteed $12.306 million & that can tide him over while he hopefully remains healthy another 16 + games and be named to consecutive pro bowl. We got the money if he has the time on field.

If only he can manage that... for once!

FWIW. Just a point of clarification. I have seen posts that have referred to TC as part of the "offseason." The "offseason" technically only refers to the period that begins the moment following a team's last game and goes until training camp starts the following July.

The downside for the Texans is that they don't have the draft picks that a typical bad team would get to improve its roster, given that Houston sent its first- and second-round picks to the Browns as part of the trades to add Watson andremoveBrock Osweiler. The Texans have the worst set of offensive tackles in the league, which won't help Watson's chances of staying healthy. Virtually every one of their stars besidesDeAndre Hopkinsis an injury concern. They also have as much top-level talent as anybody in the league. If any team has the upside to come out of nowhere and emerge from the bottom of their division as one of the league's best teams overnight in the same way the Eagles did a year ago, it's the Texans.

In a sense kinda agree with this ESPN writer which is that the Texans prospects for the 2018 season are spread over a very wide range with lots of uncertainty.

This cannot be minimized, especially in light of the fact that a great number of first line backups also present this same concern.

It's the kind of year that you wake up with Bulls on Parade optimism and start to think about the question marks surrounding the team and go to bed with Powda post draft pessimism. I don't recall a year of not having a better sense of how things will go for my team going into the season.

Honestly if Watson stays healthy for a full season and we finish at least 8-8 I'll be happy. Everything else that breaks our way after that will be gravy.

all players are one year away from injuries/play. We don't know if FA pickups will be better on Texans with Watson than prior team but I would guess yes. Zach Fulton with Chiefs 846 snaps — 634 at center, 150 at left guard, 62 at right guard
12 pressures allowed — one hit, 11 hurries https://chiefswire.usatoday.com/

how do you evaluate him as a left guard based on 165 snaps? Giving up one hit & no sacks in 846 snaps is decent IMO. I would feel much better if Foreman was healthy but I'm not counting on him at all. I do know Fulton will make LG better and should impact play of whomever is to his left.
